Our guests Alex Colston and Haitham Arafat spent days in Israeli custody after being abducted from a humanitarian mission sailing to Gaza. They share accounts of violence, abuse and torture at the hands of Israeli soldiers. "The process that they have there in the jail was designed to break you as a human," says Arafat, a Palestinian American activist born in Gaza who has taken part in multiple missions attempting to break Israel's long-standing siege. Over 100 members of his family have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023. While incarcerated, the activists were visited by Israel's minister of national security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, who was recently banned from France after publicly ridiculing flotilla members. "They call us provocateurs, or they say we're terrorists … and yet, whenever Ben-Gvir shows up to these things, he's the one provoking us," says Colston, a journalist who was previously detained by Israel while sailing with the Global Sumud Flotilla last year. The qualifiers for the 10th Tiramisu World Cup will take place in Moasca in July, with Treviso hosting the final in October. Competitors face off in two categories – Original and Creative recipes. The rules are pretty strict, e.g. a set list of ingredients and bans on everything from alcohol (i.e. in the tiramisu, at least!) to certain kitchen tools. The contest is open to anyone over the age of 18 who is not a gastronomy professional. Entry costs €30. Registration is currently not open – but will be again in a couple of weeks’ time. Good news for people who like to savour rather than labour; the event is also looking for judges, although applications are not possible just yet. As Ford’s production line became more efficient, a new problem emerged: workers were quitting. The repetitive, relentless nature of the assembly caused many to leave. And the cost of training their replacement ate straight into those carefully engineered efficiency gains. So Henry Ford made a controversial move. He raised the daily wage from $2.34 to $5, and then went further. Instead of the standard single day off on Sunday, he introduced a two-day break: Saturday and Sunday. The result wasn’t just happier workers, it was a more stable, more productive factory. And in the process, the modern weekend was born.

Activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla were beaten by police officers at Bilbao airport in Spain on Saturday after they returned home from being intercepted at sea, abducted and abused by Israeli forces while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. At least four people were arrested. Members of the police force for Spain's Basque Country, known as the Ertzaintza, used batons to attack activists, family members and supporters who had gathered to pose for pictures. The police violence drew attention to 1.66 million euros worth of security contracts between the Ertzaintza and an Israeli firm run by a former Mossad agent to provide body armor, surveillance technology and tactical training courses. This comes as Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has been barred from entering France. France's foreign ministry cited Ben-Gvir's "incitement of hatred and violence against Palestinians" as well as a video he shared last week showing him taunting dozens of activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla who'd been abducted by Israeli forces and pushed to the ground, face-first, with their hands bound behind their backs.

Why Swear Words Have So Much Power: The Neuroscience of Taboo Language Why do certain words feel so powerful? Why does a taboo word come out almost automatically when we stub a toe, feel shock, or experience pain? In this episode, we explore the hidden science of swearing without focusing on shock value. A great mustard cream sauce comes down to three things: a good fond, proper reduction, and the right mustard. Tonight I'm cooking Filet de porc à la moutarde and finishing the sauce tableside with Maille Australia Dijon. Let’s see what my biggest critic thinks of this one. Recipe below. Discover Maille at your local store and try it today! #MailleAustralia #AD Ingredients 1 pork loin 3 shallots 1 heap tbsp Maille dijon mustard 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp unsalted butter 100ml chicken stock ½ cup white wine 1 tbsp creme fresh ½ bunch tarragon asparagus to serve mashed potato to serve Method Trim the tenderloin fillet from silver skim and slice into two even portions. Season evenly with sea salt. Heat a heavy based stainless steel or cast iron pan on high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil and sear the pork fillets on all sides. Turn the heat down and continue cooking for 10 minutes or until the centre of the filets reach 55°C, then baste with butter until the fillet reaches 62°C. Remove the pork from the pan and rest on a wire rack once cooked. While the pork cooks, begin on the asparagus. Place a medium pan over medium heat. Add a splash of olive oil, then the asparagus. Cover the pan with a lid and gently cook for 5-6 minutes, check and flip every 2 minutes. Once the asparagus is nearly ready, add a splash of water to help them steam through. The asparagus is ready when it’s tender but still has a slight bite in the centre. Tip out most of the butter left in the pan from searing the pork. Do not wash the pan. Peel and finely dice the shallots. Place the pan over medium heat and sweat the shallots for 2 minutes or until transparent. Deglaze the pan with wine, until the alcohol has evaporated. Add the chicken stock and reduce by half. Finish the sauce with a generous spoonful of Maille dijon mustard and creme fraiche. Stir through with finely sliced tarragon for a herbaceous finish. Taste and adjust seasoning as required. To serve, warm the mash up in a pot for 3-4 minutes until warmed through. Transfer the pork back to the pan with the mustard sauce and spoon over the fillets to glaze in the sauce. Serve with warm asparagus, a spoonful of hot mashed potato and plenty of Maille dijon mustard sauce.

In 1967, JC-130A 54-1626 was selected for conversion into the prototype AC-130A gunship (Project Gunship II). The modifications were done at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base by the Aeronautical Systems Division. A direct-view night-vision telescope was installed in the forward door, an early forward-looking infrared device was placed in the forward part of the left wheel well, with miniguns and rotary cannons fixed facing down and aft along the left side. The analog fire-control computer prototype was handcrafted by Wing Commander Tom Pinkerton at the USAF Avionics Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB. Flight testing of the prototype was performed primarily at Eglin Air Force Base, followed by further testing and modifications. By September 1967, the aircraft was certified ready for combat testing and was flown to Nha Trang Air Base, South Vietnam, for a 90-day test program. The AC-130 was later supplemented by the AC-119 Shadow (Project Gunship III), which later proved to be underpowered.

Vanaf vandaag is het dan echt zover: fatbikers worden niet meer gewaarschuwd, maar beboet in het Vondelpark. De eerste twee weken van het fatbikeverbod werden de fatbikers nog gewaarschuwd, maar sinds vandaag worden er toch echt boetes uitgedeeld. Hoewel er vanaf vandaag daadwerkelijk bekeurd kan worden, zag AT5 vanmiddag geen boetes worden uitgedeeld. Wel viel op dat er aanzienlijk minder fatbikes in het park reden. In ongeveer anderhalf uur tijd kwam AT5 nog zo’n twaalf fatbikers tegen. Veel van hen wilden niet reageren voor de camera. Sommigen kiezen er inmiddels voor om lopend door het park te gaan om een boete te voorkomen. Een fatbike-eigenaar zegt: "Helaas, ik moet lopen, anders riskeer ik een boete." De afgelopen twee weken gold nog een overgangsperiode waarin overtreders alleen werden gewaarschuwd. Deze periode zou bedoeld zijn om bezoekers te informeren over de nieuwe situatie. Die overgangsperiode is nu voorbij. Vaste bezoekers van het park merken duidelijk verschil sinds de invoering van het fatbikeverbod. "Ik vind het op zich wel relaxed. Je wordt wat minder snel omver gereden", vertelt een wandelaar. Een andere bezoeker zegt nauwelijks nog fatbikes in het park te zien: "Het Vondelpark is nu eigenlijk gewoon weer rustig."Toch vragen sommige bezoekers zich af hoe streng er gehandhaafd wordt. Zo vertelt een parkganger dat hij nog fatbikes zag rijden, terwijl er ook een politieauto aanwezig was, zonder dat er werd ingegrepen.Voor sommige fatbikebezitters heeft het verbod gevolgen. Een gebruiker vertelt zelfs te overwegen zijn fatbike te verkopen: "Ik woon naast het Vondelpark en mijn sportschool zit aan de andere kant. Het is heel onhandig dat ik er niet meer fietsend doorheen kan. Dus ik denk dat ik hem ga verkopen." De gemeente voerde het verbod in om de veiligheid en rust in het park te verbeteren. Vooral wandelaars en andere bezoekers klaagden de afgelopen tijd over hardrijdende fatbikes.
