Vanaf vandaag is het dan echt zover: fatbikers worden niet meer gewaarschuwd, maar beboet in het Vondelpark. De eerste twee weken van het fatbikeverbod werden de fatbikers nog gewaarschuwd, maar sinds vandaag worden er toch echt boetes uitgedeeld. Hoewel er vanaf vandaag daadwerkelijk bekeurd kan worden, zag AT5 vanmiddag geen boetes worden uitgedeeld. Wel viel op dat er aanzienlijk minder fatbikes in het park reden. In ongeveer anderhalf uur tijd kwam AT5 nog zo’n twaalf fatbikers tegen. Veel van hen wilden niet reageren voor de camera. Sommigen kiezen er inmiddels voor om lopend door het park te gaan om een boete te voorkomen. Een fatbike-eigenaar zegt: "Helaas, ik moet lopen, anders riskeer ik een boete." De afgelopen twee weken gold nog een overgangsperiode waarin overtreders alleen werden gewaarschuwd. Deze periode zou bedoeld zijn om bezoekers te informeren over de nieuwe situatie. Bill explains how bicycle helmets are engineered to protect riders from brain injuries. He traces the history of helmet design from pith helmets and leather motorcycle helmets through the introduction of EPS foam, and explains why the cheap, single-use nature of that foam is the key to helmets working as a public safety intervention. He explains how EPS foam is manufactured from polystyrene beads impregnated with pentane, expanded by steam, and fused in a mold. He then explains two methods for reducing the rotational forces that cause concussions: MIPS, which uses a slippery inner layer that allows the helmet to slide on impact, and WaveCel, a lattice of distorted triangular cells that collapses to absorb oblique impacts. Lastly, he explains why WaveCel's unusual tiling is auxetic — expanding in both directions when stressed — which allows it to conform to the curved surface of a head. Video Sections 00:02 Bicycle helmets: a brief history The first bicycle helmets were pith helmets and leather motorcycle helmets — useful for scrapes but poor protection from impact. Designs for foam-lined helmets to prevent concussions appear by the early 1950s. 00:53 The three components of a modern helmet A modern helmet has a thin polycarbonate outer shell, a layer of EPS foam, and an inner layer to reduce injury from rotational forces. Bill removes a section from two helmets to show these components. 01:38 How foam protects the brain Foam protects by spreading an impact's impulse over a longer time, dramatically reducing the peak force. Studies show helmets produce a nearly fifty percent reduction in head injuries. 02:50 EPS: the material inside your helmet The foam is expanded polystyrene — the same material as packing peanuts, but denser. A packing peanut is two percent EPS; a helmet's foam is about ten percent. 3:13 Manufacturing EPS foam EPS begins as polystyrene spheres impregnated with liquid pentane. Steam causes the pentane to vaporize and expand the beads, which are then aged in silos before being poured into a mold and fused into a foam liner. 04:25 The problem of rotational injury A helmet's foam protects against direct impacts, but oblique strikes cause the skull to rotate. The brain lags behind by inertia, and that differential motion shears brain tissue — causing concussions. 04:55 MIPS: a sliding inner layer MIPS — Multi-directional Impact Protection System — uses a slippery inner layer held by rubber straps. On oblique impact, the outer helmet slides ten to fifteen millimeters, reducing the rotational force transmitted to the skull. 05:19 WaveCel: a collapsible lattice WaveCel replaces some of the foam with a lattice of distorted triangular cells. The lattice is collapsible in multiple directions, absorbing the energy of an oblique strike before it can rotate the rider's head. 05:37 Auxetic materials: growing in both directions WaveCel's distorted triangular tiling is auxetic — when stretched in one direction, it expands in the other. This allows the flat lattice to conform to the curved surface of a head, unlike a regular hexagonal mesh. 06:56 The future of helmet design Engineers are exploring gradient-density foams, gels, liquids, and even magnetically activated fluids to further reduce rotational injury. Agenten, onder wie een onderhandelaar, konden uiteindelijk vanuit de kerk hem overtuigen naar beneden te komen. It shows the Gentry Brothers Circus coming to town, and must pre-date 1929 as Gentry Bros. folded in that year as part of Great Depression financial woes. At the time the film was shot, the circus was a major form of American entertainment that included major players such as the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. Gentry Brothers began as a small dog and pony show in 1885 by 17 year old Henry B. Gentry. Henry and his two brothers expanded into tent shows in 1891. By 1910, they were the largest traveling American circus. The film presents a slice of early circus history, starting with shots of the roustabouts as they set up for the show, ornate bandwagons, equestrian riders and clowns marching into the main arena for opening day. It shows the set up process as workers tend to animals and string up banners advertising various acts. The film also includes other scenes including a parade, what might be the Harvard-Yale crew races, and footage of siblings as they tend to the family pony, play pretend with an early telephone model and teach the dog tricks in the yard. 0:00 The film opens with tents, performers on the grounds (:11), a bandwagon, horses and Ford Model T’s (:13). This indicates a portion of the show featuring archival materials related to the minstrel shows. These were at one point in American history, among the most popular forms of entertainment. Shows involved overtly racist and offensive depictions of African stereotypes. They were generally considered out of favor by the 1950’s and 1960’s. Banners advertise the Hawaiian Opera (6:53), an Illusionist (6:59), Strange People from all Parts of the World (7:02) and the Monkey Village (7:11). Decorative bandwagons (7:17), elephants (7:24) and an animal cage bandwagon follow (7:43). Horses pull another decorative bandwagon (7:56). Scenes capture a sense of excitement as set up bustles towards the start of the show. Made up clowns and performers march the grounds (8:02-8:06). A clown passes a particularly intricate calliope bandwagon (8:24). Equestrian performers (9:18), camels (9:22), zebras (9:24) and elephants (9:28) ride in. Footage switches to a parade possibly July 4th (9:58). Equestrian riders, a marching band (10:00) and motorcade (10:10) fill the thoroughfare of an unidentified town as spectators jam the sidewalks. Uneven footage follows a crew boat race, possibly the Harvard-Yale match which spectators watched from moving railroad train cars (11:01) capturing a tug boat (11:41) and the finish line (12:22). At home scenes show (13:01) the family’s home. A boy in a Gunnery School football sweater cheers at a wooden table (13:04). A younger sibling holds twigs in his mouth (13:29). Youth play pretend for the camera (13:45) with and early candlestick telephone. Shots capture playful antics (14:04). A pair sits with the family dog (14:23). This small plant produced 1.25 MW and was designed to maintain high power quality and capacity, operate within narrow regulation limits for frequency and voltage, handle shifts in power loads of plus or minus 30%, and operate under extreme climatic conditions (-45-degree F winters and 102-degree summers). At a 6,000-foot elevation, the reactor was situated atop Warren Peak in the Bearlodge Mountains six miles from Sundance, Wyoming. Because of the remote location, the reactor had to be modular and prefabricated prior to shipment. The Martin Company near Baltimore, Maryland, used highly skilled operators and factory equipment to manufacture the plant. The reactor design included flanged interconnections to allow quick disconnect for disassembly, packaging, transport and reassembly at the field site. The C130 aircraft airlifted 16 identical shipping containers to Rapid City, South Dakota. Large trucks then transported the parts 93 miles to the station. Reactor operations personnel reassembled the prefabricated components into a complete operating reactor, rather than requiring construction crews. The reactor operated using a unified control console rated with reliability at 99.45%. The plant needed only one person to monitor the plant and control auxiliary equipment. Another worker performed a roving tour of the equipment, continually inspecting the working parts. More advanced versions of PM-1 were considered, such as liquid-metal cooled reactors and gas cooled reactors that could operate at higher temperatures. Portable reactors also included the SM-1 in Virginia (1957), PM-2A in Greenland (start up in 1960), PM-3A in Antarctica (1962 )SM-1A in Alaska (1962), and the STURGIS floating power plant (MH-1A) in the Canal Zone in Panama (1967). The U.S. Air Force and Army Nuclear Power Program recognized that any increase in capital cost for PM-1 was justifiably overridden by its high reliability— especially, where a large amount of high-quality electric power is needed. PM-1 fuel supported operations for two years before the reactor needed refueling. The pre-existing diesel generator was used as a secondary power source. Today’s microreactors require further technical development and rigorous regulatory approvals before deployment. De minderjarige jongen die gisteren ernstig gewond raakte bij een ongeluk op de Pieter Calandlaan in Nieuw-West is 13 jaar. Hij werd gisteravond aangereden door een motorscooter en ligt nog altijd in het ziekenhuis. De politie is op zoek naar mensen die het ongeluk hebben zien gebeuren. De melding van het ongeval kwam zaterdagavond rond 20.00 uur binnen. Hierop kwamen de hulpdiensten met veel materieel ter plaatse en werd er een traumahelikopter opgeroepen. De jongen is gereanimeerd en met spoed per ambulance naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. De 18-jarige bestuurder van de motor raakte lichtgewond en is ter plekke nagekeken door ambulancepersoneel. Op sociale media circuleerden verhalen dat de jongen zou zijn overleden. De politie benadrukt dat dit niet het geval is. De politie vraagt iedereen die meer weet over het ongeluk om zich te melden. Een automobilist heeft vanavond een spoor van vernieling achtergelaten op de Klaprozenweg in Noord. Hij schampte een rij geparkeerde fietsen, reed door en crashte even verderop tegen een paal. Vervolgens sloegen de bestuurder en twee andere inzittenden op de vlucht. Een 26-jarige man uit Almere kon kort daarna worden aangehouden; of hij de bestuurder is, wordt nog onderzocht. Het incident gebeurde rond 20.15 uur. Op beelden die zijn gemaakt door omstanders is te zien dat de weg bezaaid ligt met brokstukken. Fietsnietjes zijn door de klap uit de grond gereden en van sommige fietsen is er niet veel meer over. Ook de auto is total loss. Twee inzittenden zijn nog voortvluchtig; de politie is naar hen op zoek. De toedracht van het incident wordt onderzocht. Door het warme weer was het druk buiten en hebben onder meer veel terrasgangers de crash zien gebeuren. De politie heeft hen gehoord als getuigen. Crash in West Afgelopen zondag veroorzaakte een automobilist in West ook een ravage. Op de Frederik Hendrikstaat raakte hij geparkeerde auto's, die daardoor beschadigd raakten, en reed hij vervolgens total loss door.
