A federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration violated the constitutional rights of international students in seeking to deport them for their pro-Palestinian activism and criticism of Israel. The ruling is the result of a lawsuit filed by The Stanford Daily, the student newspaper at Stanford University, which claimed that some of its writers on student visas declined to report on topics related to Israel and Palestine, or requested their published articles be removed from the paper’s website, for fear of deportation.

It has a script by Charles Brackett, President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It was narrated by Kemp Niver. The film begins with a nod to the Academy Awards, with some fuzzy looking footage of either a Hollywood movie premiere or an Academy Award event. The script explains that the Academy has engaged in "Operation Library of Congress" to retrieve paper prints of early movies from the vaults. At 1:14, Thomas Edison is acknowledged as receiving the copyright on the first American motion picture in 1894 for "The Sneeze" (note: some sources indicate "The Blacksmith Shop" in 1893 was actually the first). Text explains how the Primrose Productions worked with AMPAS and the Library of Congress to bring back some of these early motion pictures from their paper strips. At 2:41, a paper print is opened for the first time. At 3:00, the narrator mentions that scenes to follow show the Harvard Football team, and Boston in 1904 and 1906. At 3:29, the Harvard vs Pennsylvania football game of 1903 (played at Penn) is shown; Harvard won 17-10. At 3:42, some of the earliest record if not the earliest, of a football game. Next, Riverside Park in 1904 with "Canoeing on the Charles" at 4:18. Two of the canoes are equipped with phonographs! At 4:54, a trolley ride through the streets of Boston. Paper prints of films were an early mechanism to establish the copyright of motion pictures by depositing them with the Library of Congress. Thomas Alva Edison’s company was first to register each frame of motion-picture film onto a positive paper print, in 1893. The Library of Congress processed and cataloged each of the films as one photograph, accepting thousands of paper prints of films over a twenty-year period. An unintended but fortunate side-effect is that while the actual films and negatives of this period often decayed or were destroyed, the paper prints sat ignored until the 1940s and were conserved. When this copyright deposit method ended in 1912, actual film prints were registered. Many films made before 1912 were lost forever because their original elements (for example, nitrate film) were too unstable for any lasting preservation or conservation. Paper prints, though, came with their own unpredictable nature, bringing migration challenges that rival the difficulties involved with the analog/digital conversions of today. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. Update | Een unieke zaak met mogelijke grote gevolgen voor gemeenten en voetbalverenigingen. De gemeente Hengelo stond afgelopen dinsdag voor de rechter omdat rubberkorrels van twee van hun kunstgrasvelden jarenlang de omgeving in de directe omgeving van de velden vervuilden en in het milieu terechtkwamen. Het Openbaar Ministerie vindt dat de gemeente tussen 2018 en 2020 onvoldoende heeft gedaan om dat te voorkomen en eist een boete van 5.000 euro. Dat rubbergranulaat milieuproblemen kan veroorzaken, bracht Zembla in 2017 al aan het licht. We onderzochten toen wat er gebeurt met de miljoenen rubberkorrels die op Nederlandse kunstgrasvelden liggen. Stoffen als zink en minerale oliën kunnen uit de korrels vrijkomen en in de bodem en het water terechtkomen. Bovendien verspreiden de korrels zich buiten de velden. Windows on the World served guests for 25 years, until the morning of September 11, 2001, when attacks on the World Trade Center destroyed the North Tower in which the restaurant was located. Seventy-nine workers and 91 diners were killed. We're joined by Top of the World's co-directors, Julie Cohen and Betsy West, and by Sekou Siby, a former line cook at Windows on the World. Siby, who immigrated to the United States from the Ivory Coast in 1996, was originally scheduled to work on the morning of September 11, but a co-worker asked him to switch shifts. "He didn't make it," says Siby, who became an organizer and longtime leader at the Restaurant Opportunities Center (ROC), an advocacy group founded by Windows on the World workers to support each other in the aftermath of the attack. "The extraordinary immigrant workforce of Windows [of the World] and what they collectively created is just a reminder of the contributions of immigrant New Yorkers to the restaurant world and to the culture of the city," says Cohen. "We want people to remember not just the tragedy, but the real beauty and the specific stories of what was lost on that day." Top of the World premieres on CNN Monday, September 7, 2026. Danbury, like many other communities across the United States, has been the target of a spike in immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, including local reports of ICE arresting parents at school bus stops. "We really have been describing it as the administration terrorizing our city, because that is what it felt like. The streets were empty. Kids stayed home from practice. Kids stayed home from school," says Juliana Soares, the lead organizer for Danbury Unites for Immigrants. "Masked agents often would shut down the street to just abduct people. … They just do a gross display of force and intimidation in a grocery store parking lot, where they're just walking around, kind of hunting their next target." Support our work: https://democracynow.org/donate/sm-desc-yt Tyson Foods, the largest U.S. meatpacking and processing company, shuttered a beef processing facility in Joslin, Illinois, last month, laying off more than 2,500 primarily immigrant workers "virtually overnight." The company cites the historic cattle shortage as a primary reason for the closure. The U.S. cattle herd is at a 75-year low on account of climate change-induced drought in the American West, rising prices for diesel and fertilizer amid the U.S. war on Iran, and years of corporate consolidation that has driven down profits for cattle ranchers. We speak to Caitlyn Clark, director of the group Essential Workers for Democracy, which is working to institute democratic reforms within the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), a labor union that represents more than a million workers across the United States. These workers include the former Tyson plant meatpackers, who worked in "some of the most dangerous jobs in America" while making "billions of dollars in profit for Tyson." Tyson Foods CEO and President Donnie King made over $34 million last year, nearly 800 times more than the median Tyson worker. Since they were suddenly laid off, former Joslin plant workers have been protesting outside the shuttered plant, calling on Tyson "to extend their severance pay, and calling on Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to intervene to help keep the plant open," Clark tells us. "We need to take on the bosses and be serious about the level of inequality and exploitation that working people are facing today," she adds. The ruling is the result of a lawsuit filed by The Stanford Daily, the student newspaper at Stanford University, which claimed that some of its writers on student visas declined to report on topics related to Israel and Palestine, or requested their published articles be removed from the paper's website, for fear of deportation. "What we were hearing from the noncitizens in our newsroom and from noncitizens across campus — current students, former students, alumni — was that they were genuinely frightened because of what they saw in the headlines, what they saw happen to Rümeysa Öztürk," says George Porteous, editor-in-chief of The Stanford Daily. Rümeysa Öztürk is the former Tufts University graduate student arrested and detained by ICE after co-authoring an op-ed encouraging Tufts to divest from Israel in her university's student newspaper. "The chill is the point," adds Will Creeley, legal director at the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, or FIRE, the organization that represented The Stanford Daily in court. De 21-jarige Nina van den Broek kwam in juni door een noodlottig ongeval met een tractor om het leven in de Ronde Hoep. Een stoet van zo'n tweehonderd mensen, waaronder familie en vrienden, liepen donderdag een wandeltocht door Ouderkerk aan de Amstel om duidelijk te maken dat de verkeersveiligheid in het gebied moet worden verbeterd. De strekking is duidelijk: er moet zo snel mogelijk iets gebeuren. De oom van Nina, Gijs Hoen, sprak gisteravond in tijdens de raadsvergadering van de gemeente Ouder-Amstel met die boodschap. "Al jaren gebeuren er ernstige ongevallen op de Ronde Hoep. Inmiddels zijn er twee fietsers om het leven gekomen, onder wie mijn nicht Nina." Vlak voor het inspreken richt de moeder van Nina, Wendela, zich tot de aanwezigen. "We zijn sinds 20 juni lid van een club waar niemand bij wil horen. De club van ouders die hun kind verloren. Al jaren is de gemeente Ouder-Amstel lid van een club waar je als gemeente ook niet bij wil horen. De club van gemeentes met de meeste verkeersongelukken." Uitgeweken voor tractor Met veel verdriet kijkt de familie terug op 20 juni, de dag waarop Nina om het leven kwam, toen ze met haar vader een rondje fietste. Haar oom Gijs Hoen: "Er kwam een tractor van de andere kant aanrijden en zij weken daarvoor uit. Door een noodlottig ongeval is ze daarbij ten val gekomen en de aanhanger van de tractor heeft haar aangereden." Petitie Dat de zorgen over de route groot zijn, blijkt uit de duizenden ondertekenaars van de petitie die na Nina haar overlijden werd gestart. Ook zijn er gisteravond tientallen mensen op de been, waaronder haar teamgenoten van roeivereniging Nereus. Zij hopen dat de gemeente dit signaal serieus gaat nemen en in actie komt. "Je mag hier gewoon te hard rijden en het is te smal", vertelt een vriendin van haar roeiteam. "Landbouwvoertuigen zijn nu zo groot geworden, het is veel te smal om het veilig op die snelheid te doen." Ook inwoners uit Ouderkerk aan de Amstel lopen mee in de stoet. "Ik ken de Ronde Hoep heel goed en ik weet van de onveilige situaties en de hoeveelheid verkeer die daar rijdt. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat je met een aantal aanpassingen het veiliger kunt maken voor al het verkeer." Onafhankelijk onderzoek De gemeente heeft aan de familie toegezegd een onafhankelijk onderzoek naar de verkeersveiligheid te doen. Voor Hoen is dat een goed signaal, maar hij hoopt dat er, voordat dat het onderzoek is afgerond, al wat gaat gebeuren in de Ronde Hoep. "Ze hebben bijvoorbeeld ook uitgelegd dat het ingewikkeld is om het riet te snoeien, omdat het niet hun grond is. Dan denk ik: ga er alsjeblieft achteraan en probeer dit op korte termijn voor elkaar te krijgen", legt hij uit.
