Op het Museumplein wordt hard gewerkt aan een groot en kleurrijk kunstwerk op het basketbalveld. De schildering van kunstenaar Munir de Vries is gekozen, nadat de buurt erover heeft gestemd, en zit vol met symboliek. "Ik hoop dat mensen er door geïnspireerd raken." Het kunstwerk oogt op het eerste gezicht vooral kleurrijk, maar als je even langer kijkt, zie je dat er verschillende boodschappen in de schildering zijn verwerkt. Zo loopt de tekst 'They tried to bury us, but they didn't know we were seeds' dwars door het werk. Volgens De Vries staat die zin symbool voor veerkracht: "Elk zaadje kan doorbreken. De boodschap is: laat je niet klein krijgen." Koloniale geschiedenis Het kunstwerk verwijst ook naar de koloniale geschiedenis van het Museumplein. In 1883 vond hier de Internationale Koloniale Tentoonstelling plaats, waar mensen uit Nederlandse koloniën werden tentoongesteld. Tegenwoordig besteden de musea rondom het Museumplein aandacht aan dat verleden. De Vries verwerkt die geschiedenis in zijn ontwerp door figuren te tonen die vastzitten binnen kaders, terwijl anderen daar juist uit breken. Het Museumplein staat al jarenlang bekend als een plek in Amsterdam waar grote demonstraties plaatsvinden. "Het Museumplein is natuurlijk een plek van protest en verschillende meningen", vertelt de kunstenaar. Juist daarom vond De Vries het passend om voor dit werk tekst te gebruiken, iets waar hij normaal gesproken weinig mee werkt. Het werk bedekt in totaal de gehele oppervlakte van het basketbalveld, wat zo'n 700 vierkante meter is. Om dat allemaal voor elkaar te krijgen schakelt Munir verschillende hulptroepen in. De Vries krijgt hulp van vrienden, familie, vrijwilligers en zelfs basketballers die normaal gesproken op het veld spelen.Ondanks de nieuwe make-over van het basketveld blijft het veld geschikt om op te basketballen. "De basketballers vonden het heel belangrijk dat ze konden blijven spelen. We hebben research gedaan over wat de beste verf is", vertelt De Vries. Ook basketballers die van plan waren een potje te spelen reageren enthousiast: "Het ziet er best mooi uit. We hebben zin om erop te gaan spelen". Als alles volgens planning verloopt, kan er dit weekend weer worden gespeeld op het vernieuwde basketbalveld. Twenty-mule teams were teams of eighteen mules and two horses attached to large wagons that transported borax out of Death Valley from 1883 to 1898. They traveled from mines across the Mojave Desert to the nearest railroad spur, 165 miles (266 km) away in Mojave. The routes were from the Harmony and Amargosa Borax Works to Daggett, California, and later Mojave, California. After Harmony and Amargosa shut down in 1888, the mule team's route was moved to the mines at Borate, 3 miles (5 km) east of Calico, back to Daggett. There they worked from 1891 until 1898 when they were replaced by the Borate and Daggett Railroad. The wagons were among the largest ever pulled by draft animals, designed to carry 10 short tons (9 metric tons) of borax ore at a time. Dit weekend is er twee keer ingebroken bij de brandweerkazerne Zebra aan de IJdoornlaan in Noord. Er is twee keer een steen door de ruiten van de garagedeuren gegooid en de inbrekers hebben 'essentiële levensreddende goederen gestolen'. Volgens de politie kan er van geluk worden gesproken dat er geen oproep kwam waarbij deze goederen nodig waren. Een straatbeeld bij schemering toont een bakstenen gebouw met drie grote rode deuren, verlicht door buitenlampen. Langs een betegeld trottoir staan struiken en groeit hoog gras, en vlakbij staat een straatlantaarn. De lucht is gedeeltelijk bewolkt. Foto: Martin Damen Zondagochtend worden brandweerlieden op de kazerne wakker en merken ze op dat er goederen zijn gestolen in de nacht. Een raam van de garagedeur is ingegooid en dieven zijn via het gat naar binnengekropen. Ze nemen goederen mee die volgens de politie van essentieel belang zijn om levens te redden bij brand of ongelukken. De brandweerlieden hangen die dag een plank voor het gat en doen aangifte. Een nacht later is het opnieuw raak. Weer wordt er een raam ingegooid, nu het raam ernaast. De inbrekers gaan naar binnen via het gat en nemen opnieuw goederen mee. Twee jongens slaan vervolgens op de vlucht via de Ganzenveldstraat in de richting van de Beemsterstraat. Hydraulische spreider en schaar Bronnen melden aan AT5 dat onder andere een hydraulische spreider en hydraulische schaar zouden zijn meegenomen. Een woordvoerder van de politie kan dit niet bevestigen. Het is niet ondenkbaar dat zo'n spreider en schaar zijn meegenomen; RTL Nieuws meldde eerder al dat de stukken gereedschap populair zijn onder criminelen. Cijfers laten ook zien dat er landelijk een toename is aan inbraken bij brandweerkazernes. De speciale gereedschappen worden door de brandweer gebruikt om mensen en dieren te redden bij benarde situaties, zoals na bijvoorbeeld een ongeluk, een brand of een instorting. De spreider kan zware objecten uit elkaar duwen en de schaar kan door dik metaal knippen. Criminelen gebruiken het echter om rolluiken van onder andere juweliers en elektronicawinkels open te duwen en open te knippen. Dat gebeurde in januari bijvoorbeeld bij een winkel in Arnhem, zoals vorige week was te zien in het televisieprogramma Opsporing Verzocht. De spreider en schaar zijn voor de brandweer van belang in situaties waarin mensen vastzitten. De gereedschappen liggen klaar in de brandweerwagens, zodat ze dit niet nog hoeven te pakken als er een noodsituatie is. In beide gevallen lagen brandweerlieden te slapen op de kazerne tijdens hun dienst en stonden stand-by om uit te rukken. Volgens de politie kan er van geluk worden gesproken dat er beide nachten geen oproep kwam waarin gestolen goederen nodig waren. Politie zoekt getuigen De politie doet onderzoek naar de twee inbraken en vraagt getuigen die iets hebben gezien of gehoord of meer weten over de inbraken om zich te melden. Ook aan omwonenden met een videodeurbel of dashcam die van de periode voor, tijdens of na de inbraken beeld hebben om dit te delen.
