There will be no live student speakers at the City University of New York's School of Law or at New York University's school-specific ceremonies after former students gave speeches that included expressing support for Palestine and criticism of Israel. Rutgers University canceled biotech CEO Rami Elghandour's commencement speech at its School of Engineering's convocation, citing complaints about his social media posts on Israel and Palestine. And the University of Michigan's president issued a public apology after professor Derek Peterson praised pro-Palestine students during his commencement address. "Our students are being told that your families, Palestinian families, are expected to suffer and die, and you should be OK with it," says Noura Erakat, a Palestinian human rights attorney and professor at Rutgers University. Erakat adds that Rutgers professors have been asked not to teach about the conditions in Gaza. "We are asked to betray the empirical record, including the one on genocide and apartheid, and we refuse to do that." "This will be the third graduation and commencement ceremony in a row where we do not have a student speaker, we do not have a faculty speaker and we do not have a live-stream commencement," says Shivani Desai, a member of CUNY Law Students for Justice in Palestine. "They took all of that away from us, and they took that away specifically because of Palestine repression." The authors of a new study in the journal _Science_ conclude, "The abrupt withdrawal of USAID led to a significant and sustained increase in conflict across Africa's most USAID-dependent regions." We are joined by Austin Wright, one of the study's authors and a professor of public policy at the University of Chicago. "What we found is that that shutdown had these large effects," says Wright. "These are often double-digit percentage increases in the incidence, severity and lethality of violence across Africa in the affected regions." Under President Trump's proposal, which was submitted to Congress on Monday, the U.S. would lift its record-low refugee admissions figure from 7,500 to 17,500, with the additional openings reserved for Afrikaners. This comes as the administration continues to block the entry of refugees from other countries. The U.S. has resettled just over 6,000 refugees between October and April — all except three were from South Africa. Trump has said Afrikaners face racial persecution and genocide in South Africa, claims that have been rejected by the U.N. Human Rights Office, among others. Last year, he cut off aid to the country and boycotted the G20 summit in Johannesburg. "Whiteness is being recast as endangered," says Lebohang Pheko, a professor of practice at the University of Johannesburg. "There is a move towards the alt-right, the MAGA discourse, which is about replacement theory, and which is absolutely about displacing the idea that anything other than whiteness is normative." Pheko also suggests that Trump's actions toward South Africa are retribution for the genocide case it brought against Israel at International Court of Justice. "We are processing resettlement cases for white Afrikaners at a record pace," adds Sharif Aly, president of the International Refugee Assistance Project, which is currently litigating a class-action lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's dismantling of the United States refugee program. "This program has never been a fast program, and it's being expedited for just this one population." While Afrikaners are being quickly resettled, "thousands of other people who have went through years of vetting, who have went through years of persecution and violence," are being blocked from entering the U.S., says Aly. Afgelopen weekend kwam de Amsterdamse politie met een video om te waarschuwen voor zogenoemde meidenhuizen. Dat zijn WhatsAppgroepen waar soms wel honderden meisjes aan deelnemen en veel persoonlijke informatie delen. Maar het zijn niet alleen meiden die in de groepen zitten. Volgens de politie realiseren veel meisjes zich niet dat onbekenden ongemerkt kunnen meekijken. Veel jongeren kennen de groepen inmiddels. “Ja, ik ken het van TikTok”, vertelt een meisje op straat. “Groepen waarin allemaal meiden zitten waarin ze dingen van zichzelf delen, bijvoorbeeld hun outfit enzo.” Volgens social media-onderzoeker Mieke Oldeman is het niet vreemd dat jongeren zich aangetrokken voelen tot zulke groepen. “Jongeren willen heel graag ergens bij horen”, legt ze uit. “Het brein van jongeren is daar heel gevoelig voor. Een meidenkanaal is een makkelijke manier om ergens bij te horen. Veel makkelijker dan op een groepje meisjes afstappen.” Toch schuilt er volgens de politie een groot gevaar achter, de op eerste oog, onschuldige groepen. “Veel meisjes beginnen bijvoorbeeld met het verkopen van armbandjes”, zegt politieagente Mahasin Rahmouni. “Maar het zijn hele jonge kinderen, soms al vanaf groep 7, die niet bezig zijn met de gevaren die kunnen ontstaan door in zo’n groep te zitten.” Groepsdruk speelt grote rol Volgens Oldeman speelt groepsdruk een belangrijke rol bij de populariteit van de meidenkanalen. “In die kanalen gaat het over onderwerpen die veel meiden bezighouden”, legt ze uit. “Denk aan welke mascara nu populair is. Jongeren zijn bang dat ze iets missen als ze er niet in zitten. Als bijna iedereen uit je klas updates krijgt via zo’n kanaal, ga je er toch maar in.” Die druk kan er volgens Oldeman ook voor zorgen dat jongeren steeds meer van zichzelf blijven delen. "Als jij een kanaal hebt met veel volgers, omdat jij deelt hoe jij je make-up doet en je ouders willen dat je daarmee stopt, kan dat lastig zijn. Jongeren zijn bang dat volgers hen niet meer leuk vinden of afhaken. Daardoor ontstaat een voortdurende druk om online actief te blijven en persoonlijke dingen te delen.” Volgens de politie is het grootste probleem dat de groepen openbaar zijn. “Iedereen kan jouw kanaal in zonder dat je weet wie meekijkt”, aldus Rahmouni. “Mensen kunnen foto’s, filmpjes en persoonlijke informatie zien zonder dat jij weet wie dat allemaal heeft bekeken.” In de groepen wordt volgens de politie onder meer gedeeld hoe laat jongeren uit school zijn, wat ze dragen en wat ze in het weekend gaan doen. Volgens onderzoeker Oldeman is een verbod niet de beste oplossing. “Uiteindelijk wil je dat een kind zelf besluit uit zo’n kanaal te gaan”, zegt ze. “Als je het alleen verbiedt, bestaat de kans dat een kind het stiekem blijft doen. It turns out these two cities learned very different lessons from fire. New York grew upward and inward, packing people into dense tenements where the nightmare was being trapped inside. Chicago grew outward, building quickly and cheaply with wood, where the bigger fear was fire racing from building to building. So New York often dealt with the problem by attaching escape routes to the outside. Chicago, under pressure from insurers and new building laws, pushed more of its fire safety into the construction of the building itself. In ‘De Spots van…’ neemt een bekende Amsterdammer je mee naar zijn of haar favoriete plekken in de binnenstad. Dit keer de beurt aan burgemeester Femke Halsema. We beginnen bij een klassieker: Café Schiller, dat al meer dan 100 jaar aan het Rembrandtplein zit. De zaak werd iets na de opening van het gelijknamige hotel geopend. In de jaren tussen de beide oorlogen was het zowel in het hotel als in het restaurant een komen en gaan van beroemdheden uit binnen- en buitenland. De Schillerbar was eveneens een geliefde pleisterplaats van de Amsterdamse elite en bij uitstek hét trefpunt van kunstenaars en artiesten. De schilderijen, kunstwerken en het art-deco interieur in café Schiller herinneren de bezoeker tot op de dag van vandaag aan die beroemde jaren. Tientallen ondernemers en particulieren zijn gedupeerd door de grote brand in een bedrijfspand aan de Weesperstraat in Diemen. Naast brandschade is er ook schade door het vele bluswater en de rook. Het ging om een bedrijfsverzamelgebouw. "Het is toevallig het pand waarin ik werk", vertelde iemand die wegreed in de auto. "Ineens was er rook en toen moesten we naar buiten. Het is wel heftig natuurlijk. Want ons pand waar we al jaren zitten is waarschijnlijk verloren. Dus we zullen een alternatief moeten zoeken."Werknemers van omliggende bedrijven moesten ook snel naar buiten na het uitbreken van de brand, die zich verder uitbreidde. Aanvankelijk ging het nog om grijze rook, maar later werd dat een enorme zwarte rookwolk. Ook sloegen er metershoge vlammen uit het dak.  Opslagruimtes De brand was rond 10.00 uur uitgebroken op de tweede en bovenste etage. Op de begane grond zitten alleen al ruim zeventig opslagruimtes voor ondernemers en particulieren. Ondanks dat de brand niet naar die ruimtes oversloeg, kunnen ze voorlopig niet meer gebruikt worden. Of dit later wel kan, is nog de vraag. Rond twee uur vanmiddag was de brand onder controle.
