Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty announced Monday that federal agent Christian Castro will face four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime when he allegedly shot Julio Sosa-Celis through a door. Federal authorities have refused to cooperate with the investigation, as well as separate probes into the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Emilia González Avalos, executive director of the Minnesota-based social justice organization Unidos MN, welcomes the charges as a victory for civil society and the rule of law. "That is what democracy looks like. It looks like separation of powers and getting material consequences [for] wrongdoing," she says. Jean Carroll. In 2019, the famous advice columnist published a memoir describing an encounter in the 1990s when she says Trump sexually assaulted her in a department store. When Trump denied the account, Carroll sued him and won $5 million in damages, with a unanimous New York jury finding Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation. After Trump made disparaging remarks about Carroll, she sued him again and won a second defamation judgment for $83.3 million. Federal courts have upheld both verdicts, but now Trump's attorneys are asking the Supreme Court to overturn them, asserting he has "absolute immunity" as president. Explosies bij woningen, daar is de gemiddelde Amsterdammer tegenwoordig bijna aan gewend geraakt, maar over plofkraken was het al een tijdje stil. Vorig jaar werd zelfs geen enkele pinautomaat in de stad opgeblazen, terwijl de teller dit jaar alweer op zeven staat. "De ramen trilden, het was echt een flinke klap", vertelt een buurtbewoner afgelopen donderdag aan AT5, nadat die nacht op de Ceintuurbaan een explosief was afgegaan. Wonder boven wonder raakte niemand gewond bij de plofkraak; in de straat werd later nog een explosief gevonden dat niet was afgegaan. Het was de zevende plofkraak in de stad sinds het begin van dit jaar. "Een opvallende stijging", noemt criminoloog Jasper van der Kemp het. "Het lijkt alsof er een ontdekking van criminelen is dat plofkraken de moeite waard zijn." Een paar dagen eerder was het raak op de Jan Pieter Heijestraat, waar een hele gevel werd weggeblazen. Eerder sneed een tiener zich al aan glasscherven die een plofkraak op de Slotermeerlaan veroorzaakte. Geldstortautomaten De afgelopen jaren was het opblazen van pinautomaten juist onaantrekkelijker geworden, doordat automaten 's nachts werden uitgezet en geldlades beter beveiligd werden. Dit jaar valt op dat criminelen zich regelmatig richten op automaten waar ondernemers hun geld storten, de zogenaamde sealbagautomaten. Afgelopen maart besloot Geldmaat haar zakelijke geldstortautomaten waar mensen boven of naast wonen tijdelijk te sluiten, nadat er in een week meerdere explosies plaatsvonden. Volgens explosievenexpert Ad van Riel valt die verschuiving van interesse naar stortautomaten goed te verklaren: "Het criminele circuit zit ook niet stil en die gaan kijken: what's next best? En dat zijn op dit moment de afstortkluizen." "Zo'n explosie kan net zo dodelijk zijn als een projectiel" Explosievenexpert Ad van Riel "Dus misschien is het beeld voor de criminelen dat de beveiliging van die systemen anders is en dat het daardoor makkelijker is om bij de buit te komen", aldus Jasper van der Kemp. "Want we weten van geldautomaten dat de beveiliging dermate goed is dat het heel moeilijk is om daar los geld uit te halen." Flitspoeder Criminelen beproeven dus hun geluk en hopen bij de stortautomaten, in tegenstelling tot bij de beter beveiligde pinautomaten, wél buit te kunnen halen. Daarvoor gebruiken ze ook steeds krachtiger explosieven, zoals cobra's. Van Riel: "Daar zit flitspoeder in, en dat is een van de krachtigste kruiten die er bestaan. Én volop voorhanden: je hoeft er alleen maar de grens voor over te rijden." In landen als Polen en Italië is het zware vuurwerk eenvoudig te verkrijgen. Volgens Van Riel is het bovendien kinderlijk eenvoudig zelf zo'n explosief samen te stellen: "Dat kan ik je in een middagje leren." Levensgevaarlijk Ook de politie maakt zich zorgen over de nieuwe manieren waarop plofkrakers proberen automaten open te krijgen. In een reactie laten zij weten: "We zien dat criminelen een constante belangstelling hebben voor contant geld. In deze gevallen lijkt het erop dat er een nieuwe manier is gebruikt. We zien nu dat de sealbagautomaten het doelwit zijn. Niemand met een Ajax-hart zit er op te wachten, maar de play-offs voor Europees voetbal moeten gespeeld worden, en dat gebeurt donderdag in het stadion van FC Volendam. Maar elk nadeel heeft z’n voordeel: de Volendammers vinden het hartstikke leuk dat Ajax in hun dorp speelt. Het verhaal is inmiddels bekend: door de concertreeks van Harry Styles moet Ajax elders de play-offs spelen. En dus wijkt de club uit naar het Kras Stadion in Volendam. “Ik vind het leuk dat Ajax hier komt”, vertelt een Volendamse winkelier. Een andere vrouw vult hem aan: “Het is toch feestelijk dat ze hier spelen.” Ook supporters reageren enthousiast. “Het gebeurt niet vaak dat onze grote broer uit Amsterdam hier belangrijke wedstrijden komt spelen”, zegt een fan van zowel FC Volendam als Ajax. Joop Leeuwendaal, zanger van de Ajax Marsch en inwoner van Volendam, kijkt er toch anders naar. “Ik ben er eigenlijk niet zo blij mee. Ik vind het echt vreselijk”, zegt hij voor het Kras Stadion. Vooral het spel van Ajax baart hem zorgen. “Ik ben mijn hele leven Ajacied in hart en nieren, maar er zit gewoon geen voetbal in”, zegt Leeuwendaal. Toch heeft hij nog wel een tip voor Ajacieden die donderdag naar Volendam afreizen. “Kom lekker met het openbaar vervoer. Of pak de boot, dan kom je mooi op de dijk uit. Dan kun je eerst nog even wat eten en daarna zo doorlopen naar het stadion.” Of supporters van FC Groningen donderdag ook op de dijk lopen, is nog maar de vraag. Fans van de club zijn namelijk niet welkom bij de play-offwedstrijd. Dat besluit heeft de driehoek van Edam-Volendam — burgemeester, politie en Openbaar Ministerie — genomen na de ‘ernstige ongeregeldheden’ rond de verloren wedstrijd van FC Volendam tegen Telstar, staat in een persbericht. FC Groningen noemt het besluit ‘onaanvaardbaar’ en beraadt zich op vervolgstappen. Bestelbusjes, bakfietsen en kleine elektrische wagentjes. Elke dag zie je wel een voertuig van een bezorgbedrijf door de stad gaan. Dat is ook niet zo gek, want Amsterdam is met maar liefst 125.000 pakketjes per dag echt een pakketstad. Ook onder het AT5-panel is het bestellen van pakketjes populair, maar zes op de tien panelleden vindt dat het bestelgedrag van mensen is doorgeslagen. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek waar bijna 2000 Amsterdammers aan meewerkten. Meer dan de helft van de panelleden bestelt elke maand een pakketje, en bijna 9 procent doet dat zelfs elke week. Vooral dat er online meer te verkrijgen is dan in de winkel en het gemak spelen een grote rol. De meeste panelleden bestellen online kleding, maar ook elektronica, huishoudelijke apparaten en boeken zijn populair om te bestellen. Opvallend is dat het aantal panelleden dat vindt dat het bestelgedrag is doorgeslagen, nagenoeg gelijk is aan het aantal panelleden die in ieder geval één keer per maand wat online bestelt. Annemieke Bieringa is een van de panelleden die het bestelgedrag te ver vindt gaan. "Het is compleet doorgeslagen. Iedereen bestelt maar, en ook heel erg veel. Dat is waarschijnlijk ook de lol ervan, dat je veel kan bestellen en kan terugsturen. In een winkel kan je niet vijftig kledingstukken passen zonder iets te halen." Tientallen pro-Palestijnse demonstranten hebben sinds vanmiddag twee gebouwen op de campus van de Vrije Universiteit bezet. Het gaat om het BelleVUe-gebouw en de gang van de bestuursvleugel in het hoofdgebouw. Volg in dit liveblog alle updates. De mensen voor de ingang van het pand moeten daar weggaan van de politie. "Als u daar niet aan voldoet, wordt u weggedreven door de politie en dit kan gepaard gaan met geweld." Tientallen pro-Palestijnse demonstranten hebben sinds vanmiddag twee gebouwen op de campus van de Vrije Universiteit bezet. De ME is op dit moment bezig met een ontruiming. Aan het begin van de middag begon er een pro-Palestina-demonstratie waarin de VU werd opgeroepen om de banden met Israëlische instellingen en defensiegerelateerde samenwerkingen te verbreken. Bij de demonstratie trokken de demonstranten naar binnen bij het BelleVUe-gebouw en ook bij de bestuursgang van de universiteit, waar het College van Bestuur zit. De universiteit heeft twee keer opgeroepen om het protest bij de bestuursgang te verplaatsen naar het campusplein en om de gezichtsbedekkende kleding af te doen, maar daar hebben de demonstranten nog geen gehoor aangegeven. "Er zal nog een laatste vordering plaatsvinden. Als hier opnieuw geen gehoor aan wordt gegeven, kunnen de demonstranten door de politie naar buiten worden begeleid", aldus de VU. De VU zegt de vrijheid van meningsuiting en het recht op protest te respecteren, maar wel 'zolang dit plaatsvindt binnen de geldende huisregels en de veiligheid van studenten, medewerkers en bezoekers niet in gevaar komt'. "Een bezetting van een universiteitsgebouw en het dragen van gezichtsbedekkende kleding vallen daar niet onder." Volgens de universiteit zijn er barricades aangebracht bij het gebouw. De VU sloot vanmiddag uit voorzorg het hoofdgebouw af. Studenten en medewerkers worden gevraagd om hun studenten- of medewerkerspas als ze naar binnen willen. Eten voor demonstranten De studentenvakbond SRVU kwam aan het begin van de avond eten langsbrengen voor de demonstranten. "Ze zitten er nu al een tijdje en docenten zijn zo lief geweest om wat boodschappen te halen om hen te voorzien van wat basisbehoeften." Op de vraag of het de taak is van de studentenvakbond om een bezetting te ondersteunen zeggen ze dat het 'helaas steeds vaker zo is'. "We zien dat het geweld vanuit de politie tegen studenten steeds groter wordt. Het wordt daardoor risicovoller om mee te doen aan zo'n protest en wij zijn er als vakbond voor dat er protest kan zijn." In the early days of car manufacturing, Henry Ford gets most of the credit for inventing the moving production line. But the real spark may have come from William Klann. In 1913, Klann visited a meatpacking factory and noticed something revolutionary: instead of workers moving around the product, the product moved to the workers. Back at Ford, they began experimenting with this idea - not on cars, but on something smaller: magnetos. They replaced long workbenches with a conveyor belt, forcing each stage of production into a strict sequence. The effect was immediate. In just a month, output jumped from around 800 magnetos a day to nearly 3,000.
