In Wenen gaat vanavond de finale van het Eurovisie Songfestival plaatsvinden. Ondanks dat Nederland dit jaar niet deelneemt aan de wedstrijd, zijn er wel Nederlandse fans in het oranje naar Oostenrijk afgereisd.

Na zestien jaar dreigt de pont tussen Badhoevedorp en het Amsterdamse Bos te verdwijnen. Schippers Erik en Martin, die er als vrijwilliger mee varen, stoppen na dit jaar. Ze willen graag dat er opvolgers komen, maar die zijn nog niet te vinden. De pont vaart alle weekenden tussen half april en half oktober, plus nog een aantal feestdagen. Maar omdat schipper Martin volgend jaar 80 wordt is het voor beide schippers, die naast elkaar wonen in Badhoevedorp, wel tijd om aan stoppen te denken. De pont heet Ome Piet, vernoemd naar de man die vroeger in een roeiboot fietsers naar het Amsterdamse Bos bracht. De twee zoeken al een jaar naar opvolgers, maar die zijn niet te vinden. Sommige bewoners van Badhoevedorp hadden wel interesse, maar ze vonden het varen met slecht weer toch tegenvallen of wilden het niet elk weekend doen. Erik en Martin hebben daar wel begrip voor, ze hopen vooral dat de gemeente Haarlemmermeer te hulp schiet. "Wij zijn dit uit een ideaal begonnen, om het bos bereikbaar te maken", legt Erik uit. "En als dat wegvalt. Dat zou ongelooflijk zonde zijn. Dat kan iedereen bevestigen die het bos bezoekt." Er is nog een pont die naar het Amsterdamse Bos vaart, de Helena op de Nieuwe Meer. Maar die dreigt dit jaar ook te verdwijnen, doordat de subsidie in principe na 2026 stopt. Dat betekent dat de kans groot is dat er vanaf 2027 geen enkele pont meer van en naar het bos zal varen. Gemeente noemde pont Ome Piet eerder alternatief voor grote pont In 2024 dreigde pont Helena te moeten stoppen omdat er een eind kwam aan de jaarlijkse 50.000 euro subsidie van de gemeente. Wethouder Melanie van der Horst noemde toen pont Ome Piet als alternatief en zei daar expliciet bij dat die 'wel zonder gemeentelijke bijdrage vaart'. Na meerdere protesten van buurtbewoners en vragen van politici kwam er uiteindelijk voor 2025 en 2026 alsnog subsidie. Of er voor na 2027 nog subsidie voor de grote pont komt, is maar zeer de vraag. Een woordvoerder van Van der Horst en een woordvoerder van het Amsterdamse Bos gaan tegenover AT5 alleen in op de situatie bij pont Ome Piet. "Wij hopen ook dat de ponteigenaar een oplossing vindt waardoor het pontje ook in de toekomst kan blijven varen", laten ze weten. Volgens Erik en Martin zou de pont bijvoorbeeld kunnen blijven varen als er mensen met een achterstand tot de arbeidsmarkt op gaan varen, die begeleid worden door ambtenaren. Dat zou in andere gemeenten ook gebeuren. Een woordvoerder van de gemeente Haarlemmermeer laat weten dat er vanuit de gemeenteraad al vragen over de pont zijn gesteld. Een grote teleurstelling voor alle mensen die vannacht hebben gebivakkeerd voor de deur van een horlogewinkel in de P.C. Gisteren en vanochtend kwamen vele tientallen mensen af op de winkel, met onder meer klapstoeltjes, om de verkoop van zo'n honderd exclusieve horloges niet te missen. Sommigen hadden er de nacht doorgebracht, anderen kwamen 's ochtends vroeg, maar allemaal vingen ze alsnog bot. De eigenaar van de winkel besloot de winkel vandaag dicht te houden, omdat de veiligheid van medewerkers en wachtenden niet meer kon worden gegarandeerd. Een woordvoerder van de politie zei dat de situatie onrustig was en vroeg iedereen voor de deur weg te gaan. Rond het middaguur was de rust wedergekeerd en waren de meesten vertrokken. In het voorjaar van 1982 overlijdt in het AMC in Amsterdam de eerste Nederlandse patiënt aan een mysterieuze nieuwe ziekte: aids. Arts en microbioloog Roel Coutinho is op dat moment hoofd van de afdeling Volksgezondheid van de GGD in Amsterdam. Het is het begin van de grootste epidemie uit de 125-jarige geschiedenis van de GGD. "Ik heb er slapeloze nachten van gehad, het aantal doden verdubbelde bijna elke dag." "Ik had er toen wel van gehoord, maar we dachten dat is iets wat in Amerika speelt", vertelt Roel Coutino over de eerste berichten over de mysterieuze ziekte, die later aids zou gaan heten. Dat het virus zó om zich heen zou slaan had hij nooit gedacht. "Toen er eindelijk een test was, onderzochten we 750 homoseksuele mannen en druggebruikers. Een derde van hen bleek het virus te dragen, zonder dat ze klachten hadden. We waren totaal in shock." Duizenden slachtoffers Het virus eiste duizenden slachtoffers, vooral in Amsterdam. En niet alleen onder homoseksuele mannen, druggebruikers en bloeddonoren, maar ook in mindere mate onder heteroseksuelen. Het duurde nog tot 1996 voordat er levensreddende medicijnen beschikbaar kwamen. Voor de inmiddels 63-jarige Marjolein Annegarn kwam de behandeling met nieuwe medicijnen net op tijd. Ze raakte in 1986 geïnfecteerd met het hiv-virus en ontdekte het toen ze getest werd bij de bloedbank waar ze zich had aangemeld als donor. "Ik dacht dat ik niet ouder dan dertig zou worden en had mijn naderende dood al geaccepteerd. Nu had ik opeens mijn leven terug. Dit jaar bestaat de GGD 125 jaar. Met een driedelige serie duikt AT5 in de geschiedenis van de Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst van Amsterdam. Vandaag deel 1: van noodzakelijke zuigelingenzorg tot scepsis over vaccinaties. Een dokter in een witte jas onderzoekt een jongetje met een stethoscoop in een medisch kantoor. Een andere man in pak zit vlakbij. In de kamer staan een bureau, een weegschaal, medische apparatuur en een wastafel. Jeugdzorg in eerste helft van de vorige eeuw - Foto: GGD Amsterdam De komst van een gemeentelijke gezondheidsdienst in 1901 was een verademing voor veel Amsterdammers. De armoede was groot, de gemiddelde levensverwachting was slechts 40 jaar en een kwart van de zuigelingen stierf in het eerste levensjaar. Voor het eerst hadden Amsterdammers die dat niet konden betalen, massaal toegang tot medische hulp. Hoe is dat nu? Wie steunt er anno 2026 op de GGD en zitten Amsterdammers nog te wachten op een gezondheidsdienst vanuit de overheid? GGD-directeur Anna van der Hulst: "Ook toen waren er Amsterdammers die vonden: waar bemoei je je mee? Maar wat wij doen is nooit met een vingertje wijzen, maar zorg in de wijk bieden vanuit hun vertrouwde omgeving." Morgen deel 2 van de serie over de 125-jarige geschiedenis van de GGD. Gisteravond zetten de eerste mensen hun klapstoeltje neer voor de deur van een horlogewinkel in de P.C. Hooftstraat. Morgenochtend vanaf tien uur verkopen zij zo'n honderd exclusieve horloges. Een enkele liefhebber - maar vooral veel toekomstige verkopers - willen dat niet missen.  Het miezert in de P.C. Hooftstraat dus komen uit verschillende tassen paraplu's tevoorschijn. "Ik ben niet bang voor een beetje regen, want ik ben goed voorbereid. Ik heb twee bananen, zes biertjes en het nummer van de pizzaboer. Ik heb ook een paraplu en twee broeken aan", vertelt een man die achter in de rij aansluit. Hij lijkt een van de weinige bezoekers te zijn die een horloge komt kopen en deze daadwerkelijk te houden. De meeste mensen in de rij zien het als een slimme deal.  "Ik ben zeventien jaar. Er zijn geen baantjes waar ik omgerekend zo snel geld kan verdienen", vertelt een jongen in de rij. "Ik wil hem zo snel mogelijk verkopen. Ik denk dat ik er wel tienduizend euro voor kan krijgen. En het horloge zelf kost vierhonderd euro, dus reken maar uit." De meest fanatieke verkoper moet Anton uit Rusland zijn. Hij kwam speciaal met het vliegtuig naar Amsterdam om het horloge te halen. "Ik vind het niet leuk. Het is koud en het regent. Maar ik kan wel lekker wat geld verdienen. Morgenavond vlieg ik weer terug.
