In the occupied West Bank, two Palestinian teenagers were shot and killed by Israeli soldiers Wednesday as settlers and troops entered the village of al-Mughayyir. The victims were identified as 19-year-old Omar al-Naasan and 16-year-old Khalil Shehadeh. Eyewitnesses say snipers opened fire after Palestinian residents confronted settlers who were stealing their sheep. Meanwhile, Israel has razed the Palestinian village of Khirbet al-Tabban in the Masafer Yatta region, after ordering residents to evacuate their homes. Israel's military had declared the area a restricted military training zone — even though settlers have been establishing outposts and farms in the area. According to B'Tselem, Israel has expelled 66 Palestinian communities from their homes since October 2023.

"Een van de ouders is eigenaar van Canal Motorboats, dus ik heb contact met hem opgenomen om te kijken of we wat konden regelen", vertelt directeur Nadine Duymaer van Twist. "Er zijn zeven leraren die uit Noord moeten komen, en als dat niet lukt kunnen we sommige lessen niet geven of moeten we klassen verdelen." Een groep mensen staat op de blauw-witte veerboot IJveer 55 in Amsterdam terwijl deze de kade binnenvaart. Sommige mensen hebben fietsen bij zich, en op een bord achter hen staat dat roken verboden is. Op de achtergrond zijn water en een groot gebouw te z Inmiddels hebben ook leerlingen zelf zich aangemeld om mee te gaan op het geïmproviseerde pontje en willen omliggende scholen ook meedoen. "We hebben een boot waar veertig mensen op kunnen", aldus Duymaer van Twist. Ze benadrukt wel dat ze het belang van de staking volledig inziet. "Maar we moeten de kinderen wel naar school kunnen laten gaan." Ook Daan Meeuwig, eigenaar van restaurant Barracuda, kwam met een eigen oplossing in de vorm van een Zwitsers salonschip. "Je kan niet echt naar Barracuda komen door de staking", vertelt Meeuwig. "Maar stiekem speelde ik al langer met dit idee, omdat er helemaal geen pontje naar het Hamerkwartier gaat." Ook omliggende restaurants doen mee met het initiatief. "Het lijkt mij heel leuk als dit een blijvertje wordt. Alle reacties zijn ook heel enthousiast." Ondanks de onhandige situaties die bij de staking komen kijken, kijkt Meeuwig er ook naar uit: "Misschien wordt dit wel de leukste dag in plaats van de stomste dag." Havenbeheerder Port of Amsterdam raadt mensen af om zelf de oversteek over het IJ te gaan maken. "Het mag wel, maar je steekt in feite gewoon een snelweg over", vertelt een woordvoerder van het havenbedrijf. "En als je dan denkt: ik ga het toch doen, houd je dan in ieder geval aan de vaarregels en zorg dat je goed om je heen kijkt.
