India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party has organized historic waves of protests since the summer targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party’s education ministry, its purging of 130 million names from voter rolls and high rates of youth unemployment, among other things. Indian writer and activist Arundhati Roy says that in the beginning, masses of young people “not really affiliated to any political party” took part in Cockroach-led demonstrations. The movement was then stabilized by the “entry of these very disciplined, inventive and serious left party students” and is now supported by India’s leading opposition parties.

Uit onderzoek van Zembla en NH blijkt dat de twee mannen slachtoffer zijn geworden van een omvangrijk mensensmokkelnetwerk onder leiding van Idriss Ghazi Kareem. In de nacht van 12 augustus 2023 stapten Samiullah en Ahmad Jan ten noorden van Calais aan boord van een niet-zeewaardige rubberboot, samen met 66 andere migranten. Op open water begaf de motor het en na een explosie scheurde de boot. Zes mannen overleefden het ongeluk niet. De Franse justitie rolde na de bootramp het mensensmokkelnetwerk op. In november 2025 werd Kareem in Parijs samen met acht anderen veroordeeld tot vijftien jaar gevangenisstraf. Hij regelde onder meer boten en andere nautische goederen voor overtochten over Het Kanaal. Uit het strafdossier, in handen van Zembla en NH, blijkt dat Kareem meerdere keren in Nederland was, ook drie dagen voor de dodelijke ramp. In een door de politie afgeluisterd telefoongesprek zegt hij tegen iemand die ook smokkelt: ‘Mijn oom zit in Nederland en controleert alle boten.’ Volgens de Koninklijke Marechaussee spelen kopstukken van mensensmokkelnetwerken vaker een rol in Nederland. Ze verdienen miljoenen euro’s aan het organiseren van overtochten naar Engeland. Nederland speelt een belangrijke rol in de handel in nautische goederen, stelt de Marechaussee: “Het gaat om de invoer, doorvoer en opslag van nautische goederen die naar de Franse kust worden vervoerd, om vervolgens ingezet te worden om migranten naar Groot-Brittannië over te laten steken.” De Marechaussee wil verder niet ingaan op de bevindingen uit het strafdossier van Zembla en NH, omdat die wellicht onderdeel zijn van een lopend onderzoek. Uit het Franse strafdossier blijkt dat de rubberboot, motor en reddingsvesten van slechte kwaliteit waren. Officier van justitie Petra Hoekstra ziet hetzelfde materiaal terug in haar onderzoeken naar mensensmokkel. “De rubberboten zijn niet-zeewaardig en meestal afkomstig uit China. Ze worden via Turkije naar Nederland geïmporteerd.” Uit afgeluisterde gesprekken leidt het Openbaar Ministerie af dat handelaren weten dat de materialen ongeschikt zijn voor een oversteek van Het Kanaal. “Voor ons is dat een strafverzwarende omstandigheid. Ze vinden dat het geld opweegt tegen een mensenleven. En dat betekent dat ze mensen bewust zetten op drijvende doodskisten.” Politierechercheur Fetze Venema werkte tweeënhalf jaar aan de identificatie van de lichaamsdelen die op Texel aanspoelden. Samen met het Rode Kruis spoorde hij familieleden van de vermiste mannen in Afghanistan op voor DNA-onderzoek. In de zomer van 2026 werd bekend dat het om Samiullah en Ahmad Jan ging. Wie denkt aan het Zwanenmeer denkt misschien wel aan klassieke muziek en sierlijke danspassen. Tijdens de opening van het Amsterdam Dance Event ging het anders dan normaal: hiphop en ballet kwamen samen op elektronische muziek. "Een unieke vertoning van het Zwanenmeer", zo noemen Ernst Meisner en Marco Gerris de openingsact van ADE. De twee mannen zijn de gezichten achter de eenmalige uitvoering in de Gashouder: ''We waren wel zenuwachtig, maar het was echt kicken'', vertelt Ernst Meisner van Het Nationale Ballet. Op het podium verschenen traditiegetrouw de ballerina's in witte tutu's, maar ook hiphop en andere dansstijlen deden mee. "Een groot thema van het Zwanenmeer is identiteit", vertelt Marco Gerris van ISH Dance Collective. Daarom was er ruimte voor verschillende dansstijlen. Het roept de vraag op: ''Wie ben ik en welke ruimte neem ik in?" "Het ontroerde me echt om te zien hoe alle dansstijlen samenkwamen", vertelt een van de bezoekers van de uitvoering Swam Lake Remixed. "Niemand wist dat dit zou passen bij ADE, maar het was een geweldige kans om deze voorstelling te maken", vertelt Gerris. Kan de Duitse steun aan Oekraïne onder druk komen te staan door de groeiende invloed van de AfD en BSW? Alice Weidel, partijleider van de Duitse AfD, wil een einde aan de financiering van de oorlog in Oekraïne. In een interview met The Economist stelt ze dat Duitsland zwaar te lijden heeft onder de gevolgen van de oorlog. Ze pleit voor herstel van de economische banden met Rusland en trekt de democratische legitimiteit van de Oekraïense regering in twijfel vanwege het uitblijven van verkiezingen. Maar Weidel staat niet alleen. Ook de partij Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) wil de militaire steun aan Oekraïne stopzetten en de relaties met Rusland herstellen. Daarbij speelt ook de politieke machtsverhouding een belangrijke rol. Volgens Sahra Wagenknecht is de strategie om de AfD politiek buiten te sluiten mislukt. BSW staat open voor samenwerking met de partij van Weidel, die bij de deelstaatverkiezingen als grootste uit de bus kwam. Toch betekent de gezamenlijke motie niet dat Duitsland zijn militaire steun aan Oekraïne daadwerkelijk beëindigt. De motie is symbolisch. Het besluit over de Duitse steun ligt bij de federale regering van Merz, die Oekraïne blijft steunen.
