On the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, we remember that dispossession and exile are not mere footnotes of the past but living, ongoing realities. To speak of justice today is to name the catastrophe of 1948 and to recognise that no future can be built on forgetting. Freedom and equal rights for all, from the river to the sea, is the only vision worthy of the name. As we mark another Nakba anniversary, the genocide that started then is intensifying. What we witness in Gaza and across the occupied territories is not a war, not clash of equals, nor a tragic but inevitable conflict — it is the violent, relentless logic of white settler terra nullius colonialism, dressed in modern military hardware and sustained by western complicity. A people is being erased, deemed superfluous, their humanity denied so that their erasure may be justified. To commemorate the Nakba is to stand with the living against the coloniser’s lie that some lives are mere obstacles. It is to insist that remembrance must become resistance, and resistance is not only a prerequisite for liberty but also of existence. Waar begin vorige eeuw Amsterdammers stonden te springen om medische hulp, wordt de publieke gezondheidszorg tegenwoordig nog wel eens als overheidsbemoeienis gezien. Dit jaar bestaat de GGD 125 jaar. Met een driedelige serie duikt AT5 in de geschiedenis van de Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst van Amsterdam. Vandaag deel 1: van noodzakelijke zuigelingenzorg tot scepsis over vaccinaties. De komst van een gemeentelijke gezondheidsdienst in 1901 was een verademing voor veel Amsterdammers. De armoede was groot, de gemiddelde levensverwachting was slechts 40 jaar en een kwart van de zuigelingen stierf in het eerste levensjaar. Voor het eerst hadden Amsterdammers die dat niet konden betalen, massaal toegang tot medische hulp. Hoe is dat nu? Wie steunt er anno 2026 op de GGD en zitten Amsterdammers nog te wachten op een gezondheidsdienst vanuit de overheid? GGD-directeur Anna van der Hulst: "Ook toen waren er Amsterdammers die vonden: waar bemoei je je mee? Maar wat wij doen is nooit met een vingertje wijzen, maar zorg in de wijk bieden vanuit hun vertrouwde omgeving."  Morgen deel 2 van de serie over de 125-jarige geschiedenis van de GGD. "Er is heel veel Haagse discussie, maar we zijn al die jaren geen stap verder gekomen.” VNG-voorzitter Sharon Dijksma is kritisch op het kabinet over het vastgelopen asielbeleid. Volgens Dijksma blijft Den Haag steken in politieke discussies, terwijl gemeenten worden opgezadeld met de gevolgen van de opvangcrisis. "We zijn al die jaren helemaal geen stap verder gekomen", zei ze bij #Nieuwsuur. De druk op gemeenten is groot: het COA zoekt op dit moment nog 14.000 opvangplekken, elke week komen er bijna 900 mensen bij, en slechts 7 procent van afgewezen asielzoekers verlaat Nederland ook echt. Dat is het laagste percentage van heel Europa. In verkiezingstijd beloofden politieke partijen van links tot rechts nog stevige maatregelen. Maar Dijksma meent dat daar weinig van terecht is gekomen. "Dan moet je op een gegeven moment ook met elkaar leveren." Ze wijst op "veel bureaucratie, veel traagheid" in Den Haag, en een terugkeerbeleid dat volgens haar "tot nu toe niet effectief" is geweest. Tegelijkertijd waarschuwt ze politici ervoor om niet alle asielzoekers over één kam te scheren. "Politici die alsmaar dat beeld blijven voeden, zijn net zo goed probleemveroorzakers als degenen die niet in staat zijn om de hand aan de ploeg te zetten als het om beleid gaat." One of those books, the 2015 memoir “Reasons to Stay Alive,” had even been a best seller in England, his home nation. Yet, “The Midnight Library” was a true breakout phenomenon. The novel, about a depressed woman who, after deciding to end her own life, ends up in a magical library in which every book presents her with an alternative life, eventually sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. The author’s new book, “The Midnight Train,” takes place on a parallel track. In it, an older man dies and finds himself on a train, able to revisit key moments in his life on his way to the hereafter. Van Birmese buikspek tot zalm van het spit, en van lokale biertjes tot Palestijnse hibiscuslimonade: tot en met zondag staan er meer dan 80 foodtrucks op festival de Rollende Keukens in het Westerpark. Zo ook de foodtruck van kok Salma Barakat uit Gaza, die traditionele Palestijnse gerechten serveert. "Het geeft kracht om hier te zijn." Het Westerpark ziet er deze Hemelvaartsdag anders uit dan op een doorsnee dag: er staan 80 foodtrucks en de geuren van onder meer gegrild vlees en kruiden en specerijen hangen in de lucht. Het is de achttiende editie van de Rollende Keukens en zoals ieder jaar trekt het festival veel bezoekers. Het evenement trekt niet alleen Amsterdammers, maar ook bezoekers uit de rest van het land. Sommigen komen alleen voor de sfeer, anderen vooral om zoveel mogelijk verschillende gerechten te proeven. “Dit is al mijn tweede gerecht”, vertelt een bezoeker. “Ik ben begonnen met oesters en ga nu verder met de chili kip.” Een van de foodtrucks is van Salma Barakat, die in 2018 vluchtte uit Gaza en sindsdien in Nederland werkt als kok en cateraar. Voor haar betekent koken op het festival meer dan alleen eten verkopen. "Het voelt goed om hier te zijn, het geeft me kracht”, zo zegt ze. "Hiermee ondersteun ik mijn familie daar om te overleven." Haar volledige opbrengst tijdens het festival gaat naar haar broers en zussen in Gaza. Despite dangerous conditions and a near-fatal entrapment while using heavy diving gear, the lure of lost treasure keeps him determined. The story highlights both the risks and the enduring appeal of underwater exploration. Note: Arthur McKee Jr., known as Art "Silver Bar" McKee, was a noted Florida treasure diver and is often referred to as "the father of modern treasure diving" or the "The Treasure Hunter's Treasure Hunter."
