Van Birmese buikspek tot zalm van het spit en van lokale biertjes tot Palestijnse hibiscus Limonade: meer dan tachtig foodtrucks hebben zich van 13 tot en met 17 mei verzameld in het Westerpark.DDe toegang is gratis, de prijzen zijn Amsterdams.  Het Westerpark ziet er op deze Hemelvaartsdag heel anders uit dan normaal: er staan 80 foodtrucks en de lucht hangt vol met de geur van gegrild vlees, gekruide sauzen en verschillende specerijen. Het is de achttiende editie van Rollende Keukens en zoals elk jaar trekt het festival een hoop bezoekers. "Het is een plek waar zoveel verschillende eetculturen bij elkaar komen, dat vind ik zo bijzonder” vertelt een bezoeker vrolijk. Het festival is weer razend populair en trekt niet alleen Amsterdammers, maar ook bezoekers uit de rest van het land “qoute oosten”. Sommigen komen alleen voor de sfeer, anderen vooral om zoveel mogelijk verschillende gerechten te proeven. “Quote”, vertelt een bezoeker. “Quote” De grote ster van dit jaar is Salma Barakat. De chef uit Gaza heeft een ereplaats gekregen in de toren op het festivalterrein, waar ze traditionele Palestijnse gerechten serveert. Salma vluchtte in 2018 uit Gaza en werkt sindsdien in Nederland als kok en cateraar. Voor haar betekent koken op het festival meer dan alleen eten verkopen. “Quote”, vertelt ze. Bezoekers reageren enthousiast op de gerechten en de verhalen die daarbij horen "Het is echt heel erg lekker, de kip is zo lekker gekruid", vertelt een van de jonge bezoekers. De volledige opbrengst die Salma tijdens het festival verdient, gaat naar haar broers en zussen in Gaza. Ondanks de drukte is de sfeer ontspannen. Overal zitten mensen te genieten van lekkere gerechten met muziek op de achtergrond. Hoewel de schade bij de plofkraak op de Ceintuurbaan vannacht flink was, beseffen winkeliers en omwonenden zich ook dat het nog veel erger had kunnen aflopen. In de straat lag namelijk nog een explosief dat niet is afgegaan. Wel is de eigenaar van een dierenwinkel nog op zoek naar zijn twee katten die waarschijnlijk gevlucht zijn door de knal. Om 4.18 uur was er zeker één luide explosie te horen in en rond de straat. Een geldautomaat bij een boekenwinkel bleek getroffen te zijn door een plofkraak. Buurtbewoners laten vanochtend weten dat ze enorm schrokken: een van hen zei zelfs hartkloppingen te hebben gekregen en een ander stond te trillen op haar benen. Agenten troffen na die explosie nog een explosief aan dat was niet was afgegaan. In de buurt gaat het verhaal dat de plofkrakers na de eerste explosie werden gestoord, mogelijk door een voorbijrijdende ambulance. Dit explosief is door de Explosieven Opruimingdienst van defensie (EOD) meegenomen en op een veilige plek, waarschijnlijk het Westelijk Havengebied, tot ontploffing gebracht. Voordeur kapot "Daar ben ik ontzettend blij mee, want anders had ik echt deze winkel niet meer gehad", reageert een bloemist. Toch heeft zij nu al schade: in de ruit zit een enorme barst en ook het glas in de voordeur is gebarsten. Bovendien kan de voordeur niet meer dicht. Een dierenwinkel verderop heeft geen schade, maar wel een probleem: de twee katten van de eigenaar zijn van de schrik gevlucht en waren vanochtend nog niet terecht. "Dus dat is ook nog een dingetje", zegt de eigenaar, die vanochtend bij buren informeert of zij zijn katten hebben gezien. "Ik vind dat de mensen, als ze gepakt worden, echt flink bestraft moeten worden" Buurtbewoner Dit was de zevende plofkraak in de stad dit jaar. Anderhalve maand geleden was het raak bij een hotel een halve kilometer verderop, op de Amsteldijk. "Ik vind het echt een gigantische ergernis die plofkraken", zegt een buurtbewoner. "En ik vind dat de daders, als ze gepakt worden, echt flink bestraft moeten worden. Want ze brengen de mensen in gevaar van de mensen die boven die zaken wonen." Voor de plofkraak van vannacht is nog niemand opgepakt. Volgens de politie ging het om zeker twee daders, die daarna zijn gevlucht op een scooter. Dictionaries, textbooks, and encyclopedias routinely write in grave and solemn tones about the “industrial revolution” that reportedly “transformed” society, first in Britain and then in the rest of the globe, giving painful birth to the modern world. Everything from mystical poems to demographic statistics have been martialed to support the idea of a catastrophic upheaval and that disrupted what agrarian, medieval life of the countryside. However, nobody can quite agree on exactly when this revolution took place, and the people supposedly living in the midst of it, in Britain in the 1700s and early 1800s, never noticed that it was happening. In this first lecture, we trace the origins of the concept of the “industrial revolution” in political debates in Restoration-era France and in the philosophical ferment of the German radical press—all before the concept finally made its way back into the country where the great upheaval alegedly took place. Although largely forgotten today, the Jewish Labor Bund was once a powerful secular, socialist revolutionary party that fought for freedom and dignity for Jews in Europe. The movement formed in the waning days of the Russian Empire in an atmosphere of intense antisemitism, but it "rejected, from the very start, calls to create a Jewish ethnostate in Palestine," Crabapple says. "They felt that Zionism was a capitulation to the same bigots that wanted to kick Jews out of Europe." Bund members — known as Bundists — navigated profound historical changes from the founding of the movement in 1897 until its ultimate destruction in the Holocaust. But Crabapple, who learned Yiddish for the book, says the Bund is not just Jewish history. "This is a history that belongs to all rebels. It belongs to everyone who believes in the necessity of human solidarity," she says. It is the first U.S. state visit to China since 2017, during Trump's first administration. Trade, the Iran war, artificial intelligence and the fate of Taiwan are some of the issues being discussed, although it's not clear if any new agreements are likely. Trump traveled to China with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, along with a delegation of top U.S. executives including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Elon Musk of Tesla and Jensen Huang of Nvidia. The summit comes after years of rising hostility between the two superpowers, but leaders recognize the importance of improving the bilateral relationship, says Zhao Hai, director of international political studies at the Institute of World Economics and Politics in Beijing. "This is a very critical historical moment [at] a crossroad, and both sides now are working together to establish a stable relationship that will have a global ramification," he says. We also speak with Jake Werner, a historian of modern China and director of the East Asia Program at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He says the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran and the resulting economic chaos have strengthened China's position. "China has ties to all the countries in the region. It has acted in the past to help broker the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran," says Werner. "So it has some experience in this realm, sort of acting as a broker towards peace." Het gebruik van de volmachtstem, dat iemand anders jouw stem uitbrengt, ligt na de afgelopen gemeenteraadsverkiezingen onder de loep vanwege fraudegevoeligheid. Uit onderzoek van AT5 blijkt dat het gebruik van volmachtstemmen vooral in stadsdelen voorkomt waar de opkomst het laagst is. Wat zou er gebeuren als de regels strenger worden? "Dan wordt de gemeenteraad een nog slechtere afspiegeling van de stad." Al bijna een eeuw lang kan er in Nederland per volmacht worden gestemd. Handig voor als je op de verkiezingsdag niet kan stemmen vanwege bijvoorbeeld ziekte of vakantie. De regels daarvoor waren destijds nog vrij streng. Zo moest je de machtiging motiveren en ook moest je aanvankelijk al voor 1 januari van het verkiezingsjaar iemand anders machtigen. In de loop van de jaren werden de regels verruimd. Een motivering is niet meer nodig en ook hoef je niet voor de start van het verkiezingsjaar iemand op te geven. Een handtekening en de foto of kopie van je identificatie is genoeg. De persoon die jij gemachtigd hebt, mag dan jouw stem uitbrengen in het stemhokje. Onder de loep Maar na een incident tijdens de afgelopen gemeenteraadsverkiezingen in het Zuid-Hollandse Gorinchem kwam de manier van stemmen in opspraak. In het dorp werden onder meer volmachten geronseld en werden kiezers beïnvloed. "Dat de volmacht fraudegevoelig is, is absoluut een feit" Floris Vermeulen - politicoloog UvA De Europese verkiezingswaakhond OVSE uitte al meerdere keren kritiek op het volmachtgebruik in Nederland en na de afgelopen verkiezingen zijn er meerdere experts die de volmacht een 'zwakte' noemen. Dat het gebruik van volmachten onder de loep ligt, begrijpt politicoloog Floris Vermeulen van de UvA wel. "Je mag niet iemand actief benaderen voor zijn stempas. Je moet wachten totdat iemand je die stempas geeft. Dat is alleen een ontzettend grijs gebied. De overheid is er namelijk niet bij als de stempas wordt gegeven, daar is geen zicht op. Dus dat het fraudegevoelig is, is absoluut een feit." 148 stembureaus Zowel landelijk als in Amsterdam ligt het percentage voor het gebruik van volmachtstemmen rond de 10 procent tijdens een verkiezing. In een aanzienlijk deel van de stembureaus in de stad ligt dat gebruik wel boven dat gemiddelde. Bij 147 stembureaus, van de 461 die de stad telt, werd er vaker een volmacht gebruikt dan gemiddeld gezien. Zoom je in op de vijftig stembureaus waar het vaakst een volmacht werd gebruikt, dan valt op dat die vijftig stemlocaties voornamelijk te vinden zijn in Nieuw-West, Noord en Zuidoost. Met respectievelijk 28, 9 en 7 locaties. Tevens de drie stadsdelen met de laagste opkomstcijfers.
