Rutgers University in New Jersey has abruptly withdrawn its invitation to a prominent biotech entrepreneur and alum to speak at its engineering school convocation. Rami Elghandour, a 2001 alum of the engineering school, had been scheduled to deliver a graduation address at Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus May 15th, but his invitation was canceled over what the university said were complaints about his social media posts on Israel-Palestine. Two unions of educators at Rutgers University issued a joint statement condemning the university’s decision to cancel the speech, calling it politically motivated suppression that, “reflects a broader pattern of universities applying a Palestine exception to their stated commitments to free speech." Elghandour is also executive producer of the Gaza-set documentaries "The Voice of Hind Rajab" and "American Doctor."

Ook hield het programma zich meerdere keren niet aan de journalistieke code, met richtlijnen als waarheidsvinding, hoor en wederhoor, respect voor privacy en het scheiden van feiten en meningen. Daarnaast is het rapport kritisch over de publieke omroep in zijn geheel. Zo zouden er ‘te veel kapiteins […] hun eigen koers varen’. De evaluatiecommissie adviseert een eenvoudigere structuur, met minder managementlagen en duidelijke bevoegdheden. Wel moet er ruimte blijven voor verschillende perspectieven.

Het zat er al een tijdje aan te komen, maar nu is het zover: fatbikes mogen niet meer het Vondelpark in. Bij de ingangen staan handhavers - uitgerust met schuifmaat - om de fatbikers te weren. Nu krijgen ze nog een waarschuwing, maar over twee weken worden de eerste boetes uitgedeeld. De fatbikegebruikers die wij tegenkomen nemen zonder gemor een omweg. "We zien dat het goed gaat", vertelt verkeerswethouder Melanie van der Horst (D66), die vanochtend poolshoogte kwam nemen. "Ik ben blij dat het verbod is ingegaan." Fatbikers die het park in willen gaan worden eerst tegengehouden door zogenoemde fietscoaches, die de nieuwe regels uitleggen. Zo mag je nog wel met de fatbike aan de hand wandelen, maar is opstappen en fietsen verboden. Achter de fietscoaches staan ook handhavers om fietsers tegen te houden. Zij zijn straks ook bevoegd om boetes uit te delen. Meten met schuifmaatjes Ferry Vervuurt is aanvoerder van de handhavers in het Vondelpark en deelt de schuifmaatjes uit aan zijn collega's om de banden op te meten. Hij benadrukt dat de komende twee weken belangrijk zijn om iedereen te informeren. "Daarna worden pas de boetes uitgedeeld." Vaste wandelaars in het Vondelpark zijn blij met het verbod. "Het is heel goed", vertelt een man die naast het park woont en er al jaren elke dag een rondje loopt. "Ze rijden soms zo hard dat je niet eens met je rollator durft te lopen." Als het fatbikeverbod volgens het stadsbestuur een succes blijkt te zijn, dan wordt het mogelijk uitgebreid naar andere plekken in de stad. De meeste stadsgidsen van Amsterdam sturen je langs de Dam, het Rijksmuseum of het Anne Frank Huis. Maar er is nu een nieuwe únieke stadsgids die je kennis laat maken met een andere kant van de stad. Onderzoekers schreven een gids over moslimerfgoed, een volgens vaak onderbelicht deel van de Amsterdamse geschiedenis.  Warda El-Kaddouri en Mirjam Shatanawi schreven samen met andere onderzoekers een stadsgids over moslimerfgoed in Amsterdam, die een volgens hen vaak onderbelicht deel van de Amsterdamse geschiedenis in kaart brengt. Aan de hand van wandelroutes, persoonlijke verhalen en bijzondere locaties laat de gids zien hoe moslimgemeenschappen al decennialang onderdeel zijn van het sociale, culturele en religieuze leven van de stad. Invloed van moslims in de stad "Ik vind het heel belangrijk dat zichtbaar wordt waar de invloed van moslims te vinden is en dat er heel veel sporen zijn op plekken waar je het niet verwacht. En dat er heel veel plekken zijn waar je kan zien dat hier moslims gewoond, gewerkt hebben en dat dat eigenlijk door de hele stad is", vertelt Mirjam Shatanawi bij een van de plekken uit de gids.  Het is een gevelsteen met de tekst 'De Turksche Keizerspoort' verwijzend naar het pand dat ten tijde van het Ottomaanse Rijk werd gebruikt als pakhuis voor goederen als wol, zijde, leer en koffie.  Met het project willen de auteurs niet alleen historische kennis toegankelijk maken, maar ook bijdragen aan een breder beeld van de stad en haar inwoners. En waar je zo voorbij de gevelsteen zou lopen, is dat niet het geval bij de Fatih Moskee op de Rozengracht. "Wat ik zo mooi vind, is dat het echt een gedeelde geschiedenis laat zien. Een katholieke kerk die uiteindelijk een moskee is geworden", vertelt Warda El-Kaddouri. Het gebouw werd eerste gebruikt als kerk, daarna als stoffenwinkel en werd gekraakt. The film uses footage and vintage photographs to chronicle the history of Ellis Island, which at the time had fallen into disuse and decay. The film describes Ellis Island's various names and roles over time. Initially known as the "Island of Gold" and "Oyster Island," it became a key immigration gateway to the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, welcoming millions of immigrants from Europe. During this period, Ellis Island was a place of quick medical exams and inspections, with the door to America wide open. However, after World War I, stricter immigration laws transformed the island into a place of intense scrutiny, and immigrants faced formal questioning and medical inspections. Despite overcrowded, unsanitary conditions, the hardships were a result of managing vast numbers of people, not neglect. In the 1960s, the remnants of the immigrant processing center at Ellis Island were threatened with destruction; but then in 1965 the island was declared a National Historic Shrine and it became home to an immigration museum. Ellis Island served as the nation's premier federal immigration station, processing over 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. The immigration station closed in 1954 and was largely abandoned for several years. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Het evenement Music On Festival zou zaterdag 9 en zondag 10 mei plaatsvinden in het Meerpark, maar werd op het laatste moment stilgelegd. Hoe heeft het zover kunnen komen? Stadsdeel Oost geeft inmiddels meer duidelijkheid over de afgelasting. REACTIE De reden waarom het festival uiteindelijk niet door kon gaan, is dat er een andere tent zou worden geplaatst dan waarvoor eerder toestemming was aangevraagd. Volgens een woordvoerder van de Omgevingsdienst wist de organisatie al sinds februari dat voor deze tent was gekozen. De organisatie laat weten dat ze halverwege maart de aanvraag voor deze nieuwe tent hebben ingeleverd. Voor evenementen met meer dan 2.000 bezoekers moet minimaal zestien weken van tevoren een vergunning worden aangevraagd. Omdat Music On meer dan 20.000 bezoekers trekt, geldt die verplichting ook voor dit festival.  Halverwege maart tot afgelopen weekend is geen zestien weken, maar wel ruim van tevoren. Waarom er dan toch pas op het laatste moment een beslissing genomen moest worden is volgens stadsdeel Oost omdat: "Op 17 maart, heeft de organisatie een verzoek ingediend doorgevoerd voor een andere tent. Deze aanpassing is dus sindsdien bekend bij de gemeente. Zoals gebruikelijk is deze wijziging doorgestuurd naar de omgevingsdienst ter advies. Dit was eind maart. Op 5 mei heeft de omgevingsdienst negatief advies gemaild naar de gemeente", laat woordvoerder van stadsdeel Oost, Maartje Bakker weten.  Waarom er niet al eerder naar dit verzoek is gekeken door de omgevingsdienst en dus ook eerder gecommuniceerd had kunnen worden naar de gemeente wordt nu onderzocht aldus de omgevingsdienst.  Volgens het stadsdeel is het een normale gang van zaken dat de omgevingsdienst een paar dagen voorafgaand aan een festival de locatie  Volgens stadsdeel Oost beoordeelt de Omgevingsdienst de situatie op basis van de ingediende stukken. Bouwinspecteurs controleren op locatie uitsluitend vanuit bouwtechnisch perspectief. Daarbij vindt standaard enkele dagen voor aanvang van een evenement een schouw plaats om vast te stellen of de bouwwerken overeenkomen met de vergunningsaanvraag. Omdat organisatoren tenten en podia vaak pas één of twee dagen van tevoren opbouwen, vinden deze controles meestal kort voor het evenement plaats. Wanneer tenten eerder gereed zijn, kan in overleg met de organisator ook eerder worden gecontroleerd. In eerste instantie was er een vergunning aangevraagd voor een zogenoemde Sahara-tent. Deze vergunning was al aangevraagd in december vorig jaar. Daarover gaf de Omgevingsdienst een positief advies. Uiteindelijk koos de organisatie echter voor een andere tent, de reden zou zijn omdat de organisatie deze mooier vonden. Voor die nieuwe constructie kon geen positief advies worden afgegeven, omdat er onvoldoende informatie over beschikbaar was. Daardoor bleef alleen een negatief advies over. Door dat negatieve advies kon de gemeente geen garanties geven over de veiligheid van bezoekers. Hierna volgde op de ochtend van het festival zelf een kort geding. Organisator Loveland verloor deze en hierdoor viel definitief het doek voor het festival.  Organisator Loveland, die al dertig jaar evenementen organiseert in de stad, zegt boos en gefrustreerd te zijn over de gang van zaken. Het zat er al een tijdje aan te komen, maar nu is het zover: fatbikes mogen niet meer het Vondelpark in. Bij de ingangen staan handhavers - uitgerust met schuifmaat - om de fatbikers te weren. Nu krijgen ze nog een waarschuwing, maar over twee weken worden de eerste boetes uitgedeeld. De fatbikegebruikers die wij tegenkomen nemen zonder gemor een omweg.  "We zien dat het goed gaat", vertelt verkeerswethouder Melanie van der Horst (D66), die vanochtend poolshoogte kwam nemen. "Ik ben blij dat het verbod is ingegaan." Fatbikers die het park in willen gaan worden eerst tegengehouden door zogenoemde fietscoaches, die de nieuwe regels uitleggen.  Zo mag je nog wel met de fatbike aan de hand wandelen, maar is opstappen en fietsen verboden. Achter de fietscoaches staan ook handhavers om fietsers tegen te houden. Zij zijn straks ook bevoegd om boetes uit te delen.  Meten met schuifmaatjes Ferry Vervuurt is aanvoerder van de handhavers in het Vondelpark en deelt de schuifmaatjes uit aan zijn collega's om de banden op te meten. Hij benadrukt dat de komende twee weken belangrijk zijn om iedereen te informeren. "Daarna worden pas de boetes uitgedeeld." Vaste wandelaars in het Vondelpark zijn blij met het verbod. "Het is heel goed", vertelt een man die naast het park woont en er al jaren elke dag een rondje loopt. "Ze rijden soms zo hard dat je niet eens met je rollator durft te lopen." Als het fatbikeverbod volgens het stadsbestuur een succes blijkt te zijn, dan wordt het mogelijk uitgebreid naar andere plekken in de stad.
