Een eerste groep passagiers is van boord van het Nederlandse cruiseschip Hondius gegaan. De passagiers van de boot waar het hantavirus uitbrak, zijn nu op Tenerife. Samen met een deel van de bemanning vliegen zij terug naar hun thuisland.

Een voormalig woonzorgcentrum in Slotervaart stond afgelopen donderdag vol met brandweermensen en agenten. Binnen werd er geoefend met het blussen van een illegale rave.  Rond 19.30 uur ging de oefening van start. Binnen stond harde muziek aan en met onder meer rookmachines werd een brand nagebootst. Op de grond lagen figuranten met realistische nepverwondingen op hun lichaam. Agressieve man Agenten kwamen als eerst aan bij het leegstaande pand. Ze werden meteen geconfronteerd met een agressieve man. "Lekker wegwezen, oprotten", riep hij. Uiteindelijk werd hij opgepakt omdat hij niet mee wilde werken. Op de derde verdieping liep nog een tweede boze man. Een brandweerman uit Abcoude sprak van een realistische oefening. "Normaal oefenen we vaak met poppen en nu hadden we gewoon echte mensen. Die dan, nogmaals, onderdeel zijn van de brandweer of iets dergelijks. Met geënsceneerde wonden. Dat maakt het heel realistisch." De brandweer moest op meerdere verdiepingen alle ruimtes doorzoeken. "Dan is het erg complex", vertelde een andere brandweerman. "Maar gewoon proberen stap voor stap te kijken waar de brandhaard is. Want die moet natuurlijk ook uit." Taken verdelen De bedoeling van de oefening was ook om de samenwerking tussen de hulpdiensten te oefenen en de taken te verdelen als er meerdere dingen tegelijk misgaan. Zo had de boze man op de derde verdieping bijvoorbeeld de deur gebarricadeerd, waardoor agenten er een stormram bij moesten halen. De komende jaren zal het pand verbouwd worden tot een nieuw verzorgingscentrum. It was a video about something I later found out was called a Paillard clockwork fan, which allegedly is a 100% mechanical cooling fan. No batteries, cables or anything else. You give it a winding and allegedly it cools you for 30 minutes. But these fans are ancient, they are from the early 1900s, they’re more than 100 years old, so I decided to look for a modern equivalent of one…..and I found nothing. There is no modern equivalent. Nobody makes this nowadays. All we have are fans that are plugged into the electricity grid or battery-powered. The only manual fans we have need to be continuously squeezed to run and they’re small, weak and your and gets very tired after just a few minutes. And honestly this surprised me because there’s a market for this. Think about it, a lot of people want to live off-grid and electrical motors are very power hungry. There’s also a lot of people who live and/or work in hot remote areas where there’s no electricity. This would also be nice in a power outage because you also have your hands with you, and all you have to do is wind it up once in a while. So I decided to try and build one myself, and if successful, I will offer the files for free. Obviously the first step towards making this is understanding how it works. Fortunately, the original video does give us some useful clues. The first thing we can observe is the geartrain of the fan. The only purpose of which is to increase the output speed. The fan blades themselves are our output and we want it to spin fast enough so that I can move a substantial amount of air quickly in order to cool us down. The question is: what is inside the box below the gear train? Well, this is called a “clockwork fan”, we can hear and see winding and ratchething, and the short video mentioned a spring motor…and that tells me that inside this there must be a mainspring. And I know just the place where I can get one easily and for very little money. In a hardware store from any tape measure. When you think about it mainsprings are the first “battery”, before we learned how to chemically store electrical energy, we learned how to store kinetic or mechanical energy! Sometimes in 15th century Europe somebody came up with the mainspring. It allowed us to store more kinetic energy far more conveniently and in a much smaller space than a hanging weight which was previously the norm. Mainsprings revolutionized our lives because they gave us the ability to take timekeeping devices with us, they made pocket and wrist watches possible. But even mainsprings were kind of inconvenient all the way up to the 1960s. It took us centuries to figure out the right allows and heat-treating processes to create the kind of spring steel that gave mainsprings the kind of yield strength and fatigue life that today we take for granted. A mainspring can be wound and unwound almost an infinite amount of times without loosing it’s shape or breaking. It is very strong and very elastic at the same time. Before the 1960s, mainsprings were the main cause of watch repair simply because they didn’t last as long. Of course you can find mainspring outside of watches and clocks in everything from toys to retractable dog leashes, egg timers and more. Something I did on my model/prototype is that I decreased the gear module from bottom to top. The gear module is simply the tooth size of metric gears. Larger teeth are obviously stronger a nd as such have higher load bearing capacity but are also noisier and less smooth which makes them better suited to low rpm and high torque On the other hand smaller gear teeth obviously have a lower load bearing capacity but are smoother, quieter and more efficient at rpm which aligns perfectly with our application since our torque decreases and speed increases as we go up in the gear train. I have also changed the pressure angle for the last gear pair which will operate at the highest rpm. A 14.5 degree pressure angle is smoother, quieter and overall better suited and more efficient at high rpm. It has poor shock resistance and is easier to strip with high torque, but we won’t really have any shocks or high torque by the time the torque is transferred to the top of the gear train. Polen en Engeland hebben al een queermuseum, maar Amsterdam nog niet. Daar moet volgens initiatiefnemer Jasper Kuipers verandering in komen. "Alles wat belangrijk is, hangt in een museum." Waarom is er nog geen queermuseum in Amsterdam? Het is de grote vraag van Jasper Kuipers, bestuurslid van Stichting Queer Museum. Achter de schermen werkt hij al twee jaar aan de opening, maar eerst is er draagvlak en geld nodig.  "Ongelofelijk dat Amsterdam nog geen queer museum heeft", zegt Kuipers in de Reguliersdwarsstraat. "Het verbaast me eigenlijk. Als ik naar andere steden kijk zoals Warschau, waar het niet makkelijk is, dat het daar wel lukt en hier niet." De stichting heeft al flinke stappen gezet. Zo zijn er gesprekken met verschillende betrokken personen, vooral om te horen wat er leeft binnen de gemeenschap. In juli opent er in de Nieuwe Kerk ook een eerste tentoonstelling: Queer Amsterdam, de Roze Stad, curator van de tentoonstelling is Hélène Webers.  Café 't Mandje Een van die betrokken personen is Henk de Vries, organisator van de Gay Tours. "Het is bijna schandalig dat er geen queer museum in Amsterdam is, zeker met onze geschiedenis en dan heb ik het niet alleen over dat Amsterdam ooit Gay Capital was." Hij pleit met name voor een vermelding van Café 't Mandje. "Voor mij is dit heilige grond", zegt hij terwijl hij naar binnen kijkt. "Al die mannen en vrouwen die zochten naar liefde en vertier, die vonden dat hier. En dat 70 jaar lang, waarin dat in Nederland niet kon." De Vries hoopt dat het museum een plek kan worden waar verschillende groepen binnen de queer community elkaar kunnen ontmoeten. Dat is belangrijk, vindt De Vries, omdat de gesprekken over bijvoorbeeld de organisatie van Pride, vaak stroef verliepen. "Dit museum moet een brug worden."  De stichting is hard bezig om steun te krijgen van de gemeente en fondsen te werken. Housefestival Music On gaat definitief niet door. Het festival in de Watergraafsmeer werd vanochtend op de valreep afgelast nadat de gemeente de vergunning voor de grote tent die op het terrein staat had ingetrokken. De rechter gaat dat besluit niet terugdraaien, zo hoorde de organisatie vanmiddag in een kort geding dat ze zelf hadden aangespannen. Het festival werd vandaag een uur voordat het zou beginnen afgelast. Dat gebeurde nadat de gemeente de vergunning voor de tent die op het terrein staat had ingetrokken, omdat de omgevingsdienst een negatief advies had afgegeven over de constructie. In de oorspronkelijke plannen zou er op dezelfde plek een andere tent komen, maar later week de organisatie van die plannen of door deze tent te kiezen. Volgens de Omgevingsdienst heeft de organisatie bepaalde informatie over de tent niet aangeleverd, waardoor ze geen goed oordeel konden geven over de veiligheid van de constructie. De organisatie kreeg vanochtend om 10.00 uur te horen dat de vergunning was ingetrokken. Om 12.00 uur zou het festival beginnen. De organisatie spande direct een kort geding aan tegen het besluit van de gemeente. Vanmiddag om 14.00 begon de zitting, die via teams werd georganiseerd. "Dit is de doodsteek voor ons", zei een withete Marnix Bal, de organisator van het festival, die ook achter Loveland zit. "Ik heb dit in dertig jaar nog nooit meegemaakt. Nooit, nooit, nooit. In dertig jaar Loveland hebben we nog nooit iets verkeerds gebouwd. Na dertig jaar goede dienst kan ik dit niet volgen." De rechter die vandaag uitspraak moest doen, zegt dat ze voor nu alleen kijken naar het besluit van de burgemeester. Een enorme rookwolk, meerdere NL-Alerts en veel stankoverlast. Het waren de gevolgen van een grote brand op een vrachtschip in het Westelijk Havengebied een jaar geleden. Hoe verliep het blussen en waarom duurde dat zo lang? Ongeveer een jaar later blikken de brandweer en Port of Amsterdam hierop terug.  Zoals altijd bij branden in het Westelijke Havengebied waren brandweermensen van de Gezamenlijke Brandweer Amsterdam, die een kazerne in het gebied zelf heeft, als eerst ter plaatse. Bevelvoerder Jeroen zat bij de eerste ploeg. "Het was pittig", vertelt hij. De brandweer had verschillende uitdagingen. Het grootste probleem was dat het niet duidelijk is waar de brandhaard zat. "We kregen op elke plek weer een andere hotspot te zien met onze warmtebeeldcamera", zegt de bevelvoerder. "Hij zat door het hele ruim." Droneteam In het schip lag schroot. Het was de bedoeling dat een kraan van het bedrijf waar het schip aangemeerd lag het schroot dat het hardst brandde eruit zou halen. Om te zien waar dat schroot zich wel bevond, kwam er een droneteam uit Rotterdam. De drone was ook uitgerust met een warmtebeeldcamera, die beter zicht had. "De kraanmachinist moest zo snel mogelijk bij die hotspot proberen te komen", zegt Raymond Pikee, teamleider bij de Gezamenlijke Brandweer Amsterdam. "Want als die weg is, wordt de rest van het metaal natuurlijk ook niet aangestraald. Dus als hij weet waar hij moet grijpen, ja, dat is kostbare tijd." Wat is de Gezamenlijke Brandweer Amsterdam? De Gezamenlijke Brandweer Amsterdam, kortweg GBA, is een samenwerking tussen de Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam Amstelland, Port of Amsterdam en bedrijven in het Westelijk Havengebied die lid zijn geworden. De kazerne staat aan de Galwin, midden in het Westelijk Havengebied. Hierdoor zijn de brandweermensen vaak in zes of zeven minuten ter plaatse.  Bedrijven betalen contributie om lid te zijn. Ze kunnen zelf kiezen of ze wel of geen lid worden. "Inmiddels hebben we er al 46 in het Westelijk Havengebied, dus dat is vrij fors", vertelt Pikee. De GBA komt langs bij leden om daar met medewerkers te oefenen en hen te trainen. "Je leert elkaar kennen. Je leert ook het hart van het bedrijf kennen en dat is wel vrij belangrijk tijdens een incident." De GBA telt drie brandweerwagens. Het gaat om een wagen voor reddingen op hoogte, een tankautospuit met een zogeheten cobra cutter en een industrieel blusvoertuig. Die laatste wagen kan 8.000 liter water per minuut spuiten, op 120 meter afstand. Ook is er daar 4000 liter schuimvormend middel aan bord, wat nodig is bij tankbranden.  Bij grote industriebranden wordt er uiteraard snel verder opgeschaald, maar volgens Pikee weet de GBA juist vaak te voorkomen dat beginnende branden zo groot worden. Vanaf het water werd door brandweerblusboot Jan van der Heijden en twee patrouilleboten van Port of Amsterdam geblust. "We kregen door middel van dronebeelden en informatie van de wal te horen in welk ruim we het water moesten gooien", vertelt Tobias, schipper van de brandweerblusboot. "Persoonlijk was het best wel intens", zegt havenbeambte Kelvin van Port of Amsterdam, die acht uur lang bij het vrachtschip lag om te blussen. "Wij hebben hele grote motoren onder ons staan die eigenlijk continu vol aan het draaien was. Dat geeft gewoon een hoop herrie in de stuurhut. Je kon je oordoppen niet in doen, want je hebt communicatie in de stuurhut via de C2000 met de brandweer. Die moet je ook gewoon goed horen." Schip blijft drijven De brandweer probeerde ook te voorkomen dat het schip zou zinken door het vele bluswater, of doordat het schip uit balans zou raken omdat er teveel schroot op bepaalde plekken weggehaald was. Het vrachtschip bleef uiteindelijk drijven en werd in de avond van de volgende dag geblust. "Als dan blijkt dat de brandhaard veel dieper zit en het bedrijf is heel lang bezig om het leeg te halen... dan hebben wij alles gedaan op dat moment wat we konden", zegt bevelvoerder Jeroen. "En dat geeft mij wel weer een goed gevoel." Schipper Tobias: "Dit is wel de reden dat ik vrijwilliger ben op de boot.
