“The Ghost Variations,” Robert Schumann’s last work, are often heard as a musical representation of the auditory hallucinations he was experiencing at the time of its composition. The final variation is so dense with chromatic neighbor tones across a broken chorale texture that it’s possible to pronounce the entire theme in D major in the right hand amid a faint backdrop of E-flat major. Halloween, oftewel trick or treat. Bij deze vooral Amerikaanse traditie gaan kinderen verkleed langs de deuren om snoep op te halen. En dat is precies wat de Amerikaanse Jacky miste in Amsterdam. Daarom organiseert ze inmiddels al zes jaar haar eigen trick or treat-feest. Jacky, bewoner van de Rivierenbuurt, is zelf opgegroeid in Amerika, waar Halloween een grote rol speelde in haar jeugd. Omdat ze deze traditie zo leuk vond, wilde ze niet dat haar eigen kinderen dit moesten missen. Daarom besloot ze het zelf te organiseren. Wat heel klein begon, is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een groot evenement waar ruim 1200 kinderen aan meedoen. Om mee te kunnen doen, moeten zowel de kinderen die langs de deuren willen als de bewoners die snoep willen uitdelen zich aanmelden. Zo weet iedereen welke huizen meedoen en waar de kinderen terechtkunnen. Sint-Maarten Kinderen die langs de deuren gaan voor snoep, dat lijkt natuurlijk heel erg op Sint-Maarten. Dreigt deze Nederlandse traditie niet een beetje te worden overschaduwd door de groeiende populariteit van Halloween?  Volgens Jacky valt dat wel mee. Ze vindt dat het twee heel verschillende tradities zijn die prima naast elkaar kunnen bestaan. Sint-Maarten vindt ze juist heel lief en gezellig, terwijl Halloween meer draait om eng en griezelig. Was it a mistake to see spacetime as revealing the ultimate nature of reality, and where might we look for an alternative? Should we treat spacetime as a powerful framework, but one that is incapable of providing a final account of the world? Om dat te voorkomen probeert het familiebedrijf Gassan de jonge generatie warm te maken voor het klassieke ambacht. "Diamanten zijn net mensen, je moet ze allemaal anders benaderen." Raymond Vorm (41) werkte jarenlang als stratenmaker en was het werken in weer en wind zat. Een familielid wees hem op de vacature voor leerling diamantslijper. Hij was meteen verkocht. "Het is een prachtig, complex én technisch vak", vertelt hij enthousiast. Geconcentreerd kijkt hij na elke seconde slijpen naar het resultaat door een loep. "Het vraagt veel geduld, het slijpen van een diamant kan dagen duren." In Nederland zijn nog maar 30 ervaren diamantslijpers werkzaam. Dat was vroeger wel anders. In de hal waar Vorm met vier medeleerlingen onder toeziend oog van zijn leermeester Pieter Ouwerkerk (57) een diamant slijpt, zat vroeger de hele ruimte bomvol met ambachtslieden. Nieuwe leerlingen nodig Ouwerkerk: "Het beroep is minder bekend dan vroeger, toen ik begon. En er is heel veel massaproductie in China en India. Ben Laude performs George Crumb's "Dream Images (Love-Death Music)" from Makrokosmos, Volume I American composer George Crumb (1929-2022) composed the first volume of "Makrokosmos" in 1972 for his friend David Burge. The work, subtitled "12 Fantasy-Pieces after the Zodiac for Amplified Piano," is known for its extended techniques and artfully notated score. Crumb identified his "spiritual impulse" in composing the music as akin to "the darker side of Chopin." The eleventh piece, "Dream Images (Love-Death Music)," occupying the Gemini position in Crumb's zodiacal scheme, follows an eerie, recurring whisper of a half-remembered theme out of which the central subject of Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu fades in and out of the music's consciousness. (Crumb had originally intended to quote the 18th variation from Rachmaninoff’s ‘Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,’ but replaced it with the Chopin passage in the final version due to copyright considerations.) Crumb writes of his fascination with "the 'magical properties' of music" when composing Makrokosmos, among other "recurrent haunting images" such as "the problem of the origin of evil," "the 'timelessness' of time, "the haunting words of Pascal: 'The eternal silence of infinite space terrifies me'," and "these few lines of Rilke: 'And in the nights the heavy earth is falling from all the stars down into loneliness.
