Europe is being told that its future depends on more weapons, bigger military budgets, permanent mobilisation, and deeper dependence on NATO. From Brussels to Berlin, “security” is being rewritten to mean rearmament, while social security, climate security, housing, healthcare, democracy, and peace are pushed aside as luxuries we can no longer afford. But whose security is actually being protected? In this public DiEM25 panel, Julijana Zita, member of DiEM25’s Coordinating Collective, is joined by Paweł Mościcki, Polish philosopher, writer and essayist; Michalis Kritharidis of MeRA25 Greece; Jan Bělíček, editor-in-chief of Deník Alarm; and Adam Hruška of Volt Czechia to confront Europe’s accelerating militarisation and ask whether our continent’s future can, and must, move beyond NATO. Together, they discuss what genuine security could mean in a Europe trapped between imperial power blocs, war economies, arms industry profits, authoritarian drift, and political elites who treat peace as weakness. Can the left speak credibly about safety without surrendering to the language of generals and defence contractors? Buildings generally aren’t designed for people with disabilities—and when your own home poses daily physical barriers, it can be incredibly frustrating. But smart home technology can offer surprisingly simple, life-changing solutions for people with disabilities, those aging in place, or anyone with temporary mobility issues. This week, Wirecutter accessibility editor Claire Perlman and smart home editor Jon Chase join us to discuss a recent project where they retrofitted Claire's apartment with smart light switches. Because Claire uses a wheelchair and has limited arm mobility, her apartment's light switches were too high for her to easily turn on, leaving her in the dark if a helper wasn't around. Jon and Claire share how they solved this issue using switches that allow Claire to control her overhead lighting using just her voice. They also break down the learning curve of setting up smart home devices, the frustrating realities of Wi-Fi pairing, and the best devices to start with if you want to make your home more accessible. This episode covers: • The limitations of standard ADA compliance: An "ADA compliant" apartment is designed to meet a wide range of needs, which may not work for every disability. • Smart switches vs. smart bulbs: If you want to automate built-in overhead lighting, you don't need to replace your bulbs. Instead, you can replace the physical wall switch with a smart switch that wires directly into your existing setup and can be controlled via an app or a voice assistant like Alexa. • The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi pairing trick: If you are struggling to get a new smart device to connect to your phone during setup, it's likely because your phone is on a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network while most smart devices use a 2.4 GHz network. You can often fix this by temporarily disabling the 5 GHz band on your router until the setup is complete. • The best smart devices for accessibility: You don't have to automate your entire home at once. Het is vijf jaar geleden dat Peter R. de Vries werd neergeschoten in de Lange Leidsedwarsstraat. Na een uitzending van RTL Boulevard werd hij onder vuur genomen, anderhalve week later overleed hij. Peter Schouten stond samen met De Vries de kroongetuige bij en kreeg het nieuws via-via al snel te horen. Met hem blikken we terug op die dag.  "Dat is een heel heftig moment, veel heftiger kun je je eigenlijk niet voorstellen", blikt Peter Schouten terug op het moment dat hij hoorde hoe zijn vriend en collega Peter R. de Vries in de Lange Leidsedwarsstraat lag. Vlak daarvoor werd hij op klaarlichte dag onder vuur genomen vanuit zijn rug.  Marengo Schouten vormde op dat moment, samen met de Vries en Onno de Jong, de verdediging van de kroongetuige in het Marengo-proces. Het proces waarin Ridouan Taghi terechtstaat voor betrokkenheid bij zes moorden en vier pogingen daartoe.  De afgelopen vijf jaar zijn geen hel geweest, omdat je op een gegeven moment kracht put uit wat iemand voor jou, Nederland en de wereld betekende. Je gaat je allerlei dingen herinneren waardoor Peter eigenlijk blijft leven.  Ook Royce de Vries staat vandaag stil bij de dood van zijn vader. Op Instagram schrijft hij dat hij zich vooral vast wil houden aan de mooie herinneringen, zijn humor en zijn liefde.  En ook Peter Schouten zegt: "Wat je natuurlijk het meest mist is de persoonlijke relatie en het kameraadschap dat je met elkaar had. Dat is natuurlijk gewoon datgene wat je het hardste treft." Schouten voert nog steeds de verdediging van kroongetuige Nabil B. in het Marengoproces. Dat proces loopt nu in hoger beroep.
