Aerial photos reveal that bulldozers caused extensive damage to a 280-by-50-foot etching in the desert sand known as an intaglio, which holds special significance for the Hia-Ced O’odham people. Lorraine Marquez Eiler, co-founder of the International Sonoran Desert Alliance and an elder of the Hia-Ced O’odham, says locals informed both the work crews and Border Patrol officials about the significance of the intaglio. “On Thursday, late afternoon, they were still talking about how to protect the area and went home feeling that they were still working together. Earlier this year, more than 70,000 people were being detained by ICE in jails across the country. These maritime workers are often working-class men from developing countries across the Global South who form the crews on about 1,500 oil tankers, cargo ships and other vessels currently stuck on the water. Unpaid for several weeks, they lack the visas to disembark in any of the Gulf countries near the ships. “There is lack of food, there is lack of provisions, there is lack of water,” says Mohamed Arrachedi of the International Transport Workers’ Federation, joining us from Bilbao, Spain. “The seafarers are just exposed and absolutely vulnerable.” We also speak with Manoj Yadav, general secretary of Forward Seamen’s Union of India, who says the mental health of the workers is rapidly deteriorating as many have also lost connection to their families. “They are trained for serving on board merchant vessels. En we hebben een eerste raadslid dat de werkdruk benoemt: terecht en moet het raadslidmaatschap fulltime worden, of is het gewoon even wennen aan een nieuwe baan? Café 't Sluisje aan de Nieuwendammerdijk in Noord moet de twee geliefde buurttafels voor de kroeg weghalen. De gemeente nam de vergunning van de kroeg onder de loep na een klacht. Volgens de uitbater komt de klacht bij een weggestuurde bezoeker vandaan. "Hier stond een hele lange picknicktafel en daar staat nu niks meer en daar mag ook niks meer staan", vertelt uitbater Maaike van Zomeren, nog altijd vol ongeloof. "Dit zijn gewoon de twee leukste tafels en de gezelligste tafels. En dat is gewoon zonde." De tafels staan er volgens haar al 30 jaar, maar na een klacht nam de gemeente de vergunning onder de loep. Die concludeerde dat de twee stamtafels, pal voor de deur, buiten het vergunde terras vallen. Het café zegt zeker te weten dat de klacht bij een bezoeker vandaan komt, die vorig jaar werd weggestuurd toen ze met een eigen thermoskan op het terras zat. AT5 heeft voor die aantijging geen bewijs gezien. De bezoeker zou een Woo-verzoek (Wet open overheid) hebben ingediend bij de gemeente om uit te zoeken of het terras geen openbare ruimte was. Uit het onderzoek dat volgde, bleek uiteindelijk dat het terras niet goed was ingetekend. Uit een nieuwe, herziene intekening blijkt dat de twee stamtafels er niet mogen staan. Een petitie om de buurttafels terug te krijgen is inmiddels al bijna 2000 keer ondertekend. Ook de buurtbewoners, die gezamenlijk de kroeg kocht om die van de ondergang te redden, laten het er niet bij zitten. "Het zijn de bankjes die het meest populair zijn bij de stamgasten. Het langst in de zon, het mooiste uitzicht", vertelt Jeroen Kleijne, voorzitter van de coöperatie achter de kroeg. "Dit is Amsterdam op zijn smalst", vult bestuurslid Maarten Middelburg aan. De gemeente laat in een reactie weten achter de schermen na te denken over oplossingen. "In de tussentijd heeft ’t Sluisje nog steeds een terras van meer dan 250 vierkante meter waar mensen kunnen zitten." Onderzoek naar de inmiddels beruchte GVB-tapes heeft geen nieuw bewijs opgeleverd voor de eventuele vervolging van Maccabi-supporters. Dat zegt het Openbaar Ministerie tegen AT5. De opnames zijn onderzocht nadat het GVB eerst stelde dat ze waren gewist bij het vervangen van de systemen. Sara deed in november 2024 aangifte nadat ze mishandeld en bespuugd zou zijn door Israëlische fans. Maar zonder nieuw bewijs lijkt het onderzoek daarnaar te stranden. "Er waren zoveel agenten, zoveel camera's en er geen enkel bewijs. Dat vind ik gewoon heel erg opvallend", vertelt Sara (echte naam bekend bij redactie) anderhalf jaar na haar aangifte tegen fans van Maccabi Tel Aviv. In november 2024 werd ze naar eigen zeggen mishandeld en bespuugd door de supporters. Dat gebeurde nadat ze zelf 'Free Palestine' naar de aanhang van de club riep. "Ik draaide me om. Ik werd bespuugd door een jongen en door één iemand werd ik geraakt op mijn schouder. Toen dacht ik dat ik veilig was, maar toen kwamen er nog twee dames achter me aan en trokken aan mijn haar. Die heb ik weggeduwd en toen ben ik van het station weg gegaan", vertelt ze. Sara deed aangifte van de mishandeling en wacht maanden op een reactie van het Openbaar Ministerie. Waar ze in de aangifte nog met klem verzoekt de beelden van metrostations veilig te laten stellen, komt het GVB in juni met het nieuws dat de beelden zijn gewist bij het vervangen van de systemen. Maanden later komen ze daar weer op terug, de banden zouden nog in een beveiligde opslag hebben gelegen. In de tussentijd was het onderzoek naar de aangifte gestaakt door justitie. Toch onderzocht de politie de opgedoken beelden en komt nu met het nieuws dat er geen bewijs van een mishandeling op staat. "Bij het uitkijken van de beelden is gericht gezocht naar de door het slachtoffer naar voren gebrachte mishandeling en bespugen. Die feiten werden niet waargenomen. Vervolgens is door de politie contact opgenomen met de vrouw om een nadere beschrijving te krijgen hoe ze er destijds uitzag, maar dit leidde niet tot andere bevindingen." En daarmee komt het onderzoek in een impasse, zonder bewijs kan het Openbaar Ministerie niet vaststellen dat het is gebeurd. Adem Çatbas, de advocaat van Sara, vindt het ongelofelijk: "Iedereen die zich op metrostation Amsterdam Centraal begeeft ziet dat het daar wemelt van camera’s. Alles is daar zo goed mogelijk vastgelegd. Het kan niet zo zijn dat de beelden er niet zijn." "Ons doel is om uiteindelijk tot de vervolging komen van de daders Adem Çatbas - advocaat Om vervolging van de supporters alsnog af te dwingen, zijn Sara en haar advocaat een zogeheten artikel 12 procedure gestart. Kerala style Egg Curry Ingredients 12 eggs 2 red onions 2 tomatoes 1 small green chili 6 garlic cloves Thumbsized piece fresh ginger 3 tbsp coconut oil 1 tsp mustard seeds 10 curry leaves 2 tsp Kashmiri chilli powder 1½ tsp coriander powder ½ tsp garam masala ½ tsp turmeric ½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper Sea salt, to season 400ml coconut milk Juice of ½ lemon Fried curried leaves, to garnish Method Step 1: Prep the eggs Place the eggs in a large saucepan of cold water. Place over a high heat and bring to a boil, then cook for 6 minutes. Immediately plunge the eggs into iced water to stop them cooking. Peel the eggs. Heat the coconut oil in a large heavy based saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the eggs and cook, turning gently, until golden brown on all sides. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Step 2: Make the curry Finely slice the red onions, chop the tomatoes, finely slice the Thai chilli and finely grate the garlic and ginger. Place the saucepan back over medium heat and add the mustard seeds and curry leaves. Cook for 30 seconds to temper. Add the onions and saute for 10 minutes, until they turn golden brown. Stir in the chilli, garlic and ginger, and cook for 2 minutes. Add the Kashmiri chilli powder, coriander, garam masala, turmeric and black pepper. Cook for a further minute. Stir in the tomatoes and season with some salt. Cook for a further 5-6 minutes. Pour in the coconut milk and bring to a simmer. Return the eggs to the pan and cook, uncovered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Step 3: Finish and serve Stir in the lemon juice and season with salt. Serve the curry over steamed rice and garnish with some fried curry leaves. Recipe notes Recipe origins and authenticity: Known as Muta Kura, this egg curry originates from the southern region of India with local ingredients of curry leaves and coconut milk, form its rustic base. Some regional versions can be spicier than others, but this version has a balanced level of fire and tang. ‘Kerala’ is characterised by the use of coconut in the form of oil, milk and cream, combined with curry leaves, mustard seeds, chilli and spices from the region. Cook support: You can add some additional tang with tamarind towards the end of cooking, or some sweetness through jaggery or brown sugar. Sourcing: Thai green chillies are the smaller variety available at quality green grocers and have a more intense heat than the larger long green chillies. Substitutions: Coconut oil is the traditional cooking fat for this dish, but you can use ghee if you have that on hand instead. Storage: The curry base can be refrigerated for up to 3 days, if the eggs haven’t been added, then add fresh eggs to serve, or refrigerate for a day with the eggs, as they can become rubbery if stored for longer. Serving ideas: For some additional crunch you could add some toasted cashews or coconut flakes to serve, and stir through some spinach to wilt at the end.

It features renovations near the Co-Op apartments in the N.E. Bronx from 1968 through 1971. BQE; aka I-278, was designed by urban planner and political official, Robert Moses. Construction of the BQE began in 1937, requiring numerous expansions and renovations for years after involving significant engineering and construction efforts. A major challenge was the installation of an eight lane interstate highway with a narrow corridor without upsetting traffic flow. The detour was to be stacked atop the highway construction leading to the destruction of the Promenade and construction of a new six lane highway. Cantilevered roadways were destroyed in stages. Traffic was moved to the new interstate. Robert Moses’s infrastructure projects influenced generations of engineers, architects and urban planners. Hindsight suggests while the BQE facilitated regional connectivity it also fractured communities and ruined homes and businesses along the commercial corridor of Meeker Ave. Footage shows machinery from local companies and the construction process including home demolition, material removal, ground leveling, asphalt laying and gantry installation. It shows urban New York and it’s low density neighborhoods along the expressway. Conclusion shows heavy congestion and flooding on the expressway making a social comment with a sign reading ‘Progress?.’ Record rainfall water logged the city in 1971 forcing a dispatch of tow trucks to the expressway near Greenpoint. (0:00) Film begins off Laurel Hill Blvd. in Woodside. Exposed infrastructure and construction materials litter the site (:14). Shots sweep residential homes (:27) and a corner store (:33). Detour signs (:35), forklifts, tractors, bulldozers (:52) and barricades follow (:59). A brick home with a distinctive roofline appears in a low density neighborhood (1:09). The home owner walks up his front steps and waves (1:15). Day footage shows more construction vehicles (1:18), a crane, workers milling the grounds (1:23) and the traffic flowing around them. Some nearby houses are boarded up (1:32). Linens dangle on the line between (1:37) row homes. Barricades and a wrecking ball follow (1:44). In April, (1:58) the widening project progresses (2:07). Workers operate a Colonial Concrete Company concrete truck (2:17). An Eclipse Mattress delivery truck passes (2:22). Crane’s of Horn Construction Co. are put to use (2:40). A worker stands amid large steel piping (3:10). Another descends the crane near the Co-Op building (3:43). The cooperative housing was considerably new. Built in 1966, it is largest housing cooperative in the world. An LDA backhoe (345) scoops earth. Steel frames stick up in the ground (3:47). A bulldozer chews into a run down home (4:03). The house tips from it’s foundation (4:20). In October, (6:40) concrete foundations appear complete (6:53). Workers operate bulldozers (8:33). The asphalt laying process follows (9:22) using a Mac Asphalt dump truck. Mac operated out of East Williamsburg, NY. Men smooth the surface (9:32). A Horn crane and Colonial Concrete dumping truck follow (9:57). Horn operated out of Merrick, NY. Footage shows progress on the overpass (10:24) and more asphalt laying (10:34). Traffic signs arrive (10:58). A gantry is installed (11:19) near Roosevelt Ave. and Queens Blvd. (11:34). Automobiles drive over newly paved roads (12:43). A sign reads ‘The end 1970’ indicating the conclusion of renovations (12:57). Traffic moves smooth at first (13:00), then quickly clogs up (13:10). Another sign reads ‘June 1971 Progress?’ (13:27) followed stalled vehicles and flooding (13:32). Cars (13:38) and trucks wade waters (13:41). Pedestrians stand outside a stalled vehicle (14:57).
