In Italy, Roberto Vannacci is gaining popularity with his new right-wing party, Futuro Nazionale. In February 2026, the former paratrooper general and Member of the European Parliament founded the party, aiming to position it further to the right than the governing parties. At a press conference, Vannacci said: “We are not ashamed to say it, and I even ask you to say it too: ‘Italy for the Italians!’” For Meloni’s right-wing government, the new party could become a competitor. In IJburg zijn ze geschrokken van een grote ruzie op straat die uiteindelijk uitmondde in een steekpartij. Het slachtoffer, een 38-jarige man, raakte daarbij levensbedreigend gewond, laat de politie nu weten. Inmiddels is de toestand van de man stabiel. Het is nog onduidelijk wat er aan die steekpartij vooraf ging, de politie doet daar nu onderzoek naar. Het gebeurde allemaal op de kruising van de Maria Austriastraat met de Talbotstraat. De politie laat weten dat ze rond 22.00 uur een melding kregen van een ruzie waarbij zo'n 15 tot 20 mensen betrokken waren. Die ruzie escaleerde dus in een steekpartij. Dat gebeurde toen de politie al onderweg was. Buurtbewoners verleenden eerste hulp waarna de hulpdiensten de behandeling overnamen. Volgens de politie verkeerde het slachtoffer op dat moment in een levensbedreigende situatie. Lang niet alle buurtbewoners die we spreken hebben iets van de steekpartij gezien, maar ze zijn wel geschrokken van wat er gebeurd is. Sommige buurtbewoners denken dat een groep overlastgevende jongeren hier iets mee te maken heeft, al is niet duidelijk of dat ook echt zo is. Dit gedeelte van IJburg is vaker in het nieuws geweest vanwege overlastgevende hangjongeren. Een deel van de bewoners zegt nog altijd overlast te ervaren, maar er zijn ook veel mensen die zeggen dat het allemaal wel meevalt en dat het hier normaal gesproken rustig is. Wel is dit gedeelte, het gebied rondom het Joris Ivensplein, al eens eerder in het nieuws geweest. Toen werd een reeks auto- en scooterbranden door buurtbewoners toegeschreven aan diezelfde groep hangjongeren. Of die jongeren nu iets met de ruzie van gisteravond te maken hebben gehad, is volgens de politie niet vast te stellen. Dat komt doordat nog onduidelijk is wie er allemaal bij die ruzie betrokken waren en welke rol ze in het conflict speelden. Om die reden is de politie nog altijd op zoek naar getuigen. He is facing a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted. Hearn, who denies the accusations, says he had noticed a partly detached piece of the Reflecting Pool's blue liner and reached into the water to see what it felt like, when he was quickly arrested and subsequently held in jail for five hours. He is one of at least six people who have been arrested for allegedly vandalizing the Reflecting Pool, which has turned green due to algae blooms despite being painted "American-flag blue" at the behest of President Trump. "We do think that Davey is being scapegoated for the failures of the White House with respect to the Reflecting Pool, that the blame is being shifted," says Norm Eisen, co-founder and executive chair of Democracy Defenders Fund. "He's innocent, and we intend to vigorously defend the matter." Eisen speaks about some of the other 300 cases Democracy Defenders Fund is involved in, including legal fights against the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger and the Trump administration's executive order that attempted to end birthright citizenship. Rafael Andres Rubio Bohorquez was taken by federal immigration officers in January during a routine asylum interview. Rubio Bohorquez, who is from Venezuela, was detained despite holding temporary protected status that should have shielded him from deportation. "People are sad; detainees are sad. It's people that try to build a future in this country, people that have complied with the law," says Rafael Andres Rubio Bohorquez of detained immigrants he met while being held in multiple ICE jails. "They have paid their taxes. They are raising families." Rubio Bohorquez says he fears being detained again, even though his attorney Gwyneth Hesser says that would be in violation of a court order. "But it seems right now that's not that much solace, because sometimes things are happening that are outside of the law," says Hesser. At least 25 people died in New Jersey due to extreme heat and humidity, and more than 185 million people — over half of U.S. residents — were under heat alerts over the weekend. This follows a record-shattering European heat wave that's been blamed for thousands of deaths across Spain, France and Germany. Climate scientists say the burning of fossil fuels is the primary cause of global warming and the reason why heat waves are becoming longer, hotter and more frequent. "Global warming is accelerating past thresholds that we used to consider unacceptable," says climate journalist David Wallace-Wells. "There are a lot of questions about why we haven't prepared adequately for these heat waves," says Wallace-Wells, but he argues that it is still possible to retrofit the planet to mitigate the climate catastrophe. Tussen de Dam en het Homomonument liggen sinds kort 52 bronzen tegels in de grond. Het vormt de zogenoemde Walk of Pride. Op iedere tegel is een uitleg te vinden over een persoon die veel heeft betekend voor de emancipatie van de queer-gemeenschap. Jillis Bruggeman werd in 1803 opgehangen voor het stadhuis van Schiedam, de doodstraf. Justitie had in de gaten gekregen dat hij seksuele relaties had gehad met mannen. Jillis probeerde nog te vluchten, maar werd uiteindelijk toch gearresteerd. 'Vuyle ontugt', luidt de officiële aanklacht. De tegel met het verhaal van Jillis is de eerste die je tegenkomt tijdens de Walk of Pride. Hij was zeker niet de eerste die geëxecuteerd is vanwege diens seksualiteit, gelukkig wel de laatste. Het moet een blijvende herinnering zijn aan degenen die zich hebben ingezet voor de rechten van de queergemeenschap. En ook om mensen over het verleden op de hoogte te brengen, zodat het niet opnieuw herhaald wordt. "We hebben gezeten met achttien queer-organisaties en iedereen heeft zijn eigen helden gekozen", zegt Richard Keldoulis, een van de initiatiefnemers. "Zo zijn we bij deze selectie gekomen." Hij vervolgt: "Het is belangrijk dat mensen weten dat bijvoorbeeld homoseksualiteit, transgenders, interseksualiteit. Dat het allemaal al lang bestond in de geschiedenis." De Walk of Pride is een geschenk aan de stad vanwege de World Pride dit jaar. De tegels blijven minimaal nog tien jaar liggen. "Maar hopelijk wat langer", stelt Keldoulis. "Er is veel homofobie, iedereen in de gemeenschap voelt het.
