The index has charted how press freedoms have deteriorated in the United States and elsewhere over the past 25 years. The U.S. was ranked 17th in the world in 2002. In the latest index, the U.S. is down to 64th, falling seven places since last year. "It's tempting to lay all of this at the feet of President Donald Trump, and to be clear, he is the single biggest threat to American press freedom today," says Clayton Weimers, the North America director for Reporters Without Borders. "But the mere fact that we fell from 57th last year tells us that this isn't just a Trump problem. We have structural deficiencies that are imperiling the future of press freedom in this country. Voor een aantal zwemmers uit Oost is hun dagelijkse ochtendduik in het Flevoparkbad bijna heilig. Maar sinds dit seizoen moeten ze hun baantjes uitstellen naar de middag. Want waar het buitenbad altijd om tien uur openging, is dat vanaf nu pas om twaalf uur. Dat is volgens de gemeente noodzakelijk omdat het in die twee uur vaak te rustig is om de kosten te dekken. Als het kan ligt Vivian Vrolijk samen met haar buurvrouw elke dag om tien uur in het water. Ze steekt in haar badjas de straat over en drinkt daarna een kop koffie met de buren. Vooral de sociale functie van het zwemmen is voor haar belangrijk. "Je spreekt je buren en bent tegelijkertijd gezond bezig. Het is meer dan alleen een zwembad. Die ontmoetingsplek met de vaste mensen ga ik echt missen", vertelt ze. Zij is een van de zwemmers die enorm baalt van de kortere openingstijden van het Flevoparkbad. Net als een aantal zwemmers dat de nieuwe tijden nog niet had meegekregen. "Ik ben hier helemaal heen gefietst vanuit Noord", vertelt een zwemmer die haar badpak al aanheeft. "Ik ben de Schellingwouderbrug en die andere brug helemaal over gefietst. Heel jammer." De reden voor deze wijziging is dat tussen tien en twaalf uur doordeweeks weinig mensen gebruikmaken van het zwembad, aldus de gemeente. "Ook als het slecht weer is zijn de buitenbaden open. Dit zijn te weinig mensen om de kosten van bijvoorbeeld het personeel te dekken. Deze keuze maken we zodat voor andere onderdelen en activiteiten, zoals zwemlessen en betaalbare toegangskaartjes, voldoende geld beschikbaar is", schrijft een woordvoerder. Mensen die echt graag in de ochtend willen zwemmen, kunnen dat heel vroeg doen: van half zeven tot half tien bij de vereniging Flevoparkbad. Zij regelen alles zelf. Maar volgens voorzitter Anneke de Vries is dat niet hetzelfde. "Ten eerste is dat voor sommige mensen echt vroeg en daarnaast is de sfeer gewoon anders. Om tien uur blijven mensen hangen en drinken nog een kop koffie samen. De vroege zwemmers komen echt alleen om te sporten." De Vries hoopt dan ook dat de tijden nog worden teruggedraaid. De kortere openingstijden duren tot 4 juli. If you’ve ever looked into the eyes of the four presidents of Mount Rushmore, you may have noticed something striking. Rather than the smooth, flat gaze of classical Greek sculpture, they are cut deep into the granite as square recesses, causing light to hit the edges and reflect in a way that makes them appear almost shiny from a distance. Een automobilist is vanmiddag met zijn auto in het water van de Herengracht beland. De bestuurder kon zelf uit de auto klimmen terwijl die op het water dreef. De opvarenden van een rondvaartboot trokken de drenkeling uit het water. De automobilist raakte niet gewond. Het is niet duidelijk hoe de auto in de gracht terechtkwam, zegt een woordvoerder van de brandweer. De brandweer en ambulance kwamen rond 14.00 uur wel ter plaatse, maar op dat moment was de automobilist het water al uit. Het ongeluk gebeurde in het water van de Herengracht ter hoogte van de Utrechtsestraat. Een boot van Waternet haalde de gezonken Smart uit de gracht. Waternet was toevallig om de hoek oude fietsen en ander materiaal uit de gracht aan het vissen. Met de brandweer werd overlegd om in dit geval ook de net te water geraakte auto op te vissen. Isabel Allende began writing daily letters to her mother when she was a teenager. Over the next several decades, they exchanged over 24,000 of them. Allende credits their letter writing with removing the need for small talk and creating a deep bond between them. In Bergen is het proces gestart over het carnavalsdrama in Strépy op 20 maart 2022. Paolo Falzone reed toen 174 km/u in de bebouwde kom, waar op dat moment een carnavalsoptocht bezig was. Hij reed in op de stoet, versnelde, schepte 2 mensen op en bleef nog een kilometer doorrijden met de slachtoffers op zijn motorkap.
