Op een Nederlands cruiseschip in de Atlantische Oceaan is vermoedelijk het hantavirus uitgebroken. Drie opvarenden, onder wie twee Nederlanders, zijn overleden. De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie (WHO) denkt dat zeven andere mensen besmet zijn met het virus. On Thursday, Israel’s military intercepted nearly two dozen boats traveling with the Global Sumud Flotilla as they worked to bring food and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The vessels were chased down overnight by drones and military speedboats near the Greek island of Crete. Their radar was jammed as Israeli troops carrying assault rifles boarded the ships and ordered participants to their hands and knees. Some flotilla members had to be rescued after one boat was left to sink in international waters. About 175 people were arrested, including Hannah Smith, who describes the violent raid, arrest and detention of herself and fellow activists. Two flotilla participants are still being detained without charges. Saif Abukeshek of Spain and Thiago Ávila of Brazi have been transferred to an Israeli prison, where they have launched a hunger strike. Last year, Israel carried out similarly violent raids on a previous attempt by the Global Sumud Flotilla to break the Israeli siege of Gaza. Many of the 440 people arrested in those raids reported torture and abuse in Israeli custody.

Two Jewish men were stabbed last week in a predominantly Jewish neighbourhood in London - a shocking attack that, fortunately, did not end in tragedy. This is not an isolated incident. Across Europe and the United States, antisemitic violence is rising at an alarming rate. Antisemitism must be unequivocally condemned wherever it appears, just as all forms of political violence should be rejected without hesitation. At the same time, understanding the difference between legitimate criticism of Israel and hostility toward Jewish people is crucial - a line that is too often blurred in today’s discourse. Political rhetoric from across the spectrum can inflame tensions and accusations of antisemitism are sometimes used to shut down debate rather than engage with it. AT5 doet vanavond uitgebreid verslag van de Stille Tocht door het centrum van de stad en de Nationale Herdenking op de Dam. De uitzending begint om 18.15 uur. De Stille Tocht, voorafgaand aan de twee minuten stilte op de Dam, begint op het Museumplein en loopt via het Rijksmuseum, Weteringschans, Vijzelstraat en Rokin richting de Dam. Tijdens de tocht vertellen we de verhalen uit de buurt. Aansluitend volgen we de Nationale Herdenking op de Dam, waar twee minuten stilte in acht wordt genomen en koning Willem-Alexander en koningin Máxima een krans zullen leggen. De uitzending begint om 18.15 uur en is te volgen op tv en via onze site. Het Nationaal Monument op de Dam is vanochtend, op de dag van de Nationale Dodenherdenking, beklad met rode verf. Ook is er het woord 'genocide' op geschreven. Op foto's van tipgevers aan AT5 is te zien dat het monument op meerdere plekken is besmeurd. Burgemeester Halsema spreekt van 'een ongelooflijk laffe daad'. Ook premier Jetten en het Centraal Joods Overleg (CJO) reageren verontwaardigd. Het is nog onduidelijk wie verantwoordelijk is voor de actie. De politie doet onderzoek en de gemeente gaat aangifte doen, zegt een woordvoerder. Op dit moment werkt de gemeente 'met man en macht om het monument schoon te krijgen', aldus Halsema in een bericht op Threads. Ze noemt de bekladding daarin 'geen protest, maar vernielzucht en opzettelijke beschadiging van ons nationale monument'. Volgens haar 'kwetst dit niet alleen nabestaanden van de Tweede Wereldoorlog, maar alle Nederlanders voor wie onze nationale herdenking belangrijk is'. "Moeten ook monumenten bewaakt worden?" Voorzitter Centraal Joods Overleg (CJO) Ook koepelorganisatie het Centraal Joods Overleg (CJO) heeft gereageerd en veroordeelt de actie. Volgens voorzitter Chanan Hertzberger gaat het 'van kwaad tot erger'. "Moeten de monumenten ook bewaakt worden?" Hij vindt dat de regering 'snel met scherpere wetgeving moet komen waarmee een meer afschrikwekkend effect wordt gecreëerd'. Premier Rob Jetten spreekt in een reactie op X van 'een idiote en volstrekt onacceptabele actie'. "Al helemaal vandaag, op 4 mei. Laten we vandaag eensgezind zijn en samen met respect stilstaan." Ook andere kabinetsleden en Kamerleden reageren ontzet. Bij het monument vindt vanavond de Nationale Dodenherdenking plaats. Daarbij zijn onder andere de koning en koningin aanwezig en worden kransen gelegd. Om 20.00 uur is het twee minuten stil ter nagedachtenis aan de slachtoffers van de Tweede Wereldoorlog en latere oorlogssituaties en vredesmissies. Monument eerder doelwit Het is niet de eerste keer dat het Nationaal Monument op de Dam doelwit is van een bekladding; dat gebeurde ook in augustus vorig jaar, tijdens een pro-Palestijnse demonstratie. Zo'n twee maanden daarna werd ook het Paleis op de Dam besmeurd met rode verf. Daarbij stond de tekst "fuck Israël". Actiegroep Palestine Action NL eiste de actie toen op. Rondom het Herman Hellingplantsoen in Geuzenveld ligt op elke hoek van de straat een flinke berg afval. De buurtbewoners die we spreken lijken vooral richting dezelfde dader te wijzen: de bewoners uit de buurt zelf. Het lijkt inmiddels een vanzelfsprekendheid: berichten over afvalproblematiek in de stad. Ook nu is het weer raak, ditmaal in Nieuw-West. Nadat we van een buurtbewoner foto's ontvingen van de grote berg afval, gingen we zelf langs om de schade op te maken. Bij aankomst bleken de vuilnismannen al bezig met het ophalen van een deel van het grofvuil. Toch paste niet alles in de wagen.
