Also unfortunately, we don't know much about McNitt, but there are many intriguing clues in the film! The film documents McNitt and "Uncle Ben"'s look back at family history dating to the Gold Rush, a search for a treasure map, and a trip to Asia aboard the M/S Fermoor. This trip spans Japan, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Footage includes SF’s Chinatown, Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel, the Mojiko Retro District, Chinese junks and sampans in Victoria Harbor, Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur’s home, Tiger Balm Garden and a number of temples and mosques. (Note: We believe the film dates to around 1950 as it identifies Malaysia as Malaya. M/S Fermoor was scrapped in 1960.) Many people were subject to aggressive physical force. Of the 56 aid-carrying vessels attempting to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza, more than a third were seized by the Israeli military,” recounts flotilla member Hannah Smith. Some flotilla members had to be rescued after one boat was “left sinking,” Smith reports. Two members, Saif Abukeshek of Spain and Thiago Ávila of Brazil, are now being held without charges in an Israeli prison. “It is a favorite tactic of the Israeli regime to try to bully people into silence and submission, to threaten people, and they’ve gotten away with it for decades,” says Rania Batrice, a Palestinian American member of the Global Sumud Flotilla’s communications team. The medication, used in roughly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S., can no longer be sent by mail or prescribed through telemedicine. But previous abortion restrictions show that curtailing access doesn’t reduce the prevalence of abortions. Instead, they make the procedure more dangerous, and even deadly. “They’re trying to stop the unstoppable. And as a result, these restrictions are pretty draconian and increasingly absurd,” says The Nation’s abortion access correspondent Amy Littlefield, who also explains what alternate steps patients and providers can now take to access medication abortion. Vanochtend is het Nationaal Monument op de Dam, op de dag van de Nationale Dodenherdenking, beklad met rode verf. Veel Amsterdammers kwamen even langs om de bekladding met eigen ogen te zien.  "Dit doe je niet, zeker nu niet, vandaag niet", vertelt een vrouw die vanochtend naar de Dam is gekomen. Een andere vrouw hoorde op de radio over de bekladding en is direct naar de Dam gegaan. "Ik begrijp de emoties, maar je moet dit niet op monumenten doen", vertelt ze.  Een man die om de hoek woont is niet te spreken over de actie: "Verdriet, schaamte en zeer respectloos", was het eerste dat in hem opkwam toen hij de rode verf zag. "Dat mensen niet nadenken over de gevolgen voor nabestaanden." Seymour Bernstein passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 30, 2026, just a few days after his 99th birthday. For Seymour, music was a means for realizing our best selves, and he believed anybody and everybody should be encouraged to participate in it. He had a twinkle in his eye and cast a spell on everyone he encountered. Vanuit haar oude huis luisteren mensen naar het verhaal van verzetsvrouw Tante Cor De bewoners van het pand aan de Prinsengracht wisten zelf niet wat er in de oorlog achter hun voordeur heeft afgespeeld. Totdat journalist Rianne Oosterom aanbelde om hen dat te vertellen. Vandaag gaf zij vanuit de slaapkamer van een van de huidige bewoners een lezing over de verzetsdaden van Tante Cor. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog woonden in het pand aan de Prinsengracht verschillende jonge, werkende vrouwen bij elkaar. De directrice van het huis, die voor hen kookte en een oogje in het zeil hield, was Cor Koster, beter bekend als Tante Cor. In de oorlog had ze een belangrijke rol in het verzet. Ze spoorde de meisjes die bij haar woonden aan om te werken als koeriers, ook zaten er onderduikers in haar tuinhuis en in de hongerwinter zette ze een voedseldistributiecentrum op. Journalist en historicus Rianne Oosterom stuitte tijdens haar onderzoek over vrouwen in het verzet in de Tweede Wereldoorlog geregeld op het adres van het huis aan de Prinsengracht. Ze besloot gewoon eens aan te bellen. Een paar bewoonsters - nog steeds een huis vol werkende, jonge vrouwen - deden open. Ze hadden nog nooit van Tante Cor gehoord. Lezing in de slaapkamer Vandaag geeft Oosterom een lezing vanuit het huis waar Cor haar verzetsdaden uitvoerde. "Achter gesloten deuren heeft zij ontzettend veel voor elkaar gekregen. Wat zij deed was niet groots en meeslepend, maar heel effectief. Door zo'n voedseldistributiecentrum kon je echt veel mensen redden. Net als de telefoonlijn die ze faciliteerde. Dat zijn vormen van verzet die onderbelicht zijn gebleven", vertelt ze. Tot groot verdriet van Tante Cor is ze na de oorlog nooit erkend voor haar verzetswerk. In de oorlog werd ze ontslagen. Ze is daarna ondergedoken in Drenthe waar ze doorging met haar verzetswerk. Toen ze terugkeerde naar Amsterdam kreeg ze haar geliefde baan als directrice van het huis aan de Prinsengracht niet meer terug. Dat heeft veel pijn gedaan, vertelt Oosterom. Deze lezing is onderdeel van Open Joodse Huizen & Huizen van Verzet.
