Sinds de verwoestende brand op Nieuwjaarsnacht, die de Vondelkerk voor een deel in de as legde, staat kunstenaar Ruud Spil elke week in de Vondelstraat. De komende drie jaar legt hij - met houtskool en olieverf - het renovatieproces van de kerk vast: "De een zijn dood is de ander zijn brood." "Neogotisch, ik vond het ook een soort Batman-achtige kerk", omschrijft Ruud Spil, terwijl hij naar de Vondelkerk, staand tegen een strakblauwe hemel, kijkt. "Ik fietste altijd langs de kerk en dan keek ik even omhoog naar de klok hoe laat het was." Dit is de tweede keer dat we bij Ruud langskomen; de eerste keer kwam de regen met bakken uit de lucht en deed de paraplu van de verslaggever dienst als bescherming voor de anders nat wordende houtskooltekeningen in Ruuds karretje. Vandaag is het wel weer om te tekenen. En dat doet Spil sinds de brand één of soms meerdere keren per week. In zijn carrière als kunstenaar schilderde Spil lange tijd landschappen. Koeien waren ook favoriet: "Ik heb de koeien van de koning in Noorwegen nog geschilderd." Waarom dan nu een kerk? "Ik had wel wat met die kerk. En toen 'ie opeens in brand stond dacht ik: dat beeld van een verbrande kerk, dat zie je ook maar even, dat moet ik vastleggen." "Opeens zag ik allemaal steigers staan. Ik wist niet dat het zo snel zou gaan met het herbouwen. Dus toen wist ik: ik moet er snel bij zijn." Hij heeft nog wel even getwijfeld, want "ik wilde niet profiteren van zo'n verschrikkelijke gebeurtenis", maar besloot: "De een zijn dood is de ander zijn brood." Picasso Na overleg met Stadsherstel kreeg Spil toestemming om de renovatie de komende drie jaar óp en naast de kerk vast te leggen. In oranje hesje en veiligheidsbril gehesen zat hij de afgelopen weken tussen de brokstukken op het dak van de kerk: "Als ze me zien zitten roepen de bouwvakkers: 'Hé, Picasso!'" De komende tijd levert hij maandelijks een kunstwerk aan bij Stadsherstel, op houtskool of olieverf. Die kunstwerken worden vervolgens verkocht, en ook worden er ansichtkaarten van gedrukt. Helingproces En hoewel kunstenaar al snel als eenzaam beroep wordt gezien, verlegen om een praatje hoeft Spil niet te zitten. Voorbijgangers die hem zien werken, delen graag hun herinneringen over de kerk of geven hun mening over zijn werk: "Altijd positief hoor". Ook tijdens ons bezoek stoppen er continu mensen, toeristen én Amsterdammers: "Is dit houtskool?". Een expat-buurman komt een thermosbeker koffie brengen. Spil: "Ik krijg ook af en toe het idee dat het een soort van helingsproces is, doordat ik het teken en mensen er met me over gaan praten." Of het ook een beetje een obsessie is: "Ja, ik denk het wel. Maar zo is mijn natuur een beetje, ik ben niet zo'n Japanner met een cameraatje die alles snel wil vastleggen. Als ik één keer een tekeningetje maak, of het nou koeien of markten zijn, dan wordt het meteen een heel project." We asked Gen Z in Berlin how they spend their weekends, and the answer is… both. Some are out with friends, others are curled up on the couch, and plenty are happily switching between the two.  This shift is reflected in rising trends: BookTok, reading, and traditionally “granny-coded” hobbies like crocheting and knitting are gaining traction. Drinking habits are changing too — a 2023 study shows that only 24% of Gen Z regularly drinks beer, compared to one-third of millennials.  But less alcohol doesn’t necessarily mean fewer parties. Door de rondgang van NOS Stories blijkt dat geschiedenis- en maatschappijleerdocenten steeds vaker geconfronteerd worden met desinformatie over de Holocaust. De snelle verspreiding van desinformatie op sociale media is zorgelijk, zegt het ministerie van Onderwijs.

Iedereen raakt weleens wat kwijt, maar Lionel maakte het wel heel bont. Hij werd na een avond doorhalen wakker zonder zijn onderbeenprothese, die zo'n 9000 euro kost. Lionel was wanhopig en zijn oproep bij AT5 was net opgenomen, toen hij een verlossend telefoontje kreeg. Afgelopen zaterdag kon Lionel Gorissen de slaap niet vatten, dus besloot hij bij de Oranjerie een slaapmutsje te drinken. Daar zaten Amerikaanse toeristen aan de bar die hem vroegen naar een typische Amsterdams drankje. Zal je net zien, dus vijf kopstootjes verder wankelde Gorissen naar huis. Daar is hij vlak voor de deur in slaap gevallen, waar zijn buren hem vonden en naar bed brachten. De volgende dag werd hij wakker zonder telefoon én zonder zijn onderbeen. Even dacht dat hij dat het een grap was van zijn vriendin, maar toen het besef indaalde, kwam ook de schrik. Want zijn onderbeenprothese is van 'levensbelang'. "Het zorgt ervoor dat ik kan meedraaien in de maatschappij." Even een nieuwe kopen zit er niet, de prijs loopt snel tegen 9000 euro. Nee, zoveel drinken is niet slim. Dat weet Gorissen ook wel, maar wie neemt nou een beenprothese mee van een ander? Gorissen heeft er afgelopen week flink wat stress van gehad, en schaamt zich. Zijn oude prothese kan hij wel gebruiken, maar past hem niet goed. "Het doet pijn en je krijgt er wondjes van." En dan, als het interview erop staat en de verslaggever weer terug is op de redactie, opeens een telefoontje. Zijn been is alsnog gevonden, zo'n 300 meter van zijn huis, bij café Tabac. De barman vond de prothese tijdens het sluiten van de bar. Gorissen is ongelofelijk opgelucht. "Extase voel ik. Echt een last van mijn schouders. Nu kan ik weer verder." Ondanks dat de prothese is gevonden, is Lionel toch een inzamelingsactie gestart. Dierenwinkel 't Dierenhoekje op de Zeilstraat is al 65 jaar een begrip in de Hoofddorppleinbuurt. Sinds 22 jaar wordt de zaak gerund door Kirsten de Kloet en haar moeder. Volgende maand wordt het naastgelegen pand - voorheen een supermarkt - overgenomen door Pets Place, een grote dierenwinkelketen. Kirsten en haar moeder zijn daar allesbehalve blij mee. En ook de vaste klanten vinden het een slecht idee. Kirsten sloeg bijna steil achterover toen ze hoorde dat de naastgelegen zaak een dierenwinkel zou worden. "Ik vind het walgelijk", vertelt ze. "Als ze verderop in de straat waren gaan zitten had ik er geen moeite mee gehad." De vaste klanten die we spreken geven allemaal aan nog altijd bij 't Dierenhoekje langs te gaan, en niet bij de buren. "Dat zou voelen als vreemdgaan", vertelt een vrouw die al jaren brokjes koopt bij Kirsten. "Ik kom ook om lekker te kletsen", zegt een andere klant. "Ik ben geshockeerd", aldus een andere vaste klant. Gemeente staat machteloos De gemeente zegt de zorgen van Kirsten en haar moeder te begrijpen, maar niets te kunnen doen. "We kunnen (dieren)ketens niet weren als deze binnen het omgevingsplan vallen, zoals hier het geval is", laat ze schriftelijk weten aan AT5. Toch houdt Kirsten de moed erin en laat ze weten standvastig te zijn: "Misschien passen we ons assortiment aan, maar het is vooral belangrijk dat mensen zien dat wij niet bij de buren horen." Pets Place geeft aan de buurt beter te kunnen dienen, door een extra keuze aan te kunnen bieden: "We geloven dat verschillende winkels op de Zeilstraat elkaar kunnen aanvullen, waarbij onze specialisatie op honden en katten goed kan samengaan met de aanwezige expertise van anderen."
