While tabs are great for beginners to quickly learn finger placement, they have limitations. Standard notation provides much more information: rhythm, multiple voices (melody, bass, accompaniment), dynamics (loud/soft), and tempo changes. The May Day Strong coalition here in the United States says 3,000 protests and events are scheduled across the country with organizers calling for "no school, no work, no shopping." The largest May Day protest in Los Angeles is planned at MacArthur Park. Pedro Trujillo, the coordinator of the Los Angeles May Day Coalition, says the July presence of immigration agents with SWAT gear and armored vehicles in MacArthur Park laid the foundation for a high May Day turnout. "That's why we see such a strong coalition coming together, over 120 organizations and unions here in Los Angeles endorsing this march. We haven't seen this level of support, of engagement, in a very long time," says Trujillo. "We are creating a coalition to resist the tyranny of billionaires in this moment," adds Stacy Davis Gates, president of the Chicago Teachers Union and president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers. "Billionaires put a president in place to dismantle democracy, a right-wing Congress to watch it and a right-wing Supreme Court to block us doing anything about it." The TPS program grants protection from deportation and work authorization to immigrants whose home countries are deemed unsafe to return to, most often because of war or natural disaster. The case could ultimately have ramifications for more than 1 million TPS holders from over a dozen countries. TPS holders from Haiti and Syria say their countries remain unsafe and that DHS did not follow proper procedure. The lawsuit brought by Haitian TPS holders also accuses the administration of being motivated by racism — an allegation supported by a lower court ruling in February. "Haiti is still in bad shape, and [TPS holders] cannot return there. So, you can imagine now the uncertainty that they live with on a daily basis," says Vilès Dorsainvil, a plaintiff in Trump v. Miot, the case brought by Haitian TPS holders. Dorsainvil is the co-founder and executive director of the Haitian Support Center in Springfield, Ohio. President Trump targeted the Haitian community in Springfield in 2024, falsely saying Haitian residents were eating pet dogs and cats. "We've been scapegoated as a community," says Dorsainvil. De ‘Godfather van Nederlandse internetcultuur’; dat is hoe fans Merijn Scholte-Albers online noemen. Als tiener startte hij Mastermovies met Paul Huig. De site werd al snel door tienduizenden bezocht, via een Winzipje kon je video’s van het duo downloaden. Mastermovies werd zo’n hype dat zelfs Hyves naar de site linkte als de server offline was. Maar Merijn doet inmiddels compleet andere dingen: hij toert de wereld over met Weval en regisseert films, zoals ‘Straf’. AT5 vroeg zich af hoe het nu met Merijn is. Mastermovies is de artiestennaam van een voormalig duo bestaande uit Paul Huig en Merijn Scholte-Albers. Ze zijn voornamelijk bekend van de zogenaamde fundubs waarin ze films en televisieseries nasynchroniseerden. Dit betrof vaak humoristische teksten die ongerelateerd waren aan de oorspronkelijke film of serie. Tevens maakten ze filmpjes waarin ze zelf speelden. Naast Huig en Scholte Albers, werkte ook Coen Beeksma mee aan een aantal fundubs en was cameraman van eigen filmpjes. Mastermovies heeft sindsdien een cultstatus bereikt onder Nederlandse en Vlaamse jongeren. Hetty en Fritz - de ouders van Monica van Rijn - waren de enige twee uit een familie van tachtig die terugkeerden na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Over hun ervaringen en de zeventien concentratiekampen die zij overleefden, schreef hun dochter een boek waar ze twintig jaar over deed. "Mijn moeder had wel acht keer dood kunnen gaan, maar dat deed ze niet." Monica van Rijn was drie jaar oud toen ze een boekje met foto's uit Auschwitz uit de kast van haar ouders pakte. Ze weet nog goed wat voor indruk die foto's - van vermoorde, naakte mensen opgestapeld in een kuil - op haar maakten. Haar moeder kwam de kamer binnen en gilde dat ze het moest terugleggen. Ze vertelde haar dat het absoluut geen kinderboek was. Vanaf dat moment is Monica begonnen met het stellen van vragen over de oorlog. Haar moeder was een van de zeldzame praters en heeft Monica veel verteld over wat zij meemaakte. Op basis van die gesprekken en van brieven die haar ouders naar elkaar stuurden, schreef ze een boek. Ze deed er twintig jaar over. Zowel Hetty als Fritz overleefden meerdere concentratiekampen, waaronder Auschwitz. Monica's vader werd aan het werk gezet om grondstoffen te winnen en eindigde bij Oskar Schindler, die tijdens de holocaust 1200 joden wist te redden. Haar vader is na de bevrijding teruggelopen naar Amsterdam. Ten tijde van de bevrijding was Hetty op transport onderweg naar Denemarken en kwam een maand later per boot weer terug naar haar woonplaats. "Ik kan me voorstellen dat het een waanzinnige reünie geweest moet zijn. Maar ook doorregen met zorg en angst van hoe ze elkaar zouden aantreffen. Maar ze hebben dagen en nachten vol gepraat met elkaar. Ik vind het bijzonder dat ze dat gedaan hebben. Maar wat zij die jaren ervoor hebben meegemaakt en al het verlies dat zij hebben geleden, blijft een wond te groot om te helen." What If Truth Is Not Enough? Hans Blumenberg’s Philosophy of Myth What if a world made only of facts would not make us more rational, but more anxious? In this episode, we explore the philosophy of Hans Blumenberg, the 20th-century German thinker who argued that myths and metaphors are not childish mistakes or primitive science. They are survival tools: the mental shelters humans build to cope with a chaotic, indifferent reality. Blumenberg believed that human beings are exposed to what he called the absolutism of reality: the overwhelming pressure of death, randomness, suffering, nature, and uncertainty. To survive that exposure, we create stories, names, gods, metaphors, models, and shared meanings. These do not simply decorate reality. They make reality bearable. We look at Blumenberg’s ideas about myth, metaphorology, the “creature of deficiency,” the psychological role of polytheism, the modern myth of progress, and the way ancient stories return in our current anxieties about artificial intelligence, productivity, politics, and technology.
