Poland is emerging as one of Europe’s most intriguing cool-climate wine countries and disease-resistant PIWI grapes could play a significant part in its future. I’m joined by Espen Madsen of Winnica Silesian to explore how varieties including Souvignier Gris, Hibernal and Jutrzenka perform in the continental climate of Lower Silesia. Espen tells me how he moved from oceanography and environmental consultancy into winemaking with his wife, Sonia, and her farming family. We explore why Winnica Silesian planted both PIWI and Vitis vinifera varieties, how its granite soils affect the vineyard, and how the vines cope with frost, summer heat, fungal pressure and a relatively short growing season. We look at varieties including Souvignier Gris, Johanniter, Hibernal, Jutrzenka, Seyval Blanc, Solaris, Bianka, Cabernet Cortis, Regent and Rondo. We also discuss the estate’s Riesling and Roter Riesling, the advantages of disease-resistant vines for organic viticulture, and the winemaking freedom offered by these lesser-known grapes. Espen and I consider the environmental and commercial advantages of PIWIs, the potential risks associated with excessive yields, and the challenge of marketing unfamiliar grape names. A year ago today, the United States bombed a small boat in the Caribbean, killing nine people on board. Two survivors clung to the wreckage for 45 minutes, reportedly waving for help, before a second “double-tap” strike killed them, too. President Trump posted a video of the first attack on social media, announcing that 11 terrorists had been killed in a military operation that would be called “Operation Southern Spear.” The bombings have killed at least 227 people in nearly 70 separate strikes. In a new documentary, the investigative team at Al Jazeera’s Fault Lines traveled to St. Lucia and Colombia to speak with two families who believe their loved ones, both fishermen, were killed at sea by U.S. airstrikes. “There's a real disconnect between the way the U.S. describes what is happening. They describe it as a war. They describe these people as enemy combatants that are attacking America,” says Josh Rushing, a senior correspondent for Fault Lines who worked on the documentary.

This series was released in the 1920’s through distribution company Pathegrams. It was created by prodigious director Robert N. Bradenbury, whose twin sons, Bob Steele and Bill Bradenbury, star in the series. (Steele would go on to become a famous Western star.) Cryrus J. Williams served as producer. The "Bill and Bob" series followed the twins along thrilling adventures as they explored and hunted wild game. The films highlight animal hunting and trapping methods and underscore Bill and Bob's camaraderie, courage and discovery. This episode is fairly typical, with the boys making a campsite, using various tricks of the hunting trade (such as the use of anise oil to hide the human scent), methods of proper land use during tracking as well as trap fabrication and set up. The boys are shown as heroes for eliminating a "thieving" bobcat. Note: in the era the film was made, hunting was moving from being a necessity for individuals to being a regulated activity funded and organized by sportsmen. The overall belief was that hunting, especially of predators, was necessary to maintain abundant wildlife populations. Overhunting and rapid loss of habitats eventually forced numerous species to the brink of extinction. Hunters then began to serve as a powerful force behind the environmental movement. The film opens with credits (:14); released by Pathegrams and the copyright, passed by the National Board of Review (:23). Early film review boards used roman numerals for copyrights; MCMXXI indicates it was copyrighted in 1921. In the 1920’s the National Board of Review was transitioning from censorship to promotion of cinema as an art form. An opening note describes the bobcat (:30) highlighting the 1920’s mindset. Phrasing provides plausible cause for hunting the animal. Footage sweeps a mountainous region (1:03) indicated to be the bobcat’s domain. Bill; in a flat cap (1:33) and Bob (1:44) are introduced at their campsite. A third character; Rags (1:56) accompanies the twins. Bill inspects the drag type trap (2:05). A title card provides explanation for it’s use (2:14). They collect the last of twenty traps from the campsite (2:38) and head into the mountainous terrain (2:46) to set the traps into place. They select specific routes including a hillside trail (3:02) and a deep ravine (3:27). Bob uses gloves dipped in anise oil (3:16). Holes are dug for proper fit of the trap (3:47). Oil paper is wrapped around it in order to ensure a clean spring (4:25). The trap is covered with dirt (5:01) and the trail is narrowed forcing the animal to pass over the trap. The pair reunite in the woods (5:51). Rags delivers a false alarm (6:05) over a skunk (6:32). Bob gets blown back by the skunk’s spray (6:49). Bill sprints away from the stench (7:10). They search through leaves for indications of a trail (10:17) and sight the bobcat (10:29) slowed by the trap (10:29). They ready a rifle and nose (10:46). Bob gets hit by a blow from the bobcat (10:53). They get a nose around the animals head and legs (11:46) and hoist it up for the camera (12:41). A title card notes “the end of a jake day;” referring to 1920’s slang for fine or good day (13:12). Shots show many bobcat pelts collected after two weeks (13:34). The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is a far-right Indian paramilitary Hindu nationalist organization with close ties to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leader of the RSS, Mohan Bhagwat, held a rally at Madison Square Garden on Saturday to launch a global speaking tour marking the 100th anniversary of the RSS. The RSS’s “explicitly stated mission, its purpose, is to create a Hindu Rashtra, a Hindu nation — to take the India that is a secular and inclusive democracy and transform it into a country that is just for Hindus, where Muslims, Christians, Sikhs and other minorities are basically erased,” says Sunita Viswanath, co-founder of Hindus for Human Rights Action. ”RSS affiliates, these Hindu right-wing organizations, exist in growing numbers in the diaspora, especially in America.”

Amsterdam staat deze week in het teken van Fashion Week. Ontwerpster Tess van Zalinge presenteerde een bijzondere archiefshow ter ere van haar tienjarig jubileum. Voor deze show liet ze drie jonge talenten ieder hun eigen interpretatie geven aan haar archief. "Ik heb zelfs een traantje gelaten en kan mijn lach niet van mijn gezicht krijgen", vertelt Dirkje Lemmink na afloop. Lemmink was samen met Simone van Ommen en Evy Cornelie, een van de drie jonge talenten. Van Zalinge zelf is erg trots op de manier waarop de jonge talenten met haar archief aan de slag gingen. "Ze hebben bepaalde items uit het rek gepakt waarvan ik dacht: oh wow, die zou ik zelf nooit hebben gekozen. Het samenwerken daarin is superleuk en inspirerend." Juist die ruimte voor jonge ontwerpers is volgens Miluska van 't Lam, hoofdredacteur van Harper's Bazaar, kenmerkend voor de Amsterdamse modewereld. "Waar ik Amsterdam Fashion Week echt bekend om vind staan, is dat ze de jonge ontwerpers laat zien. Waar Kopenhagen bekendstaat om duurzaamheid, staat Amsterdam echt bekend om de jonge ontwerpers." Ook Van Zalinge vindt het belangrijk om de volgende generatie een podium te geven. "Ik heb tien jaar lang hard gewerkt om hier te staan. Des te mooier vind ik het om het om dat platform over te dragen aan young talents en hen enthousiast te maken om verder te gaan." Naast nieuw talent lijkt ook het silhouet in de mode te veranderen. Waar oversized blazers en wijde broeken de afgelopen jaren het straatbeeld domineerden, ziet Van 't Lam een nieuwe beweging ontstaan. "We gaan de oversized tijd achter ons laten. We gaan terug naar het vrouwelijke silhouet en ook de man gaat terug naar het tailored silhouet." En betekent dat dan ook de terugkeer van de skinny jeans?
