Elsa-vlechten, visgraatvlechten of invlechten: voor veel vaders is het een flinke uitdaging. Bij de workshop ‘Papa’s en Pony’s’ leren meisjesvaders hoe ze zelf de haren van hun dochters kunnen vlechten. “Als er iets was met het haar van mijn dochters, stuurde ik ze naar mama toe”, vertelt initiatiefnemer Faizi Nazir. “Ik ben heel betrokken als het gaat om mijn vaderschap, maar wat betreft haar kon ik dat niet zijn. Dus toen dacht ik: dit moet anders.” En dus organiseerde Faizi Nazir een vlechtworkshop waarbij hij vaders leert vlechten. In Engeland bestaat het initiatief ‘Pints and Ponytails’. Faizi liet zich hierdoor inspireren en besloot het concept naar Nederland te halen. Tijdens de workshop doet Nazir het vlechten eerst voor en daarna gaan vaders zelf aan de slag. Het vlechten valt niet iedere vader mee. “In het begin is het wel spannend. Waar moet je beginnen?”, vertelt een deelnemer. Ook de techniek blijkt soms lastig, maar het resultaat mag er zijn. “Voor mijn eerste vlecht ben ik best wel blij.” De vaders leren het niet alleen voor een mooi kapsel. “Het lijkt me heel leuk om een Elsa-vlecht te maken, of noem maar op. What's actually happening in France? We talked to our colleague Camille from ENTR's French team, who gave us an appraisal of the situation from on the ground in Paris. On Saturday 17 October protests across the country drew nearly 550,000 people according to the authorities, while organisers put the number at around 800,000. The school and university students have now been joined by unions and the Yellow Vest movement. What began as strikes against deteriorating conditions in the education system has since evolved into a nationwide wave of discontent over rising living costs and social inequality. The demonstrations have largely been peaceful, with some protesters singing and dancing on streets and squares. However, the weekend was also marked by serious unrest that overshadowed the actual demonstrations. Rioters set cars on fire and attacked businesses and public buildings. The police's tough response to the violence has prompted strong criticism. At least six people, including minors, have been seriously injured. Sebastian Roché, a researcher at the Sciences Po University, says that no other European country sees so many cases of protesters suffering severe injuries at the hands of the police. President Emmanuel Macron has imposed curfews in Paris, Marseille, Lille and other major cities. In Lyon, residents had to have a valid reason to be out in public places on Monday night. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has vowed to “restore order”. Further protests are planned for this coming Saturday. UNEF, France’s largest student union, says it intends to maintain pressure on the government over budget cuts in the education system. De gemeente onderzoekt de mogelijkheid om een verbod in de stad in te voeren op wegwerpverpakkingen. De gemeente heeft uitgezocht dat zo'n verbod op to-go-bekers en bakjes juridisch mogelijk is en wil nu bekijken welke vorm het verbod precies zou moeten krijgen. Een nieuwe statiegeldregeling is een van de opties die op tafel ligt. Het zwerfafval op straat is een doorn in het oog van Amsterdammers en de gemeente. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat 30 procent van het afval dat op straat ligt, bestaat uit verpakkingen die één keer worden gebruikt. Dat moet anders, zo zegt verantwoordelijk wethouder Lian Heinhuis. "Onze stad is te mooi om vies te zijn." Juridische ruimte Met het verbod op wegwerpverpakkingen wil de gemeente het probleem aan de voorkant aanpakken. "Ik zeg weleens dat het eigenlijk vegen is met de kraan open. Er komt dagelijks zo veel afval bij. Het opruimen en mensen bewust maken hiervan is niet genoeg." Via een juridisch onderzoeksbureau heeft de gemeente gekeken of het juridisch zou mogen dat een gemeente zo'n verbod instelt. Uit dat onderzoek blijkt dat het zou mogen. De gemeente moet goed onderbouwen waarom eerder genomen maatregelen niet hebben gewerkt en wat de effecten zijn van het verbod. Maar de weg ligt in juridische zin open voor een lokaal verbod. Herbruikbare beker en statiegeld Hoe het verbod precies vorm zou moeten krijgen, kan Heinhuis nog niet zeggen. "We hebben nu een eerste stap gezet. De komende tijd gaan we kijken hoe we kunnen leren van steden die zo'n verbod al hebben en hoe we dat in Amsterdam kunnen toepassen." Zo loopt er in Kopenhagen sinds oktober 2025 een proef met een retoursysteem voor herbruikbare to-go-verpakkingen en betalen klanten in Lissabon 50 cent statiegeld per beker en krijgen dat bij inlevering terug op hun pas of telefoon. Volgens Heinhuis is dat ook een optie voor in Amsterdam, maar de vraag rijst dan wel of een nieuwe statiegeldregeling de stad echt schoner houdt, of dat het een extra reden is voor statiegeldjagers om prullenbakken open te trekken. "Het gaat niet alleen om het statiegeldprincipe, maar veel meer over het hergebruik van dit soort verpakkingen. We moeten het als stad niet normaal vinden dat we één keer iets gebruiken en dat het dan in de prullenbak verdwijnt." Een andere optie waar de gemeente naar kijkt, zijn herbruikbare bekers en bakjes die je bij alle ondernemers kan inleveren voor een nieuwe. "Dus dat je met je koffiebeker niet terug hoeft naar die ene koffietent, maar dat je hem kan inleveren bij een andere zaak en weer een nieuwe krijgt." Toeristen Een punt waar het met statiegeld op blikjes en flesjes ook veel fout gaat, is het gedrag van de toeristen met dit soort regels. Ondanks het statiegeld gooien zij namelijk veelvuldig flesjes en blikjes in de prullenbakken. Hoe de wethouder het voor elkaar gaat krijgen dat toeristen hun statiegeldbekers netjes inleveren, weet ze nog niet helemaal. "Daarom vind ik het zo interessant dat er al twee Europese steden zijn waar veel toeristen komen die dit al hebben gedaan." De gemeente wil van de steden leren in het verdere onderzoek, "maar het is ook het lef hebben om dit als stad te doen", aldus Heinhuis. Wanneer het verbod er zou moeten komen, is ook nog niet duidelijk. "Het juridische onderzoek is echt de eerste stap." De 29-jarige Hajar is vermoedelijk om het leven gebracht in een gebouw aan de De Klencke in Buitenveldert. Dat meldt de politie, die daar sinds vanmiddag 14.00 uur uitgebreid onderzoek doet. De politie houdt nog een kleine slag om de arm: "Waar het misdrijf heeft plaatsgevonden, kan nog niet met zekerheid gezegd worden, maar op dit moment gaat de recherche ervan uit dat zij in dit pand in Buitenveldert om het leven is gekomen". Wat daarvoor de aanwijzingen zijn, is niet bekendgemaakt. Voor het gebouw staat een container van de Forensische Opsporing, de politieafdeling die misdrijven onderzoekt en sporen veiligstelt. Ook is een speurhond ingezet. Het gebouw is afgezet met een lint. Volgens Het Parool wordt het pand niet bewoond, maar zijn er bedrijfjes antikraak in gevestigd. Lichaam gevonden in koffer De 29-jarige Hajar werd op 4 oktober door een familielid als vermist opgegeven nadat ze diezelfde dag met een onbekende man was weggefietst van de RAI richting Buitenveldert, vlak bij de locatie waar vandaag wordt gezocht. Haar lichaam werd vrijdag aangetroffen in een koffer in het water aan de Amsteldijk in Zuid. Gisterochtend werd een 23-jarige man aangehouden op verdenking van betrokkenheid bij haar dood. Burgemeester Femke Halsema van Amsterdam gaf deze week het enige gepaste antwoord op de ophef in politiek Den Haag over haar besluit om niet in te grijpen toen pro-Hamasdemonstranten betoogden op de Dam: de wet staat het haar niet toe. Verder feliciteren we deze aflevering de premier met zijn aanstaande vaderschap, Yvon Jaspers met haar strijd tegen landbouwgif en Nederlandse ouderen met hun keuze om steeds langer door te werken. Maar er is ook weer genoeg om ons druk over te maken. Zo stelt het klimaatpanel van de Verenigde Naties dat de doelstelling van 1,5 graad opwarming al over een paar jaar wordt overschreden en verdiepte Sander zich naar aanleiding van de rellen in de rijksbegroting van Frankrijk. De onthutsende conclusie: zonder radicale ingrepen in de begroting is Frankrijk reddeloos verloren. En dat is ook voor de rest van Europa bijzonder slecht nieuws.

Klein recently spoke at the People’s AI Assembly, alongside other critics of the artificial intelligence industry, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and former chair of the Federal Trade Commission Lina Khan. “The resistance to AI is taking many forms, and it’s really a resistance to oligarch power, which is concentrated in the hands of these tech companies,” Klein tells Democracy Now! “After 50 years of outsourcing and hollowing out of public functions of the state, the very last stage is the outsourcing of thinking, of intelligence itself.” Taylor, a co-founder of the Debt Collective, warns that the “circular” debt financing of much of the AI economy is “a waste of resources that also endangers the public.” The AI buildout “is so intense, so frenetic and so redundant” that it risks causing a major economic crash akin to the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis, Taylor says. Veel van wat je op ADE gaat zien is gericht jongeren, maar in de Houthavens werd gisteren afgetrapt met een feestje dat ook voor ouderen bedoeld is. Met Leef Tijd wil de organisator jong én oud bij elkaar brengen. Naast dansen was het ook de bedoeling dat mensen met elkaar in gesprek gingen; ook over taboeonderwerpen zoals seks en intimiteit. Het is dinsdagmiddag en ADE is officieel nog niet begonnen, maar de dansvloer van DB55, aan de Danzigerbocht in de Houthavens, is al wel goed gevuld, met jonge én oude mensen dus. DJ Sarah Meester draait samen met haar vader muziek van Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston en Earth Wind & Fire. Oudere muziek die ook bij jonge mensen bekend in de oren klinkt.   Het feestje wordt georganiseerd door Jong Geleerd Oud Gedaan, dat vaker activiteiten organiseert om jongeren en ouderen samen te brengen.  Hoewel het dus een ADE-feest is, is het niet de bedoeling dat er alleen gedanst wordt. De stichting wil ook dat de verschillende generaties met elkaar gaan praten. Bij voorkeur over seks en intimiteit, omdat er volgens hen, zeker bij de oudere generatie nog een taboe op rust. "Veel van deze mensen zijn opgegroeid met seks als taboeonderwerp", zegt organisator Myonne Smid. "Of ze waren juist van de Dolle Mina Generatie. En ik denk dat jongeren veel van ouderen kunnen leren en andersom." "Ik heb bijvoorbeeld heel veel geleerd van mijn vriendin Thea. Die ik via de colleges die we geven heb leren kennen. Ik dacht van tevoren, ga ik het echt met haar over seks hebben? Maar ze was zo open daarover. Ze zei, joh, mijn man is al lang geleden overleden, maar gelukkig heb ik nog twee handen. Zó open was ze erover." Bereik Volgens Smid is het belangrijk dat ouderen erover praten. "Intimiteit verdwijnt niet na je zeventigste, maar in verpleeghuizen wordt, je bijna niet meer aangeraakt. Alleen bij het wassen, En dat is dan je enige stukje intimiteit. En dat terwijl intimiteit zó belangrijk is. Het bestaat ook uit gezien worden, sociaal contact, of een hand die je uitnodigt om naar de dansvloer te komen." Tegelijkertijd denkt Smid dat de ouderen en jongeren die hier naartoe komen waarschijnlijk meer open staan voor het praten over seks dan de mensen die hier niet naartoe komen. Ook die wil ze uiteindelijk bereiken, onder meer met behulp van wijkorganisaties. "De mensen bereiken voor wie het echt nodig is, dat is echt lastig. Daarvoor heb je ook vertrouwen nodig. Hier zijn vooral mensen die al over het thema willen praten. Een volgende stap zou zijn om ook de mensen te bereiken voor wie dit een taboe is." Smid benadrukt dat mensen het natuurlijk ook over andere dingen mogen hebben.
