De Verenigde Arabische Emiraten stappen vrijdag uit oliekartel OPEC. Dat samenwerkingsverband tussen olieproducerende landen stuurt al meer dan zestig jaar de olieprijzen. Maar de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten heeft bestaande frustraties binnen het kartel op scherp gezet. Het samenwerkingsverband werkt als een kartel omdat de leden afspraken maken hoeveel olie ze jaarlijks produceren en exporteren. Daarmee houden ze het aanbod laag op de oliemarkt, waardoor de prijs hoog blijft. Het OPEC produceert ongeveer een derde van de wereldproductie voor olie.

Het Openbaar Ministerie (OM) verdenkt de 52-jarige Clyde S. uit Amsterdam van poging tot moord voor het neerleggen van mottenballen in een kast met kinderboeken in de OBA in De Hallen. Dat bleek vandaag tijdens een eerste inleidende zitting. De man heeft bekend dat hij de mottenballen in de boekenkast in de bibliotheek heeft gelegd. De man zit nog altijd vast sinds hij op basis van camerabeelden op 22 januari in zijn woning werd aangehouden. In zijn huis trof de politie bij een foto van zijn kinderen ook enkele mottenballen aan. Twee dagen voor zijn aanhouding had de politie een melding gekregen over een man die mottenballen in de kinderboekenhoek van de bibliotheek had neergelegd. Mottenballen zijn kleine witte bolletjes die vroeger werden gebruikt om motten te bestrijden. Tegenwoordig zijn ze verboden, omdat ze giftig kunnen zijn. Ze lijken qua uiterlijk op snoepjes, waardoor volgens het OM het risico groot is dat kinderen ze opeten. 'Opzettelijke actie' De man zou volgens de officier van justitie in de periode van 13 november vorig jaar tot 20 januari dit jaar door de actie opzettelijk geprobeerd hebben kinderen van het leven te beroven. In een verklaring zegt de verdachte dat hij de mottenballen in de bibliotheek neerlegde om 'kwade geesten weg te jagen en zoveel mogelijk mensen te helpen'. Agenten vonden na de melding op 20 januari twee mottenballen in een boekenkast voor kinderboeken waar een sterk chemische geur vanaf kwam. Uit onderzoek van het Nederlands Forensisch Instituut (NFI) blijkt dat de giftige stof die in de mottenballen gevonden werd niet heel hoog was. Voor zover bekend zijn er geen kinderen geweest die de balletjes hebben opgegeten. Goede bedoelingen De advocaat van verdachte Clyde S. benadrukte vandaag in de rechtbank dat zijn cliënt enkel uit 'goede bedoelingen' handelde. S. was vanwege een ziekte uitbehandeld en zou in 2022 in zijn geboorteland Suriname mottenballen hebben gebruikt om kwade geesten uit zijn lichaam te verdrijven. Terug in Nederland zou hij dit vaker hebben gedaan als hij zich niet goed voelde. Het neerleggen van de mottenballen in de bibliotheek in De Hallen zou in een opwelling zijn gebeurd, aldus de advocaat van S. Van voorbedachten rade is volgens de raadsman dan ook geen sprake. S. zou volgens zijn advocaat wel vaker op straat mottenballen hebben gegeven aan mensen als het slecht met ze ging. Het onderzoek naar de zaak is volgens het OM afgerond. Volgens de officier van justitie wordt nu alleen nog gewacht op een persoonlijkheidsonderzoek naar de man. De man blijft voorlopig nog vastzitten. At the heart of the Brennan Monorail were two powerful gyroscopes, spinning at high speed to keep the train balanced on a single rail. A gyroscope resists changes to its orientation, but when a force is applied, it doesn’t simply tip - it responds through precession, shifting at right angles to the force. Louis Brennan used this behavior in a clever way. The monorail’s twin gyros were set up to precess in opposite directions. So when one reacted to a disturbance, the other countered it, canceling out unwanted motion and keeping the system stable. By pairing them like this, Brennan created a self-correcting balance system - one that could keep an entire train upright with no need for a wide track.

In the 1860s, leprosy (aka Hansen's Disease) was a widespread and mysterious disease, affecting many fishermen and farmers in Norway. Dr. Hans Henrik Arow Hansen, assigned as an assistant physician at a leprosy hospital, was determined to find the cause, challenging the widely held belief that the disease was hereditary. He studied patients' living conditions, conducted research, and questioned whether leprosy might be contagious. After years of study, in 1873, Hansen discovered the presence of rod-shaped bacteria in infected tissues, identifying them as the cause of leprosy. By the end of the century, leprosy had been nearly eradicated in Scandinavian countries, marking a significant milestone in medical history. 00:00: mysterious ancient disease spreads in the north, affecting mostly fishermen and farmers. Currently, access to Vienna’s municipal housing is primarily available to people with an urgent housing need who fall below the defined income limits, or to individuals who have been registered with their principal residence in Vienna for a certain period of time. In general, all adults with Austrian citizenship are also eligible to apply for these apartments. We asked the City of Vienna why it decided to introduce this points-based system. The city responded that the “bonus points are intended to better reflect individual life situations” and that housing allocation should no longer be based solely on immediate housing need. In March 2026, the project entered a pilot phase, which is scheduled to run until the end of May. The draft amendment to the law is currently open for public consultation, and the new law is expected to come into force on September 1. De verdachte van de moord op de 17-jarige Lisa uit Abcoude wordt langer opgenomen in het Pieter Baan Centrum voor zijn observatie. Dat werd vandaag bekendgemaakt op een derde inleidende zitting. De man wordt naast de moord op Lisa ook verdachte van een gewelddadige verkrachting en een poging tot verkrachting aan de Weesperzijde. Vandaag werd bekend dat de strafzaak pas in januari 2027 inhoudelijk van start gaat. Tijdens de zitting in de zaak tegen Chris Jude is besloten dat de verdachte zeven weken langer in het Pieter Baan Centrum wordt opgenomen. Alle partijen, inclusief de verdachte, stemde daarmee in: "Ik vind het belangrijk dat die observatie plaatsvindt. Dus ik vind het goed dat ik daar langer blijf", zei Jude. De man bekende tijdens een vorige zitting schuldig te zijn aan de moord op de 17-jarige Lisa op 20 augustus vorig jaar in Duivendrecht. Ook bekende hij schuld aan een gewelddadige verkrachting en poging tot verkrachting aan de Weesperzijde. Einddossier Sinds de vorige zitting is een broer van de verdachte gehoord. Het Openbaar Ministerie verwacht dat het einddossier over enkele weken is afgerond, toch laat de inhoudelijke behandeling van de strafzaak nog even op zich wachten. In januari 2027 zijn daarvoor drie dagen gepland. Om een goed beeld te krijgen van de verdachte wil de rechtbank alle audiovisuele bestanden van verhoren van Chris Jude krijgen. De contactmomenten op de inleidende zitting zijn daar volgens de rechtbank te kort voor. Tijdens de zitting vandaag werd bekend dat advocaat Emile van Reydt de relevante stukken in wil zien rond de 1700 politiemedewerkers die in de systemen hebben gezocht naar informatie over de moord op Lisa. "De voorliggende vraag is of deze kwestie in potentie relevantie heeft voor de beoordeling van deze strafzaak. De vraag is, raakt deze kennisname in potentie de beantwoording van de vragen. En de vraag stellen is hem beantwoorden, want die relevantie is er", aldus van Reydt. De moord op Lisa Lisa werd in de nacht van 20 augustus om 04.00 uur 's nachts achtervolgd bij de Holterbergweg en met messteken om het leven bracht. Lisa had vlak daarvoor al 112 gebeld omdat zij was aangevallen door een man op een fiets. Jude wordt hiernaast ook verdacht van twee andere misdrijven. Vijf dagen eerder, op 15 augustus, werd een 30-jarige vrouw aangevallen op het fietspad aan de Weesperzijde. Zij werd in het gezicht geslagen, waarbij haar kaak brak, en een uur lang verkracht. Op 10 augustus vond op diezelfde Weesperzijde een poging tot verkrachting en zware mishandeling plaats. Die vrouw kon dankzij omstanders ontsnappen. Chris Jude Chris Jude (23) heeft de Nigeriaanse nationaliteit en verbleef op het AZC aan de Hogehilweg in Zuidoost. In de loop van het onderzoek bleek dat hij meerdere malen loog over zijn achtergrond: waar hij aanvankelijk verklaarde niets van de feiten te herinneren, gaf hij later toe dat dit niet klopte. Ook zijn verhaal dat hij opgroeide in weeshuizen en geen contact heeft met zijn familie, bleek onjuist. “Struikelstenen”, de messing naamplaatjes in onze straten. Als je erop let, zie je ze overal in de stad. Je vindt ze op adressen waar Amsterdammers woonden die zijn gedeporteerd en in de Tweede Wereldoorlog in concentratiekampen zijn vermoord. Op elke steen staat een naam, een geboortedatum en geboorteplek. Maar ook de plek en datum waarop deze persoon is vermoord. Ze geven de slachtoffers letterlijk een naam, zodat we ze niet vergeten. Deze “Stolpersteine”, van de gelijknamige stichting @stolpersteine, liggen niet alleen in onze stad, maar door heel Europa. Ze houden de herinnering levend aan de talloze mensen die rond en tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn vermoord door het Naziregime. Alle Stolpersteine die in de Benelux liggen, worden gemaakt in onze binnenstad, bij de @stolpersteine_werkplaats. Alles handmatig, steen voor steen, letter voor letter. Met zorg en toewijding wordt hiermee aandacht geschonken aan de slachtoffers van de holocaust. Michael Heemskerk (58), legt zijn ziel en zaligheid in dit project. Inmiddels is hij coördinator van team Stolpersteine Benelux, maar hij raakte betrokken bij de organisatie toen hij zelf een aanvraag deed voor een steen voor zijn vermoorde overgrootmoeder. Omdat er een tekort aan vrijwilligers was, bood Michael aan om aan de slag te gaan. -- Wij zijn FC Centrum, een FanClub voor onze oude binnenstad. Bewoners van de wijk Buikslotermeer in Noord reageren overwegend positief op het vorige week ingestelde cameratoezicht op Breedveld. Veel bewoners die we spreken vinden dat de nachtelijke overlast verminderd is. In de wijk werd afgelopen weken veelvuldig brand gesticht, ook werden hulpverleners belaagd. De camera's staan er sinds afgelopen vrijdag. "Ik vind het uitstekend, dat hadden ze veel eerder moeten doen", zegt een bewoner. "Het is niet houdbaar. De gewone bejaarden, daar behoor ik ook toe, die voelen zich niet veilig hier." Ruzie Bewoners die niet in beeld willen, zeggen tegen AT5 dat het soms om kinderen van twaalf jaar oud gaat die vlak bij Breedveld wonen. "Ze maken zelf rotzooi, dan komen de hulpdiensten en gaan ze daar ruzie mee zoeken", legt een andere bewoner uit. Zo werden hulpverleners beledigd en bekogeld met stenen, plantenbakken en eieren. Straten werden geblokkeerd met fietsen, stenen, pallets en winkelwagens. Een van de bewoners zegt dat de vlammen soms boven lantaarnpalen uit kwamen en dat er pas nog een accu in brand werd gestoken. Meerdere omwonenden van Breedveld zeggen in de nachten vaak harde knallen te hebben gehoord. Verplaatst "Ik kan eindelijk weer goed slapen", vertelt een vrouw over de gevolgen van de camera's. Sommige bewoners zeggen wel dat de jongeren zich verplaatst hebben naar het nabijgelegen Buikslotermeerplein, waar overigens al camera's hingen. Het is daarmee volgens een van hen wel de vraag of de camera's op Breedveld afschrikwekkend blijven. Ook zeggen een paar bewoners, die zelf geen last van de incidenten hadden, dat ze het cameratoezicht een te zwaar middel vinden.
