Terwijl buiten studenten demonstreren tegen de Vietnamoorlog en minister van Defensie Robert McNamara stilletjes zijn afscheid voorbereidt, buigt een commissie van statistici zich over de internationale boekhoudregels. Geen camera's, geen voorpagina's. Toch wordt hier een beslissing genomen die de wereld ingrijpend zal vormen, zo betoogt regisseur Martijn Kieft in dit video-essay. De inkomsten van banken en financiële instellingen gaan voortaan meetellen in de berekening van het Bruto Nationaal Product. Het was een radicale breuk. Eeuwenlang gold rente vragen als zondig, de Bijbel is er ondubbelzinnig over. Nu werd geld verdienen met geld van de ene op de andere dag een productieve bijdrage aan de economie. Opeens nam de president de telefoon op als een bankdirecteur belde. Ironisch genoeg maakte McNamara zelf de gevaren van blind cijfervertrouwen al pijnlijk zichtbaar. In Vietnam stuurde hij de oorlog aan op basis van kwantificeerbare data: aantallen gedode tegenstanders, hoeveelheden afgeworpen napalmbommen. Alles wat niet direct meetbaar was, het sentiment onder de bevolking, de moraal van de troepen, telde niet mee. Het resultaat was een compleet vertekend beeld van de werkelijkheid. De psycholoog Daniel Yankelovich doopte het later de McNamara Fallacy: uitgaan van data en daarmee vergeten dat er nog een wereld daarbuiten is. De denkfout is er nog steeds. Ze zit in de algoritmes die ons gedrag sturen, in de content die we consumeren, in de AI die nu wordt ontworpen. The UAE has long disagreed with Saudi Arabia over oil production quotas and says it is leaving the group to focus on "national interests" and increase its production capacity. "The fact that the UAE has pulled out means that this cartel will have less ability to be able to push up the price when it wants," says Akshat Rathi, senior climate reporter at Bloomberg News. "We've already seen some of it not working, because there are all these other producers, like the U.S.A., but also places like Guyana, that are increasing their production a lot." Meanwhile, Rathi adds that as countries across the globe brace for the ripple effects of the energy shocks created by the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, transitions to clean energy could be accelerated. "In the past, when countries were faced with this kind of energy shock, they had options that were quite limited," says Rathi. But now countries can "try and deploy as much renewables so that they can build energy supply at home." De theatervoorstelling De Jodenverraadsters vertelt het waargebeurde verhaal van twee Joodse vrouwen, Ans van Dijk en Rosa Rozendaal. Ze werden tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog geronseld door het beruchte Bureau Joodsche Zaken en collaboreerden met de Duitse bezetter. De Jodenverraadsters is een van de stukken die dit jaar te zien is in het kader van Theater Na de Dam. Dat zijn voorstellingen rondom de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het stuk werd geschreven door de in 2023 overleden toneelregisseur Helmert Woudenberg. Hij worstelde zijn hele leven met het feit dat zijn eigen familie fout was in de oorlog. "Helmert wilde de dingen gewoon laten zien zoals ze zijn", zegt regisseur Tessa Lamberts van theatergroep Troost, als we langsgaan bij een repetitie. Keuze tussen de dood en collaboreren Maartje Allebes-van Arkel speelt een van de twee hoofdrollen. Haar personage Ans van Dijk krijgt de keuze tussen de dood of het verraden van andere Joden, waar ze voor betaald krijgt. Van Dijk kiest voor het laatste. Ze zou in totaal 145 mensen, voornamelijk Joodse onderduikers, verraden aan de Duitse bezetter. Een oordeel over het handelen van Van Dijk en de anderen in de voorstelling ligt al snel klaar, snapt ook Allebes-van Arkel. "Maar ik wil dat het publiek verder nadenkt. Dus: hoe zat de situatie voor die mensen in elkaar? En: wat zou ik doen?" De theatergroep speelt de voorstelling vier keer. Dat gebeurt van vrijdag 1 mei tot en met maandag 4 mei, telkens in Het Amsterdams Theaterhuis in West. Op 28 april 2026, de dag na Koningsdag, hebben we een handje geholpen het centrum weer iéts netter te maken. Tijdens Koningsdag kleurt het centrum van Amsterdam oranje, maar als iedereen naar huis gaat blijft er ook een hoop troep achter. De Gemeente Amsterdam doet hard haar best die nacht alles op te ruimen, maar er blijft altijd wel wat liggen. Dus dachten we: wat nou als wij met z’n allen even een handje helpen met opruimen? En dat zijn we gaan organiseren samen met Heineken, waarbij we hulp kregen van Thuisbezorgd, STËLZ, Coca-Cola en een heleboel Amsterdammers! Met muziek, grijpers en vuilniszakken zijn we met vier verschillende stoeten – al feestend - door de straten van Amsterdam getrokken om een steentje bij te dragen aan de stadsreiniging. We zijn gezellig met z'n allen geëindigd in de Chicago Social Club. Ondanks de katers en bijzondere hoeveelheid troep, was het een groot succes. Heel erg bedankt aan iedereen die heeft meegeholpen, en natuurlijk HULDE voor alle helden van de Gemeente Amsterdam die de nacht na Koningsnacht al hard aan het werk waren om alle troep op te ruimen. Ergens in een kelder van een pand op de drukke Admiraal de Ruijterweg runt Jurian Wijnheijmer een laboratorium vol met paddenstoelen. Vanuit het lab wil de microbioloog de kennis over paddenstoelen verspreiden. Jarenlang kweekte Jurian paddenstoelen vanuit huis, totdat hij een belletje kreeg van Guus Rodermans, de eigenaar van het restaurant boven de kelder. Hij kreeg de kans om het groter aan te pakken en vanuit zijn kelder paddenstoelen te kweken. Tot grote vreugde, want hij is fan van paddenstoelen. "Het is heel bijzonder. Het is geen dier, geen plant. Het is echt iets anders", zegt hij. "Het is inderdaad net kunst. De natuur is de mooiste kunstenaar van iedereen", vertelt hij trots, terwijl hij naar zijn paddenstoelen kijkt. Op het eerste gezicht voldoet het de ruimte aan alle kenmerken van een drugslab. Jurian moet lachen als we hem dat voorleggen. "Het is niet de eerste keer dat ik dat hoor", zegt hij. "Mensen associëren vaak een lab met drugs." De paddenstoelen worden gekweekt in een speciale tent, waarna ze daarna naar een ruimte gaan waar ze heel veel zuurstof krijgen. Eenmaal volgroeid worden ze geoogst. En sommige zijn dan ook weer te bestellen, boven in het restaurant. In zekere zin is Jurian dan ook de vader van de paddenstoelen. "Ja, zo zie ik het ook. Grote bedrijven als H&M weigeren het nog te gebruiken wegens de vermeende dwangarbeid, die volgens China zelf berust op 'buitenlandse leugens'. Nieuwsuur vroeg D66-minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma (Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingssamenwerking) waarom er nog geen toezichthouder is aangesteld. "Dat is een goede vraag", zegt hij.
