Europol heeft in het afgelopen jaar bijna driehonderd aanhoudingen verricht in verband met het ronselen van jongeren voor het plegen van geweldsmisdrijven. Het ronselen gebeurt veelal via sociale media zoals Snapchat en Telegram. “Ronselaars zitten in dezelfde chatgroepen als jongeren en plaatsen advertenties in aantrekkelijke taal zodat zo'n jongen denkt: voor een paar centen zou ik dit kunnen doen”, zegt Andy Kraag, verantwoordelijk voor de aanpak van zware georganiseerde misdaad bij Europol. Roel Koopman is pas drieëntwintig en heeft nu al zijn droombaan te pakken: als dixi-chauffeur leegt hij elke dag volle dixies. De dag na Koningsdag vindt hij een gouden klus. De mooiste dag van het jaar zelfs. Dat sommige mensen neerkijken op zijn werk kan hij niet begrijpen: "Iedereen moet toch doen waar je blij van wordt?" Op de dag van zijn achttiende verjaardag zit Roel Koopman voor het eerst op zijn eigen wagen. "Die dag vergeet ik nooit meer. Geweldig was dat", vertelt hij. Sinds Roel een jochie van zes is, gaat hij af en toe met zijn vader mee die ook dixi-chauffeur is. Elke schoolvakantie helpt hij mee. Prachtig vindt 'ie het.  Vandaag staat hij met een grote glimlach bij een aantal dixi's naast de Stopera. De glimlach wordt een beetje groter als ze goed vol zitten, want daar komt hij voor. Met een lange slang zuigt hij alles zo zijn auto in. Aan de geur is hij inmiddels gewend. "Het is toch mooi. Je bent lekker buiten, ziet de hele dag nieuwe mensen. En je kan altijd zwaaien naar collega's die langsrijden." Als de dixi's geleegd zijn, laadt hij ze op de wagen en rijdt naar het Vondelpark. Dat is een van de drie punten in de stad waar de hele inhoud geleegd wordt. "2400 liter zeik, schijt en de hele rotzooi gaan daar in. En daarna rijdt mijn wagen weer een stuk lichter." Iets negatiefs aan zijn vak kan hij niet echt bedenken. "Ik heb nagenoeg niks te klagen. Kijk hoe mooi die auto erbij staat. Enkele honderdduizenden mensen hebben gisteren in de stad de verjaardag van de koning gevierd en om die drukte te beteugelen, kwam de gemeente dit jaar met strengere regels. Maar hoe effectief was dat nieuwe beleid volgens bewoners? AT5 ging de stad in om de stemming over het verloop van de dag te peilen. En wat blijkt: de meningen lopen uiteen. Burgemeester Halsema introduceerde onder meer een verbod op straatfeestjes en de illegale verkoop van alcohol. Ook mochten boten maximaal 12 passagiers vervoeren. Zelf zegt de gemeente dat het daardoor minder druk en beter beheersbaar was in de stad, ten opzichte van eerdere edities. Vanuit de Jordaan klinken vandaag wisselende geluiden over het verloop van de dag. Zo noemt een vrouw deze Koningsdag anders dan andere jaren, omdat het 'schuifelen door de straatjes' later op de dag begon. Ook een bewoonster van het Madelievenplein is positief: "Het was eigenlijk best wel goed gereguleerd." Een andere Jordanees: "Voorgaande jaren was het drukker, lag er meer troep en waren er veel meer wildplassers." "Geen handhaver gezien" Andere wijkgenoten zijn minder positief. "Het was gewoon hartstikke druk. Ik woon hierboven en het zag er gewoon exact hetzelfde uit." Een ander: "Ik heb geen handhaver gezien." Ook sommige bewoners aan de Amstel waren niet te spreken over de effectiviteit van de nieuwe regels: de problemen verplaatsten zich volgens hen juist. Een vrouwelijke bewoner van de Amsteldijk: "Het was gister gekkenhuis: heel veel mensen kwamen van boten, hadden geen toiletvoorziening en liepen de tuinen in om te plassen." This was released by Starlake Films of Indiana, and was produced by rail fans E.L. Sarber and H.C. Trowe in 1976. The footage was likely shot in the early 1960s, shortly before the locomotives were retired. The Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway hauled heavy iron ore in Minnesota. The DM&IR operated long trains of ore cars, requiring maximum power. The "Missabe Giant" locomotives were based upon ten 2-8-8-2s that Baldwin had built in the 1930s for the Western Pacific RR. The need for a larger, coal-burning firebox and a longer, all-weather cab led to the use of a four-wheel trailing truck, giving them the "Yellowstone" wheel arrangement. They were the most powerful Yellowstones built, producing 140,000 lbf (620 kN) of tractive effort, and had the most weight on drivers so that they were less prone to slipping. Eight locomotives (class M-3) were built by Baldwin in 1941. The Yellowstones met or exceeded the DM&IR specifications, so 10 more were ordered (class M-4). The second batch was completed in late 1943 after the Missabe's seasonal downturn in ore traffic, so some of the new M-4s were leased to and delivered directly to the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. DM&IRs were the only Yellowstones to have a high-capacity pedestal or centipede tender, and had roller bearings on all axles. Some of the locomotives had a cylindrical Elesco feedwater heater ahead of the smoke stack, while others had a Worthington unit with its rectangular box in the same location. Only one Yellowstone was retired before dieselization took place on the Missabe; No. 237 was sold for scrap after a wreck. The rest of the 2-8-8-4s were retired between 1958 and 1963 as diesel locomotives took over. Of the eighteen built, three survive and are on display in Minnesota: No. 225 at Proctor, No. 227 at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth and No. 229 at Two Harbors. In 2022, an Ipsos study reported that optimism for the future was at a ten-year low. This is perhaps unsurprising given the media’s portrayal of the future is riddled with AI dystopia, climate disaster and economic decline. More importantly, Enlightenment visions of knowledge, progress, and equality have stagnated and been replaced by post-truth politics and global conflict. Even the promise of prosperity, which fuelled optimism for millennia, is questioned and challenged. Should we give up on the notion that the future will be better than the past? Are we right to regard the pursuit of truth and progress as flawed? The initiative was launched in the final hours of the COP30 conference held in Belém, Brazil, last year, as fossil-fuel producing countries led by Saudi Arabia and Russia blocked the formal commitments sought by more ambitious nations. “This gathering in Santa Marta is about breaking the deadlock, creating a space where mission is not held hostage, and where real pathways to phase out fossil fuels can be discussed openly and honestly,” says South African activist Kumi Naidoo, president of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative. Lewis takes over as the NDP has only five seats in Parliament and just as Prime Minister Mark Carney secured a majority for his Liberal government following three special elections in April. Lewis acknowledges that “the NDP has a lot of rebuilding to do,” but says there is “wide-open political space” in Canada for a populist left-wing agenda. “I think young people in particular are really responding to a vision where life just doesn’t have to be so grindingly unfair,” Lewis says. “We need nonmarket solutions to a time of market failure.” Lewis is a longtime activist and filmmaker whose late father Stephen Lewis led the Ontario NDP in the 1970s.
