New York City Councilmember Chi Ossé was one of four people arrested on Wednesday in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn after gathering in support of Carmella Charrington, a homeowner fighting eviction from her longtime family home.

Prullenbakken die makkelijk zelf sluiten en een speciaal vakje voor blikjes en flesjes hebben. Om de afvaloverlast te verminderen, wil de gemeente 8000 van de 11.000 prullenbakken vervangen. Voor de kosten, zo'n 8 miljoen euro, willen ze alleen niet opdraaien. Dat moet statiegeldbedrijf Verpact doen, aldus wethouder Hester van Buren (Afval en Reiniging). Sinds de invoering van statiegeld op kleine flesjes en blikjes is er in de binnenstad veel meer afvaloverlast. De gemeente zegt daar veel geld aan kwijt te zijn. Zo'n 11 miljoen euro per jaar. "Dat geven we uit aan extra veegploegen. Het duurt namelijk langer voordat alles is opgeruimd." Daar komt de 8 miljoen euro voor de eventuele nieuwe prullenbakken bij. De gemeente hoopt dat het nieuwe ontwerp eraan bijdraagt dat de overlast minder wordt. Maar zelf wil de gemeente dus niet voor de prullenbakken betalen. Ze vinden dat Verpact dat moet doen. Verpact wil tot nu toe alleen 1 miljoen euro bijdragen. Het bedrijf heeft van het Rijk de opdracht gekregen om de verwerking van statiegeldverpakkingen op zich te nemen. Ze moeten ervoor zorgen dat 90 procent van de verpakkingen weer teruggebracht wordt. Maar dat doel wordt al jaar na jaar niet gehaald. Omdat veel statiegeld daardoor niet uitgekeerd wordt, heeft het bedrijf honderden miljoenen euro's in kas. 'We geven al geld' Verpact zegt in een reactie dat ze al 9,4 miljoen euro aan Amsterdam geven. Een deel van dat geld, 4,5 miljoen euro, is voor het opruimen van wegwerpplastics. Verpact benadrukt dat 15 procent van hun landelijke budget hiervoor naar Amsterdam gaat; 4 miljoen euro gaat naar het inzamelen van afval. "Dit is een contractuele afspraak die Verpact met alle gemeenten heeft", zegt een woordvoerder van het bedrijf. Van Buren vindt dat Amsterdam wel wat meer steun verdient, omdat de afvaloverlast hier groter is dan op andere plekken in Nederland. "We hebben ook 20 miljoen bezoekers per jaar die niet weten dat je statiegeld kunt inleveren. En er komen hier uit heel Europa mensen die de prullenbakken leeghalen. Wij vinden niet dat de Amsterdammers daarvoor op moeten draaien." Omdat Verpact 1 miljoen euro wil bijdragen, komen er in eerste instantie 1000 prullenbakken. Wel is het de bedoeling dat het er uiteindelijk dus 8000 worden. De gemeente hoopt nog altijd dat Verpact dat gaat betalen. Of de gemeente anders zelf opdraait, is aan een volgend college, zegt een woordvoerder van de gemeente. Reactie Hester Klein Lankhorst, CEO Verpact: "Verpact draagt met een jaarlijkse vergoeding van 9,4 miljoen euro - zoals wettelijk voorgeschreven – bij aan het opruimen en inzamelen van verpakkingsafval in de stad Amsterdam. Daarbovenop investeerde Verpact de afgelopen twee jaar fors in de uitbreiding van innamecapaciteit voor statiegeldverpakkingen én oplossingen rondom de opengebroken prullenbakken in Amsterdam." "Verpact heeft de kosten voor het ontwikkeltraject voor een nieuwe prullenbak voor de gemeente betaald en betaalt de eerste 200 prullenbakken ten bate van een praktijktest die vanaf nu in kan gaan. We vinden het belangrijk om de uitkomsten hiervan goed te monitoren. Verpact sluit niet de ogen voor het issue en denkt en werkt graag mee aan een oplossing." "Verpact heeft dan ook bij gemeente Amsterdam aangegeven eenmalig extra middelen vrij te willen maken voor een goed gezamenlijk plan om de problematiek in de stad aan te pakken. The river Hunte is among Germany’s best kept secrets and one of its most diverse natural habitats. Documentary filmmakers Svenja and Ralph Schieke spent two years following the river and its wild inhabitants. Using drones, slow-motion cameras and time-lapse photography, the result is a spectacular portrait of the landscape of northwest Germany. Beginning in hills and mountains, the river feeds into the region’s second largest lake, flows through sandy plains, moors and heaths, and ends its journey some 200 kilometres later close to the North Sea. Salamander larvae and sea trout swim in its waters, while its banks are home to wolves, brown hare and nutria. Charrington and local housing advocates say the sale of her property to investors in 2024 was a form of "deed theft," a criminal practice where predatory speculators use forgery, deceit or fraud to illegally transfer ownership of properties, without the knowledge or full understanding of rightful owners. "In my soul, I could not let that take place. I could not see a family, a Black family within Bed-Stuy, removed from a home," says New York City Councilmember Chi Ossé, one of those arrested during the protest. He says his district has seen rapid gentrification and elderly Black homeowners have been repeatedly targeted by deed theft. Ossé is calling for a moratorium on evictions in cases where deed theft is suspected. Khalil and her colleague, photographer Zeinab Faraj, were reporting from southern Lebanon when an Israeli drone struck a car near them, killing two civilians. Khalil and Faraj sought shelter in a nearby building, but then Israel struck that building, as well. Emergency and medical workers rescued Faraj but came under fire before they could rescue Khalil, and were prevented by the Israeli military from returning for over six hours. Sinds 2021 is online gokken legaal in Nederland en mogen online casino’s reclame maken. Bekende campagnes met rolmodellen, zoals bekende Nederlanders, waren zichtbaar op televisie en online. Om jongeren beter te beschermen tegen gokverslaving werd het beleid kort na de legalisering aangescherpt. Zo kwam er een verbod op het inzetten van rolmodellen in gokreclame en mogen gokbedrijven zich niet richten op jongeren onder de 24 jaar. Toch komen jongeren nog steeds veelvuldig in aanraking met online gokken via sociale media. Op platforms als YouTube en Twitch streamen influencers langdurig hun sessies met online casino spellen, zoals roulette, blackjack en digitale gokkasten. Daarbij roepen zij kijkers regelmatig op om zelf mee te spelen. Voor kijkers is het vaak onduidelijk of er sprake is van reclame of entertainment. Uit onderzoek van Zembla blijkt dat meer dan de helft van de legale online gokbedrijven samenwerkingen heeft gehad met influencers die online gokken promoten. Volgens de Kansspelautoriteit zijn dergelijke deals in strijd met de reclameregels, omdat influencers worden gezien als rolmodellen. Sinds 2022 is het verboden om rolmodellen in te zetten bij gokreclames. De toezichthouder heeft gokbedrijven opgedragen deze samenwerkingen te beëindigen. Een van de geïnterviewde influencers, actief onder de naam NederGaming, vertelt dat hij inkomsten genereert via doorverwijzingen naar online casino’s. Wanneer kijkers zich via zijn website aanmelden bij een gokplatform, ontvangt hij een vergoeding of een percentage van het verlies van spelers. Dit verdienmodel rondom online gokken roept vragen op over transparantie en de mogelijke invloed op kijkers. Zembla onderzocht de werkwijze van 29 legale gokbedrijven, sprak met betrokkenen en analyseerde online platforms zoals YouTube en Twitch. Daaruit blijkt dat samenwerkingen met zogenoemde gokstreamers op grote schaal voorkomen of recent hebben plaatsgevonden. Ook specifieke gevallen komen aan bod, zoals een samenwerking tussen een gokbedrijf en een influencer die bekend is bij een jong publiek via gamingcontent. Deskundigen op het gebied van verslavingszorg noemen de bevindingen zorgwekkend en wijzen op de risico’s van gokverslaving bij jongeren en jongvolwassenen. Zij stellen dat influencers een groot bereik hebben onder deze groepen en dat de bescherming tegen online gokken in de praktijk tekortschiet. De gokindustrie stelt dat het rolmodellenverbod niet is overtreden en maakt onderscheid tussen samenwerkingen met influencers zelf en met hun websites. Volgens branchevertegenwoordigers gaat het om verschillende vormen van media. Critici betwisten dit en stellen dat het effect op kijkers hetzelfde blijft, ongeacht de vorm van de samenwerking. De Kansspelautoriteit geeft aan niet in te gaan op individuele gevallen, maar stelt dat samenwerkingen met platforms van influencers in algemene zin ook onder het verbod op gokreclame kunnen vallen. Sinds 1 april wordt hier actief op gehandhaafd. Nog een paar nachten slapen en dan is het zover: Koningsdag. Voor veel Amsterdammers een feest om naar uit te kijken, al houden anderen hun hart vast. Honderdduizenden bezoekers trekken naar de stad. In de Jordaan zijn de meningen verdeeld over de aankomende Koningsdag. De gemeente heeft meerdere nieuwe maatregelen genomen rondom Koningsdag. Zo wordt de handhaving van illegale alcoholverkoop aangescherpt. Ook worden illegale (straat)feesten niet meer gedoogd. De gemeente hoopt hierdoor het 'alles-kan-en-alles-mag-imago' te doorbreken. Het is zelfs zo druk de afgelopen jaren dat tante Corrie, groot fan van Koningsdag, haar café sluit. "We vinden het eigenlijk gewoon te druk", zegt de eigenaar van café Sonneveld. "Mijn hart huilt. Ik vind het verschrikkelijk", zegt ze over de situatie. Sceptisch Buurtbewoner Lia Vonk denkt dat de extra maatregelen niet heel veel gaan veranderen, alhoewel ze het natuurlijk wel hoopt. Ze woont in een van de straten die worden ondergeplast. "Eerlijk gezegd probeer ik Koningsdag altijd te vermijden", vertelt ze in de deuropening. "Je kan natuurlijk niet achter elke feestvierder een agent plaatsen", zegt ze iets later. En natuurlijk snapt ze dat een feestje erbij hoort, maar volgens haar gaat dat dan zesendertig uur lang door. "Ik ben natuurlijk een dame van een zekere leeftijd, er komt een moment dat ik wil gaan slapen", concludeert ze. Excessen Jort Vos, een van de eigenaren van de Blaffende Vis, is eigenlijk wel te spreken over de extra maatregelen. "Ik denk dat het wel moeilijk te handhaven is. Ik denk dat ze een poging wagen", vertelt de café-eigenaar. Elk jaar is het bij zijn café, de Blaffende Vis, enorm druk. "Ik denk dat het vooral gaat om excessen. Kijk, als mensen een gezellig muziekje op hebben, zul je mij niet horen. Hetzelfde geldt dat voor een sixpackje, helemaal prima", vertelt hij. " Maar dan grote jongens die er echt een slaatje uit proberen te slaan en die verder niks toevoegen. Als zij worden aangepakt, dan ben ik allang blij", vertelt hij. Beveiliger tante Corrie Maar niet iedereen vindt het te druk in de Jordaan. Een buurtbewoner van de Westerstraat vindt het allemaal een beetje onzin. "Het is twee dagen in het jaar. Ik woon hier al zesendertig jaar en heb nog nooit een onveilige situatie gezien", vertelt hij. Maar mocht het dan toch onverhoopt gevaarlijk worden, dan zal tante Corrie er hoogstpersoonlijk op toezien dat het allemaal goed verloopt. "Ik ben niet bang, ik zet die pet wel op mijn kop", zegt ze lachend.
