For a small group of traders, the war with Iran has been a windfall. A number of lucrative, well-timed bets related to the war totaling over $1 billion have raised alarm over people connected to the Trump administration possibly using inside information to profit. Amanda Fischer, policy director and chief operating officer for Better Markets, says it’s unclear how closely regulators are watching these online betting markets. The president’s son Donald Trump Jr. is also an adviser to the two leading prediction markets, Polymarket and Kalshi, raising further questions about conflicts of interest. “There is a strict prohibition on offering gambling related to war, assassination, terrorism, gaming, activities that are illegal under state law or anything that’s contrary to the public interest. But the [Commodity Futures Trading Commission] under President Trump has completely retrenched from any enforcement of what kind of contracts are made available on these platforms,” says Fischer. The administration is facing a deadline of May 1 before it must seek explicit authorization from Congress for military force under the War Powers Act. While Democrats have opposed Trump’s military actions, they have done so largely on “procedural grounds” without making a forceful moral case against war, says Stephen Zunes, professor of politics and director of Middle Eastern studies at the University of San Francisco. “The climate that the Democrats have helped lay in these 20 years of hawkish statements and resolutions and the like really made Trump’s job easier and has enabled him to, thus far, get away with it,” says Zunes. Sinds vorige week woensdag hebben vrienden van de 23-jarige Ali Dia een herdenkingsplek voor hem ingericht bij het Museumplein. De Libanese Ali verbleef sinds 2021 in Amsterdam. Volgens zijn vrienden kreeg Ali in december een terugkeerbesluit naar Libanon opgelegd, omdat zijn asiel-verblijfsvergunning verliep en hij niet in Nederland mocht blijven. Vorige week kregen zij te horen dat Ali, net als enkele familieleden van hem, werd gedood door een naar hun informatie, Israëlische bomaanval. "Hij had hier moeten zijn met ons, zo simpel is het", zegt Shermain Hellings, een vriend van Ali. Hij zet een foto neer bij het herdenkingsplekje dat is ingericht op het Willem Sandbergplein, naast het Museumplein. Het is de plek waar Ali vaak bokste. Op de foto staat Shermain samen met Ali en nog twee andere boksvrienden. Ook Lisette Tuijn, een vriendin van Ali, is naar de plek toegekomen. Ze heeft het duidelijk zwaar met het verlies van Ali. "Hij was echt een heel harde werker. Hij was nog superjong en heel gemotiveerd. Hij had echt bedacht: ik ga bokskampioen worden." Verschil tussen gedwongen terugkeer en terugkeerbesluit Een terugkeerbesluit wordt opgelegd aan mensen die geen recht (meer) hebben om in Nederland te verblijven. Hierin staat binnen welke termijn zij het land moeten verlaten; dit is meestal binnen 28 dagen. Dit vertrek gebeurt vaak met ondersteuning van de overheid, bijvoorbeeld door het regelen van vliegtickets en andere hulp. Wanneer iemand weigert om Nederland vrijwillig te verlaten, kan de overheid diegene dwingen te vertrekken. Dit heet gedwongen terugkeer. Ze vertelt dat ze al erg ontdaan was van het nieuws dat Ali niet langer in Nederland kon blijven. "We waren echt heel erg verdrietig, want je weet niet hoe het afloopt", zegt ze. Shermain vertelt dat hij nauw betrokken was bij het terugkeerproces. "Samen met anderen heb ik echt mijn uiterste best gedaan om hem hier te kunnen houden en ook bij te kunnen dragen aan zijn profilering in de positieve zin." Binnen de termijn van 28 dagen vertrok Ali naar Libanon. Lisette zegt dat ze niet snapt waarom Ali überhaupt naar Libanon moest terugkeren. "Het was daar al onveilig, zeker in het zuiden van Libanon, waar hij naartoe terug moest, dus het slaat nergens op", zegt ze. "Dit had nooit mogen gebeuren." In een reactie aan AT5 laat een woordvoerder van het Ministerie van Asiel en Migratie weten niet op individuele gevallen in te kunnen gaan. Wel reageert de woordvoerder op de algemene vragen over terugkeerbesluiten en een gedwongen terugkeer naar Libanon. Daaruit blijkt dat de overheid na het zogenoemde besluit- en vertrekmoratorium dat in november 2024 werd ingevoerd, sinds 13 mei 2025 weer terugkeerbesluiten naar Libanon kan opleggen. Volgens de vrienden van Ali is dat wat er met hem is gebeurd. Reactie woordvoerder ministerie van Asiel en Migratie Sinds het aflopen van het besluit- en vertrekmoratorium Libanon op 13 mei 2025 kunnen vreemdelingen uit Libanon een terugkeerbesluit opgelegd krijgen. Hierbij zet de DTenV (Dienst Terugkeer en Vertrek) in op vrijwillig vertrek. Gedwongen terugkeer naar Libanon is op dit moment niet mogelijk in verband met de veiligheidssituatie. In verband met de situatie in Libanon, heeft de minister met ingang van 11 maart 2026 besloten om voorlopig geen gedwongen terugkeer naar Libanon meer uit te voeren. In aanvulling hierop kan worden gemeld dat er ook in de periode tussen het beëindigen van het besluit- en vertrekmoratorium Libanon op 13 mei 2025 en het hierboven genoemde besluit van 11 maart 2026 geen gedwongen vertrek naar Libanon heeft plaatsgevonden. Het maakt het verdriet van zijn vrienden er niet minder om. "Ik weet dat hij niks liever wilde dan hier blijven en doorbouwen aan zijn leven en daarmee ook het leven van de rest van zijn familie beter te maken en dat was hij ook aan het doen", zegt Shermain. The Pakistani military performs drills outside Altilt Fort. Locals are filmed around traditional Hunza dwellings. It also features Mir Mohammad Jamal Khan aka Mir Jamal Khan I of Hunza; the final King of the State of the Kingdom of the Hunza.
