As tech companies scramble to build massive new data centers to power artificial intelligence, marginalized communities are bearing the brunt of the environmental harms. In Memphis, Tennessee, Elon Musk’s xAI operates over two dozen methane gas-burning turbines without legal permits to power its data centers, Colossus 1 and Colossus 2, polluting the nation’s largest majority-Black city with toxic emissions.

After the Martin PBM Mariner went down during Operation Highjump, six crew members were stranded in Antarctica with temperatures around –20 °C. A rescue from USS Pine Island was initially impossible due to the brutal weather. As days passed and rations dwindled, morale plummeted. On day seven, a search plane flew nearby but couldn’t spot them through poor visibility. By day 13, the weather cleared. The plane located the crew but couldn’t land. Confirming they could manage a ten-mile trek, the survivors made their way across the snow and ice to the waiting rescuers, ending an almost two-week ordeal in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

Iedere maand organiseert operazangeres Maartje de Lint een zangcirkel in het Concertgebouw voor mensen met een hersenaandoening. Door samen te zingen wordt het deel van de hersenen getraind dat nog wel goed werkt en komen vaak herinneringen naar boven. Voor Jan is het de eerste keer dat hij meezingt met de zangcirkel en hij heeft er zin in. "Gisteren nog niet, toen had ik plankenkoorts." Samen met begeleider Dennis en andere bewoners uit Diemen is zijn groep vandaag naar het Concertgebouw gekomen om liedjes te zingen zoals 'Laat Me' van Ramses Shaffy, 'Volare' van Domenico Modugno en 'Wasmachine' van Trafassi. De leiding is in handen van operazangeres Maartje de Lint, die al vijftien jaar zangcirkels als deze organiseert. De opstelling is ruim opgezet: zo'n vijftig stoelen staan in een grote cirkel in de spiegelzaal en aan de zijkant wordt de piano bespeeld. De Lint zingt, loopt en hurkt af en toe bij verschillende deelnemers waarbij zij hun handen pakt. "Zodra ik voor iemand sta en zing, begint die persoon mee te zingen", zegt De Lint na afloop. "Want iemand weet het nog, zonder dat die het weet." Door te zingen wordt het deel van de hersenen getraind dat nog wel goed werkt, legt De Lint uit. Mensen die een diagnose hebben gekregen met ziektes als Alzheimer, Parkinson of andere hersenaandoeningen horen vaak dat alle functies nu achteruit zullen gaan, maar dat is volgens De Lint niet helemaal waar. "Zingen is een hele eenvoudige manier om toegang te krijgen tot het gezonde deel van het geheugen." Dat merkt ook één van de bezoekers. Hij werkt al bijna veertig jaar in het Concertgebouw en is hier nu met zijn vrouw, die aan Alzheimer lijdt. "Alles gaat open. Ze geniet, ze glimt, ze straalt. Zingen reset de hersenen weer." En dat maakt ook een hoop emoties los. Een grap van een Youtubekanaal lijkt de oorzaak van een fatale schietpartij op Nieuwjaarsdag waarbij twee onschuldige Syrische jongens om het leven zijn gekomen. Dat zei het OM vandaag tijdens de eerste zitting in de zaak. De Youtuber ontkent dat de grap via zijn kanaal gemaakt is. Een halfuur voordat Efe Y. het vuur zou hebben geopend, werd hij dreigend gebeld door de Youtuber, stelt he OM. Y. zou daarop hebben gezegd dat de man naar 'die blauwe brug' moest komen, doelend op een brug in het Piet Wiedijkpark. Als de verdachte daar aankomt, opent hij het vuur op drie nietsvermoedende jongens. "Zij waren op de verkeerde plaats op de verkeerde tijd", zegt het Openbaar Ministerie vandaag tijdens een eerste pro forma zitting. Prank call Het Youtubekanaal, Rouand YT, haalt vaker zogeheten prank calls uit tijdens livestreams. Mensen kunnen geld doneren en een telefoonnummer doorgeven om te bellen. Ruim een halfuur voor de fatale schietpartij doneert een kijker een bedrag en stelt voor Efe Y. te bellen met een gangsterverhaal. "Zeg dat je geld krijgt en uit Rotterdam-Zuid komt." In het gesprek reageert Y. fel: "Kom naar die brug, hoerenkind." Er wordt heftig gescholden en uiteindelijk gaat Y. naar het Piet Wiedijkpark. Drie Syrische jongens uit een azc aan de Sloterweg zijn op dat moment onderweg naar de McDonald's en komen door het Piet Wiedijkpark. Op het moment dat zij het park ingaan, worden zij beschoten. Twee van hen overleven het niet. Een derde slachtoffer weet te ontkomen. Het onderzoek naar de schietpartij is nog in volle gang, maar verschillende getuigen hebben al verklaringen afgelegd. Kort na de schietpartij zou Y. tegen een getuige hebben gezegd dat hij de schutter zou zijn geweest. "De verdachte heeft tegen de getuige verteld geschoten te hebben, omdat er nog mensen laat daar waren. Ook zou verdachte hebben gezegd dat er nog een derde slachtoffer was die had weten te ontkomen, terwijl dit op dat moment nog niet in media gedeeld was", zo vertelde de officier van justitie vandaag. Na het contact zouden getuigen en verdachte ook nog contact hebben gehad via Whatsapp waar onder andere wordt gerefereerd aan een vuurwapen en uit het zicht voor de politie blijven. Daarnaast is er bij een doorzoeking van de woning van de familie van Y. een zilverkleurig vuurwapen gevonden. Ook zijn er schotresten gevonden op een broek van de verdachte. De verdachte is vermoedelijk de avond van de schietpartij op camerabeelden rondom het park gesignaleerd. Na het telefoontje liep Y. vanaf het huis van zijn oma naar het Piet Wiedijkpark toe, wat op een paar minuten lopen ligt. De verdachte heeft een zorgmachtiging vanwege psychosociale problemen. Zo heeft Y. complexe PTSS in combinatie met schizofrenie. De medicatie die de verdachte hiervoor slikt, heeft hij al zes maanden niet gebruikt, zo verklaarde Y. Een zorgmachtiging hoeft niet te betekenen dat diegene verplicht moet worden opgenomen in een kliniek. Het kan namelijk ook ambulante zorg zijn. Het onderzoek gaat nog verder. De verdachte wordt binnenkort onderzocht in het Pieter Baan Centrum. "When the system fails, civil society needs to step in," says Palestinian activist Saif Abukeshek, citing a history of nonviolent direct action within the Palestinian national struggle. The Arctic Sunrise's project lead, Pujarini Sen, explains the participation of Greenpeace as an extension of their work for the environment and holding companies that profit from climate change and pollution accountable. "Fossil fuel companies also benefit from wars, from genocide," says Sen. "We don't view these issues as separate." They also speak about how over a dozen vessels from the flotilla encircled and disrupted the MSC Maya, one of the largest cargo ships in the world, for several hours. They say the cargo ship was delivering raw materials for weapons to Israel. They say the action was inspired by protests by dockworkers. The NAACP is suing xAI for violating the Clean Air Act. "We are, unfortunately, a cautionary tale about what will and possibly can happen if you don't have the right rules and guardrails in place," says KeShaun Pearson, the executive director of Memphis Community Against Pollution. Pearson says pollution from xAI's energy generation is already "at a level even higher than our Memphis International Airport." In Maine, state legislators recently passed a first-in-the-country statewide moratorium on large data centers. "Maine residents are concerned about the impacts of data centers on both their electric rates and other utility rates, as well as on our wonderful environment," says Democratic state Representative Melanie Sachs, who sponsored the bill designed to give legislators time to develop regulations around new data center construction. Sachs says developers have been operating in "complete secrecy," refusing to engage with community stakeholders, while their plans appear to provide "limited economic opportunity with very few local jobs." Niet de staat, maar de Joodse gemeenschap moet zeggenschap krijgen over wat er met Joodse roofkunst moet gebeuren. Dat heeft een commissie die daar onderzoek naar deed aan het ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap (OCW) geadviseerd. De kunst zou naar een nog op te richten stichting moeten gaan. "We weten dat we voor een groot deel van deze kunstwerken zal je nooit meer een nabestaande vinden, dan is het belangrijk om er iets mee te doen en ze niet alleen achter slot en grendel in een depot te hebben." De kunstwerken kwamen tussen 1933 en 1945 in handen van de nazi's door roof, dwangverkoop of inbeslagname. De kunst uit deze collectie kon na de oorlog door de geallieerden in beslag worden genomen. Daarna werd het overhandigd aan de Nederlandse staat en die is nog steeds eigenaar van de roofkunst, die onder meer uit schilderijen, tapijten, meubels en keramiek bestaat. Veel eigenaren niet achterhaald Een deel van de door de geallieerden teruggebrachte roofkunst is inmiddels teruggegeven aan de rechtmatige eigenaren of hun erfgenamen. Nog altijd worden er erfgenamen gevonden, maar, zegt de commissie over verweesde Joodse roofkunst, voor veel objecten geldt dat dat waarschijnlijk niet het geval zal zijn. En dus is het de vraag wat er met de kunst moest gebeuren. Het ministerie van OCW riep daarom een commissie voor verweesde Joodse roofkunst in het leven. Voorzitter Lodewijk Asscher overhandigde vandaag het rapport en stond er met een dubbel gevoel. "Het gaat over zoveel spullen die van mensen waren zoals jij en ik", legt hij uit. "Die vermoord zijn, verdwenen zijn in de geschiedenis. En eigenlijk staan we hier een beetje ongemakkelijk met hun spullen. Het zijn er zoveel, dus het stemt heel erg tot nadenken en het stemt nederig. Zo'n bestekje daar zaten mensen mee te eten, zo'n schilderij hing boven de bank." Het raakt Asscher persoonlijk, wiens opa een concentratiekamp overleefde. Zijn vader zat als klein jongetje ondergedoken in Amsterdam. Het huis van zijn opa werd vlak na die deportatie door de Duitsers leeggehaald. Depot Amersfoort Een groot deel van die voorwerpen die door de Duitsers werden buitgemaakt liggen nu dus nog opgeslagen in de NK-collectie van de staat in Amersfoort. Daarin zitten talloze schilderijen, tapijten, serviezen en meubels die tijdens het naziregime vanuit Nederland in Duitsland terecht zijn gekomen, door roof, dwangverkoop of confiscatie. Mathijs Smith doet onderzoek naar de herkomst van die stukken in dat depot. "Het zijn echt gebruiksvoorwerpen en heel persoonlijke objecten die bij bijzondere gelegenheden gebruikt werden of juist alledaags", beschrijft hij. "Het gaat dan ook echt om de emotionele waarde van die objecten. Dus het zijn echt getuigen van een leven dat niet meer is en van een familiegeschiedenis." Voor Asscher, die ook een bezoek bracht aan het depot in Amersfoort, was dat een gedenkwaardige  middag. "Dan sta je toch opeens met een zilveren bestek waar mensen gezellig op vrijdagavond mee aan het eten waren, het leven aan het vieren waren. Dat greep mij ontzettend aan."  Een deel van de roofkunst is dus teruggevonden, "maar de precieze omvang is nooit bekend geworden en het is onmogelijk vast te stellen welk deel buiten beeld is gebleven." De adviescommissie oordeelt nu dus dat de roofkunst in ieder geval overgedragen moet worden aan een stichting die de collectie namens de Joodse gemeenschap kan beheren. Een ander advies is daarbij om de kunst te gebruiken voor educatiedoeleinden. The Philosopher Who Warned That Convenience Can Become a Cage Why does modern life so often feel efficient on the surface but exhausting underneath?
