Meer dan 500 miljoen kilo aardappels in Nederland lopen het risico te verrotten. Aardappeltelers zitten met een enorm overschot dat ze niet kwijt kunnen. De oorzaak: de oogsten in Europa zijn goed door gunstig weer, terwijl de vraag laag ligt. Er wordt weinig geëxporteerd, mede door de geopolitieke onrust.

Het Hamerkwartier in Noord gaat ingrijpend veranderen. Een deel van het gebied wordt gesloopt en er moeten zo’n 6000 woningen bijkomen. En dat betekent dat er veel gaat veranderen voor de omliggende buurten. Buurtbewoners zijn bezorgd dat de ziel van de wijk zal verdwijnen en gingen daarover vandaag in gesprek met projectontwikkelaars, de gemeente en elkaar. Er zijn plannen voor torens van 130 meter, vlak naast laagbouw in onder meer de Vogelbuurt. Daarmee komen mogelijk de hoogste torens van Amsterdam naast een buurt waar de kleinste huizen te staan. Buurtbewoners weten niet precies hoe dat er straks uit gaat zien. Omdat informatiebijeenkomsten vaak op onhandige tijden zijn, organiseren bewoners vanmiddag zelf een manifestatie bij Hoogtij in het Hamerkwartier. ''De bewonersbijeenkomsten die duidelijkheid zouden moeten bieden zijn voor veel buurtbewoners niet haalbaar met werk'', aldus Jonathan Hein, initiatiefnemer van de manifestatie. Oude en nieuwe Noorderlingen komen tijdens deze manifestatie samen om zich te laten informeren en mee te praten over de toekomst van hun wijk. Tijdens de manifestatie trekt de maquette veel bekijks. Daarop is goed te zien hoe groot de veranderingen zijn: hoge woontorens die naast bestaande huisjes worden geplaatst. Voor veel bewoners maakt dat in een oogopslag duidelijk hoe ingrijpend de plannen zijn en wat dat betekent voor het karakter van de wijk. ''Ik snap met respect dat er natuurlijk woningen bijgebouwd moeten worden, maar met die torens zie je het hele hart van Noord wegvloeien'', zegt buurtbewoonster Linda. Door de bouwplannen moeten ook verschillende bedrijven plaatsmaken. Creatieve werkplekken en kleine ondernemingen, zoals Kunstlicht, dreigen te verdwijnen uit het gebied. Bewoners en ondernemers vrezen dat daarmee een belangrijk deel van de identiteit van de wijk verloren gaat. Mongolian Beef Ingredients 500g (17.6 oz) steak, thinly sliced (rib meat, sirloin, rump, or flank work well) 60ml (¼ cup) soy sauce 100g (⅔ cup/3.5 oz) cornflour (cornstarch) pinch of MSG ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda cracked white pepper 1 brown onion 4 spring onions 4 cloves garlic 2 Birdseye red chillies thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, finely grated 500ml (16.9 fl oz) tallow or peanut oil for frying 50ml (1.7 fl oz) water Steamed rice, to serve Method Step 1: Marinate the beef and prep the vegetables. Trim the beef from any excess fat or sinew. Slice thinly into strips. Combine 30ml of the soy sauce, 2 tablespoons of the cornflour, white pepper, MSG and bicarb soda in a large bowl. Add the beef and mix well to combine. Cover and refrigerate for 1 to 3 hours to marinate. Thinly slice the onion, then thickly slice the spring onions, keeping the white and the greens separated. Finely dice the garlic, finely slice the red chilli and finely grate the ginger, then set all aside. Step 2: Cook the beef Add enough of the tallow or oil to a wok to shallow fry and heat over high heat to 180°C (355°F). (You can test the temperature with a chopstick, when it is inserted in the oil and bubbles, it is hot enough). Remove the beef from the fridge and add the remaining cornflour. Toss well to coat. Fry the beef in batches for 3-4 minutes. Then drain on a wire rack over a tray. Carefully remove most of the oil from the wok. Step 3: Cook the sauce Place the wok back over a high heat. Add the onions and stir fry for 2 minutes, tossing occasionally. Add the spring onion whites, garlic, chilli and ginger. Toss well and cook for a further minute. Return the beef to the wok, and toss to combine. Add the remaining soy sauce and the water. Bring to a boil and cook for a further 2 minutes. Stir in the spring onion greens. Serve over steamed rice and enjoy!

Op de Blankenstraat in de Czaar Peterbuurt is zaterdagavond een vrouw neergestoken. Ze werd zwaargewond aangetroffen bij een woning en is overgebracht naar het ziekenhuis. Volgens bewoners gaat het om een buurvrouw. Bewoners van de straat hoorden rond 23.15 iemand om hulp roepen. De politie werd gealarmeerd en bij aankomst troffen ze voor de deur een hevig bloedende vrouw aan met steekwonden. Er is een traumateam opgeroepen en ze is zwaargewond maar aanspreekbaar overgebracht naar het ziekenhuis. Impact op de buurt "We hoorden heel veel geschreeuw en gebonk", zegt een bovenbuurman. "Toen ik uit het raam keek zag je de buurvrouw liggen, levenloos op straat, met omstanders die er bij waren. Toen liepen we naar beneden en zat de hele trap ook onder het bloed." De buurt staat voor een raadsel en vragen zich af wat er is gebeurd. "We zijn best close met elkaar en hebben de hele nacht nog contact gehad. Het heeft wel impact op ons", aldus de buurman. De politie ging de woning in, maar daar was niemand aanwezig. Er is nog geen verdachte aangehouden. Er is een onderzoek gestart en de straat is afgezet. De politie komt graag in contact met getuigen. Het transport ging van Zuidoost naar Nieuw-West en het centrum AT5 kreeg meerdere tips binnen van Amsterdammers die een politiehelikopter zagen vliegen. Onder meer bewoners rondom het Osdorpplein, de Lelylaan, Venserpolder en Diemen maakten melding. Ook bewoners rondom de Oudezijds Voorburgwal en het Raamplein zagen de heli. Op beelden is te zien hoe de waardetransportauto over de Weesperstraat rijdt onder begeleiding van zeker vier motoren en drie politieauto's. Een bewoner uit het centrum is niet te spreken over de actie. "Moet dat op zondagochtend om 6.30 uur?", laat hij weten. Een fatbike met banden dunner dan zeven centimeter: dat is de skinnybike waarmee je volgende maand wel gewoon door het Vondelpark mag rijden. Sinds de gemeente een fatbikeverbod in het park aankondigde, is de skinnybike de nieuwe trend. Fietsverkopers verwachten dat de dunne variant snel in het straatbeeld te zien zal zijn. "We weten allemaal dat het overstapeffect gaat komen." Op de weg zie je nu nog vooral fatbikes, maar fietsverkopers schakelen al op grote schaal over naar de skinnybike. Fietsers maken andere keuzes nu de gemeente ook daadwerkelijk regels doorvoert, merkt Armando Muis van fietswinkel La Souris. Muis zag de verkoop van fatbikes afgelopen maand met 30 procent dalen en de verkoop van skinnybikes vlug stijgen. "Net als van de snorscooter naar de fatbike, stappen mensen nu ook weer over van de fatbike naar de skinnybike." Vanaf 11 mei zijn fietsen met banden dikker dan zeven centimeter niet meer toegestaan in het Vondelpark. De fatbike voldoet daar niet aan, de skinnybike wel. De regels zijn dus vrij makkelijk te omzeilen. "Er gaat een kat-en-muisspel gecreëerd worden met de overheid en fabrikanten", waarschuwde toenmalig minister van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat Robert Tieman (BBB) vorig jaar al. En dat zorgt voor onzekerheid in de branche, zegt fietsverkoper Muis. "Duidelijkheid zou fijn zijn." Geen landelijke regels Scherpe en duidelijke regelgeving is echter lastig, stelt de huidige regering. Vandaar dat er nog geen landelijke regels zijn. Wethouder Melanie van der Horst (Verkeer) wilde daar in Amsterdam niet op wachten. "Fatbikes geven zoveel overlast. Dit is een noodgreep." Zij wil liever nog een minimumleeftijd voor fatbikebestuurders. Ook ondernemer Muis zou daarmee kunnen leven. Maar dat ligt in Den Haag dan weer lastig. En dus zullen (minderjarige) skinnybikers waarschijnlijk snel meer te zien zijn in het Vondelpark en de rest van de stad. De wethouder zegt geen reden te zien om iets te doen aan de skinnybike zolang de berijders zich netjes gedragen en het aantal ongelukken meevalt. "Er worden doorlopend nieuwe voertuigen en fietsen ontwikkeld, daar hebben we ook niets op tegen. Ze moeten wel veilig zijn en geen overlast veroorzaken. Ik hoop dus dat deze inderdaad aan de wet voldoen zoals de verkopers claimen en dat ze dus niet op te voeren zijn. De Antwerpse onderzoekster Rosa Rademakers heeft in de VS de prestigieuze Breakthrough Prize gewonnen. Dat is een van de grootste wetenschapsprijzen, na de Nobelprijzen. Rademakers ontdekte 15 jaar geleden dat dezelfde genetische afwijking zowel een vorm van dementie als de dodelijke spierziekte ALS kan veroorzaken.
