Williams, a train / locomotive chaser, this reel of home movies shows steam engines operating in the Midwest in the 1940s and 1950s. The film starts with shots of the Baltimore & Ohio's P-7d streamlined Pacific locomotive. This is likely the train known as the "Cincinnatian" which ran between Cincinnati, Ohio and Washington, D.C. The P-7 class consisted of 20 4-6-2 "Pacific" type locomotives built in 1927. They were the prime motive power for the B&O’s top passenger trains for 31 years. In 1937 locomotive 5304 was rebuilt by the B&O into a Class P-7a streamlined locomotive. In 1942 locomotive 5306 was rebuilt into a Class P-7b streamliner. In 1944 locomotives 5305, 5308, 5309, 5318 were rebuilt into Class P-7c. In 1946 locomotives 5301-5303 were rebuilt into Class P-7d’s. Locomotive 5304 was also rebuilt to Class P-7d in 1946. At 1:37, a B&O Mikado 2-8-2 is shown. The first of these engines were produced by Baldwin and sold to the Nippon Railways of Japan, thus the “Mikado” designation. The B&O purchased its first 150 Class Q engines in 1910. Another Mikado is seen at 2:26 and 5:37. At 8:43, locomotive 5318 is seen. This was a "Pacific" type locomotives, class P-7. It carried the nickname of "President Garfield" when B&O were naming their locomotives after former Presidents. At 13:22, another Mikado locomotive is seen under steam. At 14:06, B&O locomotive 7613 is shown pulling a heavy load of ore. 7613 was part of the EM-1 class, a series of powerful 2-8-8-4 steam locomotives built for the B&O, designed for heavy freight service, particularly in the Appalachian mountain regions of the B&O system. At 14:40, a General Electric universal series diesel locomotive is shown, circa 1956. This is possibly a manufacturer's test unit or demo locomotive, possibly 1801. At 16:04, a Hudson type steam locomotive, probably one of the four the B&O built. Each was a different design and belonged to a unique class (Class V), built for passenger service and featuring water-tube fireboxes. The B&O built the last Hudson ever created, built in 1936, was designated Class V-4 and carried road number 5360. It had 80" drivers, 22.5 x 29 cylinders, weighed 369,000 lbs with a tractive effort of 52,000 lbs. This locomotive, built completely by the B&O was used in passenger service west of Cumberland, MD and lasted until 1950. At 17:00, a steam engine idles on a siding, a caboose behind it. At 18:12, New York Central locomotive 2933 passes with a full head of steam, pulling tanks of oil. This is an L-2d class 4-8-2 Mohawk "Mountain" type steam locomotive, built in October 1929 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) for the New York Central Railroad (NYC). The wheel arrangement is known as the Mountain type on other railroads, but the New York Central dubbed them "Mohawks" after the Mohawk River, which the railroad followed. It pulled freight trains until being retired in 1957. The locomotive is on display at the National Museum of Transportation in Kirkwood, Missouri. At 19:13, Louisville and Nashville diesel 105 passes. This was an ALCO RS-3, one of 1,418 produced. At 19:47, 4-8-4, L&N M-1 2-8-4 steam locomotives, nicknamed "Big Emmas" by crews, are shown. These engines were built in three batches between 1942 and 1949. Here, #1951 and locomotive #1963 are shown. At 28:35, a Louisville & Nashville E6A diesel locomotive hauls a passenger train across a bridge. At 29:41, Big Emma locomotive 1978 is shown assembling a train. At 31:19, Frankfort and Cincinnati Railroad, F&C Railroad switch engine 100, a General Electric locomotive, is shown. At 32:47, L&N #105 diesel electric switch locomotive is shown. At 35:27, sign for the L&N first train centennial is shown, followed by a shot of locomotive #2613 pulling the commemorative passenger train. The film ends with shots of people holding signs welcoming the train on its centennial trip. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. The U.S. deal to take majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s oil reserves comes nine months after the U.S. military abducted President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores in a raid on Caracas. "It’s clear that this is not a deal that any Venezuelan government would have entered into unless this country had been subject to an invasion, and unless its authorities had been held at gunpoint. So, I think we’ve replaced gunboat diplomacy now for gunpoint diplomacy," says Venezuelan economist Francisco Rodríguez.

Een aantal taxichauffeurs uit de stad heeft een eigen app gelanceerd die financieel voordeliger moet zijn voor zowel chauffeurs als passagiers. De groep is klaar met de hoge commissies die platformen als Uber en Bolt vragen. Inmiddels hebben zich bijna 1.300 van de ruim 7.500 taxichauffeurs in de stad bij de app aangesloten. Een van de initiatiefnemers van de app is taxichauffeur Ivo van Leeuwen. Hij reed in het verleden onder meer voor Uber en Bolt en merkte dat hij lange dagen moest maken om voldoende omzet over te houden. "Wij betalen gewoon te hoge commissies over die ritten heen", legt hij uit. Om een normaal inkomen over te houden na een dag rijden besloot hij samen met andere taxichauffeurs een app op te zetten. Chauffeurs dragen daar minder af, waardoor zij meer aan een rit overhouden. Tegelijkertijd moeten de ritten voor passagiers goedkoper worden. Meerdere chauffeurs die de app inmiddels gebruiken, herkennen zich in het verhaal van Van Leeuwen. "Op dit moment wordt er tegen de 50% commissie ingehouden op onze verdiensten", zegt een van hen. "Dat is heel veel geld, waardoor wij veel mislopen." Een andere chauffeur rijdt ondertussen ook nog voor Uber en Bolt. Of dat niet een beetje hypocriet is? "Het is een beetje hypocriet als je het zo bekijkt", lacht hij. "Maar uiteindelijk is ons doel wel om volledig voor NLCabs te gaan rijden." De initiatiefnemers hopen bovendien dat de nieuwe app bijdraagt aan veiligere werkomstandigheden. Chauffeurs die door lage inkomsten extreem lange dagen maken, kunnen volgens hen door vermoeidheid in gevaarlijke situaties terechtkomen. Van de ruim 7.500 Amsterdamse taxichauffeurs hebben zich inmiddels bijna 1.300 bij de nieuwe taxi-app aangesloten. "Wij zijn Amsterdamse taxichauffeurs en wij willen voor onze stad opkomen", zegt een chauffeur. "Die buitenlandse platformen willen wij als het kan eruit kicken." Volgens initiatiefnemer Van Leeuwen groeit het aantal klanten mee met het aantal aangesloten chauffeurs. De app is voorlopig alleen beschikbaar in Amsterdam en omgeving, maar uiteindelijk willen ze in heel Nederland actief worden. "Het zal een uitdaging zijn om bekendheid te werven", erkent Ivo. Basic training is shown to be a dehumanizing process designed to break individuals and enforce total obedience. Soldiers describe their disillusionment with the Vietnam War, and how it serves corporate profits rather than democratic ideals. They criticize the South Vietnamese allies, faulty military equipment, and the massive cost of the war. The narrative shows how enlisted soldiers are exploited, while officers benefit from the system. It draws connections between military action abroad and the suppression of civil rights movements at home, suggesting that soldiers are being used as tools to protect the interests of the powerful. De nachtsluiting voor grote schepen en schepen met gevaarlijke stoffen op het Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal is uitgesteld tot komende donderdag 22.00 uur. Dat heeft Rijkswaterstaat vanmorgen laten weten aan de branchevereniging Koninklijke Binnenvaart Nederland (KBN). De nachtsluiting zou afgelopen nacht ingaan, maar na overleg met de sector heeft Rijkswaterstaat besloten eerst de aangedragen alternatieven te onderzoeken. Rijkswaterstaat wil de toegang ontzeggen aan schepen die langer zijn dan 135 meter en breder dan 11,5 meter. Ook schepen die gevaarlijke stoffen vervoeren, mogen tussen 22.00 uur 's avonds en 06.00 uur 's ochtend het kanaal niet over. Over het Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal varen jaarlijks, naar schatting, zo'n 100.000 schepen. Het zou gaan om tientallen schepen per nacht die nu worden geweerd. De reden is dat Rijkswaterstaat kampt met een personeelstekort, waardoor er te weinig scheepvaartbegeleiders zijn. Koninklijke Binnenvaart Nederland (KBN) noemt de maatregel "disproportioneel en onvoldoende onderbouwd". De branchevereniging dreigt met juridische stappen tegen de overheidsorganisatie. Ook ORAM, de branchevereniging voor Haven en Industrie in het Noordzeekanaalgebied vindt de maatregel van Rijkswaterstaat onbegrijpelijk. Directeur Kees Noorman: "Het is bijna niet voor te stellen dat het gebeurt. Mind-boggling gewoon. De gevolgen zijn zeer groot. Het betekent dat een groot deel van de brandstof en andere lading in grote schepen alleen nog maar overdag afgevoerd kunnen worden. Dat een groot deel van de bedrijven die in Amsterdam 24 uur per dag functioneren 's nachts plotseling niet meer kunnen draaien. Dat is dodelijk. Daarnaast moeten de schepen die daar normaal komen en wegvaren ergens anders liggen. En ligplaatsen zijn er ook niet, dus dat leidt tot enorme congestie en het dichtslibben van de hele infrastructuur in Nederland. Het Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal is het meest drukbevaren kanaal van Nederland en bijna van Europa. Dus dat is dodelijk." Tijdens een spoedoverleg tussen KBN en Rijkswaterstaat zijn verschillende alternatieven besproken, waaronder afspraken over de snelheid en de inzet van een patrouillevaartuig. Volgens KBN zijn deze alternatieven niet onmiddellijk door Rijkswaterstaat afgewezen, maar moeten ze wel eerst onderzocht worden. En daar neemt Rijkswaterstaat dus tot in ieder geval donderdag 22.00 uur de tijd voor. Nieuws | Minister Mirjam Sterk (Langdurige Zorg, Jeugd en Sport) is 'geschrokken' van het aantal jongeren dat een-op-een-begeleiding in de jeugdzorg krijgt. "Ik vind het heel zorgelijke informatie", schrijft ze aan de Tweede Kamer. De aantallen zijn "hoger dan tevoren verwacht”. De kosten voor zulke begeleiding loopt op tot enkele tonnen en soms een miljoen euro per kind per jaar. Op 1 mei van dit jaar verbleven 768 jongeren in zo’n een-op-een-plaatsing. Daarnaast kregen 1.557 jongeren zorg die hun gemeente buiten de gewone afspraken met zorgaanbieders om moest regelen. De cijfers komen uit een inventarisatie die de minister liet uitvoeren na de Zembla-uitzending ‘Kinderen die niemand wil’. Daarin onderzocht Zembla wat er gebeurt met jongeren met complexe problematiek voor wie geen passende plek te vinden is.
