Van Noord tot Zuid: op verschillende plekken in de stad zorgen boomwortels voor fietspaden 'met een uitdaging'. De Molukkenstraat in Oost staat misschien wel in de top 3 van grootste hobbelfietspaden in de stad. De situatie daar is zo nijpend dat de straat binnenkort wordt opgehoogd. Als er dan verder niets gebeurt, zullen de eerste wortels over een paar jaar weer omhoog komen. Wie door Amsterdam fietst, komt ze vroeg of laat tegen: fietspaden die in de buurt van bomen door de wortels omhoog worden geduwd. "En dan moet je even inhouden", zegt een fietser op de Molukkenstraat. "Want dan denk je 'gut daar ga ik'." Ook op de Bilderdijkstraat in West herkennen fietsers het fenomeen. "Je moet even uit je zadel, anders trilt je hele lijf." Een ander zegt: "Het is hier toch een zooi? Daarvoor ga je ook naar Amsterdam? Je mag blij zijn dat er bomen zijn." Watercipressen Op de Molukkenstraat gaat de gemeente op korte termijn ingrijpen door de straat een stuk op te hogen. De wortels kunnen niet weggehaald worden, want het gaat om de belangrijkste wortels van de bomen en anders dreigen de bomen instabiel te worden. Langs het fietspad van de Molukkenstraat staan watercipressen. Die bomen staan erom bekend dat hun wortels sterk omhoogkomen en zo het wegdek kunnen beschadigen. "Vanwege dit probleem planten we deze soort tegenwoordig niet meer in straten, alleen nog in bijvoorbeeld parken", laat een woordvoerder van de gemeente weten. De oplossing is wel tijdelijk: de gemeente verwacht dat de wortels over een paar jaar opnieuw voor hobbels zullen zorgen. The tax would apply to roughly 250 Californians who now hold an estimated $2.3 trillion in wealth. Supporters say the wealth tax could raise up to $100 billion, with about 90% going toward healthcare. The remaining funds would support education and food assistance programs. If Proposition 40 passes, it will mark the first time a government in the U.S. successfully taxes the wealth — rather than just the income — of the ultra-rich. "It's past time that billionaires pay their fair share," says Lorena Gonzalez, president of the California Federation of Labor Unions, which is backing the initiative. Pillay has been the United Nations high commissioner for human rights and a judge at both the International Criminal Court and at an international tribunal investigating the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Most recently, she led the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Hours after Pillay was announced as winner of the Nobel Prize, the United States imposed sweeping new sanctions against the International Criminal Court. "It's extremely shocking to me, totally unacceptable, that the United States administration can today impose sanctions against the International Criminal Court," says Pillay, speaking to Democracy Now! from The Hague. Navi Pillay is now 85 years old. She was born into an Indian Tamil family in apartheid South Africa in 1941. The first woman to start a law practice in Natal, South Africa, in 1967, Pillay began her legal career defending anti-apartheid activists including Nelson Mandela, exposing torture, and helping establish key rights for prisoners on Robben Island. Van 22 t/m 24 oktober treedt ze hier op in gezelschap van het cellist en operazanger-duo miss Mazzy x Laurence en componisten Guenter Terraler en Pema Bennardis. Tijdens deze performances brengen ze klassieke en elektronische muziek samen. Op de zolder van Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder vind je een voormalige katholieke schuilkerk. De kerk ontstond in de 17e eeuw, toen de stad een protestants bestuur had. Omdat het destijds verboden was om het katholieke geloof in het openbaar te praktiseren, werd deze unieke zolderkerk gebouwd. Dit optreden is onderdeel van het ADE Arts & Culture programma, dat interdisciplinaire projecten en opkomende initiatieven door de hele stad een podium biedt. Binnen dit platform zoekt Slimfit de grenzen op door eeuwenoude en moderne werelden te laten botsen. Ze onderzoekt het rituele karakter van geluid door klassieke muziek te remixen met live elektronische composities. Al veertig jaar wast geboren Amsterdammer Nolly Vittali de ramen van panden in de binnenstad. Maar wie hem aan het werk ziet, zal vooral zijn trouwe viervoeter Zarrie opvallen. De hond gaat overal met hem mee en is inmiddels een bekende verschijning in het centrum. “Hij is de trekpleister van Amsterdam”, zegt Nolly trots. Volgens de glazenwasser wordt Zarrie dagelijks door honderden voorbijgangers geaaid en geknuffeld. Toeristen stoppen regelmatig om de hond te filmen, maar ook veel Amsterdammers kennen hem inmiddels. De twee zijn 24 uur per dag, zeven dagen per week samen. “Dit is zijn leven. Hij weet ook niet beter.” Het glazenwassen zit Nolly in het bloed. Zijn opa kwam in de jaren dertig vanuit Italië naar Amsterdam om schoorstenen te vegen. Zijn vader besloot in 1953 glazenwasser te worden en werd in 1969 zelfs Nederlands kampioen glazenwassen. Inmiddels werkt ook Nolly’s zoon in het familiebedrijf. Maar zonder hond kan Nolly eigenlijk niet. Toen zijn vorige hond overleed, bracht hij een jaar zonder huisdier door. Dat beviel hem allerminst. Met Zarrie heeft hij weer een trouwe metgezel aan zijn zijde. “Het is gewoon heerlijk man.
