The U.S. hosted the first direct talks between Israel and Lebanon in decades on Tuesday in Washington. Israel's demand that Hezbollah be disarmed is "anything but reasonable," says Daniel Levy, former Israeli peace negotiator. "What [Israel] is doing here is trying to put something that sounds reasonable on the table, but with the intention of embarrassing and humiliating the Lebanese government," which Levy says does not have the capacity to disarm Hezbollah.

De verdachte van de steekpartij op de Dam, vorig jaar maart, heeft tegenover gevangenispersoneel opvallende uitspraken gedaan over zijn motief. Dat vertelde de officier van justitie vandaag tijdens een voorbereidende zitting: "Hij vindt dat de belastingbetaler uit Europa zou moeten boeten, omdat zij degenen zijn die de Oekraïense oorlog financieren. Hij zou expres in de ruggen van willekeurige Europeanen hebben gestoken, omdat hij, zoals hij zelf zegt, zo het snelste de mensen naar adem kon laten happen en hij ze dan niet in hun ogen hoeft aan te kijken." De uitspraken zijn via het gevangenispersoneel bij het Openbaar Ministerie terechtgekomen via een dagrapportage uit december 2025. De opvallende uitspraken over de belastingbetaler en het neersteken van het slachtoffer tussen de schouderbladen sloot hij af met de opmerking dat hij het zo weer zou doen. Getuigen uit Oekraïne gehoord Roman D. wordt verdacht van het neersteken van vijf mensen in een straat vlak bij de Dam, dat gebeurde op 27 maart vorig jaar. Op de zitting vandaag werd verder duidelijk dat er twee personen zijn gehoord die de man vanuit het leger en zijn jeugd kende. Een majoor uit het leger zou de in verhoren met de Oekraïense autoriteiten hebben beschreven als een soldaat die zijn taken uitvoert, maar ook als een lui persoon. Daarnaast zou D. in gesprekken hebben gesproken over dat hij naar de gevangenis in Europa zou gaan: "Hij had maar één plan, in de gevangenis belanden en genieten van uitkeringen." Een ander vertelt D. vanuit zijn jeugd te kennen en beschrijft de verdachte als een gedisciplineerd iemand en herkent hem niet in wat er is gebeurd in Amsterdam. Tijdens een vorige zitting werd bekend dat in een kamer van een hotel aan het Damrak eind vorig jaar zijn paspoort, een ID-kaart en een creditcard van hem zijn gevonden. De man had een dag voor de steekpartij ingecheckt in het hotel. Het moet voor minister Bart van den Brink (Asiel en Migratie) een ontnuchterende week zijn. Het coalitie-akkoord gebiedt hem om de hardvochtige asielwetten van zijn voorganger Marjolein Faber door de Eerste Kamer te loodsen. Het wetsvoorstel was de raison d'être van het vorige kabinet. De VVD sloot een duivelspact met de PVV om ‘het strengste asielbeleid ooit te realiseren’. De coalitie stelde de politieke brekebeen Marjolein Faber (PVV) aan om de plannen in wetgeving te gieten. Het CDA en D66 hielden zich destijds op principiële gronden afzijdig. Met name de strafbaarstelling illegaliteit, die per amendement in de wet werd gefietst, vormde een heikel punt voor de twee partijen. In de Tweede Kamer stemden ze tegen. D66 won de recente verkiezingen met de belofte te breken met de anti-rechtsstatelijke koers van het vorige kabinet. Voor het strengste asielbeleid ooit maakte Jetten al tijdens de formatie een uitzondering. Hoewel zijn partij tegen is, stemde hij in met de uitvoering van de asielnoodmaatregelenwet van Faber. Dat wil zeggen, indien deze wet op een meerderheid kan rekenen in de Eerste Kamer. Fractievoorzitter en voormalig rechter Boris Dittrich (D66) keert zich op principiële gronden tegen de wet Het is nu aan CDA-minister Van den Brink om de wet aan die benodigde meerderheid in de Senaat te helpen. Dit is makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan. De coalitie zelf is ver verwijderd van een meerderheid in de Senaat, maar zelfs als ze die wel zou hebben was het waarschijnlijk niet genoeg. De fractie van D66 heeft al aangekondigd tegen de wet te zullen stemmen. Fractievoorzitter en voormalig rechter Boris Dittrich (D66) keert zich er uit principe tegen. Ook het CDA is kritisch. De christendemocraten hebben principiële bezwaren tegen de in de wet opgenomen strafbaarstelling illegaliteit. Zonder de steun van zijn eigen CDA, lijkt het wetsvoorstel van Van den Brink kansloos in de Senaat. Als het hem niet lukt om zijn eigen partij te overtuigen om de wet bij de stemming volgende week te steunen, koerst hij op een politieke nederlaag af. Maar zelfs als het CDA instemt, is het nog geen gelopen race. Nu de PVV niet langer onderdeel is van het kabinet, lijkt zelfs bij de partij van Geert Wilders de liefde voor streng asielbeleid te bekoelen. Zijn partij liet in het midden of ze de wet nog wel wil steunen. Volgens de uiterst rechtsen zou de asielnoodmaatregelenwet teveel verwaterd zijn door de pogingen van het kabinet om de scherpste randjes van de voorstellen af te veilen. En zo vindt minister Van den Brink zich terug in een situatie waarin hij zijn volledige politiek gewicht in de strijd moet gooien om tegen de zin van zijn eigen partij een wet door de Senaat te loodsen, van een afzender die zijn interesse in misschien wel de belangrijkste politieke erfenis van het vorige kabinet lijkt te zijn verloren. It's not known exactly when this game took place. In a game played on July 1, 1946, the Philadelphia Stars defeated the Baltimore Elite Giants 2-1. The game was played at Shibe Park, known later as Connie Mack Stadium, in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Stars' Bill Cash hit a home run, while the Baltimore Elite Giants' Henry Kimbro had a strong performance. The Philadelphia Stars' Barney Brown pitched a complete game win. The Baltimore Elite Giants were a professional baseball team that played in the Negro leagues from 1920 to 1950. The team was established by Thomas T. Wilson, in Nashville, Tennessee as the semi-pro Nashville Standard Giants on March 26, 1920. The team was renamed the Elite Giants in 1921, and moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1938, where the team remained for the duration of their existence. The team and its fans pronounced the word "Elite" as "ee-light" The Philadelphia Stars were a Negro league baseball team from Philadelphia. The Stars were founded in 1933 when Ed Bolden returned to professional black baseball after being idle since early 1930. The Stars were an independent ball club in 1933, a member of the Negro National League from 1934 until the League's collapse following the 1948 season, and affiliated with the Negro American League from 1949 to 1952. Het slachtoffer van de dodelijke steekpartij op de Tugelaweg in Oost is een 54-jarige Amsterdammer. Dat meldt de politie vandaag. Inmiddels is ook duidelijk dat er voor de steekpartij en verdachte is aangehouden. Het steekincident maakt grote indruk op de buurt. Verschillende buren kwamen vandaag langs om een bloemetje brengen. Die verdachte werd afgelopen nacht al opgepakt. De politie maakte die aanhouding vandaag pas aan het einde van de middag bekend. Een woordvoerder van de politie benadrukt dat het niet precies duidelijk is welke rol de verdachte heeft gespeeld en dat het ook niet zeker is of de man überhaupt betrokken was bij de steekpartij. Verschillende buurtbewoners kwamen vandaag een bloemetje brengen op de plek van het steekincident. "Er is iemand vermoord en vlakbij op de stoep doodgegaan. Dat vind ik heel heftig. Dus ik heb een tulpje uit mijn tuin geplukt. Dat lijkt me het minste wat ik kan doen", vertelt een buurvrouw. De politie kreeg gisteren rond 22.00 uur een melding van een mogelijke vechtpartij op de Tugelaweg. Daar aangekomen troffen agenten op de stoep een zwaargewonde man aan. Pogingen om zijn leven te redden waren tevergeefs: de man overleed ter plekke. In de buurtapp stelde een man die het heeft zien gebeuren de buren op de hoogte, vertelt een buurvrouw vanmorgen. "Hij appte dat er een man op de vlucht was voor een andere man. Hij werd toen geschept door een Canta en is daarna in zijn nek gestoken", vertelt ze. "Heel heftig dat dit gewoon voor de deur gebeurt." Getuigen zagen na de steekpartij een man wegrennen richting het Krugerplein. Het onderzoeksteam komt graag in contact met iedereen die iets heeft gezien of gehoord rond het incident. Nu kunnen de 1500 bewoners van het azc-schip nog ieder uur met de bus van de opvang naar de stad, maar dat is volgende maand afgelopen. Volgens het COA moeten bewoners in het kader van zelfredzaamheid het ov of de fiets nemen. De gemeente stelt dat de busverbinding juist onderdeel was van de gemaakte afspraken met het COA. "Ik vind het verschrikkelijk", zegt een van de bewoners. Hij komt uit Syrië en woont samen met zijn moeder al een tijdje op de MS Galaxy, het cruiseschip waar 1500 vluchtelingen worden opgevangen. Het schip ligt aan de kade in het Westelijk Havengebied, op zo'n veertig minuten afstand van de dichtstbijzijnde bushalte. Ieder uur vertrekt de pendelbus richting de Isolatorweg en het Westerpark. 's Ochtends rijdt de bus iedere drie kwartier. Voor hemzelf is het geen probleem, want hij heeft een fiets. Maar volgens de man wonen er veel oudere mensen op het schip, en mensen die niet kunnen fietsen. Een van die mensen is zijn moeder, met wie hij de bus neemt als zij voor een afspraak in de stad moet zijn. "De bus is een levenslijn", zegt hij. "Mijn moeder denkt erover om met andere vrouwen een protest te organiseren." Zelfredzaamheid Het Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers (COA) zegt dat de pendeldienst onder andere was bedoeld voor schoolgaande kinderen, maar zij zitten volgens de woordvoerder niet meer op deze boot. "In het kader van de zelfredzaamheid van bewoners is de beslissing genomen om te stoppen met de pendeldienst. De bewoners kunnen gebruikmaken van het ov of eigen vervoer", aldus de woordvoerder. Dat valt niet goed bij de bewoners. "Een ramp", noemt één van hen het besluit. "Het is vreselijk voor iedereen die om een reden niet kan fietsen en in de stad moet zijn voor doktersafspraken, juridisch advies of simpelweg hun boodschappen." Lege bus Toegegeven, de bus zit lang niet altijd vol, zegt een man die op weg terug is naar de boot. Toen hij van het COA hoorde dat de pendeldienst wordt opgeheven, heeft hij geprobeerd hen te overtuigen om de bus dan een aantal keren per dag te laten rijden. "Maar daar wilden zij niet naar luisteren." De gemeente Amsterdam zegt er vooralsnog vanuit te gaan dat het COA voor passend vervoer blijft zorgen. "In de afspraken met het COA voor de opvang op de Galaxy is opgenomen dat er vanwege de locatie een verbinding moet zijn met de stad voor mensen die hier behoefte aan hebben. Both of them faced potential expulsion votes after they were accused of sexual misconduct involving former staffers. Swalwell’s resignation came just days after CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle reported multiple allegations against him, including twice raping a former staffer. Swalwell denied the allegations. He dropped out of the California gubernatorial race on Sunday. Als gewone burger moet je immers rondkomen met wat je verdient. Maar volgens Modern Monetary Theory, kortweg MMT, is de vergelijking tussen een huishouden en een overheid fundamenteel onjuist. *Brett Scott* econoom, ondernemer en financieel journalist die na de crisis van 2008 de financiële sector van binnenuit leerde kennen, gebruikt een treffende metafoor. Denk aan eekhoorns en eikenbomen. Wij, gewone burgers, zijn de eekhoorns: we rennen rond om geld te verzamelen en op te potten. En we stellen ons de overheid voor als een grote eekhoorn die hetzelfde doet. Maar de werkelijkheid is anders. De overheid is de eikenboom. Die máakt de eikels. Die wil dat de eekhoorns ze meenemen, want zo verspreidt het bos zich. Net zoals Copernicus aantoonde dat de aarde om de zon draait en niet andersom, draait MMT de gangbare logica om: de overheid geeft eerst geld uit en belast daarna pas. Niet andersom. Belastinggeld is niet de brandstof waarop de overheid draait, het is de rem waarmee ze geld weer uit de economie trekt. Voor veel mensen klinkt dat als ketterij. Margaret Thatcher sprak ooit de beroemde woorden: 'There is no such thing as public money. There is only taxpayers' money.' Maar volgens MMT is dat precies de mythe die conservatieve economen in stand houden om de publieke verbeelding in te perken. Want als burgers doorhebben dat de overheid geld kan creëren, rijst onvermijdelijk de vraag: waarom bezuinigen we dan op zaken als onderwijs en zorg? Een veelgehoorde kritiek op MMT is dat het de deur openzet voor ongebreidelde overheidsuitgaven en daarmee inflatie. Maar dat klopt niet, zegt Scott. MMT stelt juist dat er wel degelijk een grens is. Maar dat niet de hoeveelheid geld beschikbaar, maar de hoeveelheid mensen en middelen in een economie. Zijn er werklozen die aan de slag willen, fabrieken die stilstaan, capaciteit die onbenut blijft? Dan kun je geld in de economie pompen zonder inflatiegevaar. Pas wanneer de economie op volle toeren draait en je er toch geld in blijft pompen, krijg je inflatie. MMT is daarmee geen pleidooi voor onbeperkt uitgeven. Het is een andere manier van kijken. Eentje die de vraag verschuift van 'hebben we genoeg geld?' naar 'hebben we genoeg mensen en middelen?' Several people were killed in a strike on the coastal town of Ansariya. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, Israeli attacks have killed over 2,100 people, wounding nearly 7,000. Over 1 million Lebanese have been displaced, and 40,000 homes have been destroyed or heavily damaged. We go to Beirut, where we’re joined by investigative journalist Lylla Younes. Her family’s village in the southern border municipality of Bint Jbeil was bombed yesterday. “It’s not just real estate that is lost when these homes are destroyed. It’s not just a house. Hezbollah, which was not a party to the talks, made clear it will not abide by any agreement that results from their negotiations. Israel's demand that Hezbollah be disarmed is "anything but reasonable," says Daniel Levy, former Israeli peace negotiator under Prime Ministers Ehud Barak and Yitzhak Rabin. "What [Israel] is doing here is trying to put something that sounds reasonable on the table, but with the intention of embarrassing and humiliating the Lebanese government," which Levy says does not have the capacity to disarm Hezbollah.
