Het Openbaar Ministerie eist een celstraf van 17 jaar en tbs met dwang tegen Timothy B. De 33-jarige man vermoordde begin 2025 zijn moeder in zijn woning aan de Dorpsstraat in Landsmeer. Het zwaar verminkte lichaam van de vrouw werd na een urenlange vermissing gevonden in de badkuip. B. zegt zich er niets meer van te kunnen herinneren, maar die verklaring gelooft het Openbaar Ministerie niet. "Ik wil er niets over zeggen. Ik denk niet dat het heel veel uitmaakt wat ik zal zeggen. Het is al gebeurd, ik kan het niet terugdraaien en ik wil het daarbij laten", zegt Timothy B. tegen de rechtbank over het omvangrijke dossier. De man wordt verdacht van de moord op zijn moeder in zijn woning in Landsmeer. B. heeft de verdenkingen eerder al bekend en herhaalde vandaag dat de aanleiding moet worden gezocht in een gesprek over vermeend seksueel misbruik door moeder. De vrouw was voor een gesprek over de financiën naar zijn woning gekomen en begon daar volgens B. juist over de schulden van haar ex-partner, zijn vader. Seksueel misbruik "Toen heb ik gezegd dat ze ook geen lieverdje is geweest en ben ik over het misbruik begonnen. Ze begon te lachen en zei: 'Je bent er toch groot mee geworden'? Toen heb ik een wapen gepakt, maar wat er daarna is gebeurd weet ik niet meer", vertelde B. vandaag.  Een buurvrouw hoort die avond twee schoten, maar kan het geluid niet plaatsen. Haar man denkt het om vuurwerk gaat, maar de politie gaat ervan uit dat het de kogels zijn waarmee de vrouw door haar hoofd is geschoten. Vrouw was al vermist Haar nietsvermoedende partner geeft haar die avond, rond twaalf uur 's nachts, als vermist op. De politie begint een zoektocht naar de vrouw en treft haar auto op een parkeerplaats in Noord aan. Later die dag vertrouwt de ex-partner van B. het niet en gaat samen met een vriend naar de woning van de man in Landsmeer. Al videobellend met de familie van het slachtoffer treffen ze de deuren van de wc en badkamer dicht aan. In een prullenbak vinden ze een bebloed vuurwapen en kledingstukken van de vrouw. De politie wordt ingeschakeld en zij vinden het lichaam van de vrouw uiteindelijk in bad aan. In het dossier staat de hoeveelheid bloed in de ruimte beschreven, er stond een zaag tegen de rand van de badkuip en er waren meerdere messen in de ruimte. De onderbenen van de vrouw waren weg en er was snijletsel in haar hals en onderrug. Kort daarna wordt Timothy B. aangehouden voor de moord op zijn moeder. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat de vrouw om het leven is gebracht door twee schotwonden in haar hoofd en meerdere steekwonden in wang, nek en hals heeft. Het is niet duidelijk in welke volgorde het letsel is aangebracht. Wel had de vrouw verwondingen op haar armen wat wijst op afweerletsel. Het afzagen van de onderbenen is na de dood gebeurd.  B. weet naar eigen zeggen alleen nog dat hij een vuurwapen uit de keukenla pakte op zijn moeder richtte. "Ik stond in de keuken en zij zat op een stoel, het was op vier of vijf meter afstand." Maar hoe zijn moeder uiteindelijk in bad terecht is gekomen en wat er met haar onderbenen is gebeurd is, weet hij niet meer.  Deskundigen van het Pieter Baan Centrum hebben een antisociale persoonlijkheidsstoornis, in combinatie met middelengebruik, bij B. vastgesteld. Maar dat kan volgens hen niet hebben doorgewerkt in zijn handelen. Ook kan er geen oorzaak worden vastgesteld voor het geheugenverlies. De zaal was vandaag gevuld met familie en nabestaanden. Onder meer de zus van B., haar partner en hun oma maakten gebruik van hun spreekrecht. Oma: "Ik ben niet alleen mijn dochter kwijtgeraakt, maar ik ben ook jou kwijt. Jij mijn kleinzoon, je was ook mijn vlees en bloed. Ik heb je vastgehouden en geknuffeld, maar nu zit je daar als de moordenaar van mijn kind." "Mijn leven zal sinds 8 januari 2025 nooit meer hetzelfde zijn. Jij was mijn broer, en nu ben jij een vreemde. Hoe kan ik een vreemde nog vertrouwen als ik mijn eigen broer niet meer kan vertrouwen", vertelde B's zus. B. heeft geen behoefte te reageren op de verklaringen van zijn familie. Wel zei hij dat het naar omstandigheden goed gaat in de gevangenis. Als de rechtbank ingaat op het verleden van B. blijkt dat hij in verschillende instellingen heeft gezeten, op jonge leeftijd cannabis, coke en xtc gebruikte en is veroordeeld voor de overval op een snackbar. Ship traffic has been halted again in the Strait of Hormuz after President Trump ordered the U.S. military to begin a naval blockade of all Iranian ports and coastal areas starting Monday at 10 a.m. ET. Iran denounced Trump's move as an illegal act amounting to "piracy" and has threatened to strike Gulf ports in retaliation. Trump ordered the blockade after the U.S. and Iran failed to reach a deal to end the war following 21 hours of talks in Islamabad, Pakistan. Global oil prices jumped after Trump announced the blockade.

A car park in Leicester may not sound like a fitting burial spot for a monarch, but in 2012, that’s exactly where archaeologists expected to find him. After just six hours of digging, they struck gold (well… bones). Carbon-14 dating suggested the remains were from the late 15th century, but initially appeared a few decades older than Richard III. The clue came from diet. Isotopes in the bones revealed a high-protein, seafood-rich diet, typical of someone living a wealthy, high-status life. This type of diet also affects how carbon-14 accumulates, explaining the apparent age discrepancy. With this in mind, scientists concluded the skeleton was almost certainly Richard III, and DNA from his distant relative, Michael Ibsen, confirmed the final match.

Het maken van de video's begon voor Yasar Kocyigit, de fruitman van de supermarkt, als een grap. Inmiddels is het veel meer dan dat. Elke donderdag komt er een cameraman die helpt bij het maken van professionele video's van Yasar en zijn collega's. In de video's vertellen de medewerkers over kortingen of nieuwe producten van die week door middel van sketches of door in te spelen op trends. "Elke dag praten we met een cameraman, hoe en wat gaan we deze week doen? Het is niet gelijk bam." Sinds het maken van de video's is het in de winkel een stuk drukker geworden. "Er komen klanten van ver alleen door de video's, die vragen of ze kennis mogen maken", vertelt Kocyigit. Toch is niet iedereen even blij met de toeloop. "Sinds de video's is de winkel wel drukker geworden en ik had laatst dat er een rij was. Dat was ik niet gewend. Dat je dan in de rij moet staan om boodschappen te doen, dat is niet echt fijn", vertelt een vaste klant. Vier nachtclubs bieden sinds kort een zogeheten Nachtpas aan. Dat is een abonnement van 24,50 euro per maand waarmee Amsterdammers onbeperkt kunnen langskomen. Steeds meer jongeren vinden clubben tegenwoordig te duur. Dit abonnement moet ze weer terug de club in krijgen. Moktar Nabil, eigenaar van nachtclub Garage Noord, is een van de initiatiefnemers. "We zien dat alles gewoon steeds duurder wordt, en dat mensen daarom minder uitgaan", vertelt hij. Dat erkennen sommige twintigers op straat ook. "Het is heel duur, dus ik ga daarom niet meer uit." Een ander doet het alleen nog in de zomer. Clubs Nachbar, Skatecafe, en Radio Radio doen ook mee met de Nachtpas. Het spreekt sommigen wel aan. "Ik kan dat bedrag wel missen ja", vertelt een man. "Wat ik zeg, het kost geen knoop." Toeristen "We zijn allemaal echt wel bereid om wat in te leveren en te begrijpen dat je wat minder voor je ticketing vraagt", zegt clubeigenaar Nabil. "Maar die toeristen, die mogen gewoon lekker betalen." De eerste 150 Nachtpassen waren meteen na lancering uitverkocht. De vier nachtclubs die deelnemen kijken komende tijd aan hoe dat gaat. The U.S. hasn't had a military draft since 1973, but it still maintains a registry of eligible men in case the draft is restored. New rules around automatic military draft registration were tucked into the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act. We are joined by Edward Hasbrouck, an organizer with the Anti-Draft Coalition, which opposes the plan for automatic draft registration and is calling for repeal of the Military Selective Service Act. "The important thing is to take the draft off the table, remove it from the arsenal of war planning. Forcing the government to confront the question, before they make wars, of whether enough people will fight them actually constrains wars before they happen," says Hasbrouck. Two of the fired judges, Roopal Patel and Nina Froes, had each dismissed high-profile cases brought by the government against international students who had advocated for Palestinian rights, Rümeysa Öztürk and Mohsen Mahdawi. Around 100 immigration judges have been fired by the Trump administration. Firings in previous administrations were rare. The Trump administration is eroding "the concept of procedural due process, the idea that you get to have a hearing in the United States" by "firing judges that it perceived as being opposed to the administration's stated goal to deport as many people as possible with the least amount of due process possible," says Carmen Maria Rey Caldas, a former immigration judge in New York who was fired in August. The firing of so many immigration judges is also "egregious" because noncitizens are "going to be subject to the ruling of judges that are under pressure," says Cyrus Mehta, an attorney who represents Palestinian activist Mohsen Mahdawi. His campaign was supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Trump administration. Tens of thousands gathered in Budapest on Sunday to celebrate the victory over Orbán. "Everybody was partying on the streets. Strangers were hugging each other. Music, drinks, cars honking. Voor tienduizenden ernstig zieke long-covidpatiënten lijkt er eind vorig jaar goed nieuws te zijn. Nederlandse onderzoekers melden significante verbeteringen bij patiënten die een verdovingsmiddel toegediend krijgen. In de media verschijnen berichten dat een variant van lidocaïne zou helpen tegen postcovid-klachten en in de talkshow Eva noemt host Eva Jinek het nieuwe middel zelfs 'de heilige graal'. Zembla onderzoekt deze behandeling en spreekt met artsen, deskundigen en patiënten over de werking, veiligheid en onderbouwing ervan. De behandeling wordt sinds de zomer van 2024 voorgeschreven en patiënten dienen het middel meerdere keren per dag zelf toe. Patiënten die het middel gebruiken, lidocaïne waaraan een suikermolecuul is toegevoegd, melden uiteenlopende ervaringen. Zembla spreekt met ruim twintig patiënten die het medicijn voorgeschreven krijgen via een pijnkliniek. Een groot deel van hen zegt dat het tijdens of na het injecteren misgaat. Zij beschrijven klachten zoals ongecontroleerde schokken, epileptische verschijnselen, flauwvallen en tijdelijke verlammingsverschijnselen. De Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Jeugd roept patiënten met dergelijke ervaringen op zich te melden. De injectievloeistof bestaat uit lidocaïne waaraan een suikermolecuul is toegevoegd. De behandelende kliniek acht het aangepaste middel veilig genoeg om te verstrekken. Deskundigen spreken dit tegen en stellen dat de aangepaste samenstelling als nieuw geneesmiddel onderzocht had moeten worden voordat het op grote schaal werd toegepast bij patiënten. Zembla onderzoekt ook de manier waarop gegevens van patiënten zijn verzameld. Meer dan honderd patiënten worden gedurende maanden gevolgd, waarbij onder meer bloed wordt afgenomen en dagelijks klachten moeten worden geregistreerd. Volgens experts wijst deze systematische aanpak op medisch-wetenschappelijk onderzoek. In dat geval zou vooraf toestemming nodig zijn geweest van een Medisch Ethische Toetsingscommissie, die onder andere de veiligheid voor patiënten beoordeelt. Daarnaast speelt de vraag of er sprake is van belangenverstrengeling. De behandelaars hebben een patent op de gebruikte lidocaïne-variant, die per injectie kosten met zich meebrengt en niet wordt vergoed door de zorgverzekering. Volgens deskundigen is het van belang dat behandelaars en onderzoekers geen financieel belang hebben bij de behandeling of de uitkomst van onderzoek. De afgelopen maanden is er toenemende aandacht voor de behandeling en de rol van de kliniek. Zo verschijnt er een kritische publicatie van Follow the Money, wordt er een wetenschappelijk artikel teruggetrokken en is de Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Jeugd een onderzoek gestart. Iran denounced Trump's move as an illegal act amounting to "piracy" and has threatened to strike Gulf ports in retaliation. Trump ordered the blockade after the U.S. and Iran failed to reach a deal to end the war following 21 hours of talks in Islamabad, Pakistan. Global oil prices jumped after Trump announced the blockade. Ervand Abrahamian, professor emeritus of history at the Graduate Center at the City University of New York, predicts "the U.S. will start bombing Iranian oil installations. Iran will retaliate by bombing the Gulf oil installations, gas installations. The oil prices then could really zoom up. Some people expect it to reach $200 a barrel." Na de gedwongen sluiting van een horecazaak op de Javastraat waar de ratten over de toonbank krioelden, wordt er gekeken naar een nieuwe manier van bestrijding: fretten. In Rotterdam zijn ze hier al mee bezig en als het aan Ja21 ligt, gebeurt dit straks ook in Amsterdam. Volgens rattenvanger Nico, die al jaren fretten gebruikt, is het een heilig middel. Op de Javastraat rent hond Snack zijn neus achterna. De hond van rattenvanger Nico Kraaijeveld is getraind om ratten op te sporen en hier hoeft hij weinig moeite voor te doen. Al kwispelend snuffelt hij langs de gevels en hoekjes van de straat. Hij blijft staan, precies op de plek waar de horecazaak onlangs gedwongen de deuren moest sluiten, en dan weet Nico genoeg: "Hier zitten ze ook!" Het is precies het soort tafereel dat Ja21 voor ogen heeft. De partij heeft schriftelijke vragen ingediend over de mogelijkheid van het inzetten van fretten als oplossing voor het rattenprobleem in de stad. Lijsttrekker Sytze Rijpkema verwijst hierbij naar een succesvolle proef die door de Rotterdamse gemeenteraad is aangenomen. Natuurlijke vijand Samen met zijn fretten en drie honden bestrijdt Nico het rattenprobleem in Rotterdam. Volgens hem is het een goede methode, maar niet de enige oplossing: "Het is een hele mooie aanvulling op de bestrijdingsmiddelen die er al zijn, maar we kunnen niet overal terecht met fretten." Fretten zijn de natuurlijke vijand van de rat, en met hun slanke lijf kunnen de dieren overal komen waar de ratten zitten. De fretten drijven zo de knaagdieren naar buiten. Eenmaal buiten worden de ratten direct door de honden gedood, of gevangen en later gedood. De fretten maken soms zelf al een rat dood ondergronds, maar hun voornaamste rol is opjagen. Op deze manier kunnen er tientallen ratten op één dag worden afgemaakt. Volgens Nico is de methode een stuk diervriendelijker dan de gangbare aanpak met gif: "Met gif lopen ze vier à vijf dagen te zwalken. Dat is geen diervriendelijke manier." Zijn honden maken de ratten daarentegen binnen enkele seconden af. "De hondjes vinden het geweldig." Toch is niet iedereen overtuigd. Dierenwelzijnsorganisaties plaatsen vraagtekens bij methodes waarbij dieren worden ingezet om andere dieren te doden. Het opjagen en doden door honden en fretten kan ook stress veroorzaken In dichtbebouwde gebieden is de methode minder effectief. Zo besloot Zoetermeer na overleg met Rotterdam er juist van af te zien. Of Amsterdam geschikt terrein heeft voor deze aanpak, moet nog blijken. Het college van B&W heeft nog niet gereageerd op de vragen van Ja21.
