Het is misschien wel een van de bekendste beelden van de stad. Het beeld van Atlas, die - met de grootst mogelijke moeite - een hemelbol op zijn schouders draagt. Sinds anderhalf jaar verblijft het bronzen beeld niet meer op het dak van het Paleis op de Dam, maar in de achtertuin van een restaurateur in Antwerpen. In mei keert Atlas, met een nieuw kleurtje, terug op zijn vertrouwde plek. Het bovenste deel van Atlas is op dit moment nog geketend aan een steiger op wielen. Zijn benen staan er een paar meter naast. Het hemelgewelf, dat hij normaal gesproken draagt, ligt even verderop in de tuin van restaurateur Derk Biront. Een uitgelezen kans om het eens beeld van dichtbij te bekijken, want normaal gesproken staat Atlas op zo'n 40 meter hoogte. Wat opvalt is het oog voor detail. Hoewel ze wisten dat niemand het beeld van dichtbij zou zien, is er aan elk klein teken van krachtsinspanning (aangespannen spieren, opgezwollen aderen, gekromde tenen) gedacht. "Je zou denken dat het niet nodig is op deze schaal", zegt Biront. "Maar als dat er allemaal niet zou zijn, dan zou je dat ook wel zien. Zelfs van grote afstand." Last op de schouders Het beeld van Atlas - een van de eerste goden uit de Griekse mythologie - is inmiddels iets meer dan 360 jaar oud. Volgens de legende probeert hij een nieuwe generatie goden van de troon te stoten. Wanneer dat mislukt, moet hij voor straf het universum op zijn schouders dragen. Iets wat vergelijkbaar was met de last van het stadsbestuur in de 17e eeuw, vonden de burgemeesters die het toen voor het zeggen hadden. En dus wilden ze graag dat er een Atlas op het dak van (toen nog) het stadhuis zou komen. Het kwam in die tijd vaker voor dat westerse machthebbers kunst wilden hebben die naar de Griekse mythologie verwees, al kwam het niet vaak voor dat er voor een beeld van Atlas gekozen werd. In de loop der jaren werd Atlas een herkenbaar beeld in de stad. "Er zijn überhaupt niet veel bekende beelden in Nederland", zegt conservator Alice Taagten. "We zijn niet een land dat heel veel standbeelden maakt. Maar deze hebben we dus wel. Over deze Atlas bestaan veel legendes, bijvoorbeeld dat de wereld vergaat als hij die bol van het dak laat vallen. Dat is gelukkig nog nooit gebeurd." Onderhoud Wel was het beeld op een gegeven moment dringend aan een onderhoudsbeurt toe. Voor het eerst sinds 1916 wordt het daarom gerestaureerd. Niet op het dak, maar in de buurt van Antwerpen dus. Uitgerekend de stad waar de ontwerper van het beeld, Quellinus, zijn hele leven woonde. Kon het beeld niet dichter bij huis gemaakt worden? "Nee", zegt Rijksbouwmeester Francesco Veenstra. Volgens hem zijn er in Noord-Europa bijna geen mensen te vinden die zoiets kunnen. "Voor een restauratie van deze omvang moet je wel op zoek gaan naar mensen die weten hoe je met dit soort beelden om moet gaan." En daarom kwam het Rijksvastgoedbedrijf bij Derek Bimont uit. Hij studeerde geschiedenis, maar deed ook veel ervaring op met het herstellen van oud brons. "Je moet snappen met wat voor beelden je werkt, weten hoe ze ooit gemaakt zijn en hoe de constructie werkt. Maar je moet ook weten hoe ze in loop der jaren zijn aangetast." En dat was bij dit beeld zeker nodig, want Atlas had door de zware luchtvervuiling door de eeuwen heen een lichtgroene kleur gekregen. Na de restauratie heeft het beeld een donkergroene kleur en lijkt het weer meer op de oorspronkelijke versie uit 1665. Daarnaast werd het beeld tijdens de restauratie volledig uitgehold. De mix van baksteen en mortel die in het beeld zat is eruit gehaald omdat er vocht in bleef zitten. Om ervoor te zorgen dat het beeld wel gewoon overeind blijft staan, heeft Biront er een nieuwe constructie van roestvrijstalen buizen ingezet. Terugkeer van Atlas "We missen hem natuurlijk wel", zegt conservator Alice Taagten van het Paleis op de Dam. "Ik fiets elke dag via de Raadhuisstraat naar mijn werk. En dan hoort hij daar echt te staan." Taatgen kan niet wachten tot het beeld, met deze donkerdere kleur, weer op zijn vertrouwde plekje staat. "Bij de beelden die al gerestaureerd zijn, zien we dat je ze van beneden echt veel beter kan zien. Dus ik denk dat dit echt een hele grote verbetering gaat zijn." Volgens de conservator kreeg het paleis de afgelopen maanden al veel vragen van mensen die zich afvroegen waar Atlas bleef. The paint on the Cab is in good condition relative to the Saddle Tank which needs to be repainted but has to be removed to do this. Matching the colour is difficult but I mixed some paint that was very close. I don't want to paint this tank using a Paintbrush. Een supermarkt op de Sam van Houtenstraat in Nieuw-West trekt volop aandacht op social media. Met video’s die miljoenen keren worden bekeken en zo’n 20.000 Instagramvolgers, zorgt de online populariteit inmiddels ook voor extra drukte in de winkel. Het maken van de video's begon voor Yasar Kocyigit, de fruitman van de supermarkt, als een grap. Inmiddels is het veel meer dan dat. Elke donderdag komt er een cameraman die helpt bij het maken van professionele video's van Yasar en zijn collega's. In de video's vertellen de medewerkers over kortingen of nieuwe producten van die week door middel van sketches of door in te spelen op trends. "Elke dag praten we met een cameraman, hoe en wat gaan we deze week doen? Het is niet gelijk bam." Sinds het maken van de video's is het in de winkel een stuk drukker geworden. "Er komen klanten van ver alleen door de video's, die vragen of ze kennis mogen maken", vertelt Kocyigit. Toch is niet iedereen even blij met de toeloop. "Sinds de video's is de winkel wel drukker geworden en ik had laatst dat er een rij was. Dat was ik niet gewend. Dat je dan in de rij moet staan om boodschappen te doen, dat is niet echt fijn", vertelt een vaste klant. In this video I give you a crystal ball from our past. To be more specific, a carburettor from our past, that is also a stupid design. It is a stupid design because on it Yamaha, or more precisely a carburettor and fuel and intake systems company called Teikei tried to make a carburettor do something that a carburetor cannot do. They tried to make it behave like a small and a big carburettor at the same time. This is very similar to what we’re doing with engines today. We are taking small 1.0 liter three cylinder engines and trying to make them have the performance of much larger engines while still maintaining the fuel economy of a 1.0-liter three-cylinder. It looks great on paper, but sadly in practice it’s not so great. History teaches us that twin carburettors attached to single cylinders were quickly replaced by superior and simpler systems and/or fuel injection. They offered no real world benefits and were often hard to tune. But you see there’s a problem. This carburetor comes from my Yamaha TT600R, a kick-start only motorcycle I have a deep and complex emotional and sentimental connection with. At the same time I’m pretty sure that this motorcycle is cursed. Despite working on it for months I can’t get it to start easily and run right. I’m this close to getting rid of it and buying something more modern but I just can’t give up on it and I keep giving it one more chance. I replaced nearly every electrical component and bought two different aftermarket ignition boxes and I have improved things, but I can’t tune this carburetor. I’m not a carburetor tuning guru but I’m also definitely not a beginner. I got a car engine to run on motorcycle carbs and have done numerous carb rebuilds and tunes both on four-stroke and two stroke bikes. And so I said I’m going to install a completely different carburetor onto this motorcycle. That’s the thing it needs to be good, it’s not the fact that it’s a 26 year old hunk of junk. But the main obstacle I have towards this goal is that the tt 600r wasn’t a global model and it was never very popular so the aftermarket is super weak. Yamaha themselves don’t make the vast majority of parts for it. Basically nobody really cares about this bike anymore. Sanity and objetivty are clearly telling me to get a different bike. But sanity and objectivity aren’t fun. And so I decided to undertake a big DIY adventure to solve this problem. To do something that I have never done before and this is to design and make from scratch a complex flexible rubber intake duct. As you can see I have done it in the end but it was NOT straightforward. However I did learn many very valuable interesting lessons all of which I will share in this video to help you achieve the same results so that you to can adapt almost any carburettor or throttle body to any engine and or airbox of your choice, or make any other kind of custom intake hoses and/or ducts you may need. Before I even started the process, I decided that I would 3d print the intake ducts using TPU filament on my Bambulab H2D. I already printed some small and simple TPU gaskets and seals so I thought how hard it can be to print a whole intake duct? In this video I show you the entire process of creating flexible, strong, fuel, temperature and coolant resistant hoses and pipes from scratch using simple but effective 3d printing and 3d drawing techniques. The video includes everything from clever 3d drawing techniques in Onshape that allow you to copy extremely complex shapes without relying on 3d scanning, to the exact print settings and procedures as well as filament loading and drying techniques that will give you 100% consistent parts with strength that is almost impossible to believe. So in case you need to create a completely custom hose or pipe for pretty much any application, you will find all the info in this video. Jordi van de Bussche, bekend van zijn YouTube-video's onder de naam Kwebbelkop, heeft in een brief aan de gemeenteraad gevraagd of hij met zijn mini-auto tóch op de pont mag. De gemeente kondigde onlangs aan het verbod van brommobielen op de pont te gaan handhaven, maar volgens Van de Bussche is dat niet realistisch. Met de pont duurt de overtocht een kwartier, zonder de pont moet Van de Bussche straks een klein uur rijden om van zijn huis in Noord bij het Centraal Station te komen. "Ik vind het jammer voor mezelf, maar ook voor de 4600 Amsterdammers die hier echt last van gaan krijgen." En dus heeft hij een brief geschreven aan de gemeenteraad om bezwaar te maken en met het verzoek om een uitzondering te maken voor mensen die in Noord wonen of werken. Hij kan wel een paar oplossingen bedenken: een Biro-vak op de pont, of een ontheffing die alleen geldig is in de daluren. "Maar dit slaat nergens op." Verbieden en handhaven Brommobielen waren eigenlijk altijd al verboden op de pont, maar wethouder Van der Horst kondigde in september vorig jaar aan dit verbod ook te gaan handhaven. "De ponten en de pont-aanlandingen worden steeds drukker met voetgangers en fietsers", zei Van der Horst toen. "Ik vind het onverantwoord om tussen al die fietsers en wandelaars, waar ook kinderen en honden tussen staan, zulke grote wagens te laten rijden." Het verbod wordt nu nog niet gehandhaafd. Voorlopig worden er medewerkers ingezet om eigenaren van de mini-auto's te informeren over de nieuwe regels. Wanneer er beboet gaat worden, is nog onduidelijk. Meer dan genoeg plek Van de Bussche kan zich wel voorstellen dat een Biro veel ruimte inneemt, maar volgens de Youtuber houden bakfietsen minstens zoveel plek bezet. "Ik vind het onnozel, er is meer dan genoeg plek." Daarnaast vindt hij het niet passen bij de autoluwe ambities van de stad, omdat de brommobielen juist elektrisch zijn en mensen nu weer 'noodgedwongen hun auto moeten pakken'. De boeten voor mensen met een brommobiel op de pont bedraagt straks 140 euro. My heart has constantly overflowed with waves of music, and this natural flow of spontaneity—what ‘Nisarga Lahari’ literally means—continues to guide me, shaping even my compositions today. This spontaneity has been my constant strength, the very force that has carried me to the heights I have been blessed to reach. While ‘Vande Guru Paramparaam’ and the other series are the fruits of organised effort, disciplined practice, and structured preparation, this series is different. Op de asielboot de MS Galaxy in het Westelijk Havengebied is vandaag een sportplek geopend voor de 1500 bewoners. De initiatiefnemers hopen hiermee de opvang kind- en jeugdvriendelijker te maken. "Het idee is dat jongeren hun sportspullen hier halen en lekker aan de gang gaan op de kade", zegt Aranka van der Pol, de initiatiefnemer van de sportcontainer. Op de planken achter in de container liggen onder andere voetballen, bidons. rackets, bokshandschoenen en basketballen klaar voor de 1500 bewoners van de asielboot. Het is vooral bedoeld voor jongeren die hier wonen, omdat er voor hen vaak weinig te doen is.  Omar uit Syrië werkt in de koffiebar op het schip en hij is enthousiast over de komst van de sportplek. Volgens Omar kan het leven op de boot soms uitzichtloos voelen, omdat mensen hier soms langer dan twee jaar verblijven. "Het is acht kilometer naar het centrum. De meeste bewoners hebben geen fiets en er rijdt hier geen ov. Dus het is lopen, of je komt er niet."  Ook mogen bewoners op deze boot niet zelf koken. "Dat hou je wel even vol, maar op een gegeven moment wil je zelf iets kunnen doen", aldus Omar.  Sport is volgens hem dan ook een goede manier om stress kwijt te raken. "Veel mensen uit mijn gemeenschap zien sport als een luxe, maar hier heb ik gezien dat het heel belangrijk is. Ze geven soms veel geld uit aan adviezen en behandelingen bij deze coaches, die volgens artsen niet altijd bewezen effectief zijn. In sommige gevallen kunnen ze zelfs schadelijke gevolgen hebben. Nieuwsuur sprak met negen artsen, van wie zeven gynaecologen. Zij erkennen dat leefstijladvies waardevol kan zijn, maar benadrukken dat 'hormooncoach' geen beschermde titel is.
