It’s easy to forget to wear sunscreen in the fall and winter, but the sun’s rays can still cause skin damage–like aging and skin cancer–even on cold and cloudy days. That’s why it’s important to find a sunscreen you’ll happily wear year-round.  Wirecutter health writer Nancy Redd joins us to explain what to look for in a face sunscreen and how to find one that feels good on your skin. She breaks down mineral versus chemical formulas, how to layer sunscreen with makeup, and when you can get away wearing body sunscreen on your face.  Plus, we discuss Nancy’s early testing of two sunscreens that include an ingredient newly approved by the FDA. This episode covers:  • The difference between UVB and UVA rays: These two types of ultraviolet rays damage the skin in different ways. UVB causes the skin to burn, while UVA rays play a bigger role in aging skin. Nancy reminds us to think of B for burning and A for aging. • Why you need a  minimum of SPF 30. SPF 30 should shield 97% of the sun’s UVB rays, and is the minimum the American Academy of Dermatology recommends for daily wear. • Look for “broad spectrum” on labels: This means the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Reapply according to the label, generally every two hours. • The best sunscreen is the one you’ll use consistently. Mineral and chemical sunscreens can both protect your skin effectively, but their textures, finishes, and ingredients feel different from person to person. • Sunscreen should go underneath makeup. Apply moisturizer first, then sunscreen, and let it absorb before adding makeup or tinted moisturizer. Makeup with SPF is a useful extra layer, but it shouldn’t replace your primary sunscreen. • Give sunscreen time to settle before judging it. A formula that initially feels greasy or looks shiny may change as it dries down. Testing how it wears with your skin and skincare routine can help you find a better fit. • A new ingredient: The FDA approved a new chemical sunscreen ingredient (bemotrizinol or BEMT) for the first time in 25 years. Nederlandse organisaties stuurden jarenlang kinderen met gedragsproblemen naar een Nederlands 'gezinshuis' in Spanje, waar ze te maken kregen met extreme behandelmethodes en zelfs 'kindermarteling'. Grote jeugdhulpaanbieders, gemeenten en jeugdbeschermingsorganisaties wisten van de methodiek en de verboden vrijheidsbeperkende maatregelen. Israeli settlers backed by IDF soldiers brutally assaulted Palestinian olive farmers and set olive trees ablaze in the village of Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, on Friday. Veteran Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine, a 64-year-old American, was documenting the attack when settlers began beating her. She suffered stab wounds, a broken rib, four broken vertebrae and a severe hand injury. "It looked like they were killing her," says independent American journalist Jasper Nathaniel, who witnessed the attack on Levine and helped intervene. "The Palestinian youth, the shabab, stepped up. They ran out ahead, and they started beating the settlers back by throwing stones at them, which is the only thing that allowed me to then run out front and grab Heidi." According to the Israeli human rights group Yesh Din, Israeli settlers have carried out at least 170 attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since September 27, which marked the start of this year's olive harvest.

Despite initial public support, Wilson faced fierce opposition from the U.S. Senate, especially from Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, who feared the League would compromise American sovereignty. Wilson's refusal to compromise, combined with his deteriorating health and eventual stroke, weakened his political influence. His nationwide speaking tour to rally public backing ended in collapse, and the Senate ultimately rejected the treaty. The United States never joined the League of Nations, which failed to prevent future global conflict. This course explores the purposes of college education through the first great book on the philosophy of education, Plato’s Republic. We read The Republic in conversation with other thinkers including Aristotle, Confucius, John Stuart Mill, Virginia Woolf, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King. For the 325th anniversary of Yale’s founding, we also explore the changing conception of college education at Yale over the centuries and read some of the college’s and the university’s key founding documents. Hundreds of thousands of protesters marched in over 140 cities across France on Saturday, demanding relief from the high cost of living, more funding for public services and improvements to deteriorating schools, among other grievances. Op de Amstelveenseweg test de gemeente of fietsers zich aan een maximumsnelheid van 20 kilometer per uur houden. De proef moet uitwijzen of fietsers uit zichzelf langzamer gaan rijden als de maximumsnelheid duidelijk wordt aangegeven. Maar of dit duidelijk genoeg is, is de vraag. De fietsers die wij spreken zijn niet allemaal op de hoogte van de borden: 'Borden? Ik heb geen idee, ik heb ze niet gezien', zegt een fietser. De keuze voor de Amstelveenseweg is niet toevallig zegt Elise Moeskops, wethouder Verkeer: ''Dit is een vrijliggend, smal en knetterdruk fietspad. Ook kruist het veel zijstraten en gebeuren er regelmatig ongelukken.'' Het doel van de proef is of fietsers daadwerkelijk langzamer gaan rijden als ze worden geconfronteerd met borden. ''We krijgen regelmatig berichten van mensen die niet meer op hun fiets durven te stappen en we willen dus kijken of we dit fietspad veiliger kunnen maken.'' Geen boetes De gemeente deelt tijdens de proef geen boetes uit. Het draait om de vraag of fietsers ook zonder handhaving langzamer gaan rijden. ''We gaan niet de hele stad volhangen met borden van 20 kilometer per uur, zegt Moeskops. ''We willen onderzoeken of er een sociale norm kan ontstaan waarbij fietsers het vanzelfsprekend vinden om langzamer te rijden.  Ze vergelijkt het met door rood rijden: ''We vinden het niet normaal als een automobilist door rood rijdt, maar veel Amsterdammers lopen zelf wel door rood. Hoe fietsers met zo'n norm omgaan, weten we nog niet. Dat willen we onderzoeken.  De meningen onder fietsers lopen uiteen. Sommige fietsers reageren positief op de proef, anderen twijfelen aan het effect: ''Het is dweilen met de kraan open, want iedereen rijdt hier elektrisch'', zegt een fietser. Een andere vrouw is nog stelliger: ''Amsterdammers zijn toch teringlijders op de fiets.'' Raasdorp is een verkeersknooppunt aan de westkant van de stad en ligt (met de auto) bijna 25 kilometer verderop ligt. "Dit is wel een hele slechte fout", vertelt een jongen die uit de buurt komt. "Raasdorp kent niemand hier", zegt hij lachend. Maar goed, we zijn allemaal mensen een foutje kan gebeuren, maar daar denkt een langsrijdende Noordeling anders over. "Ik vind dit echt belachelijk dat dit gebeurt. Dit checkt dan toch nog iemand", zegt hij bijna boos. Het lichaam van de vermiste Hajar werd vrijdagochtend gevonden in een koffer in het water van de Amstel, dat laat de politie weten. Voor de politie is er in de zaak nog altijd veel onduidelijk. Zo weten ze niet precies wat Hajar is overkomen, waar zij is overleden en heeft de politie ook nog geen beeld van de onbekende man met wie ze voor het laatst is gezien bij de Rai. Ook de nabestaanden van Hajar roepen mensen die iets gezien hebben op zich te melden bij de politie, dit laat Wout Dekker van Namens de Familie aan AT5 weten. Hajar is op zondag 4 oktober voor het laatst in leven gezien in de buurt van de Rai in Zuid. Ze was volgens de politie met een onbekende man op de fiets vertrokken richting Buitenveldert. Wie die man is en ook wat voor rol hij heeft gespeeld bij haar vermissing en uiteindelijke overlijden is voor de politie nog niet duidelijk. De politie heeft verschillende technische en tactische opsporingsmiddelen ingezet, maar heeft nog geen beeld van wat de 29-jarige vrouw precies is overkomen. "Ik snap dat mensen heel graag willen dat wij dat al helemaal invullen, maar in het kader van het onderzoek dat ik dus niet wil schaden, ga ik daar niet heel veel meer over zeggen. En toch hoop ik dat mensen nog steeds zullen meedenken", laat Lex van Liebergen, woordvoerder van de politie, weten. Rechercheurs proberen een tijdlijn te maken van het moment dat ze vermist raakte tot aan het moment dat ze overleden werd aangetroffen in de koffer aan de Amsteldijk afgelopen vrijdagochtend. Zaterdag werd via berichten uit de buurtapp duidelijk dat de politie aan omwonenden van de Amsteldijk ter hoogte van het Martin Luther Kingpark had gevraagd of zij de afgelopen weken iets verdachts hebben gezien met een koffer. De politie kon dat van het weekend nog niet bevestigen, maar doet dat nu wel. In welke hoedanigheid de vrouw is aangetroffen, maakt de politie niet bekend. Hulp van publiek hard nodig Mensen in de stad hoeven volgens van Liebergen niet extra bang te zijn: "Zoiets komt niet elke dag voor. We zijn echt met man en macht aan het werken om de dader op te sporen. Hopelijk kunnen we snel iemand pakken." Vanwege de vele onduidelijkheden vraagt de politie de hulp van het publiek. Iedereen die de vrouw na 4 oktober mogelijk nog gezien heeft of die de beschikking heeft over camerabeelden waar zij mogelijk op staat, wordt dringend verzocht om informatie te delen.
