Trop in an effort to encourage children’s interest in nature. It portrays the narrative of a young boy on a weekend trip to a farm where he meets and learns about various animals thus connecting himself to nature. The boy is guided along his journey by the famous nursery rhyme “Old MacDonald had a Farm.” Travis Johnson and the Song Spinners; a 1930’s folk quartet, recorded this version of the tune. It is important to note this film is missing it’s original soundtrack. J.D. Trop; a New York born producer and writer, was known for titles such 1926’s “Keep Going” and 1928’s “Riders of Vengeance.” The film shows life for youth in the 1950’s drawing a comparison between adolescent entertainment and recreation in the city versus the in country. The Trump administration’s budget request includes funding for F-35 stealth fighter jets, new warships and President Trump’s “Golden Dome” missile defense shield, among other priorities. “All it means is buying more weapons for more,” says Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen. “It’s beyond the wildest dreams of the military-industrial complex.” The budget proposal also includes deep cuts to social programs. We also speak with Josh Paul, a former State Department official involved in arms sales who resigned in 2023 over Israel-Palestine policy. Twelve hours ahead of the deadline, the president posted on social media, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.” Iran has blocked most maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the U.S.-Israeli war, leading to a sharp increase in oil and gas prices around the world. Mohammad Eslami, a research fellow at the University of Tehran, and Zeynab Malakouti, a senior fellow at the Global Peace Institute at the National University of Singapore, say Iran is likely to maintain long-term control over the strait even after the fighting stops. “While Donald Trump and the U.S. Army and the Israeli army are focused on the battle, Iranians are thinking about the war,” says Eslami, adding that Iran has prepared for “at least three months of war,” while rising oil prices will make it increasingly difficult for the U.S. to sustain the fighting. “Iran sees the Strait of Hormuz as a longer-term strategic lever, especially for the postwar period,” adds Malakouti, speaking from Shanghai. Het was weer druk in de stad dit paasweekend. TikTokrijen groeien in het centrum en teleurgestelde dagjesmensen zagen dat in het Amsterdamse Bos de bloesem is uitgebloeid. Sommige toeristen stonden vandaag meer dan een uur in de rij voor een frietje. ''Maar het was het waard.'' Vooral bij het beroemde en beruchte filiaal van Fabel Friet in de Negen Straatjes moest je dit weekend geen haast hebben. Eén man timet zijn wachttijd: 40 minuten en nog iets van een kwartier te gaan. "Maar", zegt hij, "ik vecht niet tegen de bierkaai: in plaats van te moeten winkelen, sta ik nu liever in de rij." Ook bij het Chun Café iets verderop in het centrum zit de sfeer er nog goed in. Twee Britten hebben al een uur gewacht op hun friet om de hoek en kunnen na een half uur in de zonnige rij nu ook hun TikTokbroodjes eten. "We gaan kijken of de sandwiches het net zo waard zijn als de friet." Een andere vrouw zegt: "Het is vooral de angst om iets te missen, waarvoor je hier staat." Uitgebloeide bomen Dat je als toerist iets kan missen bleek ook in het Amsterdamse Bos vandaag. Daar kwamen tientallen bezoekers een week te laat. De roze kersenbloesem is inmiddels niet veel meer dan wat kale bomen en een roze knopje hier en daar. "Er is nog weinig van over'', zegt een afdruipende bezoeker. "Ik ben teleurgesteld in mezelf, ik had hier eerder moeten komen", zegt een fotograferende man. Desondanks geven de meeste toeristen de moed niet op. ''Misschien gaan we wel naar nog een andere TikToksensatie'', zegt een van de Britten die al twee rijen heeft gehad. Door de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten blijven de brandstofprijzen stijgen, diesel heeft zelfs een recordhoogte bereikt. En dat merken ondernemers in de stad ook, zoals een rijschoolhouder en een pannenkoekenrestaurant. Met spanning wordt gekeken naar een ultimatum van de VS aan Iran om de cruciale Straat van Hormuz uiterlijk vannacht weer open te stellen voor olietankers. "Ja, natuurlijk maak ik me zorgen over de gestegen prijzen, want de mensen moeten het toch uit de portemonnee halen om te kunnen rijden", zegt rijschoolhouder Erik Pas. "Ik schrijf wel een brief naar Trump." Door de oorlog tussen de Verenigde Staten, Israël en Iran komt er bijna geen brandstof richting Europa waardoor de prijzen steeds verder stijgen. De olieprijzen lopen vandaag nog verder op vanwege de spanningen rond de Straat van Hormuz, de door Iran afgesloten zeestraat in de Perzische Golf waar veel olietankers nu voor anker liggen. Iran laat alleen schepen door die geen banden hebben met Israël of de Verenigde Staten, de landen die eind februari Iran aanvielen. Normaliter wordt een vijfde van de wereldwijde olieconsumptie door de zeestraat vervoerd. De VS hebben een ultimatum gesteld: als de blokkade van Hormuz woensdagnacht om 02.00 uur Nederlandse tijd niet is opgeheven, wordt Iran zwaar gebombardeerd. Voor Pas is benzine de brandstof van zijn bedrijf. Zijn rijschool in Geuzenveld bestaat uit zo'n vijftien lesauto's en nog een heel aantal motoren. Een volle tank kost deze week zeker honderd euro, en zijn instructeurs tanken gemiddeld twee keer per week. "Reken maar uit." Pas verwacht wel dat de benzineprijs binnenkort zal dalen, maar hij betwijfelt of de prijs weer zal zakken tot het bedrag voordat Trump en Netanyahu begonnen met de bombardementen. "Dan zijn we blij, maar dan is het alsnog een kwartje meer dan eerst." Dieselboot over het IJ Ook het pannenkoekenrestaurant dat op een dieselboot over het IJ vaart merkt de gevolgen van de oorlog. De prijs voor een liter diesel is tot recordhoogte gestegen. De boot verbruikt twintig liter per ritje en een volle tank van 4500 liter kost ruim 6000 euro, zo'n 1200 euro meer dan vorige week. Maar de prijs van een pannenkoek verhogen, dat willen ze bij het restaurant nog niet doen. "Mensen moeten hier met de auto naartoe komen of met de trein, overal hebben we de problemen en dat delen we met z'n allen", aldus manager Carlos. Ook Pas wil de prijs voor autorijles niet verhogen. Leerlingen kopen vaak een pakket, dus die prijs ligt vast. "Ik kan ook niet onder een contract uitgaan met een leerling." Naar verwachting blijven de brandstofprijzen komende periode nog stijgen. Rappend of zingend zal je deze vuilnismannen trouwens niet meer tegenkomen, want daar was niet iedereen even blij mee (helaas). Aan de Apollolaan in Zuid zijn drie weken voor Koningsdag al tientallen plekken 'bezet' met krijt en slingers. Dat is wat vroeg vinden ook de bewoners, maar de vrijmarkt in de straat is zo populair dat het anders zomaar te laat kan zijn. "Het is de Leidsestraat van Koningsdag", zegt een buurtbewoner. Een ander vertelt dat de gereserveerde plek voor zijn deur twee jaar geleden verkocht werd. Op maandag 27 april is het weer Koningsdag en wordt er traditiegetrouw van alles verkocht op vrijmarkten door de hele stad. Een van de populairste markten is die in de Apollolaan. En daarom krijten de fanatiekelingen daar nu al hun naam op de stoep, om op Koningsdag zeker te zijn van een goede plaats. Een buurtbewoner vindt het wel vroeg, maar zegt ook: "Als je hier over drie weken komt, begrijp je waarom mensen dat nu doen." Zo vertelde hij over kinderen die na een succesvolle Koningsdag met duizend euro naar huis gingen door hotdogs te verkopen. Een mevrouw die zichzelf vandaag met krijt een plek aan het toe-eigenen is, zegt: "Bizar dat het nu al moet, maar als je over een week komt is alles bezet." Plekken doorverkocht Een bewoner vertelt dat een deel van de stoep voor zijn huis twee jaar geleden is doorverkocht. Op die manier konden mensen tegen betaling een goede plek krijgen voor tijdens de vrijmarkt. "Dat vonden we niet passen bij het Koningsdag gevoel", zegt hij. En daarom hangen er dit jaar papieren voor zijn huis met 'niet te koop en niet te reserveren' erop. Een andere buurtbewoner reageert hier lachend op: "Briljante handel", zegt hij. "Dat zijn vastgoedmannen die dat hebben gedaan." Een andere mevrouw gelooft niet wat ze hoort en zegt: "Voor vijfhonderd euro mogen ze al mijn spullen kopen en mijn plek hebben.
