She was arrested in 2025 as part of the Trump administration's campaign to target student activists and others who advocated for Palestinian rights. Kordia was born in the occupied West Bank and lives in New Jersey. She was arrested in 2024 during the Gaza solidarity protests at Columbia University. The charges against her were dropped the next day, but she was detained in March 2025 by ICE during a routine immigration check-in. "It was supposed to be just a regular meeting with my lawyer [and the] ICE agents. It led to arrest," says Kordia. "They took me in an unmarked car directly to the airport, and they had informed my lawyer that I'm going to upstate New York, but they took me to Texas instead." While in custody, Kordia experienced destitute conditions at the Prairieland Detention Center, including overcrowding, inedible food, inadequate medical care, broken facilities, negligence by guards and more. "The detention center conditions and the ICE agents' methods brought to my mind a lot of bad memories from the West Bank," she says. Bondi, Florida's former attorney general, was a Trump loyalist who openly heaped praise on the president and did away with the long-standing Department of Justice practice of maintaining political independence from the White House. "She came in and did the master's bidding, and she did it poorly," says David Cole, law professor at Georgetown University and former national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union. Her firing comes just months after a heated congressional hearing in which she refused to apologize to Epstein survivors for the DOJ's failure to fully redact their names in released documents. Bondi was subpoenaed to appear before the House Oversight Committee on April 14 to speak about her handling of the Epstein files. "The fact that she has now been run out of office does not mean that she is free of the obligation that every American citizen has to respond to a subpoena and answer questions under oath," says Cole. Experts uit binnen- en buitenland kwamen vanmiddag naar het Vrij Paleis in de Paleisstraat in de binnenstad om te discussiëren over de betekenis van een bijzondere tatoeage. Het ging om de tattoo die vorig jaar werd ontdekt op een 17e-eeuws schilderij van het Amsterdam Museum. "Toen ik het voor het eerst zag, dacht ik: dit is onze Da Vinci Code", zegt tattookoning Henk Schiffmacher. Hij is een van de sprekers op de bijzondere conferentie vandaag. Toen de tatoeage in november vorig jaar ontdekt werd, stuurde Schiffmacher direct een berichtje naar Matt Lodder, docent kunstgeschiedenis aan de University of Essex, gespecialiseerd in tattoo's. "Ik kon het eerst niet geloven", zegt Lodder. "We hebben zo weinig afbeeldingen van tatoeages uit die periode. Het is echt een mysterie." Pelgrimstatoeage Over dat mysterie wordt vandaag iets meer duidelijk. Want eigenlijk zijn alle aanwezigen het er wel over eens: de tattoo beeldt iets komeetachtigs uit. Maar wat het precies is en ook vooral waarom de marktkoopman op het schilderij de tattoo liet zetten? "Ik denk dat het een pelgrimstatoeage is van de ster van Bethlehem, van Jezus' geboorte. Dat lijkt me de beste uitleg", zegt Lodder. "Het is leuk om te weten wat het is, maar het maakt eigenlijk geen fuck uit", zegt Schiffmacher lachend. Dan weer iets serieuzer: "Ik vind het fantastisch, deze middag. Ik ben hier echt heel blij mee. Het is een soort history channel-item. Maar we zijn er nog lang." Of 'we' er wel ooit gaan komen en met zekerheid kunnen zeggen wat de tattoo betekent? "Ja, hoor. Waarom werd baby Lieve, die maar een uur oud was, achtergelaten? En wie zijn haar ouders? In de nieuwe podcast ‘De Vondeling’ gaan we op zoek naar antwoorden. Vanaf 7 april is de podcast te beluisteren op AT5.nl en in jouw favoriete podcast-app. Op een doodgewone maandagmiddag in 2003 horen de twee vriendinnen Masa en Eva babygehuil uit de portiek van de woning van Eva in de Pijp. Als ze dichterbij komen zien ze het goed. Het is een pasgeboren baby, gewikkeld in een plastic tasje. In het ziekenhuis krijgt ze de naam: Lieve. Nu 22 jaar later zoekt Lieve haar ouders, in de nieuwe AT5 podcast De Vondeling. "Haar navelstreng zat er nog aan". Eva en Masa herinneren zich het nog goed. Het is een druilerige maandagmiddag als ze een pasgeboren baby vinden in de Van Ostadestraat in de Pijp. Ze bellen direct de alarmcentrale. Eenmaal in de ambulance, mogen de twee vrouwen niet meer bij de baby komen. "Voor u eigen best wil, zeiden ze. Alsof we ons teveel aan het kind zouden gaan hechten." Het is 22 jaar later als twee vrouwen weer voor het eerst het meisje zien, dat ze destijds vonden. Ze is inmiddels natuurlijk een volwassen vrouw. Een warme omhelzing, een paar tranen en vele herinneringen ophalend gaan de vrouwen weer hun eigen weg. Het is een van de vele ontmoetingen. Rechercheur Gerard van den Haak vertelt wat de politie deed in de zoektocht. "Eerst doen we een buurtonderzoek en kijken we of er camerabeelden zijn. Ook hebben we een oproep gedaan bij Opsporing Verzocht." De politie doet van alles om ook maar iets te weten te komen over Lieve haar biologische ouders, maar het onderzoek loopt al snel vast. De jaren gaan voorbij en als Lieve 12 jaar is, verjaart de zaak en kan de politie strafrechtelijk gezien niks meer doen. Maar de vragen blijven: Waarom ben ik achtergelaten? Waar ben ik geboren?
