The film begins with a husband and wife (Murray and Carver) in their modest home; Murray is washing clothes while his wife works nearby. Some Little Rascals type kids outside are goofing around, launching potatoes using a slingshot. When one of the potatoes hits Murray on the noggin, he resorts to giving the kids a lecture and a spanking. Later they get revenge by siking a pack of dogs on the hapless Murray. At 3:17, an aerial shot of the Mack Sennett Studios changes up the plot -- a producer named Max Katz is seen reading a letter addressed to a Mr. Claude Climax. The letter is from Sennett himself, asking Climax to sign a child for a starring role in a new movie. Another producer becomes aware of Katz's mission and decides to try to sign the kid first. At 4:00 Katz is seen on the phone at the Gold Brick Film Co. while his rival is on the phone in the lobby. The race to sign the kid is on -- with Katz and his rival in different jalopy type race cars. After a ridiculous chase scene, Katz's rival shows up at Murray's house. Murray is busy spanking the hapless child, when Katz shows up and both he and his rival attempt to sign "the kid". Katz succeeds in his mission and at 6:00 the kid is now a star! He is shown on the set of a silent movie, surrounded by beautiful women, a director (played by Vernon Dent) and cameraman (Jack Cooper). The rest of the plot is a bit of a muddle. At 11:06, further mayhem ensues on the set as a wind machine is used with Mack Sennett's cyclorama. This was a spinning scenic backdrop used in silent films. (It's essentially a large, rotating, curved wall that was used to create a sense of depth and movement, often simulating chases or other action sequences. The cyclorama would rotate clockwise while actors ran counter-clockwise, allowing a fixed camera to keep them in frame.) opening is in Mack Sennett's private office, with Sennett himself interviewing directors, actors, would-be comedians and lions. A director tells him of a child he has seen and is told to sign him up. After much trouble this is done and the kid becomes a star. Precies 25 jaar geleden kende Amsterdam een wereldprimeur: om middernacht sloot toenmalig burgemeester Job Cohen het eerste huwelijk voor paren van gelijk geslacht. Afgelopen nacht deed burgemeester Halsema hetzelfde: drie paren gaven elkaar in de Stopera het ja-woord. En in een tijd waarin homo-emancipatie afneemt, heeft dat meer dan alleen symbolische waarde: "Ik hoop dat het een positief voorbeeld is voor alle jonge mensen." Zes keer klonk er vannacht een volmondig 'ja', toen burgemeester Halsema om middernacht drie koppels in de echt verbond, onder toeziend oog van minister-president Rob Jetten en diversiteitswethouder Touria Meliani. "Het was geweldig. We hebben een knuffel gehad van Halsema, de dag kan niet beter!", glunderen de pasgetrouwde Rebecca Heikamp en Sytske van Koeveringe vannacht in de Stopera. Burgemeester Halsema: "Het was zo leuk, het was weemoedig en nostalgisch en hoopvol!" Vijfentwintig jaar eerder gebeurde het voor het eerst, op exact dezelfde plek. In een afgeladen Stopera vol nationale én internationale pers werd wereldgeschiedenis geschreven, al hadden de koppels van toen dat destijds nog niet helemaal door. Dolf Pasker en Gert Kasteel waren een van die stellen: "Ik denk dat we heel erg onder de indruk waren van alles wat er om ons heen gebeurde." Ook Rebecca Heikamp en Sytske van Koeveringe konden het op de ochtend van hun huwelijk nog niet helemaal geloven. Heikamp: "Ik vind het heel leuk om het straks met onze vrienden om ons heen te vieren, maar wat er allemaal bij komt kijken, zoals de interviews en camera's, is ook eng. We wisten het, maar het is toch een beetje onverwacht." Op 1 april 2001 sloot toenmalig burgemeester Job Cohen de eerste vier huwelijken voor paren van gelijk geslacht. Hoewel de bruiden en bruidegommen zelf nauwelijks familie en vrienden mogen meebrengen, is de Stopera afgeladen met genodigden. Een bataljon journalisten, van AT5 tot CNN, verdringt zich om de beste foto en video. Het is twee voor twaalf. Maar in plaats van onverdeelde vreugde heerst en vooralsnog oorverdovende stilte. Met mijlpalen - en de hele wereldpers die over je schouder meekijkt - komen immers zenuwen. Cohen heeft zijn speech te snel uitgesproken en is twee minuten eerder dan gepland klaar. Dan maar twee minuten klappen, net zolang tot de klok middernacht slaat en het 1 april is: de wetswijziging is ingegaan, er mag getrouwd worden. En toen de klok eindelijk twaalf sloeg: "Dat was echt een kippenvelmoment", herinnert Kasteel zich. Pasker: "Echt kippenvel." Job Cohen is er nog altijd trots op: "Dat ik degene ben die het aller-aller-allereerste huwelijk voor personen van hetzelfde geslacht gesloten heb. Er is maar één iemand in de hele wereld die dat kan zeggen, dat ben ik." Heikamp en Van Koeveringe vinden het bijzonder dat ze hun huwelijk voor het oog van zoveel mensen kunnen laten voltrekken. "Ik vind het heel mooi dat het een grotere betekenis heeft voor de stad en de queer-gemeenschap", vertelt Heikamp. "Dat je, los van de liefde naar elkaar, aan iets groters kunt bijdragen. En ik ben groot fan van Halsema, dus wat wil je nog meer!" "Ik wilde sowieso heel graag trouwen", zegt Van Koeveringe. "Dat heb ik tijdens onze datefase ook al aan Rebecca verteld." Heikamp: "Ja, en je zei ook dat je anders met een andere vrouw ging trouwen." "Dat was natuurlijk een beetje bluf", lacht Van Koeveringe. Met Pasker en Kasteel kijken we hun trouwfilmpje van 25 jaar geleden terug: "Ik had wel een beetje een brok in mijn keel, dus mijn 'ja' was een beetje zacht, geloof ik", zegt Pasker. Kasteel: "Maar geen twijfel?" "Pasker: Nee, natuurlijk niet!" "Er is heel veel reden om bij dit jubileum stil te staan", aldus Halsema. Precies 25 jaar geleden kende Amsterdam een wereldprimeur: om middernacht sloot toenmalig burgemeester Job Cohen het eerste huwelijk voor paren van gelijk geslacht. Afgelopen nacht deed burgemeester Halsema hetzelfde: drie paren gaven elkaar in de Stopera het ja-woord. En in een tijd waarin homo-emancipatie afneemt, heeft dat meer dan alleen symbolische waarde: "Ik hoop dat het een positief voorbeeld is voor alle jonge mensen." Zes keer klonk er vannacht een volmondig 'ja', toen burgemeester Halsema om middernacht drie koppels in de echt verbond, onder toeziend oog van minister-president Rob Jetten en diversiteitswethouder Touria Meliani. "Het was geweldig. We hebben een knuffel gehad van Halsema, de dag kan niet beter!", glunderen de pasgetrouwde Rebecca Heikamp en Sytske van Koeveringe vannacht in de Stopera. Burgemeester Halsema: "Het was zo leuk, het was weemoedig en nostalgisch en hoopvol!" Vijfentwintig jaar eerder gebeurde het voor het eerst, op exact dezelfde plek. In een afgeladen Stopera vol nationale én internationale pers werd wereldgeschiedenis geschreven, al hadden de koppels van toen dat destijds nog niet helemaal door. Dolf Pasker en Gert Kasteel waren een van die stellen: "Ik denk dat we heel erg onder de indruk waren van alles wat er om ons heen gebeurde." Ook Rebecca Heikamp en Sytske van Koeveringe konden het op de ochtend van hun huwelijk nog niet helemaal geloven. Heikamp: "Ik vind het heel leuk om het straks met onze vrienden om ons heen te vieren, maar wat er allemaal bij komt kijken, zoals de interviews en camera's, is ook eng. We wisten het, maar het is toch een beetje onverwacht." Twee voor twaalf Op 1 april 2001 sloot toenmalig burgemeester Job Cohen de eerste vier huwelijk voor paren van gelijk geslacht. Hoewel de bruiden en bruidegommen zelf nauwelijks familie en vrienden mogen meebrengen, is de Stopera afgeladen met genodigden. Een bataljon journalisten, van AT5 tot CNN, verdringt zich om de beste foto en video. Het is twee voor twaalf. Maar in plaats van onverdeelde vreugde heerst en vooralsnog oorverdovende stilte. Met mijlpalen - en de hele wereldpers die over je schouder meekijkt - komen immers zenuwen. Cohen heeft zijn speech te snel uitgesproken en is twee minuten eerder dan gepland klaar. Dan maar twee minuten klappen, net zolang tot de klok middernacht slaat en het 1 april is: de wetswijziging is ingegaan, er mag getrouwd worden. En toen de klok eindelijk twaalf sloeg: "Dat was echt een kippenvelmoment", herinnert Kasteel zich. Pasker: "Echt kippenvel." Job Cohen is er nog altijd trots op: "Dat ik degene ben die het aller-aller-allereerste huwelijk voor personen van hetzelfde geslacht gesloten heb. Er is maar één iemand in de hele wereld die dat kan zeggen, dat ben ik." Fan van Halsema Sinds het huwelijk 25 jaar geleden werd opengesteld trouwden 36.000 paren van gelijk geslacht. Aan het begin van dit jaar telde ons land 12.000 mannenparen en 13.000 vrouwenparen. Met 44 per 1000 wonen naar verhouding de meeste getrouwde stellen van gelijk geslacht in Amsterdam. Heikamp en Van Koeveringe vinden het bijzonder dat ze hun huwelijk voor het oog van zoveel mensen kunnen laten voltrekken. "Ik vind het heel mooi dat het een grotere betekenis heeft voor de stad en de queer community", vertelt Heikamp. "Dat je, los van de liefde naar elkaar, aan iets groters kunt bijdragen. En ik ben groot fan van Halsema, dus wat wil je nog meer!"  "Ik wilde sowieso heel graag trouwen", zegt Van Koeveringe. "Dat heb ik tijdens onze datefase ook al aan Rebecca verteld." Heikamp: "Ja, en je zei ook dat je anders met een andere vrouw ging trouwen." "Dat was natuurlijk een beetje bluf", lacht Van Koeveringe.  Met Pasker en Kasteel kijken we hun trouwfilmpje van 25 jaar geleden terug: "Ik had wel een beetje een brok in mijn keel, dus mijn 'ja' was een beetje zacht, geloof ik", zegt Pasker. Kasteel: "Maar geen twijfel?" "Pasker: Nee, natuurlijk niet!" Acceptatie onder druk De zilveren bruiloft van het opengestelde huwelijk komt op een moment dat lgbtiq+-acceptatie niet meer vanzelfsprekend is. En daarmee creëert het label een morele asymmetrie, namelijk: hetzelfde gedrag dat bij een ‘normaal’ persoon wordt veroordeeld, wordt bij een ‘genie’ gedoogd of zelfs bewonderd. Dat ondermijnt niet alleen ethische standaarden, maar ook institutionele checks and balances. In haar boek The Genius Myth ontmantelt Lewis het idee dat uitzonderlijke prestaties voortkomen uit een bijna bovennatuurlijke individuele gave. Het vervormt hoe we succes verklaren, hoe we leiders beoordelen en hoe we falen begrijpen. Lewis benadrukt hoe dit mechanisme machtsmisbruik maskeert en zelfs legitimeert: genialiteit fungeert als moreel schild. Of we – alle zojuist opgedane kennis ten spijt – niet tòch wat genieën nodig hebben om de (nogal) prangende kwesties van deze tijd mee op te kunnen lossen? Nee, is het antwoord. Want door genialiteit te verheffen tot zeldzame eigenschap van enkelen, worden collectieve bijdragen systematisch ondergewaardeerd. Scientists say the best chance we have at finding alien life is to find a planet that looks a lot like Earth that orbits a sun that looks like ours. That’s because as far as life goes we have a sample size of one: our own planet. The trouble is the main way we look for exoplanets is through a method called transit photometry. This looks for tiny changes in the brightness of a star. Our star is VERY bright and Earth is so dim we’d be looking for a really tiny change at JUST the right moment and only if the planet actually moves in front of the star in the first place. De nieuwe gemeenteraad vergadert vandaag voor het eerst. Een deel van de raadsleden heeft vorige periode al in de Stopera gezeten, maar er zijn ook politici die de raadsvergadering voor het eerst meemaken. AT5 sprak hen - vlak voordat ze werden geïnstalleerd - in het programma Stemming op de Stopera. Nora Ait Boubker van D66 zat eerder in de stadsdeelcommissie in Oost. "Het was enorm bijzonder en superleerzaam. Ik was 22 toen ik begon en eigenlijk niet zo heel erg bekend met de politiek. Dus alles was nieuw voor mij, maar we hadden een fantastische commissie en fantastische fractie." Belangrijk geluid Dorle Kok (VVD) stond op plek 3 van de lijst van die partij en de kans was dus groot dat ze in de fractie zou belanden. "Ik denk dat wij als VVD een heel belangrijk geluid in Amsterdam laten horen. Vrijheid vinden we natuurlijk ontzettend belangrijk en dat willen we waarborgen met veiligheid." Naomi Italiaander ging dankzij voorkeursstemmen de raad in. Ze stond op plek 3 en JA21 haalde twee zetels, maar door de voorkeursstemmen ging ze een plek omhoog. "Ik ben hartstikke blij met zo veel stemmen en dat ongelooflijk veel mensen zoveel vertrouwen in mij hebben", zegt ze. "Ook onze favorites maken soms foute keuzes" Tofik Dibi - BIJ1 Bij1-fractievoorzitter Tofik Dibi had in de landelijke fractie van GroenLinks voorheen met Halsema te maken. Later was hij ambtenaar in Nieuw-West, maar daar vertrok hij uiteindelijk, naar eigen zeggen 'in goed overleg'. "Er is een reden waarom ze een van de populairste bestuurders in Nederland is, maar ook onze favorites maken soms foute keuzes", vindt hij. Zijn fractiegenoot Saskia Meiland: "We zijn hier om de gemeenteraad en het bestuur links te houden.
