Bij de brand aan de Nieuwe Hemweg in West zo'n anderhalve week geleden, gingen twee panden volledig verloren. Het pand waar de brand ontstond, van deelscooterbedrijf Felyx en het pand ernaast, waar horeca-ondernemers in gevestigd zaten. Voor de getroffen ondernemers zijn inmiddels meerdere crowdfundings gestart, maar voor nu is het vooral proberen om de draai weer te vinden. Het getroffen pand van The Kitchen Republic ging volledig in vlammen op. Even verderop zit de tweede locatie van de onderneming en hier is het nu passen en meten. "We zijn meer ruimte gewend en het is hier vrij klein, dus we moeten zo snel mogelijk een goede ruimte vinden", vertelt cateraar Rutger Slomp van Stewart&Sally. "Wij hebben helemaal niks meer, dus gewoon weer op 0 beginnen."  Er zijn meerdere ondernemers die in het pand aan het werk zijn en proberen hun draai weer te vinden. The Kitchen Republic huisvest hen, normaal gesproken dus in twee panden, nu nog in één en ook nog het kleinste pand. "We zaten hier vol, we zitten nu eigenlijk te vol", aldus oprichter Bart-Jan Veldhuizen. "Maar iedereen kan zich inleven in wat er gebeurd is en iedereen doet hetzelfde. Daarom zijn ze bereid om even wat meer plaats te maken in tijd en ruimte om iedereen te helpen." Oorzaak niet bekend Het is een onzekere periode. Over de oorzaak van de brand is nog weinig bekend en volgens de brandweer is die ook lastig te achterhalen. Het lijkt erop dat de brand gestart is bij deelscooterbedrijf Felyx, maar voorlopig is daar nog geen uitsluitsel over gegeven. De verzekeringskwestie vraagt dus om geduld van de ondernemers, maar dat is moeilijk op te brengen volgens Veldhuizen. Het is namelijk zaak voor hen dat er snel weer geld verdiend wordt. "Voor heel veel ondernemers is het zo dat ze niet verzekerd waren, of dat er een verzekeringskwestie loopt, claims die nog gedaan moeten worden", somt Veldhuizen op. "Dat kost allemaal tijd en, het klinkt dramatisch en dat is het wellicht ook, maar tijd is de ergste vijand. Het werkt zo dat op het moment je niet kan leveren, je klanten kwijt kunt raken." Daarom helpen ondernemers elkaar en kreeg bakker Sanne Muller van Läcker noodzakelijke hulpmiddelen. "Mensen hebben tijdelijke apparatuur gedoneerd zoals deze uitrolmachine", geeft Muller aan. "Dat was het voornaamste ding waar we vorige week mee bezig waren." Maar geld is voor alle ondernemers het belangrijkst. Daarom zijn er verschillende crowdfundingacties opgezet. A US online money transfer service surveyed over 4,600 people in 25 (or in some cases 26) countries, asking two things: which country has the politest people, and how they rank politeness in the country they live in. We’ve incorporated the results into our video. A number of countries in Europe ranked very highly, with the UK followed by Germany and Sweden. At the other end of the table: Belgium, Italy and Austria took the bottom three places. Interestingly, no country’s self-perception ranking matched its actual position. It’s important to remember that a country not ranking highly doesn’t necessarily mean its people are rude or impolite. The study is based on the personal impressions and experiences of respondents. Some of the countries that scored lower are e.g. popular holiday destinations, such as Italy, Spain and France. Every year, however, they continue to attract masses of visitors, who enjoy the sun, sea, food and nature. Gemeenten luiden de noodklok over een groep jongeren die als ‘onhandelbaar’ wordt beschouwd en voor wie geen plek is in de jeugdzorg in Nederland. De afgelopen jaren werden honderden van hen uit nood ondergebracht op campings, vakantieparken of andere tijdelijke locaties, waar zij dag en nacht worden begeleid. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van Zembla. De kosten van deze noodoplossingen lopen in sommige gevallen op tot tonnen of zelfs een miljoen euro per kind per jaar. Gemeenten noemen deze vorm van afzondering ongewenst, maar zeggen dat er vaak geen alternatief is binnen het huidige jeugdzorgsysteem. In deze video onderzoekt Zembla jongeren die van plek naar plek worden verplaatst binnen de jeugdzorg. Jarenlang gold gesloten jeugdzorg als laatste redmiddel, maar na eerdere onthullingen over misstanden werd besloten deze vorm van zorg af te bouwen. De afbouw van de gesloten jeugdzorg, die uiterlijk in 2030 voltooid moet zijn, verloopt snel, terwijl geschikte alternatieven achterblijven. Hulpverleners en jeugdbeschermers staan daardoor regelmatig voor de keuze om jongeren tijdelijk te plaatsen in vakantiehuisjes, chalets of appartementen, met intensieve een-op-een-begeleiding die continu aanwezig is. Hoe vaak deze zogenoemde alleenplaatsingen in de jeugdzorg voorkomen, was tot voor kort onbekend. Voor het eerst is de omvang van deze vorm van jeugdhulp in Nederland in kaart gebracht door Zembla, dat alle Nederlandse gemeenten benaderde. Op basis van de reacties werd een conservatieve schatting gemaakt van bijna 400 alleenplaatsingen in de afgelopen drie jaar. Het werkelijke aantal ligt naar verwachting hoger. Gemeenten beschouwen deze informatie vaak als gevoelig en registreren deze vorm van jeugdzorg niet structureel. Onderzoek onder een groep jongeren die een-op-een-begeleiding kregen, laat zien hoe deze trajecten in de praktijk verlopen. Sommige jongeren verblijven maandenlang of langer in afzondering, terwijl dagbesteding of passende behandeling ontbreekt. Tegelijkertijd lopen de kosten van deze jeugdzorgtrajecten hoog op door de inzet van permanente begeleiding, soms met meerdere hulpverleners per jongere. Gemeenten geven aan dat deze constructies financieel zwaar drukken op hun begrotingen en dat de effectiviteit ervan ter discussie staat. De groei van deze vorm van jeugdhulp heeft geleid tot een toename van zorgaanbieders die zich richten op intensieve individuele begeleiding. Gemeenten zeggen vaak afhankelijk te zijn van deze aanbieders vanwege het tekort aan plekken in de jeugdzorg. Tegelijkertijd wordt het afzonderen van jongeren door betrokken partijen gezien als schadelijk voor hun ontwikkeling, onder meer omdat zij beperkt contact hebben met de buitenwereld en sterk afhankelijk worden van hun begeleiders. De Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Jeugd stelde eerder vast dat het intensief begeleiden en volgen van jongeren als zeer vrijheidsbeperkend kan worden beschouwd. In sommige gevallen is daarvoor toestemming van een rechter vereist. Recent ingrijpen door de rechter onderstreept de juridische en inhoudelijke vragen die deze praktijk van alleenplaatsingen in de jeugdzorg oproept. Aan de hand van het verhaal van de 17-jarige ‘Lex’ laat Zembla zien hoe jongeren vastlopen in de jeugdzorg. Hij werd op jonge leeftijd uit huis geplaatst en verhuisde meerdere keren tussen verschillende instellingen en noodoplossingen. Hulpverleners beschrijven hun zoektocht naar passende zorg en de dilemma’s waarmee zij te maken hebben in een jeugdzorgsysteem waarin oplossingen niet altijd voorhanden zijn. Carving 60-foot faces into solid granite is no mean feat, but how did Borglum even create the measurements for such a large-scale project to begin with? To scale his sculpture from a small model to the face of a mountain, he relied on a technique dating back to the sculptors of Ancient Greece. Using a mechanical pointing tool, artists could measure precise reference points on a model and transfer them to a much larger surface. A team of workers then spent eight hours a day drilling Borglum’s design into reality, creating the colossal monument we know today as Mount Rushmore National Memorial - a landmark visited by millions every year.

Goat Stew Pie Ingredients 1 kg bone-in goat pieces 1 tsp curry powder 1 tsp dried thyme 2 chicken stock cubes, crumbled 1 tsp sea salt 4 roma tomatoes 2 red capsicum 2 Scotch bonnet (or Habanero) chillies 2 brown onions 4 garlic cloves 1 thumb size piece fresh ginger 2 tbsp peanut oil 2 fresh bay leaves 250ml chicken stock 1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch) 1 tbsp water 400g frozen short crust pastry, thawed 375g frozen puff pastry, thawed 1 egg Method Step 1: Marinate the goat Combine the curry powder, thyme, stock cubes and salt in a small bowl and mix well. Place the goat in a large bowl. Sprinkle the spice mix over the goat and mix well to completely coat all the pieces. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Step 2: Prep the sauce Roughly chop the tomatoes, capsicum, chillies and 1 of the onions and place in a food processor or blender. Process to a smooth paste then set aside. Chop the remaining onion, garlic and ginger. Step 3: Cook the goat Heat the peanut oil in a heavy based saucepan or dutch oven over medium-high heat. Cook the goat for 6-8 minutes, turning to brown well on all sides. Remove the goat and set aside. Then add the onion, garlic, ginger and bay leaves to the pot you cooked the goat in and saute for 4 min stirring often. Add the tomatoes, chilli and capsicum that you blended and bring to a simmer. Cook for 20 minutes, stirring often, until the oil rises to the surface. Return the goat to the pot with the sauce in it and pour in the chicken stock. Place the lid on and reduce the heat to very low. Cook for 2 hours until the meat is falling off the bone. Remove the pot from the heat and remove the meat from the sauce. Then, pick the meat from the bones and add the picked meat back to the pot with the sauce. Place the pot back on the heat over medium low and bring to a simmer. Mix the cornflour and water in a small bowl to make a slurry and add to the stew. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens. Transfer the stew to a bowl and allow to cool. Step 4: Assemble the pies Preheat the oven to 180°C fan forced (355°F). Lightly grease 4 x 200ml capacity (12cm/4.7in) individual pie tins. Cut 4 circles from the shortcrust pastry large enough to line the base of your tins and come up the sides. Press the pastry into the shells and over the edges, then prick the base with a fork. Spoon the cooled filling into the pastry shells. Cut 4 circles from the puff pastry large enough to cover the mounded filling (about 13cm). Press the edges together to enclose, then crimp sealed with the prongs of a fork. Lightly beat the egg in a small bowl then brush over the top of the pies. Cut a 1cm slit in the top with a sharp knife, then place the pies on a tray. Bake the pies for 40-45 mins, until dark golden and puffed. Set aside to cool for at least 5 minutes before enjoying!

In natuurgebied De Bretten in Nieuw-West vond vanmiddag een FunRun plaats voor kinderen met een nierziekte. De run werd georganiseerd door Kidnie, een initiatief van de Nierstichting, en het doel was om zo veel mogelijk geld op te halen voor onderzoek naar geneeswijzen voor nierziekten. Deelnemers konden kiezen tussen 1,6, of 10 kilometer en dat het liefst gehuld in een superheldenoutfit.  Kinderen met een nierziekte hebben op dit moment geen kans op genezing. Ze blijven altijd patiënt, leven met onzekerheid en moeten vervelende behandelingen ondergaan. Kidnie streeft naar genezing van kinderen met een nierziekte, kindvriendelijke behandelingen en het vroeg opsporen van het risico op nierschade bij kinderen. Hun doel is door middel van onderzoek het genezingspercentage binnen tien jaar van 0 naar 25 procent te brengen. David van Bennekom is vader van twee kinderen met een genetische nierziekte en volgt de wetenschappelijke ontwikkelingen op de voet. "We leven in een revolutionaire tijd, want er gebeurt veel op het gebied van gentherapie." David gelooft dat door die vorm van therapie genezing van nierziekten in de toekomst mogelijk zal zijn. "Onderzoek naar gentherapie kost tonnen, maar dat gaan we bij elkaar halen."  Vandaag werd daar al een begin voor gemaakt en werd er meer dan 30.000 euro opgehaald. Diemen viert vandaag haar 800-jarig bestaan. Dat is een stuk ouder dan Amsterdam, dat vorig jaar haar 750-jarige verjaardag vierde. Maar waarom heeft het gebied wat nu Amsterdam is geworden eigenlijk nooit de naam Diemen gekregen? Jaap Haag, historicus en oud-voorzitter van de Historische Kring Diemen, zegt datg er verschillende oorzaken zijn. Het kwam volgens hem door verschillende conflicten, de ligging van beide plaatsen en doordat inwoners van Amsterdam destijds een tolprivilege hadden gekregen. "Dat tolprivilege gaf de Amsterdammers een economisch voordeel ten opzichte werd van de handel en de scheepvaart, vandaar dat Amsterdam ook snel belangrijker werd", legt Haag uit. Hij vindt dat, als inwoner van Diemen, overigens helemaal niet erg. "We zijn eigenlijk wel blij dat het geworden is wat het geworden is." Dat gevoel leeft inderdaad bij veel andere inwoners. "We noemen het een dorp", zegt een aanstaand raadslid van D66. "Een groot dorp. En we zijn trots op het feit dat we dat allemaal zelf mogen bepalen hierzo." Een andere inwoner zegt dat ze het 'absoluut niet' erg vindt dat Amsterdam niet de naam Diemen kreeg. Diemen is de afgelopen eeuwen flink gegroeid en de dorpskern verplaatste zich. Haag vertelt hier over de ontwikkeling van de gemeente:  Met onder meer een optocht en een optreden van Lange Frans en Baas B. wordt de verjaardag van Diemen vandaag gevierd.
