Na verschillende steekproeven die AT5 bij een specifieke afvalbak deed lijkt het daar wel op, maar toch is nog niet iedereen tevreden. Anderhalve maand geleden presenteerde wethouder Hester van Buren (afval) de nieuwe, in samenwerking met stadsreinigers ontwikkelde, afvalbak. De klep van de bak gaat vanzelf dicht na het openen en moet dus niet meer, zoals bij de oude bakken gebeurt, open blijven staan als er door statiegeld-verzamelaars in is gezocht. De afgelopen weken stopte AT5 tien keer bij dezelfde nieuwe prullenbak op het Damrak. In vier van die gevallen stond de klep open, andere keren was de klep dicht. Al die tien keer stonden de andere afvalbakken op het Damrak, die met het oude ontwerp, wel open. Dit weekend is het zover. Lijn 3, de tram die sinds 1902 het westelijk deel van de stad met Oost verbindt, rijdt vandaag voor het laatst tussen de Van Hallstraat en het Flevopark. Zondag gaat de nieuwe dienstregeling van het GVB in, zonder lijn 3 dus. Volgens de vervoerder gaat het ov-aanbod in de stad er juist op vooruit en worden de overstaptijden korter. Drie stadsdelen hebben nog geprobeerd het schrappen van lijn 3 tegen te houden, maar tevergeefs. Onder vaste gebruikers en liefhebbers van tram 3 overheerst vooral teleurstelling. Lijn 3 reed voor het eerst in 1902, tussen de Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat en de Raadhuisstraat. Het was de derde elektrische tramlijn in de stad, en volgde de paardentramlijn tussen de Dam en De Clercqstraat op. Twee jaar later, in 1904 werd de tramlijn verlengd en reed hij tussen de Overtoom en het Weesperpoortstation. Vanwege de voor die tijd uitzonderlijk lange lengte van de lijn, kreeg tram 3 de bijnaam 'Lange Lummel'. Altijd van oost naar west Sindsdien is de lijn vaak aan verandering onderhevig geweest: zo reed tram 3 tot 1989 nog door tot het Flevopark. Na bijna dertig jaar te zijn ingekort tot het Muiderpoortstation, stopt lijn 3 sinds 2018 weer bij het Flevopark. Ondanks meerdere omleggingen, verlengingen en inkortingen, bleef lijn 3 altijd een verbinding tussen west en oost via de buitenring van de stad. In 124-jarige geschiedenis van tram 3 ging het ook wel eens mis: Het schrappen van tram 3 is een gevolg van een nieuwe dienstregeling in de stad, die morgen ingaat. Het GVB stelt dat door de nieuwe routes en het schrappen van lijn 3, er meer ov-aanbod is en reizigers minder hoeven over te stappen. Maar het schrappen van de lijn ging niet zonder slag of stoot. "Lijn 3 moet niet verdwijnen!", liet een vaste gebruiker van lijn 3 weten toen de plannen bekend werden gemaakt. De stadsdelen West, Zuid en Centrum deden een oproep aan het GVB om de plannen niet uit te voeren. "Het is de levensader die dwars door de stad rijdt", schreef stadsdeel West destijds. Verantwoordelijk wethouder Melanie van der Horst (D66) gaf aan de aandachtspunten van de stadsdelen te snappen, maar ook de keuze van het GVB om lijn 3 te schrappen, te begrijpen. Gerri Eickhof Voormalig NOS-verslaggever Gerri Eickhof schreef een boek over de Amsterdamse trams. Zijn favoriete tram is lijn 3. We spraken hem over het schrappen van de oost-westverbinding. "Lijn 3 is de leukste van allemaal", vertelt hij. "Er is zoveel te zien onderweg en het publiek is zo aangenaam afwisselend." Het maakt de boel een stuk minder overzichtelijk volgens hem: "Het is natuurlijk buitengewoon vervelend dat je ongeveer academisch gevormd moet zijn om nog van oost naar west te komen, doordat de route zo wordt opgeknipt", zegt Eickhof. Toch heeft hij er wel begrip voor. "Ik begrijp de afweging wel en ik snap dat er keuzes gemaakt moeten worden." Lijn 3 wordt voor een deel vervangen door lijn 25, de zogenoemde Uithoornlijn. Die lijn wordt verlengd en rijdt door naar station Muiderpoort. Naast de verlenging van de Uithoornlijn, worden er ook vijf buslijnen aangepast. Het zal dus nog even wennen zijn de komende tijd. Vooral bewoners uit west en oost zullen goed moeten uitzoeken hoe ze aan de andere kant van de stad komen. Dit verandert in de dienstregeling van het GVB, vanaf zondag 29 maart: Tram 25 rijdt door naar Oost, in aansluiting op de ontwikkeling van station Zuid Bus 49 wordt doorgetrokken naar Strandeiland en rijdt voortaan ook in de avond en het weekend. Bus 42 ontsluit Cruquius-eiland voortaan volwaardig. Bus 38 gaat via station Noorderpark rijden. Bus 18 biedt een directe verbinding naar werklocatie Nieuwe Meer via station Lelylaan. Bus 62 rijdt niet meer langs de VUmc en -campus. De bereikbaarheid blijft via tram 24 en de streeklijnen rond station Zuid en de Zuidas. Tram 3 vervalt. Reizigers tussen Oost en West behouden goede verbindingen via de lijnen 7, 12, 19 en 25. Tram 24 rijdt niet langer door de Ferdinand Bolstraat en Vijzelstraat. De bowlingbaan aan het Buikslotermeerplein zal worden omgetoverd tot een jongerencentrum, waarbij jongeren de hoofdontwerpers zijn. Hiermee komt er eind aan de langlopende periode van verloedering en leegstand. Voor jongeren, door jongeren. Het is voor Nana (16), Xavi'Yenzo (15) en Jurainey (15) bijzonder om mee te mogen denken aan dit project. "Dit moet eigenlijk een soort safespace voorstellen. Dat is mijn grootste droom", zegt Jurainey. In 2010 waren er plannen voor sloop, maar vanwege geldgebrek bij de gemeente ging dat plan van de baan. Het bowlingcentrum bleef staan en werd in 2016 gekraakt, waardoor het pand inmiddels al bijna tien jaar bewoond wordt. In de loop der jaren werd de toekomst van het pand regelmatig besproken, maar een beslissing bleef lang uit. Coöperatie 5711 roerde zich en kreeg voor elkaar dat er vanuit de gemeenschap plannen gemaakt konden worden over wat er met de bowlingbaan moest gebeuren. In 2023 kregen ze groen licht voor de plannen, nu ligt er een eerste concept. Er wordt de komende maanden verder invulling aan gegeven en in juni presenteren de jongeren de plannen aan de wethouders. In oktober 2026 moet er een definitief ontwerp worden ingediend en hoogstwaarschijnlijk wordt het bowlingcentrum daarna overkocht. Unlike Zoe's first concert at Siccas, which focused on Persian melodies, this performance is dedicated to Spain. And hugely powerful it is, often cited as the central reason humans became the most dominant species on earth. But the relationship of language to thought is contentious and unknown. Once seen as a transparent medium for ideas, in the 20th century philosophers from Russell and Wittgenstein, to Heidegger and Derrida, overturned this everyday assumption arguing either that language was woven into the way that we think or more strongly that language was the structure of thought. But this view has been challenged by linguists and evolutionary biologists who maintain that thought is not the same as language and that we, and other living beings, have other forms of communication. Should we see language as independent of thought and if so what does thought consist of? Or does language make thoughts possible and provide the framework through which we see the world? Een paar maanden geleden begon Joey Burnet uit Zuidoost met het idee dat hij graag een vrijdagmiddagborrel op de Zuidas wilde meemaken. Op zijn sociale mediakanalen postte hij een oproep, op zoek naar iemand die hem een keer mee zou nemen. Na verschillende borrels bij kantoren kreeg Joey de smaak goed te pakken. Daarom organiseerde hij gisteren zijn eigen Zuidasfeestje, de JoMiBo, ofwel Joey's middagborrel, in een café daar. Met het feest wilde Joey Zuidoost naar de Zuidas brengen. "Ik wil aanmoedigen dat mensen uit een ander milieu ook buiten hun eigen bubbel mensen en culturen leren kennen", zegt Joey. "Er zijn meer werelden, meer mogelijkheden, kijk om je heen en wees nieuwsgierig naar andere dingen. Ik wil een brug slaan tussen Zuidoost en Zuidas-kantoren." Joey heeft diezelfde middag nog zijn 'kantooroutfit' opgehaald en ook zijn vrienden verzocht om een pak of polo aan te trekken. Ook heeft hij dj's en een brassband meegenomen. "Normaal is het een stuk meer tranquilo", zegt een werknemer van de Zuidas die bij de borrel is. "Dan is het lekker rustig: borreltje, biertje, bitterballetje."
