🇪🇪 Patrolling Estonia's border with Russia – one of the most tense frontiers in Europe right now. We spent time with Rasmus, a young Estonian border guard, as he took us on patrol through dense forests, across a frozen lake and into remote border villages along Estonia's eastern frontier with Russia. This is one of NATO's most closely watched borders, and since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, tensions here have only got worse. Every single day, Estonian border guards deal with Russian airspace violations, GPS jamming, drone surveillance and the constant pressure of working just metres from a hostile neighbour. Most of it never makes the news, but for the people stationed out here, it's relentless. We wanted to understand what daily life actually looks like for the people guarding NATO's eastern edge – the routines, the risks, the quiet moments and the very real threats that come with protecting a European border that sits right up against Russia. Estonia is one of the Baltic states – along with Latvia and Lithuania – that have found themselves on the front line of European security since 2022. Morgen begint David uit Bos en Lommer aan zijn eerste veertig kilometer richting Rome. Twee maanden later hoopt hij rennend in de Italiaanse hoofdstad aan te komen. Met de actie wil hij geld ophalen voor het Ronald McDonaldhuis, waar hij zelf twee maanden verbleef toen zijn broertje ernstig ziek was. Om zijn knieën te sparen, heeft David zichzelf een speciale hardlooptechniek aangeleerd. "Ik zet kleine stapjes en ik loop rechtop. Zo vangen je knieën minder klappen op", vertelt hij tijdens een paar rondjes Vondelpark. Hij is er klaar voor. "Dat mag ook wel, want ik train hier al twee jaar voor. Al weet je natuurlijk nooit hoe het voor je lichaam gaat zijn om twee maanden lang ongeveer veertig kilometer per dag te rennen. Dat heb ik natuurlijk niet kunnen trainen. Maar als ik nu veertig kilometer ren, voel ik daar de dag erna niks van. Dat lijkt me een goed teken", lacht hij. Broertje Levi De aanleiding van zijn tocht is persoonlijk. Tijdens de stamceltransplantatie van zijn broertje Levi, waar hij als kind zelf de donor voor was, verbleef hij twee maanden in het Ronald McDonald Huis. Inmiddels is zijn broertje weer kerngezond en wil David graag wat terugdoen voor die tijd. Inmiddels heeft hij al bijna 50.000 euro opgehaald. Zijn vriendin rijdt hem al die kilometers met de camper achterna. Hij is vastbesloten om de eindstreep te halen. "Hoe weet ik nog niet. Kruipend, rennend of lopend. In de kantine van DTA Fortius in de Watergraafsmeer werd getreurd om de uitschakeling, maar minstens zo groot was het feest in diezelfde kantine. Bij de club speelt namelijk een zondagteam met voornamelijk Bolivianen. Met elkaar keken de fans van de twee landen naar de razend belangrijke WK-kwalificatiewedstrijd. Het eerste juichen was nog voor Suriname. Kort na rust kwamen de Surinamers namelijk op voorsprong. In de 72e minuut maakte Bolivia gelijk. Dat werd zeven minuten later zelfs 2-1, na een strafschop. Daar bleef het bij, waarna het grote Boliviaanse feest in de kantine kon beginnen. De Surinaamse fans bleven achter met een mengeling van trots en teleurstelling. Voor een historisch WK-debuut moeten Suriname na namelijk minstens vier jaar geduld hebben.
