Allen finally agrees to talk … and talk and talk, for 35 hours of interviews. M. wants to understand Allen on his own terms, to try and figure out how this scion of bohemian intellectuals ended up hiring someone to kill his ex. It’s hard for M. to believe everything Allen says, but over the course of their conversations, M. comes to feel for their cousin. And they think they understand what drove him to go so far.

M. attends Allen’s trial in San Francisco. The FBI’s star witness, an agent who went by “David," plays his undercover recordings of Allen. They reveal how Allen’s scheme to deport Priscilla turned into a murder-for-hire plot.  Allen is his own star witness, but his attempts to defend himself fall flat in court. M. begins to wonder why they loved seeing Allen humiliated on the stand.

M. seeks out Allen’s ex-wife, Priscilla, who tells her side of the story. It begins with a whirlwind romance but quickly turns to chart Allen’s betrayal: taking her son from Russia and stranding Priscilla and her daughter in Moscow. What follows is Priscilla’s two-year odyssey, a journey that includes surviving a brutal attack and shocking arrests in Zimbabwe, only to reach the U.S. and have Allen take the boy again.    

For decades, M. simply disliked Allen. They saw him as a fool, a pompous “international businessman” who bragged about shady deals and drove fancy cars while living in Eastern Europe and Africa. But one day Allen suddenly shows up at their father’s home in Cape Cod with his mother and 5-year-old son. He says he has separated from his wife, whom he has left behind in Moscow. M. suspects this could be a kidnapping, but their family seems to disagree.  But finally Allen does something so bad, even M.’s family can’t ignore it.

Met de Voorjaarsnota in aantocht vliegen de financiële tegenvallers ons om de oren. Minister Eelco Heinen van Financiën zoekt onder meer dekking voor een eerder door hem zelf gecreëerde tegenvaller op de asielbegroting. Waar hij in het vorige kabinet de financiering van de asielketen nog boekhoudkundig afkneep – Faber zou de instroom tenslotte tot nul reduceren – moet hij nu alsnog de tering naar de nering zetten. Andere tegenvallers vloeien voort uit de dadendrang waarmee eerdere kabinetten de pensioenleeftijd verhoogden van 65 naar 67 jaar. Wat blijkt? Met name 60-plussers doen steeds vaker een beroep op werkloosheidswet WW of raken arbeidsongeschikt. Het UWV laat geen twijfel bestaan over de oorzaak: ze halen hun pensioen niet. De meest opmerkelijke tegenvaller werd per briefpost met de Tweede Kamer gedeeld. De minister van Infrastructuur heeft de komende jaren maar liefst 80 miljard euro nodig om achterstallig onderhoud aan spoorlijnen, wegen en bruggen weg te werken. De tegenvaller zou niet als een verrassing mogen komen voor de Tweede Kamer. De Algemene Rekenkamer waarschuwt al sinds 2016 dat de kabinetten-Rutte het mes veel te draconisch in de rijksbegroting hebben gezet. Ondertussen verschuift het politieke debat naar de hoogte van de benzineprijzen. De partijen op rechts die eerder deze maand nog stonden te applaudisseren bij de Amerikaans-Israëlische aanval op Iran roepen nu om het hardst om maatregelen om de oplopende olieprijzen te compenseren. Het kabinet maakt vooralsnog weinig aanstalten, maar voor hoe lang nog? Vast staat dat zowel onze huidige als onze vorige premier nog niet bereid zijn om Trump te veroordelen voor zijn onverantwoordelijke beleid. Integendeel. Terwijl premier Jetten het koningspaar op staatsbezoek naar de Verenigde Staten stuurt, loopt de secretaris-generaal van de NAVO, Mark Rutte, deze week Amerikaanse studio's plat om luidkeels te verkondigen hoe blij Europa en de wereld zijn met het militaire optreden van Trump in het Midden-Oosten. Hoe door de aanhouding van een 14-jarige de zaak rond explosies bij Pizzabakkers aan het rollen kwam. Een papieren tasje bungelt aan de voordeur van een filiaal van De Pizzabakkers in de Plantage Kerklaan. Het is even na middernacht als de 14-jarige Damian P. op 3 september de tas met drie petflessen benzine, vastgetapet aan een super Cobra 6, achterlaat in de portiek. Hij heeft het pakket eerder die avond gekregen van twee lange jongens op het Waterlooplein en moet een foto maken, zodat het bedreigend over zou komen. Maar wat hij niet weet is dat de politie live meekijkt. Vandaag stond tussenpersoon Darlencho E. voor de rechter.Terwijl sommige bewoners van de Plantage Kerklaan uit angst de nacht ergens anders doorbrengen en de eigenaren van De Pizzabakkers na twee explosies vrezen voor nóg een aanslag op hun panden, wordt de 14-jarige Damian P. op heterdaad aangehouden in de straat. Als agenten meerdere keren een vonk in de buurt van de tas zien, grijpen ze in. De jongen probeert nog weg te rennen, maar wordt aangehouden. Een emotionele Damian P. legt direct verklaringen af bij de politie: "Ik moest hem ophangen en dan een foto maken, zodat het bedreigend over zou komen", aldus de 14-jarige P. in de verhoorkamer van de politie. Hij was eerder via snapchat benaderd en onder druk gezet. "Ik kreeg te horen dat ik een explosief moest plaatsen, anders zouden ze het bij mij doen." Het onderzoek naar P. gaat door en in verhoren bij de politie verklaart hij uitgebreid over hoe hij aan het explosief kwam. De avond voordat P. het explosief af wilde laten gaan had hij de Cobra's, vastgetapet aan flessen benzine in een papieren tas, overhandigd gekregen van twee lange jongens, van ongeveer 17 en 19 jaar oud. Ze hadden afgesproken op het Waterlooplein. Flessen benzine en super cobra 6 Het onderzoek leidt de politie uiteindelijk naar Darlencho E. (19) en Qushendro L. (17). Op de flessen benzine worden vingerafdrukken van E. gevonden. Op de ducttape waarmee het stuk vuurwerk aan de flessen zijn vastgemaakt, wordt dna van Qushendro L. gevonden. Daarnaast blijkt uit gegevens uit de telefoon van de 14-jarige verdachte dat er rond de overdracht contact is geweest met een telefoonnummer dat de recherche toeschrijft aan Darlencho E. De jongen werd uiteindelijk opgepakt met de telefoon op zak, het nummer straalde de avond van de overdracht volgens justitie aan in de omgeving van de Wibautstraat en het Weesperplein. E. zegt dat hij de witte iPhone toevallig bij zich had en dat deze gegevens niets zeggen over zijn betrokkenheid. "Ik had toevallig die telefoon bij me, ik heb drie telefoons en ik leen ze weleens uit." Filialen in Google Maps Uit de gegevens blijkt een gesprek van 16 seconden met Damian P., de avond voor het plaatsen van het explosief. Daarnaast wordt gezien dat 163 keer is gebeld met de opgepakte medeverdachte en dat er 94 berichten met hem zijn uitgewisseld. Verder staan in de telefoon op Google Maps de locaties van De Pizzabakkers gemarkeerd en is een screenshot van een filiaal van de keten gevonden. Darlencho E. heeft naar eigen zeggen geen enkele betrokkenheid bij de zaak, maar wil verder geen uitleg geven. In totaal zijn vier verdachten aangehouden, naast E. (19) gaat het dus om de 14-jarige Damian P., de 25-jarige Querenshyo T. en de 17-jarige Qushendro L. De eerste zitting van laatstgenoemde moet nog plaatsvinden. De rechtbank doet 8 april uitspraak in de zaak van Darlencho E. The tests also featured a scale vehicle launch pad equipped with an exhaust deflector and simulated duct. The background on this footage is this: the first launch of the Space Shuttle (STS-1) utilized what was known as the Sound Suppression Water System. This deluged the flame trench on the launch pad, in order to dampen the acoustics of the rocket engines firing. It was believed this would prevent damage to the Orbiter, External Tank (ET) and Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs) during the first few seconds of lift-off. Data gathered from this first launch however, indicated that the acoustics were much worse than expected. Even with the water deluge, the sound waves literally bounced off the bottom of the flame trench and hit the rear end of the Shuttle stack. The resulting energy could have torn the whole assembly asunder. To address this critical problem before STS-2, NASA performed tests to determine a method of dampening acoustic effects to a safe level during the first few critical seconds of launch. The film shows one of these dampening tests. Engineers came up with the idea of a series of water-filled bladders across the openings to the flame trench. These would absorb the sound waves from the initial ignition of the engines, that would then be further dampened by the water being pumped into the trench itself. The end result was that sound effects to the stack were reduced, so that the stack could withstand for the first seconds and get pad separation. An article summary found online described the tests this way: "The SSV's engine‐generated acoustics and ignition overpressure environments have been long considered as severe dynamic inputs to a reusable aero‐frame structure with a payload located in close proximity to the propulsion systems. The definition of these environments and the noise suppression techniques that are required for SSV launch have been provided from a dynamically scaled hot propulsion model. The scale factor is 6.4% of the Shuttle with the vehicle launch facility with exhaust deflector and duct geometry being simulated. Water injection into the hot exhausts is also scaled for sound suppression for both on‐pad and liftoff cases. The environments measured on model are then scaled to provide launch vehicle environments for vehicle, launch facility, and farfield areas. Overpressure environments from SRB ignition are also acquired from over 100 measurements on the vehicle and launch facility. Suppression techniques are being investigated for Western Test Range (WTR) launchers and for thrust augmented configurations of the Shuttle." Carbonara Serves: 2 Prep time: 5 mins Cook time: 15 mins Ingredients 200g Guanciale 300g spaghetti 200g pecorino cheese 3 egg yolks Sea salt and cracked black pepper, to season Method Place a large pot of water on to boil with 2 pinches of salt in it. Dice the guanciale into 1cm cubes. Place in a cold frying pan, then place over a medium heat. Cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring often, until browned and crisp. Transfer the guanciale to a plate and drain off the fat from the pan into a small bowl. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool completely. Add the pasta to the boiling water and cook until al dente. Grate the pecorino into a large mixing bowl. Season with pepper then add the egg yolks. Ladle in about 125ml (½ cup) of the hot pasta water to the egg mixture and mix quickly to combine and start to melt the cheese. Return ¾ of the guanciale and 1 tablespoon of the reserved fat to the cooled frying pan, off the heat, along with the egg and cheese mixture. Transfer the cooked pasta to the pan with cheese sauce and stir quickly to create an emulsified sauce. If there's not enough heat in the pan to melt the cheese, then place the pan over the boiling pasta water. This will work as a double boiler to slowly heat the cheese up enough to melt it. If you put it back on over a direct heat, you have a high risk of splitting the sauce. Spoon into serving bowls and garnish with the remaining guanciale and some more black pepper. Recipe notes Recipe origins and authenticity: Believed to have originated in Rome, Italy in 1944 during wartime and using a combination of American soldiers’ rations and Italian staples. So from bacon and eggs married with dried pasta and cheese….a simple dish was born which is now popular the world over….but no cream! Cook support: feel free to add some more of the hot pasta water to the eggs and cheese if you feel it needs (If the cheese is not melting). If the sauce is not thickening up when the pasta has been added and mixed through, then place the frying pan over the steaming pasta water saucepan and continue mixing with the heat. Do not place it over direct heat or the sauce could split. Sourcing: Guanciale is an Italian salt-cured pork cheek, available from delicatessens, butchers and quality green grocers. Substitutions: You could use some speck or bacon if you can’t get your hands on the guanciale. Storage: This is best eaten straight away as the sauce is absorbed by the pasta once mixed. If there are leftovers, then they should be refrigerated in an airtight container. Serving ideas: You could opt for a simple light salad to go alongside the pasta or some crusty bread.
