Hij houdt van fietsen, dansen en pianospelen. Het liefst zou hij ook voetballen met zijn klasgenoten, maar die heeft Ryan niet. Hij gaat namelijk al drie jaar niet naar school. En hij is zeker niet het enige Amsterdamse kind: vorig jaar zaten bijna 1200 leerlingen thuis, een recordaantal. Wie zijn deze kinderen, en waarom zitten ze zo lang thuis? Bij binnenkomst is Ryan vriendelijk en een beetje verlegen. Zijn moeder doet het woord. Een half uurtje later is van die verlegenheid niets meer te bekennen: of ik zijn elektrische piano, zijn trompet ("Ik heb al één les gehad!") én natuurlijk zijn kamer wil zien. Hij kan ook wel een stukje spelen. Twee minuten later klinkt de melodie van Spongebob Squarepants uit de speaker van zijn moeders iPhone, terwijl Ryan op de piano meespeelt. Ryan is niet zijn echte naam, maar omdat hij regelmatig vervelende reacties krijgt, vertelt hij zijn verhaal liever anoniem. Doordeweeks krijgt Ryan thuisonderwijs van zijn moeder en één keer per week gaat hij naar huiswerkbegeleiding. Naar school gaat hij al drie jaar niet meer. Voor Ryans moeder is onduidelijk wat er precies is misgegaan en waarom hij niet meer naar school toe mag. Ze vertelt hoe ze destijds, vlak voor de vakantie, een e-mail van de school ontving met de boodschap dat hij niet meer welkom was en ze thuisonderwijs moest gaan geven. "Dat was heftig. Het was zo schokkend dat ik niet wist wat ik moest doen en hoe te handelen, ik kan me dat nog goed herinneren", vertelt ze. "Ik raakte in paniek: wat moet ik doen, wie moet ik bellen, wie moet ik mailen, hoe nu verder?" Ze vertelt dat volgens de school sprake was van gedragsproblemen. Zij verklaren zich vervolgens handelingsverlegen. Daarmee geeft een onderwijsinstelling aan niet in staat te zijn om de leerling de juiste ondersteuning te bieden, en daarmee hield het voor Ryan dus op op deze school. Zelf was hij destijds blij dat hij niet meer terug hoefde: "Ik zal je eerlijk zeggen, het voelde daar alsof ik in een gevangenis was." "Hij is van een heel vrolijk, happy kind veranderd in een onzeker en verdrietig kind", vertelt zijn moeder. "Vooral omdat hij niet kan spelen met andere kinderen en iedereen naar school gaat. Heel wat mensen die in de buurt waren, probeerden vanmiddag een glimp op te vangen van Hollywoodster Brad Pitt, die momenteel een film opneemt in de stad. Wij gingen op onderzoek uit om te zien of ook wij hem konden spotten. Spoiler: dat lukte. Twee vrouwen staan met spanning op de hoek van de Herengracht. Ze kijken door een klein gaatje tussen de hekken, in de hoop de Amerikaanse superster te zien. Tot nu toe hebben ze geen geluk. "Maar we blijven hier tot we hem zien", vertellen ze. "Het is echt een iconische man, echt een seksicoon. En het hele enigma rondom Angelina Jolie is gewoon geweldig", vertelt er eentje. Na uren zoeken is het ons nog niet gelukt om Brad te vinden, maar we vinden wel steeds meer buurtbewoners die hem hebben gezien. "Ja, ik heb hem gezien", vertelt een buurtbewoner. Hij zat in een Zoommeeting, toen hij opeens Brad Pitt zag. "Hij is echt uitzonderlijk knap", vertelt de man glunderend. Gelukkig na een drie uur zoeken, lukt het ons ook om hem te zien. Nadat het rondgaat dat hij nu ook echt te zien is, komen er van alle hoeken veel mensen aanlopen. "Nou, spannend. Ik was aan het werken, dit is het hoogtepunt van mijn dag", vertelt een vrouw die kwam aanrennen om Brad te zien. Niet iedereen is enthousiast over het feit dat de Amerikaanse superster in de buurt aan het filmen is. "Het is maar Brad Pitt, het is niet een heel bijzonder persoon", vertelt de buurtbewoner. Of hij hoopt hem nog te zien? "Maakt mij niet zoveel uit. Ik ga lekker een broodje maken thuis", zegt hij. De opnames zijn voor de film The Riders, waarin Brad Pitt de hoofdrol speelt. TSA officers have not been paid for over a month, leading to hundreds of resignations and leaves of absence. As airports are hit with significant delays, Cameron Cochems, the vice president of a union representing thousands of fellow TSA workers, urges travelers to use their time waiting to call their elected representatives "to fund the TSA so we can get our paychecks and we can get back to work." To fill staffing shortages, DHS has deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to U.S. airports. This comes as ICE is under fire for a hiring surge with minimal vetting and training for new officers. "It really feels like they're a Band-Aid over a gaping wound. Our officers, they're not getting paid, and having people that come in that are getting paid just feels like an insult," says Cochems, who adds that the ultimate goal of the Republican Party is to eliminate union protections and privatize the TSA. Water, water everywhere… and Venice couldn’t drink it. After deliveries of fresh water from the mainland couldn’t meet demand, engineers got to work utilizing the existing squares in the city. The perfect materials had to be chosen, like clay for waterproofing, filling in with sand for permeation, stone for the wells and topping with tile to direct flow. Gutters were also added to the houses. All of this to collect nature’s source of fresh water - rain.

De opnames zijn voor de film The Riders, waarin Brad Pitt de hoofdrol speelt. Het verhaal is gebaseerd op een boek van Tim Winton uit 1994 dat zich (deels) in Amsterdam afspeelt. De film gaat over een man die in Ierland op zijn vrouw wacht. Als zij niet aankomt, begint hij aan een zoektocht door Europa.
