The blackout ground the city to a halt, trapping residents in their apartments, forcing the closure of many businesses and leading to fuel shortages at gas stations. Officials in Indiana estimate the storm might have caused up to $5 billion in damage in Gary and other communities. "We're still in the recovery phase, as we speak," says Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, who underscores that "hardening the infrastructure" should be a priority for the NIPSCO utility company. "We've never seen wind this strong before. … They need to ensure that the utility grid system is going to sustain that type of wind." More than 4,200 people are missing in Nepal and hundreds more in Tibet. Families are searching hospitals for loved ones, and crews have buried hundreds of unidentified bodies in shallow graves. Rescue efforts are also underway for more than 900 hydropower workers, believed to be trapped in more than a dozen underground tunnels blocked by debris. The cause of the flash flooding is believed to have been the collapse of a glacier in the mountains, leading a wave of water, rocks and debris to carve its way through the valley. Drones, explosies en zwaargewonde militairen die vanaf het front worden binnengebracht. De 26-jarige student Geneeskunde Frederiek Roukens is net terug van het slagveld in Oekraïne. Ze werkte daar een week lang op de intensivecareafdeling van een militair ziekenhuis in Charkiv, een frontstad niet ver van de Russische grens. "Ik zag verwondingen die ik in Nederland nooit eerder had gezien. Het klinkt misschien hard, maar soms vroeg ik me echt af of het nog wel om een lichaam ging. Geen benen of armen meer, de gezichten vaak vreselijk gewond." Elke dag zag Frederiek de lichamen binnenkomen op de intensive care van het militaire ziekenhuis in Charkiv. Gewonde soldaten, vaak ingepakt met verband. "De meeste evacuaties gebeuren 's nachts, omdat de drones dan minder goed kunnen zien. Je moet op een gegeven moment wel een soort knop omzetten. One pot sausage and rice Ingredients - 1 onion - 1 carrot - 1 stick celery - 2 cloves garlic - 2 chorizo sausages - 2 tbsp olive oil - ½ tsp smoked paprika - Salt and pepper to taste - 120g (4.2 oz) Arborio rice - 500ml (17 ½ oz) chicken stock - 60g (2.1 oz) baby spinach Method Step 1 1. Peel and finely dice the onion and carrot, finely dice the celery then set aside. 2. Crush and roughly chop the garlic, then set aside. 3. Slice the chorizo into chunks, (3-4cm thick) then set aside. Step 2 1. Add olive oil to a medium sized saucier. Preheat the saucier on high heat for 30 seconds. 2. Add the onion, carrot and celery, sweat for 2-3 minutes with ½ tsp of salt. Once the onions turn translucent, add the garlic and stir. 3. Add the sliced chorizo and stir into the vegetables. Cook for two minutes or until the fat begins to render out of the chorizo. 4. Add the smoked paprika, ¼ tsp of salt, 12 cracks of black pepper and the rice (no need to rinse the rice). Keep the saucier on the heat to lightly toast the rice for 1 minute. 5. Add the chicken stock and stir, making sure to lift any pieces of rice stuck to the bottom of the saucier. Bring the stock to a simmer then turn the element down to low, place a lid on top and leave for 15 minutes. Step 3 1. Remove the lid and check the rice is soft. If the rice is still firm, place the lid back on and leave on low heat for a further 5 minutes. 2. Remove the lid, turn the heat up high and add the spinach. Place the lid back on for 60 seconds. Remove the lid, stir the rice and cook for a further 60 seconds. 3. Taste the rice and adjust seasoning if required. Plate and enjoy.

Drones, explosies en zwaargewonde militairen die vanaf het front worden binnengebracht. De 26-jarige student Geneeskunde Frederiek Roukens is net terug van het slagveld in Oekraïne. Ze werkte daar een week lang op de intensivecareafdeling van een militair ziekenhuis in Charkiv, een frontstad niet ver van de Russische grens. "Ik zag verwondingen die ik in Nederland nooit eerder had gezien. Het klinkt misschien hard, maar soms vroeg ik me echt af of het nog wel om een lichaam ging. Geen benen of armen meer, de gezichten vaak vreselijk gewond." Elke dag zag Frederiek de lichamen binnenkomen op de intensive care van het militaire ziekenhuis in Charkiv. Gewonde soldaten, vaak ingepakt met verband. "De meeste evacuaties gebeuren 's nachts, omdat de drones dan minder goed kunnen zien. Je moet op een gegeven moment wel een soort knop omzetten. Ik had van tevoren al tegen mezelf gezegd dat het heel heftig zou worden, dat ik dit soort dingen te zien zou krijgen en dat ik weinig zou slapen." De 26-jarige arts in opleiding was al twee keer eerder in Oekraïne geweest. Om met stichting Protect Ukraine medische hulpmiddelen, auto's en ambulances te brengen. De eerste keer was anderhalf jaar geleden. "Ik kijk vaak naar het nieuws en dan voelde ik me altijd machteloos en verdrietig. Al die lelijke dingen die er in de wereld gebeuren op dit moment. Toen kwam er een oproep voorbij binnen Geneeskunde dat ze op zoek waren naar artsen voor een konvooi naar Oekraïne. Voor mij was dat een manier om iets concreets te doen en te helpen." Met het medisch konvooi bezocht Frederiek ook het militaire ziekenhuis in Charkiv. "Toen hoorde ik van de artsen dat er naast de spullen ook extra handen nodig waren." Na lang nadenken besloot Frederiek die extra handen aan te bieden. In haar vakantie reisde ze af naar Oekraïne. Ik weet nog dat ik de eerste avond in bed lag en de sirenes van de ambulances hoorde. Het luchtalarm was al vaak afgegaan en ik hoorde explosies. Toen dacht ik: 'Oké, ik ben nu in het gevaar waar ik de afgelopen tijd zo over heb nagedacht'. Maar ik vroeg me ook af of ik echt wat kon betekenen hier, of het het allemaal waard was. Toen kreeg ik een appje van de arts die me had ontvangen: 'Bedankt voor het komen, Je bent als een zonnestraal in een heel donker koninkrijk'. En ik weet nog dat al die twijfel toen meteen wegzakte." Tijdens de week op de intensivecare-afdeling in Charkiv heeft Frederiek een hoop geleerd en gezien. "Ik heb ook zeker momenten gehad dat ik bij een patiënt de tranen voelde opkomen. Maar het lukte me wel altijd om rustig te blijven. Dat moet ook denk ik om dit werk te kunnen doen. Op de momenten dat ik alleen was, kon ik gewoon even heel hard huilen soms, en dat was dan ook heel lekker." Inmiddels is Frederiek al een kleine maand terug in Amsterdam. Ze start binnenkort met haar coschappen op de Spoedeisende Hulp. "Ik moest de eerste twee weken echt weer landen hier. En bijslapen. Ik moest even wennen aan het idee dat ik weer gewoon in de stad ben waar alles normaal is, waar er geen luchtalarm is. Geen constante sirenes om je heen of gewonden die binnen worden gebracht. Het is ook wel weer heel fijn om te voelen dat je veilig bent." Frederiek heeft er nog wel over nagedacht om haar coschappen in Oekraïne te doen. "Maar omdat Oekraïne een rood gebied is, kan je daar geen coschappen lopen. Het is natuurlijk gevaarlijk en risicovol, en ik kan me voorstellen dat de UvA toch de verantwoordelijkheid draagt voor een student die daarheen gaat. De keren dat ik daarheen ben gegaan stonden los van de universiteit. De politie doet onderzoek naar de TikTok-livestream waarop te zien was hoe een ruzie achter Centraal Station gisteravond uitliep op een steekpartij. Bij die steekpartij raakten vier mannen gewond, onder wie de 43-jarige verdachte uit Naarden. Hij is aangehouden en ligt nog in het ziekenhuis, meldt de politie vanochtend. TikTokker 'Superhuman Unchained' streamde rond 19.30 uur hoe hij aan het schaduwboksen was op de De Ruijterkade onder de overkapping van het station. Tijdens die stream kreeg hij ruzie met een groep mannen. Op de beelden zegt hij vervolgens dat hij niet bang is voor 6 of 7 mannen. Ook roept hij onder meer "alcohol doet dit", "niet aanraken" en "ze gaan allemaal vallen". Vervolgens haalt hij uit naar een man, waarbij hij mogelijk steekt. Wat er daarna gebeurt, is niet duidelijk. Van de vier gewonden, werden er drie naar het ziekenhuis vervoerd, onder wie de verdachte. Deze man uit Naarden ligt nog in het ziekenhuis en is aangehouden, meldt de politie. De twee anderen konden na behandeling het ziekenhuis verlaten. De vierde gewonde kon ter plekke worden behandeld.
