De Joodse school Cheider, die in de nacht van vrijdag op zaterdag doelwit is geworden van een gerichte explosie, is vandaag weer open voor onderwijs. Gisteren was de school dicht vanwege sjabbat, een rustdag voor Joden. Volgens een docent van de school zijn sommige leerlingen bezorgd, maar heerst er geen angstige sfeer. Een tweetal plaatste in de nacht van vrijdag op zaterdag een explosief bij de buitenmuur van de school in Buitenveldert. Niemand raakte gewond en de schade bleef beperkt. "Ik voel me niet minder veilig", vertelt Doedie van Dijk, die lesgeeft op Cheider. "Het is rustig hier, kalm." Van Dijk merkt wel op dat sommige leerlingen wat angstiger of bezorgd zijn. ''Maar het is verdeeld." Over de aanslag van dit weekend heeft de docent het niet veel met zijn leerlingen. "We gaan gewoon door met leren, op een leuke manier, op een positieve manier. Dat is het sterkste wapen dat we hebben," zegt hij. "De beleving van de Joden, de trots: niemand kan ons dat afnemen." Een buurtbewoner komt deze zondag een bloemetje leggen bij de school. "Het wordt steeds erger hoe de Joodse gemeenschap in Nederland benaderd wordt.", zegt hij. In Rotterdam werden in verband met de brandstichting vier verdachten opgepakt, maar voor de aanval in Amsterdam zijn nog geen aanhoudingen verricht. Op sociale media circuleren beelden die suggereren dat één organisatie verantwoordelijk is voor de aanslagen. Het gaat om de zogenoemde Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyyah. De politie wil daar vandaag verder niks over kwijt. Verschillende media speculeren over een link tussen de oorlog in Iran en de aanslagen. Enkele experts die zij aanhalen zien verbanden tussen de groepering en aan Iran gelieerde organisaties, zoals Hezbollah in Libanon en de Houthi's in Jemen. Bij verschillende Joodse instellingen in de stad zoals de Portugese Synagoge op het Mr. Visserplein en het Joods Museum aan de Nieuwe Amstelstraat is de politie dit weekend extra zichtbaar. Burgemeester Halsema noemde de aanslag 'een laffe daad.' Dit weekend zei zij: "We nemen nu extra maatregelen en zijn aan het kijken wat er verder moet gebeuren." De aanslag op de school kwam hard aan bij de Joodse gemeenschap in Amsterdam. Naar de sportschool gaan heeft een enorme vlucht genomen. Althans, als je dit mag koppelen aan het aantal sportscholen die hier zijn geopend. In nog geen vijf jaar is het aantal sportscholen in de stad met een kwart gestegen. Dat blijkt uit cijfers van de Kamer van Koophandel. Dat het postkantoor op de Westerstraat verhuist, omdat ze de huur van 10.000 euro niet kunnen ophoesten, wisten de meeste buurtbewoners al. En wat ervoor in de plaats komt, in dat grote pand op nummer 61, blijkt voor de meesten eigenlijk ook geen verrassing. "Toch niet een sportschool, hè?", antwoordt Mireille, een buurtbewoner, op de vraag naar haar vermoeden. "Nee, daar zijn er al zoveel van!" Ze is niet de enige die teleurgesteld reageert. "Het is fijn om in de buurt ook echt een buurt te houden. Waarin je boodschappen kan doen, naar het postkantoor kan gaan", zegt een hardloopster. "En gewoon een beetje een gemoedelijke sfeer kan houden. En dat verdwijnt steeds meer." Toch zullen er ook veel mensen blij mee zijn, want er is een enorme markt voor sportscholen in de stad. Dat blijkt ook uit de cijfers. In 2022 waren het er nog 1338, begin dit jaar zijn er 1659 locaties waar je in Amsterdam kunt sporten. Een stijging van bijna 25 procent. In de Jordaan is bijvoorbeeld goed zichtbaar hoe snel dat gaat. Rond de Westerstraat zitten al twee personal trainers, een sportschool en een yogastudio. Om de hoek is een pilatesstudio, net als op de Lindengracht. "Ik denk dat dit heel goed past in de tijd", zegt gedrags- en bewegingswetenschapper Florentina Hettinga van de Vrije Universiteit. "In een druk leven met werk, kinderen, gezin, moet het sporten ook wel toegankelijk zijn." Daarom kiezen steeds meer mensen voor sporten in de sportschool, zegt Hettinga. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat jonge mensen vaak beginnen met een teamsport, maar als ze ouder worden de voorkeur geven aan de flexibiliteit van de sportschool. Op het Koningin Wilhelminaplein in Nieuw-West, waar onlangs ook een nieuwe sportschool opende, is een buurtbewoner blij met de komst van de nieuwe gym. "Ik ga zes keer per week. Squier made these pioneering images while gathering legends for her book "The Bride of the Sacred Well." The film begins with images of Teotihuacan, including the Pyramid of the Sun and other Aztec ruins. At 5:22 is a look at the famous water gardens of Xochimilco, followed at 7:39 footage shot at Chichen-Itza. At 8:26 are shots of El Caracol, where Mayan priests observed the stars. At 9:53, ruins are shown still covered by jungle foliage. At 11:11 the Temple of a Thousand Columns is shown, and at 13:08 the chacmool figure. At 13:54, the mound and deep shaft thought to be the grave of a high priest of Kukul Kan. At 14:29, the huge Sacred Well and the Pyramid of Kukul Kan. Squier was an American author, journalist, and screenwriter known for her nature and travel writing, particularly her work on Mexican and Native American folklore. Squier achieved national recognition with her book "The Wild Heart" (1922), a collection of stories about wildlife. She also authored other notable works, including "The Bride of the Sacred Well," a book of legends from ancient Mexico, and "Gringa: An American Woman in Mexico," which recounted her adventures in the country. De meeste deelnemers van het Kieskompas zitten niet te wachten op een coffeeshopverbod voor toeristen. Voor het erotisch centrum is zelfs heel weinig belangstelling en over het terugdringen van het aantal toeristen is het beeld verdeeld. Inmiddels is het Kieskompas al zo'n twintigduizend keer ingevuld en de helft van de deelnemers vulde er ook gegevens over zichzelf bij in. "Van daaruit kunnen we de data wegen, representatief maken en kijken hoe de Amsterdammers denken over de dertig belangrijkste thema's in Amsterdam", legt Jeroen van Lindert, onderzoeker bij het Kieskompas, uit. Een van de stellingen is dat de gemeente meer moet doen om het aantal toeristen te verminderen, ook als dat banen kost. Van Lindert: "Ongeveer de helft die zegt, toerisme mag worden teruggedrongen, en ook ongeveer de helft vindt dat absoluut niet. Het is wel zo dat als je hier in de regio kijkt, in het Wallengebied, daar is meer draagvlak om het toerisme terug te dringen." Daar gaat het om zeven van de tien deelnemers. De komst van een erotisch centrum, waar inmiddels alleen nog GroenLinks volledig voor is, ziet maar een op de zes deelnemers zitten. "Ik ben heel erg tegen. Het hoort bij de stad, de Wallen", vertelt iemand die het Kieskompas zelf ook invulde. Voor het coffeeshopverbod voor toeristen komt door een draai van de PvdA mogelijk wel iets meer steun in de gemeenteraad, maar opvallend is dat maar een kwart van de deelnemers dat wil. "Dus daar heeft de politiek wat uit te leggen", zegt Van Lindert. "Over waarom ze dat willen doen. En dan kan ook een opinie van een kiezer natuurlijk veranderen. Dus ik zou daar zeker zeggen, lees wat partijen over de stelling hebben geschreven." Die uitleg van de partijen is terug te vinden in het Kieskompas en is de komende dagen nog steeds in te vullen. Ook Kieskompas denkt dat of PvdA, of GroenLinks of D66 het grootst wordt In februari werd een peiling van Bureau O&S gepresenteerd. Daarin stond dat de PvdA, GroenLinks of D66 de grootste kans maken om het grootst te worden en dat ze waarschijnlijk een vergelijkbaar aantal zetels als tijdens de vorige gemeenteraadsverkiezingen uitkomen. Dit komt volgens Van Lindert ook uit de resultaten van het Kieskompas. "Amsterdam is een progressieve stad. Zowel PvdA, GroenLinks als D66 zijn progressieve partijen. In dat hokje, daar gaan mensen ook wel tussen kiezen. Daar zie je ook wel dat mensen tussen twijfelen, op welke van die drie partijen ga ik kiezen? Bij de buitenmuur van Joodse school Cheider in Buitenveldert heeft vannacht een explosie plaatsgevonden. De politie en brandweer waren snel ter plaatse waardoor de schade beperkt is gebleven. Dat meldt de Amsterdamse driehoek (burgemeester, politie, justitie) vanochtend. De politie laat vanmiddag weten dat het om twee verdachten ging. Zij kwamen aan op een motorscooter. "Een persoon stapt van de motorscooter en plaatst een voorwerp tegen de buitenmuur van de school", schrijft de politie. "Daarna rent deze persoon terug naar de motorscooter. Op het moment dat de verdachten wegrijden gaat een explosief af op de plek waar kort daarvoor een voorwerp is geplaatst." De twee zijn vanaf de Zeelandstraat richting de Van Nijenrodeweg gevlucht. De politie is een onderzoek gestart en heeft ook sporen verzameld. Er zijn camerabeelden van degene die het explosief heeft laten afgaan, meldt de driehoek. "De Amsterdamse driehoek beschouwt dit als een gerichte aanslag tegen de Joodse gemeenschap en neemt dit zeer hoog op. We werken nauw samen met de landelijke veiligheidsdiensten en staan in contact met de Joodse gemeenschap. In overleg met veiligheidsdiensten worden extra maatregelen getroffen." Burgemeester Halsema: "Dit is een laffe daad van agressie richting de Joodse gemeenschap. Ik snap de angst en woede van Joodse Amsterdammers. Zij krijgen steeds vaker te maken met antisemitisme en dat is onacceptabel. Een school moet een plek zijn waar kinderen veilig les kunnen krijgen. Amsterdam moet een plek zijn waar Joden veilig kunnen leven." De Joodse scholen en instellingen in de stad worden permanent beveiligd. Naar aanleiding van de incidenten in Luik en Rotterdam, waarbij explosies afgingen bij een synagoge eerder deze week, was de beveiliging in nauw overleg met de landelijke veiligheidsdiensten opgeschroefd. Er was naast specifieke maatregelen ook sprake van permanent en verscherpt toezicht. "Daardoor heeft politie direct kunnen handelen en zijn er beelden van het plaatsen en ontsteken van het explosief." Hans Weijel, vicevoorzitter van het Centraal Joods Overleg, noemt de explosie rampzalig. "Rampzalig dat blijkbaar Joodse scholen ook de dupe moeten worden." Hij benadrukt dat Joodse scholen al jaren zwaar bewaakt worden. The contraceptive they’ve been given wasn’t initially developed for this purpose. It was actually meant as a treatment against parasites, which cause bowel inflammation in birds. But as a side effect, this medication also works as a contraceptive. But: It remains to be seen whether the ingestion could harm the animals. In het programma Waldy Hoort Stemmen peilt presentator Waldy van Geenen in verschillende buurten wat de mensen gaan stemmen bij de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen. Deze keer is dat de Apollobuurt in Zuid. Bijna de hele Apollobuurt wist tijdens de landelijke verkiezingen vorig jaar de weg naar de stembus te vinden. Ondanks dat de VVD hier soeverein is met 40% van de stemmen, schijnt er toch een kleine groep idealistische sociaaldemocraten in de buurt te wonen. Al twee verkiezingen op rij haalde de PvdA hier rond de 8 procent van de stemmen. Het antwoord op de vraag wie dit jaar de grootste wordt in de Apollobuurt is niet zo snel gegeven. Want D66 zat hier vorig jaar op bijna een kwart van de stemmen, en hoe goed doet de VVD het hier nadat zij in de afgelopen coalitie beslissingen heeft moeten maken die eigenlijk tegen hun natuur ingingen, zoals rond de erfpacht? 'Vorig jaar stemde ik, landelijk, op D66. Maar normaal zit ik wat verder naar links.' Hoewel erfpacht ook voor deze buurtbewoner een belangrijk thema is ('ik heb niks afgekocht, het is te wazig') zal hij ook dit jaar weer links stem. 'Voor mijn idealen moet de portemonnee maar even wijken.' Stem kwijt Op het tweede adres spreken we ondernemer Martin (69). 'Ik weet nog niet wat ik ga stemmen', verklaart hij. 'Het maakt ook niet zoveel uit, want er komt toch geen donder van terecht.' Martin heeft slechte ervaringen in het contact met de gemeente. 'Ze zijn onbereikbaar en regelen het niet. In het verleden stemde ik VVD, maar daar ben ik ook niet zeker meer van.
