Dawley's marionette puppetry. A humorous puppet character introduces the subject before the presentation demonstrates how individual strings and handheld controllers allow operators to make marionettes raise their arms, bow, turn their heads, and kneel. The film then shows a larger chorus of puppets controlled through a multiple controller worn by the operator, and invented by Dawley. Aan de Professor R. Casimirstraat in Osdorp zijn binnen één etmaal twee explosieven afgegaan bij dezelfde woning. Ook was er een poging tot een explosie. Voor die poging, in de nacht van vrijdag op zaterdag, is een 16-jarige jongen uit Amsterdam aangehouden. De politie onderzoekt een mogelijk verband met de andere incidenten. De woning was in de nacht van vrijdag op zaterdag voor het eerst doelwit. Kort na middernacht probeerde iemand daar een explosief te laten afgaan. Ter plekke werd de 16-jarige verdachte aangehouden. Hij wordt morgen voorgeleid. Met de aanhouding was de rust rond de woning echter niet teruggekeerd. Binnen 24 uur na de poging tot een explosie was er gisteren om 19.40 uur dan daadwerkelijk een ontploffing bij het pand. En een paar uur daarna, net nadat de hulpdiensten waren vertrokken, volgde rond 23.20 uur opnieuw een explosie. De voordeur van de woning liep brandschade op. Ook is een ruit van de woning gebarsten. Niemand raakte gewond. De politie heeft een onderzoek ingesteld naar de toedracht van de explosies. Daarvoor zijn onder meer sporen veiliggesteld. These are currently being handed out at kebab shops here in Germany: packaging printed with Bundeswehr advertising. How did they come up with this idea, and is it actually effective? A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence told me that the goal of the campaign is to reach people where they already are, not just young people but also, for example, career changers. But the idea isn't exactly new. Over the past few years, Bundeswehr ads have also appeared on pizza boxes, bakery bags, and popcorn buckets. The campaign is generating mixed reactions online. Some people think it's a creative idea, while others feel it goes too far. But it's not just Germany that's getting more creative with military recruitment. In France, for example, there have been public obstacle-course events designed to attract new recruits and give people a chance to see how they might perform in a military environment. It's no surprise that recruitment campaigns are becoming increasingly creative. Most European countries, including Germany and France, currently do not havecompulsory military service, although their recruitment systems differ in some respects. The Ministry of Defence spokesperson couldn't tell me whether the kebab-box campaign is actually effective, saying that its direct impact is difficult to measure. Donkerbruin interieur, een afgebladderd plafond en affiches van biermerken aan de muur. De tijd in café De Oranjerie in de Haarlemmerbuurt lijkt hier al dertig jaar te hebben stilgestaan. De kroeg werd in 1926 opgericht als café Passage en werd gerund door Tante Stien. Nu precies 100 jaar later zijn het Rein Langereis en zijn zoon Yannick Langereis die achter de toog staan. "Het was voor ons het belangrijkste dat het gewoon hetzelfde zou blijven". Aan de gevel hangen twee bankjes die precies de laatste zon van de dag vangen en binnen is een ruimte waarvan minstens de helft wordt ingenomen door de enorme bar met krukken, diverse soorten taps voor de biertjes en een afgebladderd plafond van de jaren dat er nog gerookt mocht worden. Aan alle aspecten van dit café is te zien dat er hier geleefd wordt en dat ook al voor heel wat jaren. De Oranjerie vierde afgelopen weekend groots hun 100-jarig bestaan. Feestweekend Volgens mede-eigenaar Yannick Langereis had iedereen de kans om het feest te vieren, want er waren genoeg verschillende festiviteiten tijdens het weekend. Onder meer een avond met een dj, een jazz-bandje en een buurtlunch met aansluitend een open mic-avond zorgde voor een sfeervolle viering van deze mijlpaal. Wat Langereis betreft blijft het verder bij die vier dagen feest. "Het was een groot succes en nu is het weer normaal, zoals het hoort te zijn." Want dat is volgens hem en zijn vader de kracht van deze plek, dat mensen het herkennen van alle jaren dat ze hier al komen. De uitspraak 'Never change a winning team' blijkt hier daadwerkelijk ook het gewenste resultaat te geven. "Mensen komen toch graag terug, omdat ze weten wat ze krijgen." Een hapje voor erbij Tijdens het weekend is er een beeld onthuld van koningin Wilhelmina. Als waakvrouwe staat zij nu boven de ingang van het café. Een nieuw verhaal wat weer verteld kan worden door het spraakzame personeel. Op de vraag of dat een vereiste is om een goede barman of barvrouw te zijn, wordt lachend gereageerd door de aanwezige vaste gasten en werknemer Leo Carillho. Sinds 1994 is hij werkzaam bij De Oranjerie als barman. Of eigenlijk nog zoveel meer. Hij bedacht in overleg met Langereis dat de kaart moest worden uitgebreid en zette de eerste stappen in het kleine keukentje wat aanwezig is. "Toen ben ik begonnen met pasta zalm met pesto en sardientjes met spek en dat hebben we op het raam gezet en mensen kwamen daarvoor binnen." Redelijk verbaasd dat dit ze aan meer klandizie hielp, gingen ze door met deze gerechten. Al kwam al na een vrij korte periode de vraag of Carillho niet nog andere gerechten wist. Zo breidde de kaart langzaam uit tot een inmiddels volgekalkt krijtbord wat de hele linkermuur beslaat met allerlei soorten drank en eten. 'Het huiskamergevoel' Ook vaste gast Marnix is sinds '94 onderdeel van deze caféfamilie. Door de vaste dagen waarop hij zijn borrel komt nuttigen, weten ze inmiddels wanneer ze het glas voor hem moeten klaarzetten. Daarnaast is het niet zomaar een glas, maar heeft hij een eigen gepersonaliseerd glas met zijn naam erop. Ook is er op zijn vaste zitplek aan de bar een plaatje met zijn naam in de bar geschroefd. Dat is volgens hem hoe ze hier met je omgaan. Langereis vindt het ook belangrijk dat de buurt zich thuis voelt. "Het is natuurlijk best een oude buurt van Amsterdam, dus er komen hier veel paradijsvogels, maar ook de meest bekakte mensen. En dan is het leuke juist dat die hiernaast elkaar aan tafel kunnen zitten en dan voelen ze zich hartstikke welkom." Doordat iedere vaste gast ook weer openstaat voor het leren kennen van nieuwe mensen, zorgt dat voor een hele open sfeer volgens Langereis. Tallow-Poached Rib Eye Steak A low-temperature technique for cooking a thick steak by gently poaching it in beef tallow with aromatics, then finishing with a hard sear. Ingredients - 1 large thick rib eye steak (about 1.5kg) - 3 l beef tallow - 1 head of garlic, halved - 1 sprig rosemary - 1 red chili - 12 peppercorns - 2 tsp salt, for dry brining Steps 1. Pat the steak dry with paper towel and tie it with butcher’s twine — this helps it hold its shape while it slowly poaches. Season generously with salt, on all sides. 2. Place the steak uncovered on a rack set over a tray. Refrigerate overnight, uncovered. This step matters: if the steak isn’t properly dried out, the salt will just wash off as soon as it goes into the tallow. 3. Preheat the beef tallow in a pot to around 80°C (176°F). Add the garlic halved, peppercorns, chili, and rosemary. 4. Take the steak straight from the fridge. Pat it dry again, then insert a probe thermometer into the center of the meat if you have one. (If you don’t have a wireless probe, you’re going to need to use a Thermo pen to check the temperature of the sake starting at about 45 minutes to an hour) 5. Carefully lower the steak into the hot tallow. Place the whole pot in an oven set to 80°C (176°F) and poach until the internal temperature reaches 42–43°C (108–109°F) for medium-rare. 6. Very carefully remove the steak from the tallow and sear it on all sides in a really hot pan until deeply browned. 7. Slice and serve. Notes Poaching time will vary a lot depending on the thickness of your steak and how accurate your oven is — use a probe thermometer if you have one and go by temperature, not time. The overnight dry brine is what lets the seasoning actually stay on the meat once it hits the hot tallow. #spiderman #marvel #rap
Woonbootbewoners Borneokade na jarenlange strijd rond zwemsteige

Al jarenlang zorgt de populaire zwemsteiger aan de Borneokade voor problemen. Veel buurtbewoners genieten van de steiger, maar een woonboot naast de steiger ervaart al jarenlang overlast van de steiger. Volgens hen is de zwemplek uitgegroeid tot een illegaal openluchtzwembad, en eisen ze dat de gemeente handhaaft. Dat zorgt al jaren voor tweespalt in de buurt: aan de ene kant zwemmende buurtbewoners, tegenover rustzoekende woonbootbewoners. En het lukt de gemeente, maar niet om het op te lossen. Voor sommige Amsterdammers is de zwemsteiger op de Borneokade, wellicht gewoon een fijne zwemplek, maar voor buurtbewoners is het een plek die veel emoties doet opleven. De laatste jaren trekt de steiger ook mensen uit omringende delen van de stad. En is het ook steeds drukker geworden op de zwemsteiger. En daar wringt het voor Jantien de Laaf en Wieger van Aalderen, dat in een woonboot naast de steiger woont en daar een B&B runt. Zij proberen al jarenlang de overlast te verminderen. Vanaf 2011 dienen al de eerste procedures over de overlast door de steiger. Er volgen vele rechtszaken en procedures. Alles geprobeerd Jantien en Wieger, benadrukken dat ze voor dat ze de rechtszaken begonnen er alles aan hebben gedaan om het op andere manieren op te lossen. Maar toen dat keer op keer, niet lukte, zijn ze begonnen met de rechtszaken tegen de gemeente. Wat volgt zijn vele rechtszaken, die veelal in het voordeel worden beslist van Wieger en Jantien. "We hebben ongeveer zeven a acht zaken gehad. Maar ik weet het niet zeker, maar in ieder geval heel veel", vertelt Jantien. We spreken het echtpaar over de jarenlange strijd die ze voerden tegen de gemeente. Spannend Nooit eerder hebben ze hun verhaal op camera gedaan, en dat vinden ze best spannend. "Ik voel de mening van de buurt, dat het gaat om twee mensen die het voor iedereen verpesten. En daarom vind ik het spannend", vertelt Wieger. "Ik verpest het voor niemand. Wij willen gewoon normaal kunnen leven hier als het heet is", vervolgt Wieger. "Als er gezwommen wordt, wil ik daar niet de dupe van worden", sluit hij af. Een veelgehoorde mening in de buurt is: dat het maar een paar dagen per jaar echt warm is, dus dan ook echt druk is. Jantien en Wieger, zijn het hiermee niet eens, zij zeggen dat het veel meer dagen heel warm is. "Maar het gaat ook niet per se over overvolle steigers. Het is al genoeg als er een paar gillende mensen op de steiger zitten", vertelt Wieger. In 2019 berichten wij voor het eerst over de steiger, want mede door een kort geding van de woonbootbewoners, kwam er een zwemverbod tot stand. Later werd dat zwemverbod weer ingetrokken door de gemeente. Het is een van de vele dingen die zijn geprobeerd om de overlast tegen te gaan. Zo is de steiger ook meerdere keren door de jaren heen verkort. Toch bleef de overlast aanhouden voor Jantien en Wieger. We spreken Zeeger Ernsting dagelijks bestuurder voor stadsdeel Oost, over dit dossier. Hoe kijkt hij terug op de jarenlange strijd die is gevoerd in de rechtszaal, en vindt hij dat er fouten zijn gemaakt door de gemeente. "Ik weet niet of er fouten zijn gemaakt. De gemeente heeft altijd geprobeerd om de balans te vinden tussen de belangen van de ene kant en de belangen van de andere kant. Wij dachten dat we dat altijd op een goede manier deden, maar het staat mensen in een rechtstaat altijd vrij om een onafhankelijke rechter er een oordeel over te vellen", aldus Ernsting. In meerdere items die wij maakten over de kwestie wordt een ding duidelijk: veel buurtbewoners hechten heel veel waarde aan de steiger. Het maakt dan ook veel emoties los in de buurt. Ruud, is een van deze buurtbewoners. We spreken hem op de steiger. ""Het is een van de weinige stukjes waar ontspanning mogelijk is voor de buurt", vertelt hij. "En de verontwaardiging is best wel groot dat, een iemand het kan verpesten voor de rest", zegt Ruud over de vele rechtszaken die de woonbootbewoners zijn gestart tegen de overlast. Javakade Mogelijk, komt er een einde aan de jarenlange strijd. Want Jantien en Wieger hebben een nieuwe ligplek voor hun woonboot gekregen op de Javakade. Ze gingen akkoord. Ze hebben echter wel een paar voorwaarden, onder meer dat een binnenvaartschip dat een rustplaats zoekt op redelijke afstand – 25 meter – van hun boot aanmeert. Maar na een inloopavond is er in de nieuwe buurt direct onrust over de komst van de woonbootbewoners. En dus keert de rust misschien terug bij de Borneo-steiger, waar het allemaal begon. En inderdaad: haar verhaal klinkt als een slechte complottheorie, maar dat is het niet. Het is een ongemakkelijke waarheid waarin de hoofdrolspelers vaak beschikken over miljarden dollars, macht en toegang tot de technologie van morgen. Dat de machtigste en rijkste mensen op aarde deze ideologie aanhangen, helpt niet echt mee. Zeker niet wanneer ze niet langer proberen rampen te voorkomen, maar zich enkel nog bezighouden met de vraag wie ze mag overleven... Gelukkig is er nog, enigszins, hoop. In beide steden worden al geen boetes meer uitgedeeld. Maar sinds Utrecht een half jaar geleden is gestopt met het beboeten van buitenslapen, is het aantal meldingen van overlast door buitenslapers verdubbeld ten opzichte van dezelfde periode vorig jaar.

I do not give medical advice over the internet. Recalls and outbreaks are different situations but can overlap. Most (not all) recalls happening now are from the company who makes the product, and often (but not always) done before anyone gets sick. Sometimes it's a genuine mistake in the company. Other times it's some mix of bad leadership and management, poor competence, and no regard for social responsibility. Outbreaks are "later" in time, meaning the contaminated products have already been out for a while, people have interacted with and consumed them, and people have gotten sick from food poisoning and the like, and now the local and federal agencies have to investigate. Recall situations are easier to control. Outbreaks, like the cyclospora one, are much more unpredictable and harder to control. In this environment, you can control what you pay attention to, and it is best to see the current recalls and alerts from FDA and CDC. The fact that we're still hearing about them means the system isn't completely turned to mush right now, despite the ongoing narratives. But you still have to do what you need to, to protect yourself. Omwonenden van de Klaprozenweg zijn gefrustreerd nadat er gisteravond wéér een ernstig ongeluk gebeurde op de drukke weg in Noord. Een 66-jarige vrouw op een fiets raakte gistermiddag ernstig gewond na een aanrijding met een lijnbus en ligt in kritieke toestand in het ziekenhuis. De afgelopen jaren was het er al meermaals raak. De 66-jarige vrouw werd aangereden op een oversteekplaats, ter hoogte van de Hulstweg. Ze werd op straat gereanimeerd en is met spoed naar het ziekenhuis overgebracht. In september 2025 overleed een paar honderd meter verderop een voetganger na een aanrijding met een lijnbus. Vorig jaar al petitie Volgens een aantal buurtbewoners die wij spreken was het wachten op het volgende ongeluk. "Ze rijden zo hard hier", vertelt een vaste bezoeker van de sportschool. "Ik stap meestal van mijn fiets af als ik oversteek", laat een andere vrouw weten. Buurtbewoners zijn vorig jaar al een petitie begonnen om aandacht te vragen aan de verkeersonveiligheid op de Klaprozenweg. Omwonenden trekken al langere tijd aan de bel: zo startten ze de petitie 'Maak de Klaprozenweg veilig!'. Een bewoner die wij spreken vindt dat er te weinig actie werd ondernomen na de petitie. "We hebben uiteindelijk nooit iets gehoord", vertelt ze. "Zoveelste zware ongeluk" Stadsdeel Noord heeft vandaag gereageerd op het ongeluk. "Dit is het zoveelste zware ongeluk op de Klaprozenweg", schrijven ze. "We gaan opnieuw in overleg met de Vervoerregio en met de betrokken afdelingen over verdere veiligheidsmaatregelen." In 2023 plaatste de gemeente na een ongeluk al betonblokken. Ook toen was er een lijnbus betrokken bij het ongeval. Het politieonderzoek naar de toedracht van het ongeluk loopt nog steeds. De recherche komt graag in contact met getuigen. Daarnaast is er slachtofferhulp beschikbaar voor mensen die het hebben zien gebeuren.
