Afgelopen week maakte Stichting Mainline, die zich inzet voor de gezondheid van drugsgebruikers, bekend dat ze dit jaar noodgedwongen moet stoppen omdat het Rijk hun financiering terugtrekt. Daarmee gaat ook veel kennis en onderzoeksdata verloren die veldwerkers dagelijks verzamelen. Hiermee ondersteunen ze hulporganisaties voor verslaafde dak- en thuislozen. Nu Mainline verdwijnt, vrezen ze voor meer overlast op straat. Katja Berends is veldwerker van Stichting Mainline. Vandaag zoekt ze drugsverslaafden op bij de gebruikersbus naast het Oosterpark. Een mobiele gebruikersruimte bemand door hulpverleners van Stichting De Regenboog waar verslaafden ook terechtkunnen voor schone spuiten, iets te eten en te drinken en een gesprek met een maatschappelijk werker. Terwijl Berends vraagt hoe het met de verslaafden gaat, helpt ze hen met het verlengen van hun basepijpjes, die vaak heel kort zijn. Met een langere pijp kan de hete damp van de verhitte crack die ze inademen beter afkoelen en dat geeft minder schade aan hun longen. Mainline probeert zo de gezondheidsschade te beperken van drugsverslaafden en het geeft veldwerkers ook de kans om makkelijk het gesprek met hen aan te gaan en kennis te verzamelen voor onderzoek. Hiermee ondersteunt Mainline de hulpinstanties in Amsterdam, maar ook in de rest van Nederland. "Zo zijn we vandaag te weten gekomen dat veel jonge drugsgebruikers nu al de longziekte COPD hebben, dat is alarmerend." Daarnaast geeft Mainline ook bijna 100 trainingen per jaar aan hulpverleners in het hele land. Dat stopt dus binnenkort en dat raakt ook zorgorganisaties voor verslaafde dak- en thuislozen. Fay Toxopeus, die de hulpverlening bij de gebruikersbus van Stichting De regenboog coördineert, baalt dat Mainline moet stoppen. "Wij hebben heel veel aan hun kennis en niet de tijd om zo diepgravend onderzoek te doen", zegt ze. De gemeente Amsterdam sprong vorig jaar al bij door de jaarlijkse subsidie van Mainline van 80.000 euro te verhogen naar 155.000 euro. Maar Mainline, dat landelijk werkzaam is, redt het niet zonder de 3 ton Rijkssubsidie. Ancella Voets van Stichting Mainline vindt het onbegrijpelijk dat het Rijk geen geld meer wil geven en zegt dat gemeentes dit zelf moeten bekostigen. "Wij zijn een landelijke organisatie en hebben die Rijkssubsidie van drie ton echt nodig. We hebben niet de capaciteit om bij alle 342 gemeentes langs te gaan, Wij zijn met 10 mensen waarvan meer de helft veldwerkers zijn, we hebben niet eens de capaciteit om bij de 15 grootste gemeentes langs te gaan." Voets denkt dan ook dat met het wegvallen van Mainline er meer nadruk komt te liggen op repressie, zoals handhaving en terugdringen van drugsoverlast op straat. "De overheid raakt het zicht kwijt op heleboel mensen die ze niet meer bereikt en ook de politie zal straks meer capaciteit moeten inzetten voor het oplossen van problemen. Dat is niet nodig als je zorg aan die mensen biedt." De komende maanden bouwt Stichting Mainline haar werkzaamheden af. In De Straten van Amsterdam trekt AT5 de stad in op zoek naar bijzondere verhalen van Amsterdammers uit alle hoeken van de stad. Deze week gaan we naar de Oudezijds Achterburgwal, naar de Bananenbar. Syar is wereldberoemd op de Wallen. In zijn café De Deugniet staat hij regelmatig achter en óp de bar en trekt zelfs een internationaal publiek. "Een bruine kroeg met een Afghaanse switch", is hoe Syar zijn café omschrijft. Met Syar gaan we naar de beruchte Bananenbar en ontdekken we de oorsprong van de bananentruc die in de jaren 70 als kerkelijk ritueel werd uitgevoerd... Vroeger was de Bananenbar onderdeel van de Kerk van Satan waar Harriëtte de Moeder Overste was. Daar maakte zij in pij met zwarte kap en 'Baphomet' om haar nek de dienst uit. Als UvA-student kreeg zij deze rol als bedrijfsleider: "Het was knoertgezellig, het waren andere tijden dan nu. Dat satanisme moet je met een korreltje zout nemen", aldus Harriëtte. Door zich voor te doen als religieuze instelling kon de Satanskerk jarenlang belasting ontduiken. De bananentrucs zijn al die tijd gebleven, maar de nonnenpakjes moesten weg. Nog steeds is de Bananenbar een erg populair concept, inmiddels onder leiding van Dylan Meijer. Dylan is de (stief)zoon van Jan Otten, en afgestudeerd arts. Hij geeft ons een kijkje achter de schermen van de huidige situatie in de Bananenbar. The discovery of the lost Atocha ship and its treasure was the result of a coordinated effort and some out-of-the-box thinking. Historian Eugene Lyon’s research led to the discovery that the ship was likely sunk 100 miles away from where previous searches had taken place. But knowing the location wasn’t enough - now there was the issue of the muddy waters obscuring the divers’ view. Mel proposed a genius solution - by placing tubes next to the propellers, clear water was shot down to the search area. Not only did this improve visibility, but the blasting water also dug out a hole, revealing an enormous clue…

Retired U.S. Army colonel Lawrence Wilkerson says the Trump administration is committing grave war crimes in its military assault on Iran. Wilkerson served as chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell in the run-up to the Iraq war and has since become a vocal critic of U.S. foreign policy.

Pork and Prosciutto Tortellini with Butter & Sage Serves: 4 Prep time: 1 hour, plus resting Cook time: 10 mins Ingredients 100g prosciutto 80g sliced mortadella 60g grated Parmesan cheese 200g pork mince 1 egg Freshly cracked black pepper, to season Freshly grated nutmeg 125g butter ½ bunch sage leaves Pasta dough 400g ‘00’ flour, plus extra for dusting 4 eggs 20ml extra virgin olive oil Sea salt, to season 3 tbsp fine semolina, for dusting Method Step 1: Make the pasta dough Place the flour on a clean work surface and make a well in the center. Crack the eggs into the center and season with a pinch of salt. Add the olive oil and using a fork, whisk from the middle outside until you reach a clumpy dough, then use a bench scraper to bring it together. Knead for 4-5 minutes, or until the dough is nice and smooth. Cover the dough in plastic wrap or in a ziplock bag. Set aside in the fridge to rest for a minimum 2 hours, ideally up to 24 hours. Step 2: Make the filling Finely chop the prosciutto and mortadella and place in a food processor. Add the parmesan, pork mince, egg, black pepper and some freshly grated nutmeg. Pulse a few times, until just combined into a smooth, homogenous paste, taking care to not overmix. Transfer the filling to a bowl, cover and refrigerate until you are ready to use it. Step 3: Roll out the pasta dough Divide the pasta dough in half and keep one covered while you work with the first. Roll each dough out gently on a large board or clean work surface, dusting lightly with some semolina, to about 1cm thick. Roll the dough through a pasta machine on the biggest setting twice. Do an envelope fold on the sheet and press down to seal with your hands, then return to the pasta machine on the same setting. Roll it through twice more. Turn the pasta machine setting down 1 notch, then pass the dough through twice. Continue to do this through each setting, until you have a long, thin pasta sheet (only use semolina to dust the machine when necessary to avoid sticking). Cut the pasta sheet in half to make 2 long even sheets and place on a lightly floured bench. Repeat with the other portion of dough. Cut the sheets into 50mm x 50mm (2in x 2in) squares. Place a heaped teaspoon of filling in the centre of each square and fold into a tortellini shape, wetting the edges of the dough to seal. Transfer the pieces to a tray sprinkled with semolina. Refrigerate, uncovered, until ready to cook. Step 4: Cook the pasta Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil over high heat. Cook the tortellini for 6-7 minutes, until just tender. Melt the butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook until it starts to foam and just brown and smells nutty. Add the sage leaves and toss to coat in the butter. Remove the tortellini with a slotted spoon and add straight into the butter. Toss to combine and serve immediately.

Ondernemers en bezoekers in de binnenstad hebben te maken met meer verbale en fysieke agressie. Ook zien ze het aantal winkeldiefstallen toenemen en ervaren ze overlast van daklozen en verwarde mensen. Dat blijkt uit de jaarlijkse Amsterdam City Index, het overzicht van het ondernemersklimaat in de binnenstad van vereniging Amsterdam City.  Elk jaar vullen ondernemers een enquête in. De veiligheid in de binnenstad scoort dit jaar een opvallend laag rapportcijfer: een 5.  "Er gebeurt hier veel in de avond, ook overdag trouwens," zegt Maikel van Eijk, general manager van Park Plaza Victoria, het hotel recht tegenover het Centraal Station. "Er is sowieso veel vervuiling en vandalisme. Er is eigenlijk geen dag dat er géén graffiti is gespoten op het pand, of dat er mensen op plekken hebben geürineerd of andere uitwerpselen hebben achtergelaten." Ook heeft Van Eijk het idee dat het zakkenrollen is toegenomen. "Dat krijgen we ook van de gasten terug. Daarnaast begint het aantal daklozen natuurlijk toe te nemen. Ik begrijp dat er af en toe wat veegacties zijn, maar dan krijg je toch een beetje dat waterbedeffect deze kant op, vooral vanuit de Wallen. Dat merken we hier wel, helaas." Uit de City Index blijkt dat twee derde van de ondernemers (zeer) ontevreden is over de veiligheid op straat. Een respondent: "De binnenstad is minder veilig door de hoeveelheid en frequentie van demonstraties, soms met hoogoplopende emoties, en waar de politie eerder wil de-escaleren in plaats van optreden en handhaven".  Vorig jaar waren er 3203 geregistreerde demonstraties in de stad, 10 procent meer dan in 2024.  Benno Leeser, eigenaar van Gassan Diamonds en voorzitter van vereniging Amsterdam City: "Het zorgt natuurlijk af en toe voor onrust. We hebben ook verschillende demonstraties gehad op hetzelfde tijdstip; daar moeten we goed mee omgaan. Dat men niet met elkaar geconfronteerd wordt. Ik denk aan mijn winkelruiten, maar ik denk niet alleen aan ons bedrijf. Ik denk aan de hele stad. Mensen moeten zich veilig voelen als ze in de stad komen." Behalve zorgen over de veiligheid zijn er dit jaar ook weer veel klachten over de slechte bereikbaarheid en het vuil op straat. Ook geven ondernemers aan dat het consumentenvertrouwen minder is geworden, en dat de dalende koopkracht zorgt voor minder koopbereidheid. Ook maatregelen om het massatoerisme in te dammen worden door de ondernemers gevoeld. Zo ook bij Park Plaza Victoria, zegt general manager Van Eijk: "Het is op het moment wel lastig. We hebben natuurlijk sinds kort te maken met de btw-verhoging en dat voelen we als hotel wel. Ik merk dat de bezetting iets terugloopt en dat de kamerprijzen onder druk staan. We kunnen iets minder vragen voor een kamer vergeleken met vorig jaar. Waarschijnlijk door een teruglopende vraag. Ik maak me niet superveel zorgen, maar het ondernemersklimaat heeft er weleens beter voor gestaan." Net als eerdere jaren klagen de ondernemers in de binnenstad over de grote afstand tussen hen en de Stopera.
