Frank Mansro is afgelopen weekend op 78-jarige leeftijd overleden aan een hartstilstand. De eigenaar van het gelijknamige café met Surinaamse roots in de Eerste Sweelinckstraat was voor veel omwonenden en stamgasten een geliefde man. Mansro stond in zijn leven niet alleen achter de toog, maar was onder meer actief als radiomaker en kandidaat-lid van de Humanistische Partij. Frank Mansro groeide op in Paramaribo en kwam als 28-jarige in 1975 naar Nederland. Zijn idee was om hier slechts acht maanden te verblijven tijdens zijn verlof van zijn werk, maar dat werd een heel leven. In de jaren na zijn aankomst werkte hij in een distributiecentrum, volgde hij een studie en was hij lang logistiek medewerker van Fokker op Schiphol. In 1991 besloot Mansro een café in de Pijp over te kopen waar hij samen met zijn zoon tot op heden eigenaar van was. Het was de plek waar hij al langer kwam met zijn muziekgroep die Surinaamse kawina-muziek speelde. In zijn café voelde Mansro zich als een vis in het water, waar hij altijd met iedereen in gesprek ging. Hoewel de buurt de afgelopen jaren steeds hipper werd, vond Mansro dat het café zijn oude karakter moest behouden. Tot grote vreugde van veel stamgasten die dagelijks in zijn zaak een biertje kwamen drinken. "Hij was echt ontzettend veel", vertelt een vaste gast van het café. "Echt een soort buurtvader. En een heel open, ruimdenkend warm mens." Naast zijn werk als barman was Mansro ook voorzitter van de standhoudersvereniging van het Kwaku Festival en behartigde hij de belangen van Surinamers in Nederland. In 2006 deed Mansro met de Humanistische Partij mee aan de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen in de stad. Een iconisch moment volgens zijn dochter. "Mijn vader in een politieke partij?", lacht Maureen Mansro. "Ik had echt zoiets van: 'waar gaan we nu weer heen?'" Volgens haar was het desondanks een logische stap voor haar vader. "Hij wilde mensen bij elkaar houden." Dat deed hij volgens zoon Marciano altijd al in het café. Zijn vader organiseerde daar, naast alle feestjes, discussies en gesprekken met iedereen. "Hij is de Pijp ook niet uit", zegt hij trots als hij naast de toog van het café staat. "Hij blijft hier altijd voortleven." In het programma Waldy Hoort Stemmen bezoekt verslaggever Waldy van Geenen met een stembus verschillende buurten in de stad, om te peilen wat Amsterdammers deze gemeenteraadsverkiezingen gaan stemmen. Eén van de kinderen van de familie Van Gent is inmiddels verhuisd naar Eindhoven voor de studie, maar er woont er nog één thuis die ook graag zelfstandig wil wonen. "Dat is heel erg moeilijk op dit moment natuurlijk", vertel Chris van Gent. Haar man Willem vindt het goed dat zijn voorkeurspartij GroenLinks focust op sociale huur, maar volgens hem heeft Amsterdam ook behoefte aan een ander soort woning: "Voor jonge mensen, met nog geen hoog inkomen moeten er ook genoeg huizen zijn." De reden voor GroenLinks is voor zowel Chris als Willem een ideologische. "Ik denk dat we er met z'n allen beter van worden als we opkomen voor mensen die het minder goed hebben. Er zijn gewoon mensen die de dingen niet zo goed kunnen regelen voor zichzelf." Als het gaat om aandacht voor woningen voor starters of jongeren, zouden de Van Gents ook terecht kunnen bij D66 of de VVD, maar een overstap naar de andere kant van het politieke spectrum gaat hen een stap te ver. Chris: "Op de VVD zou ik sowieso niet stemmen en dat heeft heel veel met de landelijke afdeling van de partij te maken." Bij de laatste gemeenteraadsverkiezingen waren de PvdA en GroenLinks samen goed voor 27% van de stemmen, met daarachter D66 met 15%. Bij de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen was het in deze wijk nek aan nek. When she was growing up, the writer Lindy West was bombarded with negative messages about being fat. The whole world seemed to think she didn’t deserve love unless she lost weight. Sumac Roast Salmon Ingredients 800g salmon fillet, skin on 1 tbsp olive oil sea salt, to season ½ tsp ground sumac zest of 1 lemon Method Step 1: Preheat the oven to 200°C fan forced (390°F) and then line a large baking tray with baking paper. Place the salmon, skin side down on the tray. Drizzle the salmon flesh with olive oil, then season generously with some salt, then the sumac and lemon zest. Place the salmon in the oven and check it after 12 minutes. You want the internal temperature to reach 50°C (122°F). Set it aside to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
