Kabelbaan over het IJ lijkt ver weg; in steeds meer andere wereldsteden hebben ze er wél een. Een kabelbaan over het IJ: het plan ligt al meer dan tien jaar op tafel, maar daar wordt het binnenkort misschien wel definitief vanaf geveegd. Vorige week stemde een meerderheid van de gemeenteraad namelijk tegen. In veel andere wereldsteden hebben ze wel zo'n kabelbaan, met wisselend succes. Het zou een uitdagende quizvraag kunnen zijn: wat hebben we niet in Amsterdam, maar is er wel in wereldsteden als Londen, Parijs, Mexico-Stad, Rio de Janeiro en New York? Als het aan een meerderheid van de gemeenteraad ligt, blijft het antwoord op deze vraag: een kabelbaan. "Er is nu veel discussie over de kabelbaan in New York, omdat hij meer en meer gebruikt wordt door toeristen" John Surico, journalist mobiliteit in New York In New York bijvoorbeeld, brengt de 'Roosevelt Island Tram' je al sinds 1976 over de East River van en naar Roosevelt Island. "Misschien ritten voor alleen bewoners, of hogere prijzen voor toeristen. Maar het blijft lastig om te bepalen wat het best werkt", zegt Surico. Eind vorig jaar opende in Parijs de langste stedelijke kabelbaan van Europa. Nadrukkelijk bedoeld voor forenzen en dus niet voor toeristen. De kabelbaan brengt je van en naar vier voorsteden van Parijs. Voor Parijzenaars is dit nu de snelste manier om die trajecten te overbruggen. Het is een belangrijke voorspeller voor succes onder de lokale bevolking, zegt Surico. "Als het een gat in het ov-netwerk opvult en het delen van de stad met elkaar verbindt die nu niet met elkaar verbonden zijn, dan denk ik dat het het overwegen waard is. Ik zou het idee niet afschieten met als reden dat te veel mensen er gebruik van gaan maken." In 2027 neemt het college waarschijnlijk een definitief besluit over de kabelbaan in Amsterdam. When taking off, the transmission is at 0 rpm. If you were to just suddenly dump the clutch you would expose the transmission to all the engine rpm and torque instantly, you and your passengers will jerk forward, the drivetrain gets a nasty shock, and the engine likely stalls, nobody’s happy. However, when you release the clutch gradually the transmission rpm also rises gradually. No shocks no stalls. The question we must ask at this point is how does the clutch synchronize the engine and the transmission speed? It's just a solid object, there’s nothing special about it. The clutch achieves its goals by slipping. Clutch slipping is essentially a difference in speed between the flywheel and the clutch itself while the two are already in contact with each other. Slipping occurs whenever the friction force is low enough to be overcome by torque produced by the engine. However, if you have ever slipped the clutch too much you have probably caught a whiff of a smell that resulted from it. This is the smell of a burning clutch. Clutch slipping is essentially the rubbing of two contact surfaces. The friction between to rubbing surfaces creates heat. So if we slip or rub the clutch against the flywheel too much we can easily increase the temperature of the surfaces to the point that they start burning. Ok, let’s say that we want to slip the clutch burt we don’t want to burn it. How do we do that? Easy, just sink it in oil. A motorcycle clutch is precisely that. The beauty of a wet clutch is that is very difficult to burn it, even if you have very little clutch operation finesse. You can slip it repeatedly, you can dump the clutch repeatedly but there will be no nasty clutch burning smell. Ok, now let’s say we want to step things up even further. Now let’s say that we want the ability to slip the clutch without burning it but we also don’t want to have to do the slipping ourselves. And we want lightning fast gear shifting, let’s say 8 miliseconds. No problem! Enter the dual clutch transmission. It’s essentially your standard geared manual transmission with two input shafts and two wet clutch packs together with some mechatronics and actuators instead of a clutch pedal. A dual clutch transmission can shift faster than any human can shift a conventional manual transmission because it has two clutch packs. When you are in one gear one of input shafts is used and one the clutch packs is engaged, while the other clutch pack is disengaged but it already has the next gear pre-selected. Ok so this is the perfect transmission? Well, that’s a subjective thing but dual clutch transmissions definitely accomplish their mission. They have a fun factor but are at the same time very convenient and easy to use while being capable of handling very high torque. Their downsides are that they are more complex and expensive and require more maintenance compared to a conventional manual. This is because clutch packs wear out because they must slip and when they slip they loose tiny particles. These particules end up circulating through the oil. This is why motorcycle oil changes color quickly. It’s the clutch particles. And so the transmission oil and filter must be changed. In contrast to this manual transmission fluid needs to be changed far less frequently, some manufacturers even claim it doesn’t need to be changed. But as is often the case, when manufacturers make something that’s nice and that sells, they tend ask the next question and that question iiiis: how can we make more money from this. Enter the dry dual clutch transmission. The answer to that question. NManufacturers will tell you that they have introduced it because it is more efficient. Because the clutch packs rotate in air there’s no oil drag on them so they have an easier time rotating which contributes to an efficiency improvement of 1-3%. Because they’re more efficient the vehicle needs to use less fuel and thus they are better for the environment. In reality, dry dual clutch transmissions are not cleaner, they simply trade one pollutant for another. They reduce c02 emissions but they dramatically increase particulate matter emissions. That’s because clutch packs are not sealed. They need to be cooled by air so they have ventilation holes. At the same time as clutch packs wear they create clutch dust. This dust escapes through ventilation holes into the air we all breathe. Een kabelbaan over het IJ: het plan ligt al meer dan tien jaar op tafel, maar daar wordt het binnenkort misschien wel definitief vanaf geveegd. Vorige week stemde een meerderheid van de gemeenteraad namelijk tegen. In veel andere wereldsteden hebben ze wel zo'n kabelbaan. Bijvoorbeeld in New York.  Het zou een uitdagende quizvraag kunnen zijn: wat hebben we niet in Amsterdam, maar is er wel in wereldsteden als Londen, Parijs, Mexico-Stad, Rio de Janeiro en New York? Als het aan een meerderheid van de gemeenteraad ligt, blijft het antwoord op deze vraag: een kabelbaan.  In New York bijvoorbeeld, brengt de Roosevelt Island Tram je al sinds 1976 over de East River.  Aanvankelijk maakten vooral New Yorkers gebruik van de kabelbaan. "Maar er is nu veel discussie over de enige kabelbaan die we hebben", zegt John Surico, freelance journalist in New York, gespecialiseerd in mobiliteit. De reden daarvoor? "Hij wordt meer en meer gebruikt door toeristen", aldus Surico.  En laat dat nu net het schrikbeeld zijn van de gemeente Amsterdam. De sprong over het IJ heeft toch vooral tot doel het verspreiden van het verkeer van en naar Noord. In plaats daarvan een nieuwe toeristische trekpleister creëren, is zeker niet de bedoeling. In New York worden meerdere maatregelen overwogen om de balans New Yorkers/toeristen weer een beetje gelijker te krijgen. "Misschien ritten voor alleen bewoners, of hogere prijzen voor toeristen. Maar het blijft lastig om te bepalen wat het best werkt." Ook in Londen en Barcelona pakken vooral toeristen de kabelbaan. Eind vorig jaar nog opende in Parijs de langste stedelijke kabelbaan van Europa. Nadrukkelijk bedoeld voor forenzen en dus niet voor toeristen. De kabelbaan brengt je van en naar vier voorsteden van Parijs. Voor Parijzenaars is dit nu de snelste manier om die trajecten te overbruggen. Het is een belangrijke voorspeller voor succes onder de lokale bevolking, zegt Surico. "Als het een gat in het ov-netwerk opvult en het delen van de stad met elkaar verbindt die nu niet met elkaar verbonden zijn, dan denk ik dat het het overwegen waard is. Maar ik zou het idee niet afschieten met als reden dat te veel mensen er gebruik van gaan maken." In 2027 neemt het college waarschijnlijk een definitief besluit over de kabelbaan. Like a computer, the brain is a problem-solving machine that stores memories and processes information. But despite the advances in AI, many challenge whether this analogy captures the essence of the mind. Computers use transistors to build elementary logic gates, enabling them to store files exactly, in 0s and 1s. They are precise and repeatable. Human brains, in contrast, are biological—the neurons do not operate as simple logic gates, but have thousands of inputs, and their output is dependent on past activity and their current internal state. Remove a computer’s processor, and it breaks. But humans can survive with only one brain hemisphere. Fundamentally, brains think, they have perception, and are conscious. Is it a mistake to see the mind as computational? Are computers, at root, limited machines with little in common with the sophistication of living things? Cori Bush is running for Congress again. Tragically, however, due to industry conservatism, government interference, and other factors, the project was soon cancelled and the sole prototype cut up for scrap.

What does fighting for freedom mean for Iranians— when they no longer live in their homeland? People have been protesting on the streets of Iran since the end of 2025. They’re demanding change and a new government. And those demonstrations have spread to Europe too, where they include a large number of Iranians living in exile. Among them is 25-year-old Romina, who continues her political activism in Germany. During the Woman, Life, Freedom movement she became a target of the Iranian authorities and had to flee the country. Now in Hamburg, which is home to the biggest Iranian community in the EU, she’s building a new life for herself while fighting for freedom and change back home — through protests, raising awareness and sharing her own story. We accompany Romina on a typical day: juggling German exams with demonstrations and worrying about her family in Iran as the Internet is shut down. She tells us what life is like on the ground and how, with a decades-old regime of political repression, criticism is punished and protests are often put down violently. At the same time, people continue to take to the streets, and the global diaspora stands with them — with large-scale rallies attended by tens of thousands of people. In 1990, East and West Germany became one - with the same flag. 🇵🇱 In 1918, after World War I, Poland regained its independence. Its territory had been divided for over a century by the Russian, German, and Austro-Hungarian empires. A year later, the country officially adopted its flag, which has remained unchanged ever since. 🇭🇺 About Hungary, only the ratio changed in 1990. Before, the ratio was 2:3, now it is 1:2. The colours remained the same, and there is no coat of arms in the official flag since 1957.
