Buurtbewoners rond het Vondelpark zijn opgelucht dat de gemeente ingrijpt tegen de overlast in de buurt. Ze zeggen dat ze zich er steeds vaker onveilig voelen en dat de criminaliteit toeneemt. As news broke of the student, Ellie Aghayeva, and her detention, students and community members rallied en masse demanding her release and an end to immigration enforcement on campus. Due to restrictions implemented by the university in response to pro-Palestine protests, the students were unable to protest on campus proper, but instead took to nearby streets. Aghayeva was released Thursday afternoon, shortly after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani brought up her case during a meeting with President Donald Trump to discuss housing. “For that decision to be quickly flipped is remarkable because it shows the power of opposition, but also how loose and flippant these arrests are, and how maybe unnecessary they are,” says Zeteo's Prem Thakker, who has been reporting on the case. Columbia’s active response, including its legal support of Aghayeva, marked a departure from previous high-profile immigration arrests of its students. Mohsen Mahdawi, a former Columbia University student who last year was also detained by DHS, says Aghayeva’s arrest in campus housing is a direct result of the university administration’s abdication of its responsibility to protect its students. “Columbia University administration did not have the backbone, in fact, to file any lawsuits against the Trump administration for violating basic rights,” says Mahdawi. “This is actually what the Trump administration intended to do, which is to fracture liberal institutions and turn the administrations against their students.” Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on over 1,500 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. The Clintons were called by House Republicans to testify on their relationships with Jeffrey Epstein, but Levine emphasizes that credible allegations tying either the Clintons or Donald Trump to Epstein’s criminal activities are currently limited. Meanwhile, files known to contain allegations of sexual abuse of a minor by President Trump have been withheld or removed by the Department of Justice. Levine says that the focus on the Clintons is a political distraction targeted at Trump’s “perceived enemies” while millions of documents on the Epstein case that could directly implicate his other associates have still not been released or unredacted for the public. “There are men who are out there who took part in the sex trafficking that have not been brought to justice,” says Levine. Komende zondag wordt op de Dam een woonprotest gehouden. Volgens de organisatoren is er na het eerste grote woonprotest vijf jaar geleden nauwelijks wat veranderd, behalve dat alles alleen maar duurder is geworden. Onderdeel van het protest zondag is de 'Wooncrisis City Sightseeing Tour', een wandeling langs 'ontruimde leegstand, dure yuppenhokken en uitgemolken huisjes'. Dat de wooncrisis nog niet is opgelost, komt door de organisatoren van het woonprotest door falend beleid van gemeente en overheid. De huren zijn te hoog, sociale woningen worden verkocht en vastgoedinvesteerders uit binnen- en buitenland verzieken de markt, is de boodschap. Medeorganisator Nina Boelsums: "Het eerste woonprotest werd vijf jaar geleden georganiseerd, en je ziet dat er nog steeds 22.000 lege woningen zijn in Amsterdam, terwijl we 11.000 daklozen hebben. Er staat twee keer zoveel leeg als dat er daklozen zijn. Studenten betalen 1000 euro voor zes vierkante meter. In feite is er heel weinig veranderd in Amsterdam, behalve dat alles nog duurder is geworden." Komende zondag wordt vanaf de Dam een 'Wooncrisis City Sightseeing Tour' gehouden. Boelsums: "In heel Amsterdam kan je gewoon zien hoe groot de wooncrisis is. Denk aan leegstaande panden, denk aan yuppenflats, aan verkochte sociale huur. We lopen een rondje door Amsterdam en lichten die plekken uit, om te laten zien hoe erg de wooncrisis hier nog is." Oude V&D-pand Samen met Boelsums en Louisa Bergsma - medeorganisator en voorzitter van Platform Wooncoöperaties Amsterdam - bezoeken we drie van de plekken die ook komende zondag worden aangedaan. Om te beginnen met het oude V&D-pand aan het Rokin. Bergsma: "Met het Platform Wooncoöperaties Amsterdam hebben we bedacht dat de V&D eigenlijk een prachtige wooncoöperatie zou zijn. Lekker veel ruimte, midden in het centrum van de stad. Je ziet dat er nu een soort autoshowroom in zit waar niemand in de stad wat aan heeft. Wij zouden hier wel iets moois van kunnen maken, en dat laten we zondag ook zien. Samen met een architect hebben we alvast een tekening gemaakt." Ook Fabel Friet op de Runstraat ligt zondag op de route. Bergsma: "Omdat dat eigenlijk een icoon is de laatste tijd van het massatoerisme in de stad. En massatoerisme zorgt ervoor dat vastgoedbeleggers massaal hierheen worden getrokken, dat de prijzen steeds hoger worden, waardoor niet alleen de huizen, maar ook de horeca en andere dingen in de stad steeds duurder worden. En voor Amsterdammers gewoon niet meer betaalbaar zijn." De organisatoren van het protest willen de wooncrisis zo vlak voor de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen bovenaan op de agenda laten zetten. Boelsums: "Behoudt alle sociale huur die er is en bouw er ook meer sociale huur bij. Het is belangrijk dat iedere Amsterdammer in een betaalbare woning kan wonen. Wat is betaalbaar? Sociaal. Bouw gewoon alleen maar sociaal. En kick alle binnen- en buitenlandse vastgoedinvesteerders uit de stad. Zorg dat de huizen weer voor mensen zijn en niet voor winst." Bergsma vult aan: "Handhaaf het leegstandsverbod. Geen leegstand meer en sta kraken toe." Verder willen ze dat ook dakloze mensen een huis kunnen krijgen, de huren niet verder stijgen, dat er een stop komt op tijdelijke huurcontracten en dat er meer ruimte komt voor wooncoöperaties. Hotel Mokum De laatste plek die we vandaag aandoen is Hotel Mokum aan de Manixstraat. Het hotel werd vijf jaar geleden gekraakt en daarna weer ontruimd. Sindsdien staat het leeg. "De reden dat we zondag ook langs hotel Mokum lopen, is dat het natuurlijk herinnert aan wat we in Amsterdam te danken hebben aan de kraakbeweging", zegt Boelsums. "Denk aan Paradiso, denk aan de Nieuwmarktbuurt. Deze hele stad leeft en bloeit op de oude kraakbeweging uit de jaren tachtig. Ik denk dat het belangrijk is dat we dat in gedachten houden tijdens deze grote wooncrisis. Daarom gaan we een kleine herdenking doen tijdens de rondloop. In De Spots van… neemt Niels Oosthoek FC Centrum mee langs zijn favoriete plekkies in het Centrum van Amsterdam. Podcastmaker, presentator en één van de Greedy Guys, maar vooral iemand bij wie plekken onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn met herinneringen. We beginnen bij een plek vol jeugdherinneringen: Nationale Opera & Ballet. Zijn broer was hier professioneel balletdanser en als puber leek het ballet nog een beetje ver van zijn bed. Maar naarmate de jaren verstreken, groeide ook Niels’ liefde voor het ballet. Er zit iets magisch in deze plek — iets wat je pas echt voelt als je er bent. Nog steeds komt hij hier graag, soms zelfs alleen. Daarna fietsen we door naar de Kerkstraat, naar zijn hidden gem Casa del Gusto. Tijdens zijn studententijd woonde Niels ernaast, waardoor hij hier vrijwel elke dag kwam. Zo lang komt hij hier al. Het is een plek waar ze de tijd voor je nemen en met veel amore vertellen over hun producten. Zo’n zaak die je langzaam maar zeker in je routine sluipt. We sluiten af in het hol van de leeuw: de Wallen. Tussen de stegen vind je tattoo-artist Etienne Order, die vanuit zijn shop Order Tattoos al jaren vaste hand levert. Een plek waar vakmanschap centraal staat en waar Niels zich duidelijk thuis voelt. -- Wij zijn FC Centrum, een FanClub voor onze oude binnenstad.
