Het huis is sinds 1989 bedoeld voor studentes, met z’n twaalven delen ze hier het lief en leed van het studentenleven. Jaarlijks komen er nieuwe meiden bij en nemen anderen de afgestudeerden afscheid. De zitkamer is het kloppend hart. Deze week zijn de langverwachte werkzaamheden aan de Linnaeusstraat van start gegaan. De straat en een stukje Middenweg gaan volledig op de schop. Als alles volgens planning loopt, is het werk eind 2027 afgerond. Het project heeft de nodige gevolgen voor bewoners, automobilisten en fietsers. Sinds maandag is het stuk Linnaeusstraat vanaf het kruispunt met het Oosterpark en de Wijttenbachstraat tot en met de Eerste Van Swindenstraat afgesloten voor auto's en fietsers. Het gaat om de eerste fase van de grootschalige werkzaamheden die al langer op de planning stonden. Voetgangers kunnen nog er nog wel langs, ook lopen er veel fietsers met hun fiets aan de hand. "Ik doe in de stad alles op de fiets. Het is een reis met hindernissen", zegt een voorbijganger. Veiliger en groener Volgens de gemeente waren de straten toe aan vervanging. Delen van de trambaan worden vervangen, ook komen er nieuwe kabels, leidingen en riolering. Verder worden de kruispunten overzichtelijker en veiliger. Bovendien wordt de straat groener. Zo komen er ruim 50 nieuwe bomen. "Ik snap dat het moet gebeuren, maar het is wel vervelend", zegt een buurtbewoner over de werkzaamheden. Een ander is een stuk positiever. "Ik ben zo blij dat ze de straat aan het maken zijn. Dat is goed voor fietsers en anderen omdat het veiliger is. Een grotere straat is beter, eerlijk gezegd." Meerdere opbrekingen in de buurt In april start ook het andere werk aan het kruispunt waar de werkzaamheden deze week zijn begonnen. In de maanden daarna volgt in fases de rest van de Linnaeusstraat. De werkzaamheden eindigen op de Middenweg in december 2027. Door de werkzaamheden zijn er flink wat omleidingen. Verkeersregelaars en borden wijzen ter plekke de juiste weg. Ook het openbaar vervoer rijdt anders dan normaal. Al die omleidingen vind je op de site van het GVB. Automobilisten en fietsers hebben sinds ongeveer een halfjaar geleden ook al last van ander werk in Oost: de afsluiting van het Alexanderplein, dat niet zo ver van de Linnaeusstraat ligt. Dat werk duurt nog tot en met juni van dit jaar. Ook wordt er tot juli 2026 gewerkt aan de Ruyschstraat. In 2017, Chicago's first purpose-built micro-apartment building opened, and people couldn't understand why anyone would choose to live in 350 square feet. But since then, these tiny units have become the norm in cities across the country — renting for $1,000 to over $2,000 a month, roughly what a two-bedroom costs elsewhere. Yesterday I showed you an object I discovered at an outdoor shooting range, which I initially assumed to be a shotgun shell or flare cartridge. In reality, this is a Federal Firestick, a blank cartridge designed for use with the Traditions Nitrofire in-line muzzleloading rifle. This system addresses most of the inherent shortcomings of muzzleloading firearms while still meeting the technical definition of "muzzleloader" for use during so-called "primitive" hunting seasons. Een half uur later dan gepland kwam hij uiteindelijk onder begeleiding van een twintigtal beveiligers aan bij zijn nieuwe coffeeshop. "Dit was echt supercool", zegt een jonge fan die met zijn vader op de opening is afgekomen. Niet veel later vertrekt Snoop alweer naar zijn andere coffeeshop, op de Marnixstraat. Recipe Ingredients Dough 300g (2 cups) plain flour 60ml (¼ cup) olive oil 120ml warm water sea salt, to season Filling 1 brown onion 1 tbsp olive oil 300g beef mince 40g (¼ cup) pine nuts ½ tsp ground cinnamon small bunch flat leaf parsley 2 lemons sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to season olive oil, for frying Method Step 1: Make the dough Mix the flour, olive oil and water in the bowl of a stand mixer with the dough hook attachment, or in a large bowl. Season with salt and mix until it comes together. Knead for 5 minutes, until smooth, then set aside in a bowl. Cover and rest for 30 minutes. Step 2: Cook the filling Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Crumble in the beef mince and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until well browned. Finely dice the onion and add to the pan, cook for 2-3 minutes until softened. Stir in the pine nuts and cook for 1 minute, until toasted. Stir in the cinnamon and season with salt and pepper. Turn off the heat and add the zest and juice of the lemons. Mix well then set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly Finely chop the parsley leaves and stir through the beef, then transfer to a bowl and set aside to cool completely. Step 3: Assemble and cook Roll the dough out on a lightly floured board to a large rectangle shape, about 2-3mm thickness. Cut rounds from the dough using an 11cm round cookie cutter (discard the offcuts). Place a tablespoonful of filling in the centre. Wet the edges of the pastry with a little water, then fold over in half and crimp the edges with a fork to seal. Heat enough oil in a large frying to shallow fry over high heat. Add the first batch of pastries and turn the heat down to medium. Cook for 1-2 minutes on the first side, until golden and crisp. Turn over and cook on the other side for a further minute to brown. Transfer to a wire rack over a tray to drain and repeat with the remaining pastries. Serve warm, with lemon wedges.

Vandaag wordt de Februaristaking van 25 februari 1941 herdacht. Het was de eerste grootschalige verzetsactie tegen de Duitse bezetter in Nederland. De staking was het enige massale en openlijke protest tegen de Jodenvervolging in bezet Europa. Aanleiding van de staking waren de eerste razzia's in Amsterdam waarbij honderden Joodse mannen werden opgepakt. De grote herdenking is altijd op het Jonas Daniel Meijerplein, maar er zijn nog veel meer plekken waar wordt herdacht. Zoals bij het beeld van Willem Kraan in de Willem Kraanstraat in Nieuw-West.  Willem Kraan was een verzetsheld in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Schrijfster Natascha van Weezel vertelt: "Willem Kraan was een van de twee initiatiefnemers van de februaristakingen. Hij besloot als stratenmaker zijn werk neer te leggen als protestbeweging tegen de Duitsers." Van Weezel vervolgt: “Deze herdenking is specifiek belangrijk, omdat dit verhaal minder bekend is dan het verhaal van de dokwerker in het centrum.” Sinds 2021 wordt bij dit monument in Nieuw-West jaarlijks herdacht, als aanvulling op de bekende ceremonie bij De Dokwerker. Hélène de Bruine, een van de organisatoren van het initiatief, benadrukt het belang van deze herdenkingsplek: "Het is heel belangrijk dat we ook in Nieuw-West plekken hebben die ons iets leren over de geschiedenis, oorlog en vrede." De Bruine benadrukt dat Kraan een bijzondere en toch gewone man was: "Willem Kraan was een stratenmaker, hij was geen man van in pak en op kantoor. Samen met andere mensen van de reiniging zette hij zich in tegen onrecht en dat is heel erg bijzonder." Ze voegt toe dat zijn verhaal nog steeds belangrijk is om te delen: "We hebben nog steeds te maken met onrecht. We kunnen zoveel leren van het onrecht in deze wereld. Wanneer zeg jij iets over een situatie vol onrecht? Dat kunnen wij leren van Willem Kraan." Ook Van Weezel ziet een duidelijke les in zijn verhaal: "Als je iets kan doen om een ander te helpen, dan doe je dat. In de tentoonstelling Claim Your Space: Bewaard voor de Stad zijn negen door Amsterdammers vertelde verhalen opgenomen.  "We willen zo laten zien dat Amsterdam kleurrijk is en verschillende verhalen heeft," legt de maker van de tentoonstelling, Kadja Bijlmakers, uit. "Elke Amsterdammer heeft een belangrijk verhaal dat in het archief thuishoort en voor altijd onderdeel moet zijn van de geschiedenis van de stad." In de tentoonstelling is onder meer een fotoserie van Lana Prins te zien waarop menstruerende vrouwen uit de stad zijn afgebeeld. "En dat terwijl misschien wel meer dan de helft van de Amsterdamse populatie menstrueert," benadrukt Bijlmakers. "We vonden het heel belangrijk om dat vast te leggen." Het Stadsarchief deed twee jaar geleden de belofte om de collectie diverser en representatiever te maken," vertelt Migiza Victoriashoop, hoofd Collecties van het Stadsarchief. "Als je buiten deze muren komt, zie je een diverse stad met verschillende groepen." De afgelopen twee jaar heeft het Stadsarchief geprobeerd de uiteenlopende verhalen van Amsterdammers zoveel mogelijk op te nemen in de collectie. Bijlmakers: "We kunnen wel verhalen blijven verzamelen van vroeger, maar als je zorgt dat het Amsterdam van nu op een representatieve manier wordt vastgelegd, weten mensen over zo'n 1000 jaar hoe Amsterdam er op dit moment uitzag."   "Of dat daadwerkelijk gelukt is, is natuurlijk aan de Amsterdammer om te bepalen," zegt Victoriashoop. President Trump touted his economic record during the State of the Union address, but economist Joseph Stiglitz says tariffs have been a failure.

De vertrouwde bordesscène kan niet verhullen wat er feitelijk aan de hand is, stellen Sander Heijne en Hendrik Noten in een nieuwe aflevering van Radio Vrij Nederland. Jetten is tijdens de formatie serieuze onderhandelingen uit de weg gegaan. Hij heeft een minderheidscoalitie gesmeed tussen drie partijen die ideologisch dicht bij elkaar staan, maar hij heeft verzuimd om voldoende parlementaire steun te organiseren om zijn plannen ook daadwerkelijk uit te voeren. Opmerkelijk, want zonder de steun van een meerderheid in beide Kamers zal zijn kabinet weinig klaarspelen. En dat de Kamer niet staat te popelen om Jetten aan meerderheden te helpen, werd woensdag direct duidelijk tijdens het debat over de regeringsverklaring. Daar keerde de meerderheidsoppositie zich reeds tegen de pensioenplannen van het kabinet. Het heeft er alle schijn van dat Jetten elders op zoek moet naar een dekking voor de extra Defensie-uitgaven. Ook op andere dossiers moet de formatie in feite nog beginnen. Zo berekende het Centraal Planbureau dat de stikstofplannen van het kabinet niet toereikend zijn om de wettelijk vastgelegde doelen te halen. En zelfs als dit wel het geval zou zijn, zal een uitgestoken hand naar de boeren alleen niet voldoende zijn om de uitstoot te verminderen. De nieuwe minister van Landbouw zal de sector er linksom of rechtsom toe moeten bewegen om substantieel minder dieren te houden. Iedereen die het stikstofdebat de afgelopen jaren heeft gevolgd weet: dit gaan de boeren niet leuk vinden. Een verdere bestudering van de meerjarenbegroting roept twijfels op over hoe serieus we de uitgestoken hand van Jetten richting Europa kunnen nemen. Onder leiding van zijn vorige chef, Dick Schoof, boekte minister van Financiën Eelco Heinen (VVD) alvast een bezuiniging van 1,5 miljard euro in op de afdracht aan Europa. Deze verlaging van de afdracht is (je raadt het niet) nooit gerealiseerd. De kans dat dit alsnog gebeurt, is nihil. Jetten zal elders in de begroting nog eens 1,5 miljard euro moeten vinden om de gaten de puinhoop van zijn voorganger op te ruimen. Het lijkt een kwestie van tijd tot de oppositie zich dit ook realiseert. Het is een knappe prestatie van Jetten om vier maanden na de verkiezingen een kabinet op het bordes te presenteren. Voor wie de socials van de minister-president volgt, is de komst van Jetten bovendien een verademing. In een gelikte videoproductie legde hij direct zijn eerste telefoongesprek met de Oekraïense president Volodimer Zelenski vast. De campaigner Jetten beheerst de nieuwe media als geen ander. Maar een succesvolle influencer maakt nog geen geslaagd premier. De komende maanden en jaren zal moeten blijken in hoeverre Jetten het politieke ambacht ook beheerst. En natuurlijk ontkomen Sander en Hendrik er niet aan om het nog één keer over de BBB te hebben. Na het vertrek van Caroline van der Plas leek het stemmenkanon Mona Keijzer niet meer dan logisch dan dat zij het leiderschap over zou nemen. Maar daar dacht de fractie anders over. Rahman was removed from the chamber Tuesday and spent several hours in jail following what she describes as an aggressive arrest by Capitol Police — all for silently challenging Trump during the speech. "There are only two things you can do at the State of the Union, and they are sit down and stand up," says Rahman. "I was arrested for standing up." Rahman, a U.S. citizen, was violently dragged out of her car and detained by federal immigration officers last month and later released without charge. De GGD wil een einde aan het gebruik van UF-schuim, isolatiemateriaal dat de afgelopen jaren in de spouwmuren van tienduizenden woningen in Nederland is aangebracht. Uit onderzoek van Zembla blijkt dat bewoners ziek kunnen worden van het gas dat uit het schuim vrijkomt. UF-schuim bevat formaldehyde, een stof die op de lijst van Zeer zorgwekkende stoffen (ZZS) staat omdat het kankerverwekkend is en DNA kan beschadigen. Uit een inventarisatie van Zembla blijkt dat bewoners op zeker zeven locaties gezondheidsklachten hebben gekregen. Het gaat om huurwoningen in Elst (Utrecht), Dalfsen, Dedemsvaart, Capelle aan den IJssel en Purmerend en om particuliere woningen in Oostzaan en Nieuwegein. Op meerdere locaties werden formaldehydeconcentraties gemeten die zo hoog waren dat bewoners van de GGD het advies kregen hun huis per direct te verlaten. Sommige woningen zijn al jaren onbewoonbaar. Op korte termijn kan blootstelling leiden tot benauwdheid, hoofdpijn en eczeem. Op lange termijn is formaldehyde kankerverwekkend. Milieu-epidemioloog Jeroen de Hartog van GGD regio Utrecht pleit voor een verbod op UF-schuim, tenzij uit onderzoek blijkt dat het veilig kan worden toegepast. Ook hoogleraar risicoanalyse van chemische stoffen Ad Ragas (Radboud Universiteit) spreekt zich in Zembla uit voor een direct verbod. Hij wijst erop dat formaldehyde onder meer keel- en neuskanker en leukemie kan veroorzaken en genotoxisch is, waardoor er volgens hem geen absoluut veilige dosis bestaat. In Dalfsen staan twee appartementencomplexen al drie jaar leeg omdat het formaldehydegehalte in een aantal woningen te hoog blijft. Op andere locaties konden bewoners maandenlang slechts in enkele kamers verblijven vanwege verhoogde concentraties in de rest van de woning. De gemeten waarden worden door deskundigen als uitzonderlijk hoog omschreven. Zembla onderzocht ook waarom UF-schuim nog altijd wordt gebruikt, terwijl al 45 jaar bekend is dat formaldehyde kankerverwekkend en genotoxisch is. Interne documenten van het ministerie van Volksgezondheid tonen dat topambtenaren in 1980 een verbod overwogen. Het ministerie van Volkshuisvesting wees destijds op de hoge kosten van vervanging. Anders dan in Canada werd UF-schuim in Nederland niet verboden. Een adviescommissie over maximale formaldehydeconcentraties in woningen besloot de bestaande norm niet te verlagen, nadat vertegenwoordigers uit de chemische industrie de kankerrisico’s relativeerden. Formaldehyde wordt naast isolatiemateriaal ook toegepast in onder meer spaanplaat en schoonmaakmiddelen. UF-schuim wordt al ruim vijftig jaar gebruikt en leidde eerder tot gezondheidsklachten. De laatste jaren nam het gebruik toe doordat de overheid het na-isoleren van woningen stimuleert. Het materiaal kan eenvoudig via de buitenmuur in bestaande spouwmuren worden gespoten. Het ministerie van Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke Ordening laat weten op de hoogte te zijn en wacht een lopend onderzoek van de GGD af om te beoordelen of de huidige regelgeving voldoende bescherming biedt.
