She reminds listeners and viewers to check in with the dermatologist: "A spot, a bump on their skin, a mole or a blemish anywhere, or just a rough spot, something scaly, might be cancerous."

Het culturele clubhuis Sexyland keert terug in Noord met een vaste plek op de NDSM-werf. De komende tien jaar is het NDSM Theater de thuisbasis voor de culturele vrijhaven. De nieuwe plek zorgt ook voor een naamsverandering, namelijk Super Sexyland World. Joost van Bellen kan zijn geluk niet op vanmiddag, bij het tekenen van het contract voor de nieuwe locatie. Het lid van het artistieke team van Sexyland is maar wat blij dat ze na meer dan anderhalf jaar niet meer dakloos zijn. "Het is gewoon fucking gelukt, het hele team heeft er zo hard aan gewerkt." De deuren van de nieuwe locatie gaan nog niet direct open. Het pand moet nog deels verbouwd worden om alle creatieve initiatieven een plek te geven. In het voorjaar van 2027 staat de opening van Super Sexyland World gepland. Zoektocht Aan die nieuwe locatie ging een lange zoektocht vooraf. In december 2024 nam Sexyland na zo'n 3,5 jaar afscheid van het pand aan de Noordwal bij het IJ. Die locatie moest namelijk eind dat jaar de deuren sluiten. De club riep Amsterdammers destijds op om mee te zoeken naar een nieuwe plek waar ruimte is om te 'experimenteren'. Het cultuurhuis gaf toen nog aan op zoek te willen naar een locatie die ze konden kopen. Hoewel dat niet gelukt is kan medeoprichter Aukje Dekker de nieuwe oplossing nog altijd niet geloven: "Tien jaar in een tijd zoals deze voelt gewoon als kopen." Sinds 2024 trok Sexyland van plek naar plek, met evenementen op festivals, in buurthuizen, loodsen en bij andere horecazaken. Het cultuurhuis begon in 2017 in een keet op de NDSM-werf. Negen jaar later keert Sexyland dus weer terug naar haar geboortegrond. 'Voor iedereen' De nieuwe locatie moet volgens Dekker wederom een plek worden waar iedere dag anders is en iedereen een stem heeft. "Het is een fantastische plek, helemaal vol met kunstenaars hier. Je komt hier niet om de elementen heen." De komende tijd wordt de nieuwe locatie van Sexyland helemaal klaargestoomd. 'Where the Old South Still Lives". Shot in black-and-white and partially in color, it shows various family events before focusing on the Pilgrimage, a yearly event in Natchez, Mississippi, that continues to this day. It began in 1932, when the Natchez Garden Club invited fellow garden clubs from all around the South for a series of garden tours, teas, and luncheons on the grounds of the city's historic houses. Many of the homes' interiors had fallen into disrepair, and tours were supposed to be limited to the exteriors -- until a rainstorm during the Pilgrimage famously changed the thinking of organizers. The event was so popular it became an annual one, and helped ensure the preservation and restoration of many mansions. Today the Natchez Pilgrimage is considered foundational to the city's tourist industry. In the early era the event celebrated and romanticized the "Old South" and antebellum era, with residents dressed in appropriate period costumes. Until the modern era, the portrayal romanticized the plantation era while glossing over the harsh realities of slavery that were foundational to it. The film illustrates how Southern elites in the 1930s used heritage tourism to promote a nostalgic, and often misleading, narrative of the antebellum South. It showcases various historic properties and mansions, highlighting the activities hosted as part of the pilgrimage, which are deeply tied to this complex history. We get a report from Nepal, where at least 547 people are confirmed to have died and over 1,500 are still missing after a glacial collapse on Wednesday sent a wall of ice, mud and rock into a Himalayan river, triggering catastrophic flooding in the Nepal-Tibet border region that swept away entire communities. "The number of people being killed, the number of properties being damaged has been way beyond what we can adapt to," says Sunil Acharya, a climate and public policy specialist reporting from Kathmandu, Nepal. "The communities who didn't cause anything to cause climate crisis are bearing the brunt of this crisis."

Quechua is the most widely spoken Indigenous language in the Americas, with approximately 7 to 10 million speakers living primarily in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. But like so many Indigenous languages, Qechua is vulnerable due to cultural pressures and discrimination. The new documentary Runa Simi — “our language” in Quechua — follows Fernando Valencia, a Peruvian voice actor, Indigenous activist, radio host and single father, who has dubbed many online clips of animated movies into Quechua from his home in Cusco, Peru. In the film, Fernando pursues his most ambitious goal yet: to fully dub Disney’s animated classic The Lion King into Quechua, with the help of his 8-year-old son, Dylan. “I am sharing our culture to the worldwide culture,” says Fernando Valencia, who started dubbing films after noticing that Quechua-speaking Indigenous children were watching movies dubbed into Spanish that they couldn’t understand. “There’s like one hour a week of Quechua [in school], so it is very hard to actually learn it,” says Fernando’s son Dylan, who is now 14 years old. “Indigenous people in Peru are fighting for basic rights, like having water, electricity, healthcare, education in their own language,” says Augusto Zegarra, the director of Runa Simi. “But they also have the right to access entertainment in their own language.” Subscribe to our Daily Email Digest: https://democracynow.org/subscribe

Nepali authorities say they have rescued more than 3,700 people so far. Geologists say the flash floods were set off by a landslide and glacial avalanche so powerful it set off its own seismic signal. Climate scientists warn the region is warming much faster than the global average, leading to the rapid retreat of glaciers. "Scientists and civil society have been warning about the very fact that these kind of events might happen in the Himalayas," says Sunil Acharya, a climate and public policy specialist reporting from Kathmandu, Nepal. "This is the result of the delayed global action to deal with climate change." "The number of people being killed, the number of properties being damaged has been way beyond what we can adapt to," says Acharya. The floods have "[washed] away hundreds of villages, a huge number of bridges and road infrastructure and also hydropower stations." According to the family's lawyer, Nieto had begged officers to let his son go as they were arrested on their way to soccer practice in Austin last week. Nieto wanted Liam released to his mother, but ICE reportedly refused. The arrest happened just days before Liam was set to start kindergarten. Texas Democratic Congressmember Joaquin Castro previously attempted to visit Liam and his father at Dilley but was denied by ICE. Last month, Castro led a group of more than 110 Democratic House members in a nationwide call to end family detention and shut down Dilley. "You have kids as young as 2 months old who have been in prison there," says Castro. "And every child that's put in there — every woman, every person — there are American investors who are making money off of their imprisonment." Castro notes that children are not supposed to be held in detention centers for more than 20 days. "I've met with kids who have been there three months, seven months, 10 months. Het markante oud-gemeenteraadslid zakte eerder voor de reactievermogentest en moest vorig jaar ook zijn opleiding vroegtijdig verlaten. Met het certificaat in de hand staat Frankfurther trots in de remise op de Havenstraat. Samen met zeven anderen is hij vandaag geslaagd als bestuurder. "Ik heb bewezen dat ik het kon." Zijn instructeur Stefan begeleidde hem negen weken lang. Nu is het volgens de GVB’er tijd voor zijn 'eigen' tram. Aankomende zaterdag draait Frankfurther zijn eerste dienst: om 6.30 uur vertrekt hij vanaf de Lekstraat. Een man met grijs haar en een zonnebril zit voor een bedieningspaneel en kijkt naar beneden. De foto is genomen door een raam of via een weerspiegeling, en in de hoek is een deel van de letter A te zien met een rood AT5-pictogram. Toegegeven, het was best een klus om het examen te halen. Drie jaar geleden zakte Frankfurther voor de beruchte Viennatest, die het reactievermogen van sollicitanten beoordeelt. Dat lag niet echt aan Frankfurther, zegt Frankfurther. Zelf zegt hij dat hij met gemak een vlieg uit de lucht kon pakken, maar dat de test simpelweg te moeilijk was. In Noorwegen is koning Harald op 89-jarige leeftijd overleden. Hij was de neef van koning Albert II en de achterneef van onze huidige koning Filip. Nadat hij zelf tegen de zin van zijn vader koning Olav met een burgermeisje was getrouwd, spoorde hij ook anderen aan om hun hart te volgen. Maar zijn pad liep niet over rozen.
